What Will They Carry After You’re Gone?
What will continue moving through the lives of others because you were here?
Legacy is more than what people remember about us or say about us after we are gone. It is what we intentionally place within others—truth, courage, wisdom, faith, and love that can continue growing long after our particular season has ended.
In this episode of our Legacy Arc, we follow a remarkable chain of impartation. Lois and Eunice planted sincere faith within Timothy. Barnabas believed in Paul when others were afraid of him. Paul then recognized Timothy’s potential, invited him into the work, walked beside him, strengthened him, and eventually entrusted the gospel to him.
Paul did not merely teach Timothy. Timothy observed Paul’s conduct, faith, patience, love, perseverance, and response to suffering. He carried not only Paul’s message, but also the imprint of Paul’s character.
We also consider the relationship between John Newton and William Wilberforce. Rather than encouraging Wilberforce to leave public life, Newton helped him recognize Parliament as the place of his God-given assignment. Wilberforce would spend decades working to abolish the British slave trade.
True mentors do not manufacture copies of themselves. They help people become faithful to what God has placed within them.
Drawing from Dr. Henry Cloud’s picture of the “wake” our character leaves behind, Matt reminds us that everyone deposits something into the people around them. That wake may contain courage, stability, truth, and love—or anxiety, criticism, control, and fear.
Legacy is not something we suddenly create at the end of life. We are forming it today through our conversations, relationships, decisions, corrections, encouragement, and example.
