:So what happens?

:So a text message gets ignored, a spouse
seems distant, a friend doesn't call

:back, and suddenly we're anxious, we're
overwhelmed, we're overthinking, we're

:people-pleasing, we're shutting down.

:We're literally preparing for disaster.

:The problem is what we're often
reacting to is an old wound

:instead of the current situation.

:So today, I wanna teach you a tool that
I use with my clients all the time.

:I call it the trigger to truth method.

:The next time you feel emotionally
activated, do these three steps.

:Three simple steps.

:You know I like to keep it simple, guys.

:Number one, name the trigger.

:Ask yourself, "What just happened?"

:Not the story, not the interpretation,
not any of what you're thinking

:you think, just the facts.

:For example, if your boss corrects
you, instead of d- going into the

:spiral of how much they don't like
you and how they always think you're

:wrong and everything else, just say to
yourself, "My boss corrected my report.

:My husband didn't text me back right away.

:My daughter sounded irritated."

:Not why, not the story, just the facts.

:Stick with the facts.

:Number two, name the fear.

:What does it bring up in you?

:Ask yourself, "What am
I afraid this means?"

:So this is where it gets a little
more interesting because most people

:will say, "They don't like me.

:I'm being rejected.

:I'm not important.

:I'm gonna get in trouble," whatever it is.

:Notice how quickly your
nervous system creates meaning.

:Just notice how quickly it does that.

:You have a story before you ever
even process what was going on

:or decided to look at the facts.

:So now, number three, I want you to ask
yourself the most powerful question:

:How old does this feeling feel?

:Not how old you are, not 57.

:I'm not saying this happened right
now, but how old does the feeling feel?

:Because many times what you're
going to discover is that your

:reaction isn't coming from this
57-year-old self, in my case.

:It's coming from my seven-year-old self
or my 12-year-old self, or the teenager

:who was constantly criticized and berated
every time they did something wrong.

:So once you recognize that, you
can say that makes sense," but

:that was then and this is now.

:And here's the magic in this.

:You don't have to fix the feeling.

:You just have to stop believing it.

by fighting your nervous system, not by

:shaming yourself, but by recognizing when
your past is trying to run your present.
