In April 2021, Palm Springs resident David Spann had a 2 am visit he wasn't expecting. As someone tried kicking and then knocking down his front door with a sledge hammer he called police to tell them there was a home invasion. That's when he was confronted by a man dressed in paramilitary clothing representing himself as a bounty hunter working for a Bail Bondsman who had ordered his capture and detention. Within minutes, police arrived and Mr. Spann was dead. Spann, who did hot have any warrant out for his arrest and had not had his bail revoked by a court, was killed by Fabian Herrera, who was not a licensed bail agent, and who was not permitted to possess a firearm because of past felony convictions. The Desert Sun got a court order to release the body camera footage of what happened in the early morning hours of April 23, and it has raised plenty of questions and left Herrera and his mother facing murder charges, and an unconvicted man dead.
