Shownotes

National Service (NS) in Singapore has indeed become very different over the years – some may say for better or for worse, but it remains an important rite of passage for males in Singapore. In fact, it is a major milestone not just for the enlistees, but perhaps more so for the parents who have to “release” their sons to what they might be seen as “hardship” and “danger”.

As Singapore celebrates National Day in August, we want to highlight the significant roles parents and family members play in supporting our sons in serving National Service.

In this episode, we discuss how parents can help prepare their sons for National Service, how family dynamics may change because of NS and the perspectives the family should adopt as our sons enlist and serve the nation. Join our host Aaron Ng, as he dialogues with Calvin and Lucas Chin, on their NS journey as father and son.

Calvin is a father of four sons, with his 2 older sons currently serving their NS. He is aged 47 and works as an account manager. He enjoys cycling and playing the guitar. Lucas, aged 20, is Calvin's eldest son and he is currently a National Serviceman Full-time (NSF) with the Republic of Singapore Air Force, 608 Squadron.
