Evo Terra:

Podcasters are impressed when other podcasters make

Evo Terra:

difficult tasks seem effortless.

Evo Terra:

But generally speaking, the public cares more about quality than complexity.

Evo Terra:

Sometimes the easier path is best.

Evo Terra:

Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.

Evo Terra:

I talk a lot about making podcasting better, not just easier.

Evo Terra:

Heck, that's my mission statement, if, in fact, I have one.

Evo Terra:

I think it's on all of my bios.

Evo Terra:

But I'm a little concerned that the message I'm putting out

Evo Terra:

there is "Don't do easy things."

Evo Terra:

And that is not the message I'm putting out there.

Evo Terra:

Because a lot of what we do as podcasters, that means behind the

Evo Terra:

microphone like this, or also in the engineering thing, it should be easy.

Evo Terra:

Let's unpack this with one of my favorite tools of all times

Evo Terra:

that's called a two-by-two grid.

Evo Terra:

I'll describe it for you, but if you want to grab a pen and paper and make

Evo Terra:

one of these, knock yourself out.

Evo Terra:

So on the X-axis, that's the one that goes right to left, on the X-axis

Evo Terra:

we're going to plot out things that are easy to hard with difficulty

Evo Terra:

increasing over to the right.

Evo Terra:

Makes sense.

Evo Terra:

On the Y-axis, that's the up and down axis, we're going to go from bad to good,

Evo Terra:

with quality increasing across the time.

Evo Terra:

So now I have difficulty right to left, quality up and down.

Evo Terra:

Got it?

Evo Terra:

Now, when you do that, you will notice that your paper is now drawn

Evo Terra:

into four, nice and neat quadrants.

Evo Terra:

Hence, the two-by-two grid.

Evo Terra:

Let's label these quadrants, if you will.

Evo Terra:

Northwest, that's the upper left.

Evo Terra:

Get my hands going right.

Evo Terra:

In the upper left, we're going to call that one Staples, and

Evo Terra:

I'll explain why in a minute.

Evo Terra:

We'll come back to that in a minute.

Evo Terra:

Staples.

Evo Terra:

These are the things, in that upper left quadrant, that are good

Evo Terra:

quality, but also pretty darn easy.

Evo Terra:

They don't track over to the difficulty stage but they're

Evo Terra:

also of good or great quality.

Evo Terra:

Northeast, right to the right of that, in the upper right-hand

Evo Terra:

corner, we'll call this section Solo.

Evo Terra:

I'll explain why in a minute.

Evo Terra:

Again, quality is really good, but everything in here is a little difficult.

Evo Terra:

It's not easy.

Evo Terra:

It warranted being moved over to the difficult path.

Evo Terra:

You have to struggle to get these things done.

Evo Terra:

Staying clockwise, going down, southeast corner, lower right

Evo Terra:

corner that's Aspirational.

Evo Terra:

These are difficult things that when you do them right now,

Evo Terra:

really aren't all that great.

Evo Terra:

You have room for improvement.

Evo Terra:

Hence why we're calling these the Aspirational areas.

Evo Terra:

Hard to do and they're not in the good sides of things yet.

Evo Terra:

Sliding around to the last quadrant, lower left, southwest corner, Inexcusable.

Evo Terra:

These are easy things, but they sound terrible or they look

Evo Terra:

terrible or they're just not good.

Evo Terra:

Stop doing these.

Evo Terra:

Hence the name Inexcusable.

Evo Terra:

Okay.

Evo Terra:

So now, looking at this grid, either in our head or on the

Evo Terra:

paper, what should we be working on other than no more Inexcusable?

Evo Terra:

Right.

Evo Terra:

We definitely want to do no more in that southwest quadrant.

Evo Terra:

No more Inexcusable things.

Evo Terra:

But where should you, as a podcaster, focus your efforts?

Evo Terra:

Obviously, Aspirationals are what you're going to think of right away.

Evo Terra:

These are things that are hard to do and I'm not doing them

Evo Terra:

great so I want to get better.

Evo Terra:

You bet.

Evo Terra:

But take small bites of these.

Evo Terra:

Don't try and do everything in here.

Evo Terra:

Whatever things you're doing, if they wind up in that quadrant and they're

Evo Terra:

not good, well, yeah, you want to slightly try to make them better, but

Evo Terra:

don't try and do everything all at once.

Evo Terra:

Now, above that's Solo.

Evo Terra:

These are things right now that are difficult that sound really great,

Evo Terra:

or that look really great, but are very difficult for you to do.

Evo Terra:

Should you do more of these things?

Evo Terra:

Probably not, in my opinion.

Evo Terra:

And this is why I call them, this quadrant, the Solo quadrant because

Evo Terra:

one, it's tiring for you to keep doing things that are hard to do,

Evo Terra:

very difficult and of good quality.

Evo Terra:

But also think about it from a solo from a musical performance.

Evo Terra:

Some people absolutely want to hear a seventeen-minute guitar solo.

Evo Terra:

You bet they exist.

Evo Terra:

But the vast majority of people don't have the patience or desire to sit through

Evo Terra:

a technically proficient, extremely complex piece that goes on and on and on.

Evo Terra:

And as their fan, they have their fans, they are there, but most people

Evo Terra:

like, yeah, that's hard for me to listen to for a long period of time.

Evo Terra:

So too, I say, for podcasting.

Evo Terra:

So instead that leaves the Staples quadrant.

Evo Terra:

Why do I call them Staples?

Evo Terra:

Well, it's like staples in your pantry.

Evo Terra:

It's things you go to again and again and again.

Evo Terra:

These are things where the quality is already good.

Evo Terra:

It looks good.

Evo Terra:

It sounds good.

Evo Terra:

It is good.

Evo Terra:

It works really well, but they're low-effort items.

Evo Terra:

Here's the secret.

Evo Terra:

No one, other than maybe other pesky podcasters, but none of your regular

Evo Terra:

normal humans listening to your show know these are low-effort things.

Evo Terra:

And more importantly, they don't care.

Evo Terra:

They genuinely do not care.

Evo Terra:

They just know that the work that they're seeing, reading, consuming, interacting

Evo Terra:

with from you is of good quality.

Evo Terra:

Who cares that it's easy for you?

Evo Terra:

They certainly don't.

Evo Terra:

Now, this is a really fun exercise to do on your own, but I think it's better

Evo Terra:

when you do it with another podcaster.

Evo Terra:

So share this episode with someone and then meet them somewhere

Evo Terra:

virtually or in person socially.

Evo Terra:

This is whatever you want to do.

Evo Terra:

Draw your own two-by-two grids and then go through with the

Evo Terra:

other person all the various tasks that you do during your podcasts.

Evo Terra:

I don't - again, not just behind mic and on a mixer, but also marketing

Evo Terra:

and writing and ideation and all the other things that come out there.

Evo Terra:

Work with them and find out where, how you can help that person put

Evo Terra:

little things in your boxes and then they do the same for you.

Evo Terra:

Sharing the idea, share the love.

Evo Terra:

It's a fun little group experience, and you'll find out where you have

Evo Terra:

room for improvement and what more easy things you should be doing.

Evo Terra:

Cause that's okay too.

Evo Terra:

Don't be afraid of doing easy things when the quality is high.

Evo Terra:

Now, if you love this idea, please go to buymeacoffee.com/evoterra and buy me

Evo Terra:

a virtual coffee to show me your love.

Evo Terra:

That's it.

Evo Terra:

I shall be back tomorrow with yet another Podcast Pontifications.
