Speaker:the top resources you need to thrive and make your marketing mesmerizing.
Speaker:And now here's your host Dimple.
Speaker:Dang.
Speaker:Welcome back my Mesmerizing Marketing Tribe.
Speaker:Today we're gonna be talking about unveiling the YouTube algorithm,
Speaker:how to crack the code and master.
Speaker:This is gonna be a really great episode because if you are either
Speaker:a current YouTuber or you're looking to start a YouTube channel,
Speaker:it's going to help you to understand what YouTube really wants and how
Speaker:their algorithm works, because if you have a good understanding
Speaker:of that, that's gonna enable you.
Speaker:to get more visibility for your channel, for your content, and also have a better
Speaker:understanding of what it takes to even get your content on YouTube to rank, because
Speaker:that's the whole name of the game is you wanna get more views back to your videos.
Speaker:So let's dive right into it.
Speaker:So what do you need to know about the YouTube algorithm?
Speaker:Well, Powered by AI and , its recommendation system is.
Speaker:to put the best content and the most engaging content in front of its viewers.
Speaker:Okay?
Speaker:And the algorithm is always gonna be changing, but there are certain factors
Speaker:that go into the YouTube algorithm, and it's really important to understand that
Speaker:before you start grading content so that videos have the ability to be shown to
Speaker:more people and rank higher up in terms of being a search that comes up when someone
Speaker:is searching for something on YouTube.
Speaker:So one thing to know about the algorithm, and this is not just pertaining to
Speaker:YouTube, but this could be an algorithm pertaining to Google or anything.
Speaker:What's interesting is that it actually is designed to make sure that it's
Speaker:going to be aligned with that brand's policies and mission statement and the.
Speaker:right?
Speaker:So for YouTube, some of the things that are important to them is that,
Speaker:one, they wanna reduce like false news.
Speaker:They're not into like fake news and false news.
Speaker:So they are not gonna favor content that has what they believe to be false news.
Speaker:. The other thing that's important to them is that they do want
Speaker:to reward trusted creators.
Speaker:They know that content creators spend a lot of time into creating
Speaker:content, into editing, into creating thumbnails, all of that.
Speaker:So they're really focused on rewarding, trusted creators, and you
Speaker:can see how that's happening, right?
Speaker:Through the current YouTube shorts, monetization program, and
Speaker:of course YouTube's, own general monetization program as well.
Speaker:That's been going on for a while in terms of making money from their content.
Speaker:So the other thing is they want to.
Speaker:remove content that is in violation of their policies, and if you're not
Speaker:sure what their policies are, you can go and read about it, you can download
Speaker:it, and if you are violating any of their perceived policies, then it's
Speaker:going to just take your content down.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:The other thing is it's also going to increase our raise up.
Speaker:sources that it deems to be authoritative for news and other important information.
Speaker:So if it thinks that, okay, that source is an authoritative source
Speaker:and that information is valuable, it's going to reward those people.
Speaker:And again, in the algorithm, it's going to show those videos to more people.
Speaker:But let's really get down to it.
Speaker:And let's talk about right now, currently in 2023.
Speaker:, you know, how does the YouTube algorithm work?
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:And what happens is, like many other algorithms, when you think about even
Speaker:Google and you know, Google search, all of that, and even you think about algorithms
Speaker:about like TikTok, all those things.
Speaker:YouTube is going to use machine learning to understand their user's behavior, and
Speaker:they're gonna prioritize videos that their users are most likely to be interested
Speaker:in watching and interacting with.
Speaker:So according to YouTube, what they're saying is that recommendation system
Speaker:actually finds videos for viewers rather than viewers for video.
Speaker:let me repeat this one more time cuz it's really important.
Speaker:So, in their crater videos, what YouTube is saying, this is coming from
Speaker:YouTube, is that their recommendation system finds videos for viewers rather
Speaker:than finding viewers for videos.
Speaker:So what that means is videos are actually pulled.
Speaker:For each user based on what they have an interest in and what they've shown
Speaker:interest in in the past, and the goal of their discovery system is to show
Speaker:viewers with a video that they're more likely to watch and actually enjoy.
Speaker:And because of this, each different viewer, , their recommendations
Speaker:will look different that are gonna be customized based on their
Speaker:behavior and what type of content they have watched and engaged with.
Speaker:And when it comes to that, What's important to know is that this part
Speaker:of the algorithm, it takes several factors into account when it goes into
Speaker:recommending content, and one of those things is, called viewer personalization.
Speaker:Then the other aspect is called viewer performance.
Speaker:And viewer personalization refers to signals in terms of what videos
Speaker:the YouTube users like to watch, which ones they actually ignored.
Speaker:And then it has some other factors that go into that as well.
Speaker:And then video performance is based on viewer satisfaction.
Speaker:Okay, so let's talk about video performance, and that
Speaker:means how well the content.
Speaker:Engaged viewers when it was initially offered to them.
Speaker:So meaning did the viewer choose to watch the video or did they ignore it?
Speaker:Or did they even click on the not interested button?
Speaker:So if they do choose to watch it, how long did they watch it for?
Speaker:And how much of the video did they watch in its entirety or not?
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:. So in this case, the YouTube system, the algorithm, it views the video's average
Speaker:view, duration and average percentage viewed as signals to inform ranking.
Speaker:And it's also looking for this thing, which is, did the viewer enjoy the video?
Speaker:So by using these type of signals, it allows YouTube to narrow down
Speaker:the best set of videos to actually offer that particular viewer.
Speaker:And the other important thing to note is that YouTube doesn't really
Speaker:have a specific opinion about the type of video that you make.
Speaker:Or any particular type of format, but really what they're
Speaker:trying to do is they're trying to see what the audience likes.
Speaker:So don't worry about being, an expert in, in like all of this analytical data
Speaker:and all that, but it is good to know a little bit about it, but really focus
Speaker:more so on what your audience likes.
Speaker:And if you don't know what they like, you can even ask them in one of
Speaker:your YouTube videos and then, , you can change things like the, the
Speaker:video title or the thumbnail, and that can even make a difference in
Speaker:terms of being more appealing to your audience or them clicking on
Speaker:it, them viewing the video, right?
Speaker:And you can actually see how people are interacting with your video differently.
Speaker:So when your video looks different to.
Speaker:, it's viewers.
Speaker:It changes how they're gonna interact with it.
Speaker:And by changing your video title around or changing the thumbnail, it can
Speaker:really be a great way to get more views.
Speaker:So even if you have a video that you created and you're seeing that
Speaker:it's not really taking off, go in, edit it and make a new thumbnail.
Speaker:Maybe the thumbnail that you are using just didn't grab anyone's attention.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:However important to.
Speaker:If your video is performing well, don't change anything cuz it's already working,
Speaker:like you don't wanna change anything.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Now according to YouTube, let's talk about how YouTube measures viewer satisfaction
Speaker:and again, viewer satisfaction.
Speaker:There's a lot of different factors that go into it, but some of the metrics
Speaker:that it's looking for is a longer watch.
Speaker:, did this video get a longer watch time?
Speaker:And then the other thing it's looking for is video shares.
Speaker:Did this video get shared?
Speaker:And then it's also looking for engagement.
Speaker:So it wants to see if there were metrics that indicate that people liked the video.
Speaker:Did they comment, did they subscribe to the channel?
Speaker:And then, viewer satisfaction is also measured by the watch history.
Speaker:So those are all important.
Speaker:So as you know, YouTube videos are often found on the Google search result pages,
Speaker:and that is why it's also important to know, like when you're creating
Speaker:content, , how are you gonna get it to actually rank in the search engines?
Speaker:Because that's important because it can actually increase your video
Speaker:views, it can increase your video watch time, all of those things, right?
Speaker:But in order to get your video featured on the Google search page or
Speaker:featured on search, you know, let's say page one, when someone's doing
Speaker:a search, you know, it has to have a, a couple of different components.
Speaker:And one component that's really important is.
Speaker:, is it relevant to the search term that someone is searching for?
Speaker:Meaning is that relevant shown through the title tag of the video?
Speaker:The description in the video, and also, you know, search queries.
Speaker:And when you think about that, you know, you wanna make sure.
Speaker:That your video, the way that you design it, the way that you title it,
Speaker:everything that you do is relevant to the content, , that you wanna be shown
Speaker:for, and that it's also consistent.
Speaker:And the other thing that's important is engagement.
Speaker:So engagement is gonna help YouTube determine whether or not that video
Speaker:is actually useful to answer a specific search, query or question.
Speaker:Our intent.
Speaker:So if someone is engaging with the video, that means that yes, the
Speaker:answer is it was something that had valuable information to address.
Speaker:Specific questions are intent of the user or the watcher.
Speaker:Or the viewer.
Speaker:Now the other thing, the third thing is, quality, right?
Speaker:So it really wants to see content that is quality, that helps build trustworthiness.
Speaker:It shows expertise and.
Speaker:, it actually prefers quality content over tons of content.
Speaker:So instead of trying to post a video every single day, but the video's not
Speaker:quality, you would be better off posting one quality video a week because it's
Speaker:going to favor that video more, and that video's going to get more views
Speaker:and it's going to take off better.
Speaker:So don't think about creating videos in terms of.
Speaker:Tons of them, but actually think about the strategy behind creating the video.
Speaker:Like what is it about what intent?
Speaker:What's the intent of the video?
Speaker:Who do you wanna reach?
Speaker:Who's your target audience?
Speaker:How are you speaking to your target audience in that video?
Speaker:And all of those things are really important.
Speaker:So make sure that you're also considering that.
Speaker:And then also make sure that you are.
Speaker:maximizing the algorithm of the recommended videos.
Speaker:So, you know, the recommended video algorithm of course, is always changing as
Speaker:well, but some of the things that it takes into account is, you know, watch history,
Speaker:search history, channel subscriptions, and then also, you know, what country
Speaker:you're in and the time of the day for like news or trending content, right?
Speaker:It's also gonna look at, obviously the video quality.
Speaker:So if you can look at some of the best performing videos and you see that they
Speaker:have done well, you can actually mirror what their title is to potentially
Speaker:show up as a recommended video.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:And this is really important cuz if you can get your video to be recommended
Speaker:after someone just watches a video that has tons of of views, then that's
Speaker:great because now you're basically writing the coattail of the person
Speaker:who's already ranking and you're able to rank based off of your video
Speaker:having similar content as their video.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:So that's really, really important.
Speaker:And I'm gonna do another episode, which we will link on actually how
Speaker:to get your YouTube video to rank on page one of Google, where I'm gonna
Speaker:go over that information in detail.
Speaker:But, you know, make sure you subscribe to my Mesmerizing Marketing podcast so
Speaker:that you won't miss out on that one.
Speaker:. So I wanna make sure that you're really understanding the suggested video concept
Speaker:because 70% of the views on YouTube actually come from suggested videos.
Speaker:And that's in your benefit.
Speaker:Because if YouTube likes your video, then it's gonna push that video for you.
Speaker:right?
Speaker:And then it also pertains to the importance of users that are watching
Speaker:multiple videos from one channel.
Speaker:So if YouTube sees that people are watching more than one video from
Speaker:a channel and they're watching multiple videos, it's gonna actually
Speaker:recommend other videos from that channel as well to other people.
Speaker:So the tactic is to really help your users stay engaged with the content
Speaker:and to use a thumbnail template, right?
Speaker:So if people like your video.
Speaker:and they see the thumbnail again later and they click it.
Speaker:Then YouTube has learned that users are watching multiple videos.
Speaker:So you can actually have thumbnails that have a consistent look
Speaker:and feel to go with your brand.
Speaker:So if your brand colors are, , red and, and white and black, then you wanna
Speaker:make sure that you're using the same brand colors and the same font in all of
Speaker:your thumbnails to have that consistent look and feel, because that's going to.
Speaker:Register with viewers as, oh, okay.
Speaker:I recognize this YouTube crater.
Speaker:I know who it is.
Speaker:And yes, I've watched their videos before.
Speaker:They're good.
Speaker:And because of that I want to watch more of their videos.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:So the other thing I wanna talk about is, trending YouTube videos.
Speaker:So, you know, the trending videos, like they're not necessarily
Speaker:personalized, but trending videos are.
Speaker:Likely to appeal to a large audience.
Speaker:So if you can go and you can search on Google Trends in terms of what topics
Speaker:are trending right now, and let's say that you create content about that, or
Speaker:let's say that you see what is trending in your niche or industry and you can
Speaker:create a YouTube video about that topic.
Speaker:Well, you know, that's going to give you a lot more reach too,
Speaker:because those topics are trending and YouTube is going to favor that.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:And just keep that in mind.
Speaker:So that's another strategy.
Speaker:. And then I do wanna also talk about YouTube shorts.
Speaker:So YouTube shorts is huge right now.
Speaker:I'm gonna do a separate episode on that, so make sure that you
Speaker:guys do subscribe to my podcast so you don't miss out on that one.
Speaker:But with YouTube shorts, I mean, they're really taking
Speaker:off right now and they're also.
Speaker:, providing monetization for, creators who meet their requirements
Speaker:and you want to understand the importance of shorts because they're
Speaker:competing again with things like TikTok and with Instagram reels.
Speaker:And so they're really pushing shorts right now.
Speaker:And even if you don't have time, To create long form content.
Speaker:You could get started on YouTube by creating YouTube shorts, which
Speaker:is short form video, and you can maximize, your reach that way.
Speaker:You know, while you're creating long form content in the backend, and you
Speaker:can even do this where you can take your long form content, you can take
Speaker:one of your long form videos and you can create multiple shorts from it.
Speaker:And you might have, you know, 10 shorts from like a 40 minute video that you.
Speaker:And then you can, you know, post one a day and you can get those out there and that's
Speaker:gonna help you grow your channel as well.
Speaker:So I hope you found this episode useful because I know that
Speaker:YouTube , is continuing to be a.
Speaker:Big, big thing in 2023, and a lot of content creators who have never even
Speaker:thought about having a YouTube channel are getting inspired to start their channel.
Speaker:Also, they're gonna be doing some great things with, you know,
Speaker:with podcasting, and I'm gonna be doing an episode on that as well.
