Spoiler alert: you might want to hire a pro instead of trying to channel your inner Bob Vila. Let’s be real – nobody wants to spend their summer sweating over a sander when they could be at the beach, am I right? So grab your iced coffee, or maybe something a little stronger, and get ready for some real talk about home improvement that won’t leave you feeling like a total failure. But that’s not all! In the second hour, we’re getting serious about a topic that affects us all: the affordable housing crisis. Eric and John dig into the nitty-gritty of what’s really going on in our communities and how those pesky permit fees are adding to the chaos. I mean, who knew you’d be paying for tree planting permits just to renovate your kitchen? If you’re thinking of diving into a remodel, you might want to have a heart-to-heart with your wallet first. We’ll break down the absurdity of costs in cities like Portland – spoiler alert: it’s not pretty. So tune in to hear how we can all pitch in to make housing more affordable without losing our minds or our savings. As we wrap up this wild ride of home maintenance antics, we just want to say THANK YOU to our audience for keeping us afloat while we dodge rogue ladders and navigate the murky waters of home improvement mayhem. You guys are the real MVPs! So, if you’re looking for laughs, tips, and maybe a few questionable DIY decisions, you’ll definitely want to catch us this Saturday. Speaker A:We have a great around the house show coming up this weekend.
Speaker A:Help us out and subscribe on your favorite podcast player.
Speaker A:In the first hour of the show, Eric G. And John Dudley talk about how to get those projects started and of course finished.
Speaker A:All while saving you money refinishing hardwood floors.
Speaker B:Yeah, no, I wouldn't either.
Speaker C:I'm gonna pay a professional.
Speaker C:I'm not doing it again.
Speaker C:It is so hard to deal with that.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker C:And my patience runs out.
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:If you're not doing it every day, you don't have the right tools.
Speaker B:Even if you rent the right tools, don't know how to use them.
Speaker B:It's.
Speaker B:No, get a guy in there, they knock it out in a week.
Speaker B:Stay out of the house, go rent a motel, go to the beach, something.
Speaker C:Exactly.
Speaker B:Get it done.
Speaker B:Right.
Speaker C:But that leads me into the next problem.
Speaker C:Right?
Speaker C:People go out and refinish those hardwood floors and then they go, cool, I'm gonna do a kitchen.
Speaker B:After they've done the floor.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker C:It happened so many times.
Speaker C:How many times have you.
Speaker C:And I walked to a project and that kitchen has been beautifully updated.
Speaker C:The lipstick on the pig.
Speaker C:They put new hardware on.
Speaker C:They put on brand new countertops, stone, quartz, whatever.
Speaker C:And they buy the house and they're like, cool, I want to do the same.
Speaker A:In the second hour, Eric G. And John Dudley explore the real issues behind our affordable housing problems and what we all have to do to fix it.
Speaker C:What these permit fees cost and stuff.
Speaker C:In the city of Portland, for instance, where I'm located, you have to pay a fee to the water department, to the urban forestry, because they're going to tell you how many trees you have to plant.
Speaker C:You could have a $20,000 check you have to write to the transit department.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker C:How does that get involved there?
Speaker B:Yeah.
Speaker B:I just can't believe you tell me these things.
Speaker B:And it's been a spell since I've been up there doing remodels, but I can't.
Speaker B: d to pull was that house from: Speaker B: Built in: Speaker B:I pulled down the whole back half of that house with my Suburban.
Speaker C:Yeah.
Speaker B:There was no plucking it apart board by board.
Speaker B:It was just knocked that thing down, take it down.
Speaker B:Hand drawn permits that I delivered myself.
Speaker B:I didn't need an architect.
Speaker B:I didn't need permission from the forest service, for crying out loud.
Speaker B:And I think I might have paid, I don't know, $1,600 for permits or something.
Speaker A:All that and more on Saturday's around the house show with Eric G. If you work in the trades or construction or design business, check out the around the House Pro Insider podcast that is back.
