Join Judy in celebrating Forefathers, Flags, and our Indepenance and walk away humming God Bless America!
Welcome, friends, to the Creative
Spiritual Journey podcast, where Ghia
2
:and I walk with you for just a moment
on this journey of life and share
3
:with you the things of our hearts, the
joys and the blessings and the lessons
4
:that we have learned along the way..
5
:Thanks for joining me.
6
:Today's episode, I've had a hard time
deciding is it Forefathers and Flags
7
:or God Bless America, Land That I Love?
8
:Because tomorrow is Flag Day, and then
next Sunday is Father's Day, and we have
9
:the upcoming 4th of July celebration this
episode has been very special in the
10
:making, in that it has made me reflect
and ponder, and it has even brought me
11
:to tears Here is where I need to add a
disclosure, is I guess the word, that
12
:this is not a political message nor a
Sunday school lesson because I am neither.
13
:I am a podcaster making an
episode that brings me joy.
14
:this message is going to seem
cheesy and maybe like I'm
15
:oversimplifying the issues at hand.
16
:My hope is that this message stirs
a little patriotism, a love for our
17
:forefathers, for our country, this
land and recognize our responsibility
18
:to uphold this independence, this
freedom that we are so blessed with.
19
:So it is the year 2026, so
we are celebrating the United
20
:States 250th anniversary of the
Declaration of Independence.
21
:It is called a
22
:semiquincentennial.
23
:Semiquincentennial?
24
:Have you heard that word before?
25
:Can you believe America is that young?
26
:When you look at the big picture
of the creation of this world,
27
:250 years, we're still babies
28
:we're not a perfect nation by any means.
29
:In fact, we have a lot of growing
pains, I call them, flaws and mistakes
30
:that we've made along the way.
31
:But I believe we are a land of promise,
32
:a land ordained by God to
be free, a land of liberty.
33
:I don't know if you remember
the bicentennial celebration.
34
:I was in elementary school, and
like millions of other elementary
35
:school students we stood on a
stage and sang, "This land is
36
:your land, this land is my land."
37
:Or how about, "50 nifty United States"?
38
:I love those songs, but the one
that comes to mind is . god bless
39
:America, the land that I love.
40
:Stand beside her and guide her through
the night with the light from above.
41
:From the mountains to the prairies,
to the oceans white with foam, God
42
:bless America, my home sweet home.
43
:At the time, they were just songs to
memorize, but looking back, I realize they
44
:were teaching us something much deeper:
gratitude for our country, patriotism,
45
:appreciation for our freedoms, and the
responsibility that comes to us as being
46
:a citizen of the United States of America.
47
:I grew up in a home where my father
always flew a big American flag.
48
:on a flagpole out in our yard, During the
bicentennial year, he had a bicentennial
49
:flag with the circle of the 13 colonies.
50
:And he would wear a flag pin on his lapel.
51
:He was a Navy man who I think probably
was the only one who celebrated Flag Day.
52
:Growing up, the 4th of July was
my favorite holiday because of
53
:the fireworks, the picnics, the
parades, the family togetherness.
54
:I had a strong sense of belonging
to something bigger than myself when
55
:we would celebrate the 4th of July
56
:This year, in The Church of Jesus
Christ of Latter-day Saints, we have
57
:been invited to join something big.
58
:As the United States commemorates
its 250th anniversary of the
59
:Declaration of Independence.
60
:We've been invited to participate in
a united fast on Sunday, July 5th,
61
:2026, in gratitude for the blessing
of religious liberty and with prayer
62
:that this freedom will be protected
and strengthened throughout the world.
63
:This is a meaningful opportunity to
express gratitude for our freedom
64
:to worship and to unite in faith
on behalf of our communities, our
65
:nation, and our people everywhere
66
:I love that it is to strengthen freedom
to choose and religious freedom to worship
67
:as one will throughout the whole world.
68
:This is not just a celebration
of the United States.
69
:It is a celebration of human beings'
That we have these rights, they
70
:are God-given, for life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness.
71
:I'm sure you've heard
the term forefathers.
72
:What is a forefather?
73
:They are an ancestor, typically a male
relative from the past generations.
74
:But the term broadly refers to pioneers,
founders, like the founders of our
75
:independence, the founders of this nation
and the Constitution, or early members
76
:of a group such as a family, nation, or
tradition who established foundational
77
:beliefs, practices, or culture.
78
:I love our forefathers.
79
:I love my father.
80
:I love watching my husband
be a father and a grandpa.
81
:According to The Family: A
Proclamation to the World
82
:Fathers by divine design are to preside
over their families in love and in
83
:righteousness, and are to be responsible
to provide The necessities of life
84
:and protection for their families.
85
:That sounds a lot like our forefathers
when they stepped up to sign
86
:the Declaration of Independence.
87
:They were establishing a nation where
we could have freedoms and independence
88
:and the pursuit of happiness.
89
:I love our forefathers.
90
:of this nation, their courage,
their inspiration, and forward
91
:thinking to be unified.
92
:They were men of all different kinds
of backgrounds and came at it with all
93
:different kinds of opinions, I'm sure.
94
:But they took a moment to put aside ego
and pride and to consider the bigger
95
:picture, the needs of a nation, the birth
of a nation and its independence and its
96
:future of what it could grow up to be
97
:The story we've been told of Independence
Day is of 56 men, our forefathers
98
:stepped up to a wooden
table in Philadelphia.
99
:They dipped their quills in ink and signed
their names to a piece of parchment.
100
:By doing so, they officially claimed
101
:our independence from England,
102
:Now, the Declaration of Independence
is a big document with big words
103
:that I feel like sometimes you
need a degree in law to understand.
104
:But there are some words
that ring true to my heart
105
:Maybe these are words that you're familiar
with from the Declaration of Independence.
106
:And that is
107
:we hold these truths to be self-evident,
that all men are created equal,
108
:and that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable
109
:rights, that among these are life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
110
:Ah, that just brings a smile to my face.
111
:How about you?
112
:But we know that this liberty,
this independence, this
113
:freedom is not new to America.
114
:It is as old as time.
115
:In fact
116
:Before this world was created, our
Heavenly Father gave us, you and I,
117
:His sons and daughters, moral agency.
118
:He wanted us to choose Him freely,
to choose light and truth and
119
:goodness without compulsion.
120
:Moral agency and this freedom is so
important to Heavenly Father's plan.
121
:Agency.
122
:That is exactly what
Satan sought to destroy.
123
:In fact, he was even cast out of
God's presence, and Jesus Christ
124
:became the champion of God's plan.
125
:His atoning sacrifice is what
makes it possible for us to use
126
:our agency to choose God's plan.
127
:Without a Savior, we would be
held captive by sin, weakness, and
128
:conditions of this mortal journey,
but Jesus Christ makes us free.
129
:When we were raising our family, my
husband would often ask our children,
130
:"What is the price of liberty?"
131
:?" We think of the price of liberty of the
man who gave their lives, which is true,
132
:the forefathers and the work and sacrifice
in establishing this land, which is true.
133
:But in the Book of Mormon,
Father Lehi teaches his
134
:children the price of liberty?"
135
:He said, "Wherefore I, Lehi, prophesy
according to the workings of the Spirit
136
:which is in me, that there shall none come
to this land save they shall be brought by
137
:the hand of the Lord, because this land is
consecrated unto him who he shall bring.
138
:And if it so be that they shall serve
him according to the commandments which
139
:he has given, it shall be a land of
liberty unto them; wherefore they shall
140
:never be brought down into captivity.
141
:If so, it shall be because of iniquity;
for if iniquity shall abound cursed shall
142
:be the land for their sakes, but unto the
righteous it shall be blessed forever."
143
:So the simple answer is be good boys,
be good girls, choose the right, love
144
:the Lord, and you will have liberty.
145
:It's that simple "Inasmuch as
ye shall keep my commandments,
146
:ye shall prosper in the land."
147
:This pursuit of happiness is prospering
in the land, "But inasmuch as ye
148
:will not keep my commandments, ye
shall be cut off from my presence."
149
:That, to me, is a state of
hopelessness, I feel like our
150
:home sweet home isn't so sweet.
151
:There's division and contention.
152
:And it appears evil is seeking to
destroy liberty and oppress the people.
153
:This is found in 2 Nephi 2:27.
154
:men are free according to
155
:the flesh and they are free to choose
liberty and eternal life through the
156
:mediator of all man or to choose captivity
and death according to the captivity and
157
:power of the devil, for he seeketh to
make all man miserable like unto himself."
158
:The Book of Mormon contains over dozens
of teachings saying that this is a
159
:choice land, and whatsoever nation shall
possess it shall be free from bondage
160
:and captivity, and from all other nations
under heaven, if they will but serve the
161
:God of the land, who is Jesus Christ."
162
:This land is described as a
choice land above all other lands.
163
:This is not about national superiority,
but this is the price of liberty?"
164
:?" The prophet Joseph Smith loved this land
and recognized that our religious freedom
165
:was established for the restoration of
the gospel of Jesus Christ, He said, "I
166
:am bold to declare before heaven that I
am just as ready to die in defending the
167
:rights of a Presbyterian, a Baptist, or
a good man of any other denomination.
168
:For the same principle which would
trample under the rights of a Latter-day
169
:Saint would trample under the rights
of a Roman Catholic or any other
170
:denomination who would be unpopular
or too weak to defend themselves.
171
:It is the love of liberty which inspires
my soul, civil and religious liberty
172
:to the whole of the human race."
173
:I believe the Prophet Joseph
Smith could see a bigger picture.
174
:He could understand the importance of
freedom of religion, not just for his
175
:time and in the United States, but for all
human beings across the whole wide world.
176
:Just recently, Sister Camille
Johnson, who is the General Relief
177
:Society president, of the church,
ooh, can you imagine that job?
178
:She, understands the importance of our
role as women in defending religious
179
:freedom, and what we can do in our
personal lives this is what she had to say
180
:"I believe that the most important
impactful work of women continues
181
:to be done when we care for our own
children, teach a friend to read,
182
:patiently address the needs of an elderly
neighbor, prepare a meal for the sick,
183
:or cry with a sister who is grieving.
184
:The way we bear and nurture humanity
connects women across culture
185
:divides and language barriers,
laying a foundation for peace.
186
:I strive to be a disciple of Jesus Christ.
187
:I believe He came to earth to save
humanity from sin and death, and to
188
:lift us in our sorrow and distress.
189
:The work of defending the United States
Constitution, religious freedom, and the
190
:family is not just for legal scholars
and academics, it is for Relief Society
191
:presidents, and non-lawyers, and
people of every religious persuasion.
192
:Let us follow the Prince of Peace."
193
:I love that.
194
:"Let us follow the Prince of Peace
and practice in our own personal and
195
:professional lives His perfect example.
196
:He wants to engage with us and will as
we joyfully engage in His great work."
197
:Isn't that beautiful?
198
:That, my sisters, is what we can do It
begins in our hearts, in our homes, with
199
:what we do with our hands and our times.
200
:It begins in our prayers and our fasting.
201
:It begins in our service
and our ministering.
202
:Sometimes I think we minimize the
power that we have, that we can make in
203
:bringing peace and change in the world,
So my friends, I hope that today you
204
:find yourself humming God Bless America
because we have been so blessed And as
205
:America approaches her 250th birthday,
my heart is filled with gratitude.
206
:Gratitude for my father who loved
this country and taught me to
207
:love this country and honor her.
208
:Gratitude for religious freedom.
209
:so many fought to defend, I
have traveled the world over and
210
:I have seen beautiful places.
211
:I've even been in countries when
they have celebrated their freedoms.
212
:And there's just something about
America being ordained by God to
213
:establish this, his restored gospel,
his church, his kingdom here.
214
:There's just a little bit different
tenderness in my heart for that.
215
:And I hope it is for you too, because
there is so much to be grateful for.
216
:Gratitude for the promises
found in the Book of Mormon.
217
:Gratitude for the voices like Joseph
Smith and Camille Johnson, who
218
:remind us that liberty and peace are
preserved one person, one family,
219
:one act of discipleship at a time.
220
:It begins with you.
221
:When you sing God Bless
America, land that I love,
222
:maybe we're being more
than just patriotic.
223
:Perhaps we're offering a prayer, a
plea to God to bless us and for us to
224
:remember our commitment to do our part
to bless this land do you sometimes
225
:wonder, like I do, what 2076 will bring?
226
:What will it look like for our
children and our children's children?
227
:Will it still be a land
of liberty and freedom?
228
:That's up to us.
229
:That's up to them.
230
:It's up to us fulfilling this
covenant promise with the Lord to
231
:keep His commandments and to honor
and serve the God of this land
232
:So what will you do for
this Semiquincentennial.
233
:Celebration?
234
:Maybe you'll fly a big flag in
your yard or go to a parade and
235
:catch some taffy or have a picnic
in the park and have a hot dog.
236
:For me, there has to be fireworks and
standing together side by side, shoulder
237
:to shoulder, with my hand over my heart
saying out loud the Pledge of Allegiance
238
:to the flag of the United States of
America and to the Republic for which it
239
:stands one nation under God, indivisible
with liberty and justice for all.
240
:And I'm sure it will bring tears to
my eyes, tears of joy and gratitude.
241
:I sure missed celebrating the 4th
of July while I was in South Africa.
242
:We take her for granted too much.
243
:I hope that you join in the fast on
July 5th to tell our Heavenly Father,
244
:that we are grateful for our and life,
liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
245
:We are so blessed, and I love you.
246
:I hope that you be good girls, choose the
right, love the Lord, love this country
247
:and will hum at least a few bars of God
Bless America today as you walk around.
248
:Thanks for joining me.
249
:Hey, and happy Flag Day, and happy
Father's Day, and happy 4th of
250
:July, and happy everything day.
251
:join me next week for
a Semiquincentennial.
252
:meditation.
253
:I don't know.
254
:Come and find out, and
I'll see you on the trail
