Sometimes, a simple insight can make a world of difference. You may have heard the old adage, “pain is inevitable, but suffering is optional.” Well, it’s true. We so often create unnecessary suffering, stress and struggle for ourselves by piling on and becoming stuck in unhelpful thoughts and emotional reactivity. But the idea that we can merely choose to eradicate suffering in our lives can be as demoralising as it is liberating if we don’t also have the tools to apply it.
In this episode of Mentally Stronger, I introduce some of those tools by first outlining where pain and suffering fit within the primary and secondary dimensions of our present-moment experience. I then guide you through ‘the Tree,’ a grounding mindfulness practice to move you towards greater inner peace and improved mental clarity, creating the space to choose to let go of avoidable suffering, even in the face of unavoidable pain.
