Speaker:

>> Steve: I describe that movie, um,

Speaker:

that movie to me. It's when it was

Speaker:

good, it was great, and when

Speaker:

it was bad, Russell Crowe was

Speaker:

singing.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Mhm.

Speaker:

Hey, upper east siders, and all you scandal loving listeners

Speaker:

out there, you just tuned into the non judging

Speaker:

breakfast pod where the coffee is strong, the

Speaker:

waffles are fresh, and the gossip is hotter than

Speaker:

ever. I'm, um, Leif your seasoned gossip girl

Speaker:

veteran.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And I'm Steve, your newbie, your

Speaker:

greenhorn, your. I don't know, Leif

Speaker:

what's the word for the new kid on the block

Speaker:

in Gossip Girl?

Speaker:

>> Leif: I think they would label you as a project. You

Speaker:

know, girls who have the potential to be a blairite.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Well, then dress me in an Eleanor Waldorf

Speaker:

original and let's get started.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Sounds good.

Speaker:

>> Steve: So folks, here's the deal. Leif has been living and

Speaker:

breathing gossip girl since the beginning, and I am

Speaker:

watching for the very first time

Speaker:

together. You're. We're your dynamic duo. And we're going to

Speaker:

be dissecting scene by scene to go

Speaker:

through all of the romance,

Speaker:

the drama, and the sometimes

Speaker:

questionable fashion choices of this

Speaker:

iconic 2007 tv show.

Speaker:

>> Leif: That's right. Each week we'll break down the latest

Speaker:

schemes, secret hookups and couture

Speaker:

catastrophes. And trust me, there are plenty of them.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And, um, because we are all about inclusivity

Speaker:

here, there is always a seat for you at the

Speaker:

non judging breakfast table, whether you are a

Speaker:

newbie like me or an old veteran

Speaker:

like Leif Go ahead and grab your

Speaker:

coffee or pour a mimosa if it's one of

Speaker:

those kind of mornings. And let's get ready to

Speaker:

dish on the gossip.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, let's go ahead and jump right in. Today we're

Speaker:

going to be talking about season one, episode

Speaker:

four, bad news Blair.

Speaker:

And, uh, Steve, do you know what that, uh, is

Speaker:

referencing?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, boy, do I. I mean,

Speaker:

I grew up on the bad news bears,

Speaker:

right? Like, that was like

Speaker:

in an iconic Keanu Reeves.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Right?

Speaker:

>> Steve: I'm sorry, folks, we're gonna have to

Speaker:

call this off.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Now. Of course, we are talking about Billy Bob Thornton

Speaker:

movie. Of course, we were talking about the 19, uh,

Speaker:

76 movie, uh, starring Walter

Speaker:

Matthew.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, my gosh. Yeah, that.

Speaker:

Yeah, uh, it was, you know, was one of

Speaker:

those movies of the childhood. And like, because it was

Speaker:

also like every kid playing Little League

Speaker:

felt like they were in some way, shape or form

Speaker:

on the bad news bears. You know, like,

Speaker:

because we all. Because we all thought

Speaker:

we were playing like Mike Schmidt, but we're

Speaker:

really playing like a bunch of kids playing Little

Speaker:

League, you know, um, and

Speaker:

I remember, like,

Speaker:

that movie just really resonating with me as a

Speaker:

kid because of that. And, like. And

Speaker:

granted, there was

Speaker:

absolutely no I batting in my house at the

Speaker:

racism in the movie or the. Or the

Speaker:

other, like, hugely problematic

Speaker:

moments, which also kind

Speaker:

of, you know, it just. That was very

Speaker:

much a part of my upbringing, you know?

Speaker:

>> Leif: This episode was directed by

Speaker:

Patrick Norris. Uh, he's a

Speaker:

veteran tv director. Done, um, a

Speaker:

lot of stuff, but he is specifically, uh, a

Speaker:

king of the teen drama

Speaker:

genre. Uh, you got my so called

Speaker:

life, Dawson's Creek, Party of Five,

Speaker:

the OC, Roswell, Chuck,

Speaker:

the Vampire Diaries, Heart of Dixie,

Speaker:

greek, pretty little liars, and

Speaker:

if you will notice, several, uh, Josh

Speaker:

short shows on there. Pretty much. Pretty much every

Speaker:

Josh short show, uh, he has been on.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: As a director.

Speaker:

>> Steve: They seem. They seem to

Speaker:

work together. Yes.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, he is, ah, one of his. Go to Josh

Speaker:

Roche's. Go to. Guys.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Do we know how many episodes he has done

Speaker:

of the show?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, I can look it up.

Speaker:

Um, see,

Speaker:

Patrick Norris, he

Speaker:

did

Speaker:

gossip girl.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Gossip girl.

Speaker:

>> Leif: He's done, uh, quite a bit. We got parenthood, huh? Even done

Speaker:

episodes of izombie Nashville.

Speaker:

I think that's also a Josh Schwartz show. Carrie

Speaker:

diaries, gossip Girl. He did eight

Speaker:

episodes of Gossip Girl.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Eight episodes of Gossip Girl. Okay. Okay.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I had a little over 100, so.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Anyways, um, this 8%.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Story, um, by, uh, Josh,

Speaker:

um, interesting because this, uh,

Speaker:

he will later become the showrunner for

Speaker:

gallery.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And it's also funny because I feel like.

Speaker:

Is this the first time that we have seen

Speaker:

the story by not credited to the author of

Speaker:

the novels?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, no, this is just the first time I stopped

Speaker:

listing that.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Okay.

Speaker:

>> Leif: That's just what it has on, like, IMDb.

Speaker:

Um, but I realized, like, that's not really that they're just listing

Speaker:

the producers and, like, yeah,

Speaker:

other people.

Speaker:

>> Steve: You're. All right.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, this is.

Speaker:

>> Steve: She's listed as a creator, too. Yes.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Cecily Fazgar. Um, but so,

Speaker:

yeah, so Stesli, Joshua, Stephanie

Speaker:

Savage, executive producers.

Speaker:

But, uh, if you watch the opening credits, uh, this episode

Speaker:

shows written by Josh Saffron.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Right.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, we'll go ahead and jump right into act

Speaker:

one. Uh, Blair is

Speaker:

dreaming. She is Audrey Hepburn in

Speaker:

breakfast at Tiffany, except she is on the outside

Speaker:

looking in at Serena Moonrifer

Speaker:

plays.

Speaker:

>> Steve: This is my dream.

Speaker:

Not anymore. So

Speaker:

great. Like, it's just so. Yeah, I

Speaker:

love that. That, you

Speaker:

know, clearly, she has this fear. Like, I've, uh,

Speaker:

made some sort of white flag

Speaker:

gesture, and now Serena and I are kind of working

Speaker:

stuff out.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And she's just gonna take everything from me.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, but now it's just gonna go right back to how it used

Speaker:

to be. Yep.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And we see Blair awaken in the penthouse

Speaker:

to the sound of Serena talking with

Speaker:

Eleanor. Uh, Eleanor is

Speaker:

extremely undermining towards Blair, but

Speaker:

fawning over Serena.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, like, he. It's weird.

Speaker:

Like, you're being weird about it.

Speaker:

And this is the first time that we've seen new mom.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes, this is the first introduction to Margaret

Speaker:

Collins as Eleanor Waldorf.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Okay. Right. And I don't

Speaker:

think that I actually even

Speaker:

noticed before,

Speaker:

because it's been two episodes.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, she's missing episode two and, uh, three.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, it's like.

Speaker:

It feels like second

Speaker:

Becky almost. Only less.

Speaker:

You know, only like she got second becky

Speaker:

only on her first episode. Yes, but

Speaker:

you're right. Like, I feel like she really.

Speaker:

She really has the bite

Speaker:

that this character

Speaker:

needs.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, so I have actually gone back and read, and the reason

Speaker:

why she was replaced was because she looked.

Speaker:

>> Steve: The other actress looked you young. Yeah. Yeah,

Speaker:

she. She really did. And you already have Rufus,

Speaker:

who.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And Lily is also very young.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and Lily's pretty young looking, too,

Speaker:

so. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Anyways, we got Chuck. Uh,

Speaker:

and Nate are at, ah, Chuck's suite again, hiding

Speaker:

valuable objects before a party. Chuck, uh,

Speaker:

is the party planner, and everyone is forced to follow his

Speaker:

plans. We are first introduced to

Speaker:

Carter basin, played by

Speaker:

Sebastian Stan.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Where do I know this guy from?

Speaker:

I really recognize him. Is he.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Is he from think metal arm?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Uh, what's it called? Arrow

Speaker:

or, uh, bigger.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Much bigger.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Bigger metal arm? Oh,

Speaker:

he's Bucky.

Speaker:

Holy shit. I just spent that

Speaker:

episode. Like, why do I know this guy? Where

Speaker:

do I know him from? Oh, boy.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Fine. We're good.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Where do I know him from? Where. Why do I know this

Speaker:

guy?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes, he plays Bucky Barnes and many other

Speaker:

things. This, um, was before he got hit

Speaker:

it really big. Um, uh, he

Speaker:

actually is a recurring character through several

Speaker:

seasons. Um, I won't spoil too

Speaker:

much, but, uh, uh, yeah, uh, uh, he

Speaker:

kind of started to fade from the show

Speaker:

about when he got the role in, uh, that

Speaker:

version of les mis with, uh, Hugh Jackman.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, yeah, I described that

Speaker:

movie. Um, uh, that movie

Speaker:

to me. It's when it was good, it

Speaker:

was great, and when it was

Speaker:

bad, Russell Crowe was singing.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, that was my interesting

Speaker:

choice.

Speaker:

>> Steve: That movie, that. That play. First

Speaker:

of all, I was a promise, that movie, since I first

Speaker:

heard the soundtrack in when I was a

Speaker:

kid, and I saw that show. That was a

Speaker:

birthday present for me when it came to Philadelphia on

Speaker:

its first tour.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Wow.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Like, my dad took me to see les mis for my

Speaker:

birthday, and it was amazing. And then I went

Speaker:

again when I was in high school, um, a friend

Speaker:

of mine, it was where my love for theater came from,

Speaker:

and, like, my love for acting and being on stage and

Speaker:

love for music. And music. I don't even love

Speaker:

musicals, but I love that musical.

Speaker:

Um, and so. And I remember just

Speaker:

they for years teased that movie, and then we got the

Speaker:

fucking Liam Neeson movie

Speaker:

that was like, really?

Speaker:

This is what you're like? Oh, a happy ending.

Speaker:

Oh, great. This is the lame is. I

Speaker:

knew, like, you would have just been a

Speaker:

fucking story. I would have been okay with it, but God damn,

Speaker:

did they fucking tank that movie. So

Speaker:

then when they finally give me that

Speaker:

musical, they give me fucking

Speaker:

russell crowe, who I'm, uh,

Speaker:

not gonna. I'm not criticizing the guy as an actor,

Speaker:

but I'm gonna criticize him as a singer. When you're singing

Speaker:

some of my favorite fucking songs in

Speaker:

musical theater stars is possibly my

Speaker:

favorite song throughout all

Speaker:

of you know. It's above somewhere over the

Speaker:

rainbow. It's, uh, above fucking. There's a place for us.

Speaker:

It's above fucking. You know,

Speaker:

I never heard them singing till

Speaker:

there was you. Like, I, uh. Like, it isn't probably my all

Speaker:

time fucking.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, it's definitely some questionable casting.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So he's sorry.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I'm back.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Serena and Blair are walking down the street, and two

Speaker:

random men leer at Serena, and Blair is

Speaker:

jealous. This leads to a conversation about

Speaker:

how Blair's mother favors Serena.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. I mean, and it's like,

Speaker:

no, no.

Speaker:

Like, we all just saw what we

Speaker:

saw.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Like, she. She was

Speaker:

wanting over. She didn't wake

Speaker:

Blair up? Uh.

Speaker:

Um, yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So Serena sees Dan, and they flirt

Speaker:

until Blair comes out and insults Dan's choice

Speaker:

of sandwich. And then they continue to flirt and

Speaker:

make loose plans to meet up in the

Speaker:

future.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um. Um, I actually, there's one thing I want to address from the

Speaker:

previous scene, too, that I. That I forgot to mention,

Speaker:

which was Eleanor telling Blair

Speaker:

what to eat. Yeah. Eleanor

Speaker:

very specifically being like, oh, well,

Speaker:

not the. The. Not the yogurt. The fruit has less fat in

Speaker:

it. I lost two pounds while you were gone.

Speaker:

>> Leif: She says. She said, not the, uh.

Speaker:

>> Steve: She's.

Speaker:

>> Leif: She's going for the croissant. Instead of tucking into

Speaker:

that, why don't you try the low fat yogurt?

Speaker:

>> Steve: That's what it is. Yeah. And.

Speaker:

And when she turns to her like that,

Speaker:

like, I felt the dagger go into my heart

Speaker:

when she said that. And then Blair's

Speaker:

response. I lost two pounds

Speaker:

while you were away. Twisted the

Speaker:

knife. It was heart wrenching. It

Speaker:

just. Really just. That was the.

Speaker:

The most sympathy I think I've

Speaker:

felt for Blair since her last interaction

Speaker:

with her mom.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: You know, they're definitely starting to give.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Blair, uh, some more characterization other than just the evil

Speaker:

bitch.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, she's being. She's being

Speaker:

treated.

Speaker:

Yeah, she. You're. You're. Yeah, it

Speaker:

was. And you're getting layers.

Speaker:

>> Leif: You're getting layers.

Speaker:

>> Steve: You're getting layers. And you're seeing those. The relationship

Speaker:

that she has with food again. M. And that it's

Speaker:

coming from her mom having

Speaker:

her own projections onto her.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Which kind of makes you think she probably would have wanted that

Speaker:

pork sandwich. I know I kind of wanted that.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, yeah. Oh, fuck, yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Like, hot pork and roasted cheese. Uh, melted

Speaker:

cheese.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And. Man. M. There. And again,

Speaker:

there's Serena, and her mom doesn't say

Speaker:

anything to Serena, you know, which is

Speaker:

also really kind of like.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And you see Serena feels bad about it, too.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. She.

Speaker:

>> Leif: She immediately puts the. Puts the bread down.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. And.

Speaker:

Yeah. And it's like, you

Speaker:

see that Serena gets it. And Serena is,

Speaker:

uh, possibly the only one who is really

Speaker:

fully aware of the dynamic with their own

Speaker:

mom, that she's very aware of

Speaker:

her relationship with her mom because there isn't one

Speaker:

there. But I think that it gives

Speaker:

her a little more perspective on everyone else's

Speaker:

relationships with their parents,

Speaker:

you know?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Correct. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: So sorry. I wanted to, like, at that point, because I think

Speaker:

it's really important to Blair's character.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes, I agree.

Speaker:

Uh, Nate and Chuck are catching up with

Speaker:

Carter back at the party. Nate is

Speaker:

enamored. Chuck is bored.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Um, yeah.

Speaker:

And I. It's funny because, like, I make a note

Speaker:

later on that there's not really a party of the week, but I guess

Speaker:

there's kind of a starting off the party with the party of

Speaker:

the week, and it is this big, like,

Speaker:

brogasm party, it seems.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, so the reason why this episode

Speaker:

and these are kind of the less good

Speaker:

episodes is you got two. The stories

Speaker:

are completely separate, so you gotta have

Speaker:

two parties. You got the one is the lost

Speaker:

weekend with Nate and Chuck.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And then you got the other party, which is the photo shoot.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Right.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Because you have Dan, Blair, and Serena all there.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Mhm. I wouldn't really call that a

Speaker:

party.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It's not a party, but it's an

Speaker:

event that they all. It's an event that they show up.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I'll give you that. It's just that, and I

Speaker:

think that. Well, and, um, we can. We'll address it

Speaker:

later.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And photographs are kind of like a party. I mean, there's music

Speaker:

going on. You got food laid out.

Speaker:

>> Steve: My issue with it is that

Speaker:

until now, major

Speaker:

catharsis. Catharsis.

Speaker:

Catharsis happen.

Speaker:

And, you know, all of those, like, major

Speaker:

climatic moments happen when

Speaker:

all of our characters are together.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, that's what I'm saying.

Speaker:

>> Steve: This is.

Speaker:

>> Leif: This is the first episode where you get the big split.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And those are not the episodes that I think

Speaker:

are not as good.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. I. And I'm. And I am with you

Speaker:

on that assumption. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, anyway, so we get that,

Speaker:

um, a little bit more. So we get that.

Speaker:

We get that Carter, uh, is

Speaker:

when Nate and Chuck were in 8th grade, Carter was

Speaker:

a senior.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So we kind of all knew that guy in high school. They're

Speaker:

still kind of coming around to parties and.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And so I totally get Chuck here.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And at the same time, there are those

Speaker:

people that are like, wow, that guy's so cool because he, like,

Speaker:

totally went out and did his own.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And it is typically the jocks,

Speaker:

too.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: They're like, oh, uh, he was so good at the sport that I play.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I wish I could be like him.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Which Nate. That's totally neat.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. On brand, this guy seemed. This

Speaker:

guy is living Nate's. Nate's dream.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: You know, I don't want my dad's fucking money. I

Speaker:

just want to go and do my own thing and earn

Speaker:

my own way. And. And

Speaker:

also, poor little Nate.

Speaker:

Adorable, adorable Nate.

Speaker:

You can't do that without your dad.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Oh, sweetie. Oh, sweetie.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh. Oh, sweetie. If you were to try to go off

Speaker:

the grid and go backpacking across Europe,

Speaker:

guess how you're flying there.

Speaker:

Your daddy's money. Yes.

Speaker:

You will do that if your daddy tells you you can.

Speaker:

Otherwise, what, are you working

Speaker:

at Starbucks and saving up?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, we see what Carter is, uh, up

Speaker:

to later in the episode to try to get his

Speaker:

money.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Right, right.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, and then so we get, uh, back at the

Speaker:

penthouse, Eleanor and her employees are

Speaker:

discussing a fascist shoot. While blair

Speaker:

and Serena admire the clothes, they are

Speaker:

looking for a new model, and the plan is to use

Speaker:

blair. Blair seems nervous, but Serena

Speaker:

is pushing really hard for Blair to have this.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Great moment for the two of

Speaker:

them where blair. Serena catches

Speaker:

on. Blair's being timid about it. You know,

Speaker:

I, uh. You don't even fully know, if Blair's paying

Speaker:

attention until Serena's like, yes, she'll

Speaker:

do it. And then you realize blair

Speaker:

was playing paying attention

Speaker:

again, the acting of Leighton meester,

Speaker:

where she's.

Speaker:

You really buy that she is

Speaker:

trying to ignore this thing that's about to happen for

Speaker:

her, this thing that she really wants and.

Speaker:

And has never been able to get it because

Speaker:

it always goes to Serena. Yeah, and.

Speaker:

But. And, uh, kudos

Speaker:

to Eleanor for being, like, the best person to

Speaker:

represent. My brand is

Speaker:

my daughter. Yeah. She looks amazing in these

Speaker:

dresses. She is beautiful.

Speaker:

My daughter is beautiful. She looks beautiful in

Speaker:

these dresses. Who better to represent my

Speaker:

brand? Kudos to Eleanor Waldorf

Speaker:

once again. Beautiful way to tie up that character

Speaker:

arc. She is a good mom after all.

Speaker:

I'm glad to see it. We can close the door on that,

Speaker:

that she made the right decision. Thank. Thank

Speaker:

you.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes.

Speaker:

Um, so, yeah, we get that. And then, uh,

Speaker:

Blair is in her room discussing the fascist shoe with her

Speaker:

friends, and dan, uh, calls Serena, but Blair

Speaker:

answers the phone once Serena gets on the

Speaker:

phone. Dan and Serena set a date for

Speaker:

tonight.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, they're. And they're looking forward to getting

Speaker:

together. Blair,

Speaker:

you don't have to be like that. But, like, they

Speaker:

finally do talk. They get their date arranged.

Speaker:

Um, and I'm sure that's going to go off without a hitch,

Speaker:

too.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, of course.

Speaker:

Nothing could possibly go wrong.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, and we get Serena

Speaker:

showing the girls how to do the pop.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, yeah, that's right. Uh, they're all.

Speaker:

Yeah. Yeah. And, um,

Speaker:

I will be bringing this scene back up later

Speaker:

when we talk about the. Our

Speaker:

fashion of the week, our favorite outfit of the

Speaker:

week. Mine was actually in this scene.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, also, um,

Speaker:

going back to that last scene, um, we actually

Speaker:

got introduced to a new recurring character, uh,

Speaker:

Laurel, uh, who is kind of like

Speaker:

Eleanor's second in command.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Okay, I didn't really.

Speaker:

Oh, okay. Yeah. The woman who was helping

Speaker:

organize the shooting. So she's. Yeah, she.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, the dark. The dark skin, the light hair.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah. And the glasses.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yep. I know. Yeah, exactly. You're talking about.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um. Um, yeah. Okay, so that. Yeah, she. She is a

Speaker:

recurring character. That's, uh, she'll be back.

Speaker:

Um, and then so we get. Rufus

Speaker:

is talking with a beautiful art dealer at

Speaker:

his gallery. Does, um, Rufus also have a

Speaker:

date for tonight?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, um. Um,

Speaker:

it sounds like he's at least got an appointment or something

Speaker:

that he wants to look good for. Um,

Speaker:

so that is interesting for

Speaker:

him.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Our first introduction to Bex.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Uh,

Speaker:

yeah. Who. That's not her scene

Speaker:

yet, right. That's not him getting ready for it.

Speaker:

>> Leif: No. Uh,

Speaker:

she's looking at the painting, and.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, right.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And she says, hold it for me. I think the

Speaker:

person I'm working for won it.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, I'll be back. Yeah, that's right. That's

Speaker:

right.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, yeah, so we have that scene, and

Speaker:

then we. The lost weekend continues out on the

Speaker:

basketball court. Chuck and Carter nearly get into a

Speaker:

fight. Carter leaves, but sets up plans with Nate

Speaker:

for later.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah. And, uh,

Speaker:

that's where they're setting up the plans to play the

Speaker:

poker game, right? Yes. He's

Speaker:

just kind of telling you.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes. He's dropping hints.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And, yeah, we got chuck in his basketball outfit. It was,

Speaker:

uh, interesting, to say the least.

Speaker:

Outfit.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Uh, well, I mean,

Speaker:

it's. It's Chuck being Chuck, really?

Speaker:

You know, like.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But yeah. Just to reveal the. Behind the

Speaker:

phantom curtain, it is definitely one of the more iconic Chuck

Speaker:

outfits. It's very talked about and mocked.

Speaker:

>> Steve: That's funny because I actually wasn't paying much attention to it.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It's, like, incredibly bad.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, that's funny. I'll have to go. I'll have to look at that.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It's, like. It's, like, shorts and, like, it's, like, a jersey

Speaker:

type t shirt but, like, crown, like, different color

Speaker:

crowns on it. Uh, and his hair is doing this

Speaker:

weird, like, weird shit going on with his hair. Uh,

Speaker:

yeah, it's. It's pretty big.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yep.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It's mocked pretty bad on the Internet.

Speaker:

Um, so then we see that was that

Speaker:

scene we, um, get

Speaker:

to at the photo shoot. Blair is not

Speaker:

impressing the photographer. Serena

Speaker:

tries to encourage Blair to loosen up.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Um, yeah. And

Speaker:

you immediately see where this is going. They're

Speaker:

like. And, like. And you see Serena

Speaker:

is definitely walking up with the

Speaker:

intent of my friend is

Speaker:

drowning. I hear them talking about

Speaker:

it, and. And, you know,

Speaker:

Blair having that wall up

Speaker:

initially and being like,

Speaker:

get out of here. Like. Like, oh, I knew you're gonna do this, and

Speaker:

you're gonna try somebody. She's. No, I just wanted to help you out. And then

Speaker:

when Blair is. Looks over and sees them talking about her and turns

Speaker:

back and is like, help me.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And she does. And. And they do

Speaker:

have fun together. Yeah, they do have

Speaker:

chemistry, and it is a great

Speaker:

shoot with the two of them. Um,

Speaker:

but you kind of see that Serena

Speaker:

is just loving the camera, and the

Speaker:

camera is loving her, and they all. And there's

Speaker:

this consensus between the

Speaker:

photographer that. What's the

Speaker:

assistant's name?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Laurel.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Laurel um, and the.

Speaker:

The two of them both have the agreement that she

Speaker:

looks fucking amazing in the

Speaker:

dress, but the camera, she's not doing anything for the

Speaker:

camera, and. And

Speaker:

she's not, you know, she. When. Yeah, she is very

Speaker:

flat and what? In her affect and in her

Speaker:

demeanor and very nervous and very prim, which,

Speaker:

again, you got to throw it deleting meester that,

Speaker:

like, to just be able

Speaker:

to portray that

Speaker:

in, you know,

Speaker:

when, you know, she doesn't have. When she, you

Speaker:

know, it's hard to do

Speaker:

something that

Speaker:

you're really good at it. Sometimes. It's really hard to do

Speaker:

it badly. In fact, the people. The

Speaker:

best, it's, like, some of the best among the

Speaker:

people, uh, are the ones who can do it badly, if that

Speaker:

makes sense.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, so, um.

Speaker:

Um,

Speaker:

Serena calls Dan to cancel the date as

Speaker:

he is already waiting in line at the movie theater,

Speaker:

he leave or say, ah. As he's already

Speaker:

waiting in line, he leaves with a frustrated

Speaker:

sigh.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. And

Speaker:

she bails on him. And she bails on him for a

Speaker:

photo shoot. And the thing is, like, she is

Speaker:

being a good friend here.

Speaker:

Um, in fact, we actually didn't even. I don't think we

Speaker:

addressed the time that they bumped into

Speaker:

each other earlier, and.

Speaker:

And he was like, why are you guys hanging out? Like,

Speaker:

why are you doing this? And. And that was

Speaker:

the other time that I was like, blair, you don't have to be like this.

Speaker:

Like. Like, why does she come up? And it is

Speaker:

immediately.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And Stan was not privy to this,

Speaker:

the under the bridge scene.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Right. But at the same time, Dan

Speaker:

has done dick to

Speaker:

Blair. Dan has done nothing

Speaker:

but, like, punch chuck in the face for

Speaker:

sexually assaulting his sister. Like, that is the

Speaker:

most that he has done to harm anybody

Speaker:

else. So Blair coming up and just being a,

Speaker:

uh, fucking asshole to

Speaker:

ten just for, like, existing on the

Speaker:

sidewalk is, like, why?

Speaker:

>> Leif: I think he just kind. I mean, they've already gone to

Speaker:

school for three years, so I think he just

Speaker:

kind of, as she's, like, the queen of the school. Like,

Speaker:

he kind of knows that that's just Blair.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Uh, but it's also, at the same time, it's

Speaker:

like, it is just Blair, but,

Speaker:

like, he's a nobody to

Speaker:

her. So, like, why are you. Why. Like,

Speaker:

my beef was. My beef was never with you,

Speaker:

Blair. Like, why are you, like, you

Speaker:

were upset with her and took it out on me. Why are you still

Speaker:

taking it out with me if you guys are getting

Speaker:

along? Oh, that.

Speaker:

>> Leif: It's not. He's not taking out. It's not that she's

Speaker:

just classist.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Well, yeah. And, and that is very evident

Speaker:

there, too.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And that is the end of the first act. So, uh, we're going to go

Speaker:

ahead and take a break.

Speaker:

All right. We are back for act two.

Speaker:

It is nighttime in the city, and the art dealer

Speaker:

arrives at the Rufus's gallery. The art

Speaker:

dealer, Becks, asks Rufus out to

Speaker:

celebrate. But Rufus isn't ready yet, despite living in

Speaker:

different zip codes from his estranged wife.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Ex wife. I

Speaker:

know, I know, but, like, come on, dude,

Speaker:

dude, dude, dude.

Speaker:

It's an awful long commute. She

Speaker:

says, dude, that's not over

Speaker:

yet.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Give our man Rufus of credit.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I just, I just have this, like, um,

Speaker:

you know, I'm projecting because, like, my first

Speaker:

marriage ended by tearing the band aid off one hair at a time for

Speaker:

a year. And it's like, dude,

Speaker:

Beck's is, like, right there.

Speaker:

>> Leif: She's here. She's right. Right here, right now.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Like her. She likes you. Like, get some coffee, bra.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, but, ah, I mean,

Speaker:

yeah, he's.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Clearly more interested, but

Speaker:

fair enough.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But Rufus a good guy and

Speaker:

he is still married. Technically. Yeah.

Speaker:

He's not ready to cross that boundary.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And

Speaker:

I'm not privy to any of the conversations that the two of them

Speaker:

had. I just figure that when you're living in different zip

Speaker:

codes and not really talking to

Speaker:

each other, um,

Speaker:

that, like, I don't know, maybe I just feel like

Speaker:

it's implied that you're allowed to date other

Speaker:

people, but I guess I would have that conversation. Should

Speaker:

I be in that?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, uh. Wasn't it like, said that it was like, uh, ah, an artist

Speaker:

for. She, like, she was doing art stuff or something. She was kind of, like

Speaker:

getting away just to do art or something.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, but like, but it sounds like she's getting

Speaker:

away to a place where she doesn't need to necessarily

Speaker:

come back. That's my impression.

Speaker:

Is that, like, she's.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, but, but still, they have, they

Speaker:

haven't, they haven't talked about yet, though.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And the thing is that by the end of this episode, they

Speaker:

do that, like, the which, not to

Speaker:

jump ahead, but Dan's point of

Speaker:

view is really a lot. Also a lot of how

Speaker:

I'm feeling towards Rufus's situation.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Oh, yeah. And while I agree that

Speaker:

that's probably the situation,

Speaker:

at the same time, Rufus.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Is a good guy doing the right thing.

Speaker:

>> Leif: He's a good guy.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I get that. I just, I just.

Speaker:

And I feel for him. M. You know, I feel for him.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um.

Speaker:

Um, so Nate and Chuck

Speaker:

are arguing outside a pub. Chuck

Speaker:

seems to like. Like he loves the life set up for him,

Speaker:

but Nate still wants out. Nate leaves the

Speaker:

party and to potentially meet up with Carter for an

Speaker:

underground poker game.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, and. And, like,

Speaker:

Chuck makes some points to Nate, but, like,

Speaker:

you know, uh, kind of what I was saying earlier, you

Speaker:

can't just go off and do your

Speaker:

own thing. Like, when you do that, you kind of

Speaker:

close big doors, and you're just going to be on your

Speaker:

own at that point. Yeah. Like, if you go to

Speaker:

that other college, you're doing it on fucking student

Speaker:

loans and. And dorm

Speaker:

food, and you're not living the life that you

Speaker:

think you're living until you end up going to Dartmouth.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, uh, he points out that Carter's just here. He's not, you know,

Speaker:

mooching off his parents. He's just mooching off us now.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah, he's. Yeah.

Speaker:

And he's still mooching off of somebody. Yes.

Speaker:

Yeah. And. And

Speaker:

it's funny. When Chuck bass is the voice

Speaker:

of reason and when Chuck Bass is the one

Speaker:

whose scumbag radar is going off,

Speaker:

I want to listen. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: You gotta wonder what, uh, what Carter's done in the past.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And. And I don't even

Speaker:

necessarily. I

Speaker:

didn't even make that leap more than

Speaker:

I just saw Chuck

Speaker:

as just seeing. Seeing

Speaker:

this play out before that. It's not the first time that

Speaker:

he's seen someone like Carter, that he's seen someone who's

Speaker:

done something like this, you know, who

Speaker:

threw it all away, and

Speaker:

you know, what ended up washed up and

Speaker:

living off of their friends. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So, uh, Dan comes.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Excuse me.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Dan comes back to the loft and talks to Rufus about

Speaker:

Serena missing the date and how her friends

Speaker:

and world just seemed completely alien to him.

Speaker:

Rufus compares Serena to a girl he used to

Speaker:

date? I wonder who that could

Speaker:

be.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And when. First of

Speaker:

all, I do love the line. I swam, um,

Speaker:

for a while. For a while until I

Speaker:

drowned. And if that

Speaker:

isn't, like, every

Speaker:

relationship in one way or another, you know,

Speaker:

like. And, you know, I'm.

Speaker:

I'm in a really amazing relationship

Speaker:

with my wife,

Speaker:

but I think that I feel like

Speaker:

that imagery is very hard, is very

Speaker:

easy to understand, especially with certain relationships. There

Speaker:

are those people that, like, you just want to try

Speaker:

to keep up with them, and no matter what you're doing

Speaker:

to try to keep up with them, you're never

Speaker:

going to. And eventually, you're

Speaker:

just going to have to, you

Speaker:

know, you're going to have to just let it go?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

And so we see Eleanor

Speaker:

tucks Blair into bed. Blair feels approval

Speaker:

from her mother, maybe for the first time in her

Speaker:

life.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. Fantastic

Speaker:

to have her mother's love. It is so

Speaker:

nice that they were able to make these decisions

Speaker:

together. And, uh, it is

Speaker:

so great to see that

Speaker:

they have developed this great

Speaker:

resolution. Good job. Close the door.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And I actually back to the previous scene. Um,

Speaker:

I like the way, uh, Dan describes Blair.

Speaker:

Um, everything he hates about the upper east

Speaker:

side distilled into 195

Speaker:

pound, doe eyed, bon mot

Speaker:

tossing, label whoring package of

Speaker:

girly evil.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I mean, Dan's definitely a writer.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's very, very, very

Speaker:

vivid, very imaginative, very good with

Speaker:

words.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, so, yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, so skipping past the scene we just talked about,

Speaker:

uh, Serena calls Dan and invites Dan to

Speaker:

the fashion shoot.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Are you looking for my sister?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Like, why. Why are you inviting

Speaker:

me to this thing? And, like.

Speaker:

Like,

Speaker:

no. In no way, shape or form is

Speaker:

that gonna sound like what is a fun

Speaker:

day to me.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, but he agreed in the end.

Speaker:

Yeah, she, uh.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Cuz he can't sing. Yes.

Speaker:

>> Leif: She cuts and she cuts them off. She basically hangs in the pun

Speaker:

for.

Speaker:

>> Steve: You to say, yeah, yeah, yeah. I'll buy you anything you

Speaker:

want from craft services. Isn't crash services usually

Speaker:

free? I'll see you. Ready. Click.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, and then.

Speaker:

So after that, we got at the back of the penthouse,

Speaker:

Eleanor is discussing the photo shoot with the

Speaker:

photographer. They decide to replace Blair

Speaker:

with Serena. Blair's worst fears are coming

Speaker:

true.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, and if I remember correctly, is that where they just

Speaker:

present her with the option? They didn't

Speaker:

actually. Eleanor

Speaker:

didn't broadcast her decision. They just

Speaker:

tell her that,

Speaker:

and she.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Kind of, like, she nods at the end, like, the final shots of her.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Like, acquiescing, but,

Speaker:

like. So once again, we have the parent

Speaker:

choosing money over their kid, too.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Again. So, uh, and, um, I feel

Speaker:

conflicted about this because in this spot, I think

Speaker:

this is the right choice. She's listening to the

Speaker:

experts. What she shouldn't have done

Speaker:

is put Blair in this position to begin with.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. And, well.

Speaker:

Well, I even get that because it was short notice.

Speaker:

And her rationale between. Behind having

Speaker:

Blair in there, but the other choice

Speaker:

that you had was the two of them together were working through

Speaker:

it and doing something and had some chemistry. She could have been

Speaker:

involved. You know, there were

Speaker:

other options and, like, to

Speaker:

then. Well. And how the rest plays out, you

Speaker:

know?

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, uh, I don't know how much this plays

Speaker:

in, but if you remember it was Serena that really

Speaker:

pushed for Blair to, like, they were, like, kind of, like, thinking

Speaker:

about it, and Serena's like, yes, do it, do it, do it.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah. Serena was always behind

Speaker:

Blair doing, but she.

Speaker:

>> Leif: No, like, she. But she's the one that, like, really pushed it to

Speaker:

happen. Like, uh, Eleanor was, like, on the fence, like, considering

Speaker:

it, and Serena is the one that pushed her.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, that is true. That is true.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And so that is the end of act

Speaker:

two. And so we go into act three.

Speaker:

Uh, Blair awakens for the photoshoot.

Speaker:

Clearly excited, Eleanor informs

Speaker:

Blair she has been replaced, but she blames

Speaker:

the photographer and fails to mention Serena

Speaker:

has replaced her. After Eleanor

Speaker:

leaves, Blair leaves a voicemail for

Speaker:

Serena to meet her at the shoot and crash it.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Uh, uh. Oh. Uh, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: That's not gonna end well.

Speaker:

>> Steve: No, not at all. And it is, like, you're not

Speaker:

being honest with your kid, and, like,

Speaker:

obviously your kid is gonna be mad about

Speaker:

this, and obviously, your kid's gonna

Speaker:

find out what you

Speaker:

did, like, their pictures that you're using to

Speaker:

advertise your company. You think she's not

Speaker:

gonna see what happened,

Speaker:

you know, and so, yeah, really shitty for Blair

Speaker:

to wake up to, but, yeah, so

Speaker:

she's gonna crash this.

Speaker:

Crash this, uh, photo shoot.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Mhm. Um,

Speaker:

and then so Lily returns the painting to

Speaker:

Rufus's gallery. Apparently, Lily and Allison

Speaker:

have beef, and Lily is the client of

Speaker:

Beck's.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Fantastic. It's so good

Speaker:

that, you know, and, like, the whole argument

Speaker:

is great. Like, how would she feel about this being

Speaker:

on my wall? And, like, you know,

Speaker:

the. The ex girlfriend

Speaker:

always has that certain

Speaker:

place. You know, there is

Speaker:

that, like, you know, we know

Speaker:

that Rufus and Lily have their history, and then

Speaker:

there. And now we're seeing that. That crosses into

Speaker:

Rufus's. Exactly. Or as his

Speaker:

wife.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So, like, what if

Speaker:

Donald, uh, Trump liked our podcast? How would you feel

Speaker:

about that?

Speaker:

You don't have to answer that.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I'd be like, why?

Speaker:

What vibe are you getting from me?

Speaker:

What reflecting do I need to do on

Speaker:

me.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I could see him being a big fan of the show.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Um, yeah.

Speaker:

Lyran

Speaker:

women. Yeah, I

Speaker:

could really see him being invented.

Speaker:

That makes me. That creeps me

Speaker:

out.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So small spoiler, uh,

Speaker:

Ivanka truck. But does make a, uh, cameo in season

Speaker:

four.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, I mean, but this is, like, before. This is,

Speaker:

like, free at Venice. Yeah, this is like. Yeah, this is when

Speaker:

they, like, they're. They're famous, but they're. They're not in the

Speaker:

politics yet. They're still. They're still New York Democrats.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Hanging out with the Clintons.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um. Um, so, yeah, anyways,

Speaker:

sidetrack.

Speaker:

Um, so Chuck is back at his suite

Speaker:

and discovers. Discovered he has been

Speaker:

robbed.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yep. The baseball. And was it a glove,

Speaker:

too? Baseball.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, and it was just a really fancy watch.

Speaker:

>> Steve: A watch stolen out of

Speaker:

it.

Speaker:

>> Leif: He locked it in the drawer.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But somehow someone still thought stole it.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And it was this Babe Ruth, uh, called shot

Speaker:

ball.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

As a baseball fan, that's got to.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Be worth quite a bit.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Like, that's.

Speaker:

Like, that's. That's

Speaker:

a beautiful piece of memorabilia, as you know, just

Speaker:

for the love of baseball and everything. Yeah.

Speaker:

Although I. I love. I love

Speaker:

Daniel Tosh's take on Babe Ruth, that Babe

Speaker:

Ruth was breaking records before black people could play the sport.

Speaker:

So where's his asterisk trip?

Speaker:

>> Leif: I don't think he's the first one to make that joke,

Speaker:

actually.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, no. He's the person that I heard say.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, so

Speaker:

Nate is playing poker with carter. Carter, uh,

Speaker:

really wants Nate to continue playing for some.

Speaker:

Some reason. I wonder why.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah. He's really pressuring

Speaker:

him to stay in the game where Nate was like, this is fun. I

Speaker:

had a good time, and then. And I think

Speaker:

Nate.

Speaker:

>> Leif: The adventures, just about the star man.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And I think Nate is

Speaker:

realizing that

Speaker:

something's not right.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, I don't think it's clicking yet. I don't think it's. That's. That's not

Speaker:

the scene.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Well, he's on. I mean, he's uncomfortable. You know, he's clearly

Speaker:

uncomfortable.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I mean, he's ready to go home. He's like, okay, I

Speaker:

want some. Um, it's that the smart play is to leave

Speaker:

while you're up.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Nate is really bad with

Speaker:

peer pressure. Yeah. Nate doesn't know how to

Speaker:

handle, you know? I mean, he

Speaker:

only spoke up to his dad for the first time recently,

Speaker:

so Nate doesn't know how to handle.

Speaker:

>> Leif: He's malleable.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. He. And he doesn't know how to say.

Speaker:

>> Leif: No to his friends, and I think Carter knew that.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And targeted Nate from the very beginning.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And, uh, then we see Blair shows up at the photo

Speaker:

show and is devastated to see she

Speaker:

was replaced by Serena. They have a huge argument,

Speaker:

and Dan accidentally overhears the confrontation.

Speaker:

More moon river place.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Mhm. And,

Speaker:

like, how do you say, like, yeah, your

Speaker:

mom tricked me into replacing you.

Speaker:

Like. Like, how

Speaker:

fucking disgusting. Like, she lies to her daughter

Speaker:

and lies to her daughter's friend.

Speaker:

In a way that it's like, how do you. Where.

Speaker:

To what end? What to what end? Are you

Speaker:

lying? When do you not realize. How do you not

Speaker:

realize that it's going to take one

Speaker:

conversation, you know?

Speaker:

>> Leif: So. But

Speaker:

is Serena oblivious, or is she

Speaker:

willfully dumb?

Speaker:

>> Steve: I mean, the whole thing about the test, the test

Speaker:

shoots, you know, they wanted to do some test

Speaker:

shoots while we waited for you. It's

Speaker:

a good. It's a good reason to be up there. Uh, but I

Speaker:

also think that

Speaker:

Serena loves the

Speaker:

attention, despite wanting

Speaker:

to get away from the attention. You know what I mean?

Speaker:

Like, she. She doesn't like what the

Speaker:

attention has brought her, but also

Speaker:

can't not have the attention.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, but, you know, in all fairness,

Speaker:

Serena does immediately confront Eleanor,

Speaker:

and, uh, she asked, you know, why she

Speaker:

didn't tell her the truth and then quits.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. Quits right then in there and walks. Walks

Speaker:

off. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And we. Course, we get. We get another scene

Speaker:

of, uh, Dan not being

Speaker:

recognized.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: By Eleanor.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah. But they. They

Speaker:

hadn't met before, though, had they?

Speaker:

>> Leif: No, they hadn't met, but, yeah, but, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Just another funny, though. Who are you? Yeah, who are

Speaker:

you?

Speaker:

>> Leif: What are you doing?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. I

Speaker:

don't know.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, yeah, because, like, there's, like, a bunch of people at the shoes.

Speaker:

Like, it'd be plausible that she wouldn't recognize every

Speaker:

person there.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But specifically him.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Right. This guy stands

Speaker:

out as being out of place. Yes.

Speaker:

Like, so many people could easily sneak onto a photo

Speaker:

shoot probably if they were dressed right, you

Speaker:

know? But this guy does not belong.

Speaker:

>> Leif: M. Um, and that is the end of

Speaker:

act three. So we're going to go ahead and get into the

Speaker:

epilogue.

Speaker:

Um, back in the dressing room, Dan and

Speaker:

Serena have a conversation.

Speaker:

Dan, as usual, is quick to judge, but

Speaker:

the scene ends with Dan staring dumbly at the wall

Speaker:

after Serena explains what really happened before

Speaker:

peacing out.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Dan.

Speaker:

Dan, let's. Dan, let's have a conversation.

Speaker:

Cause, dan, you gotta. You gotta be on your. Chill

Speaker:

a little bit. Cause. Cause, like, you

Speaker:

jump to conclusions way too quickly,

Speaker:

let people give you a conversation, and then make your

Speaker:

judgment. But, dude, just chill

Speaker:

a little bit. A little bit. Thank you,

Speaker:

Dan.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But, uh. Uh, and so I

Speaker:

gotta give props to Serena here. Uh,

Speaker:

she is very confident in her body that

Speaker:

she's at. You know, 16 year old is able

Speaker:

to just, like, change, like, right next to someone she has, like, a crush

Speaker:

on.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Props to her for confidence.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, she. Yeah. Well, and, you know, it's almost all

Speaker:

you know, it's that theater kid kind of,

Speaker:

you, uh, know, modeling theater kid.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, I guess.

Speaker:

>> Steve: And, like, you know, I remember

Speaker:

being in. In high school when we didn't

Speaker:

necessarily, we had, you know,

Speaker:

boys and girls areas to change, but there

Speaker:

were many quick changes, many things like that, that it would

Speaker:

just be, you know, clothes flying

Speaker:

everywhere to get that change done. And there

Speaker:

was always this rule of, like, we're not here

Speaker:

to, you know, check

Speaker:

each other out. Like, this is business. We are getting change. We are

Speaker:

walking out there. You never saw business. So,

Speaker:

like, I can understand that confidence because she's

Speaker:

probably been around that a lot of, like, yep,

Speaker:

I change. I change when I need to change because

Speaker:

this is how I've, you know, this is just part of

Speaker:

being in this kind of realm. Mm

Speaker:

hmm. But it does take a. But that

Speaker:

realm takes confidence. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, Dan goes and sits next to Blair, and they

Speaker:

have a heartfelt moment. They bond over their

Speaker:

shared parental abandonment issues.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. This is a fantastic scene.

Speaker:

Um, it's the first time that we

Speaker:

actually hear Dan

Speaker:

talk about his relationship with his

Speaker:

mom and his anger towards her

Speaker:

and how he

Speaker:

doesn't like her very much right now,

Speaker:

doesn't like her behavior right now

Speaker:

and feels abandoned by her

Speaker:

and mistreated by her. And

Speaker:

it's not the same thing that Blair is

Speaker:

going through, but it is a similar thing

Speaker:

that our moms aren't giving us what we

Speaker:

need. And it's a great moment between the two of

Speaker:

them where, you know, Blair

Speaker:

was so humbled in the previous episode

Speaker:

that in this episode, once again,

Speaker:

she just, you know, she.

Speaker:

She's able to have that kind of emotional connection

Speaker:

with someone she doesn't like. You know, when you walk in, it's

Speaker:

like, oh, great, you know?

Speaker:

>> Leif: But they. They both let their guard down, that scene, I think.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. They. And then. And it's a really great

Speaker:

moment, both of them.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I agree, as definitely, uh, the scene of the

Speaker:

episode for me.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, and then, um.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, I also. This whole time,

Speaker:

you know, Blair, we've talked about how Blair

Speaker:

is always dressing for power, and this

Speaker:

whole scene, I felt like she was muted. Her

Speaker:

outfit was muted. Her.

Speaker:

She was wearing, like, that blue. It was very

Speaker:

similar to what her mom was wearing. The pattern on. On. It

Speaker:

was similar to what her mom was wearing in black, but it

Speaker:

was very muted and very.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, the whole scene was actually very muted. The color

Speaker:

was very. Is definitely washed out. Like the color.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, very much. Yeah. It's like a white hallway,

Speaker:

and it was. It was like. It was red,

Speaker:

white, and black. You know, it was the

Speaker:

way.

Speaker:

>> Leif: The way you can really tell is Penn Badgley's

Speaker:

lips look like purple.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, yeah, because.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, it's definitely tinted.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, clearly.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Uh, so back at the poker game,

Speaker:

uh, Nate is clearly in over his head. Uh,

Speaker:

smooth brain. Nate finally realizes that Carter set

Speaker:

him up. Just when it seems Nate is about to

Speaker:

lose more than his wallet, Chuck steps in

Speaker:

to save the day.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And so for the

Speaker:

first time, Chuck, who. Whose

Speaker:

stock has been plummeting for three straight episodes,

Speaker:

three and a half straight episodes, because he was a.

Speaker:

He was a dick throughout most of this one. In the

Speaker:

first half of it, even when he was right, he was

Speaker:

right in a. About being a

Speaker:

dick, you know, like, he still

Speaker:

sucks throughout the entire thing, but then he comes

Speaker:

in, and, uh,

Speaker:

I. You know, we. We have to point out that he did this for

Speaker:

a bro. You know, we didn't see him

Speaker:

defend. Defend. Uh,

Speaker:

Blair, we don't know, you know, it. He

Speaker:

would. I don't know that he would stick his neck out for women,

Speaker:

but he stuck his neck out for his friend, and

Speaker:

he also was like, hey, you have my ball. You

Speaker:

have my watch. You keep it. I don't call the cops.

Speaker:

We're walking out of here. And, like,

Speaker:

he gave, like, again, that piece

Speaker:

of baseball memorabilia to just be like, you have it.

Speaker:

Keep it. Doesn't matter to me. Like, I'll

Speaker:

buy it back when. I'll buy it back when you put it on auction,

Speaker:

you know? Like, I'll get that ball back if I want it

Speaker:

badly enough. I'm Chuck bass.

Speaker:

And you actually see Chuck bass using his chuck

Speaker:

bassian powers for the forces of

Speaker:

friendship and not for evil

Speaker:

destruction in his own penis.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes.

Speaker:

Um, and so we get

Speaker:

back at the photo shoots. They are scrambling to

Speaker:

find Serena's replacement when Blair confronts her mother

Speaker:

about choosing Serena.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And,

Speaker:

you know, she. You know, she does come clean here, but

Speaker:

it's like.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And then she tries. They try. Did you catch. They try to give it

Speaker:

back to her. They tried to,

Speaker:

because they're scrambling to find.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, because Serena just quit. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yeah. And then she's

Speaker:

like, no, fuck off.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: What's good for her.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah. And, you know, it's.

Speaker:

It's sort of like that Nate moment from the week before that

Speaker:

she, like, stands up to her mom, like, no, I'm not doing

Speaker:

this. And, in fact, no one's

Speaker:

doing this because we're going to steal all the clothes and

Speaker:

do our own photo shoot around the city, which is also

Speaker:

great.

Speaker:

>> Leif: But at first, we actually see Dan, uh, finds

Speaker:

Serena and brings her a piece offering from craft services.

Speaker:

Uh, good throwback to earlier.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, they make plans for another date, and Blair

Speaker:

shows some lukewarm approval for Dan. Uh,

Speaker:

quaked upgrade from earlier in the episode, though.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah. She was a little bit nicer about

Speaker:

it. Yeah. Um, and,

Speaker:

you know, I'm sure that a lot of that is that carryover from the

Speaker:

earlier conversation that they had.

Speaker:

>> Leif: He can date Serena, but, you know, gotta, you

Speaker:

know, picture clothes up a little bit first.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah. What's

Speaker:

really funny is that, uh, when they stole the clothes and

Speaker:

ran around doing their own.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes. That's the next scene. Yeah,

Speaker:

yeah. Uh, so the next scene, which is the final scene of

Speaker:

the episode, is Blair and Serena steal Eleanor's

Speaker:

clothing and go off and have their own fashion shoot on

Speaker:

the streets of NYC.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. And the thing is, if they give those pictures to their mom,

Speaker:

like, in that. In that point in time, like, that kind of

Speaker:

shit, like, oh, seven, that

Speaker:

was Facebook was just starting

Speaker:

out putting that shit on, you know, social

Speaker:

media, putting those pictures out, that's

Speaker:

branding. Yeah. You know? Mhm. You know,

Speaker:

here's high fashion that you can wear every day. Look

Speaker:

at my daughter out having fun with her beautiful

Speaker:

friend.

Speaker:

>> Leif: You know, the only issue is

Speaker:

I felt like the dresses didn't really were not

Speaker:

fitted to them.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, yeah, yeah. They.

Speaker:

I.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Maybe. Maybe that's just my lack of fashion knowledge, but it seemed like they

Speaker:

were ill fitting to me.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, I don't think. Personally,

Speaker:

I. I don't think Eleanor Waldorf

Speaker:

is a really great designer. I don't know shit about

Speaker:

fashion. I don't know. I really don't. But,

Speaker:

like, I think Jenny is

Speaker:

their designer.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I'm like, what have we seen from Jennie

Speaker:

so far?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Haven't we? Uh, didn't we? Oh, I guess. No, I guess she bought that

Speaker:

dress.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Well, she didn't buy it. She said she's got a. She was looking at a dress in the

Speaker:

store, and she's got a copy at the fridge.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, yeah. Because it looks better in black for the kissing the lips

Speaker:

party. Yeah. So, yeah, her dress for the kisses and lips party

Speaker:

would have been.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes. I mean, she was just copying someone.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Else'S design, but, yeah, but still.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah, definitely. Impressive.

Speaker:

>> Steve: A better eye.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Steve: A better eye than Elinor Waldorf.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Yes. Uh, but that is the end of

Speaker:

our episode. Uh, so let's take a quick

Speaker:

break and then get into some segments.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, we are back for some

Speaker:

segments. Um, we're gonna do some

Speaker:

episode grades. Ah, I think you went

Speaker:

last, last week, so I will go first this

Speaker:

time. Um, I

Speaker:

am gonna go ahead and give this one

Speaker:

a b plus.

Speaker:

Um, just. We had the split

Speaker:

storylines, so that kind

Speaker:

of takes away. Um,

Speaker:

but you got. But you do have some good scenes, so,

Speaker:

you know, you got the great scene with Dan and Blair.

Speaker:

Um, so I'm definitely eager to see more of them.

Speaker:

I think they're two of the best actors on the show,

Speaker:

so I want to see more scenes with them.

Speaker:

Whether it's antagonistic or friendly,

Speaker:

I think it can be good. Um, so I think that

Speaker:

scene in itself brings it up a bit.

Speaker:

Uh, we get Blair's, uh, moment where she finally tells her

Speaker:

mom to fuck off. So that's good.

Speaker:

But, yeah, again, it's just dragged down by the fact

Speaker:

that Nate and Chuck are just completely separate

Speaker:

from everyone else, and Jenny is not used at

Speaker:

all. Really?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Jenny and Eric aren't in this episode. Yeah. Right. Like,

Speaker:

they're. They're not even mentioned.

Speaker:

They're not in it. We don't see them.

Speaker:

Um, and you feel that

Speaker:

I actually. I feel like I'm giving this episode

Speaker:

a generous b minus,

Speaker:

and because it was kind of a

Speaker:

c for me on my word first watch through.

Speaker:

But those moments with Dan and Blair

Speaker:

and that Mo and the Chuck bass

Speaker:

coming through, those things

Speaker:

kind of boosted it. Some of the other, like,

Speaker:

cinematic decision making and, like,

Speaker:

the directing and the acting kind of boosted it a little

Speaker:

bit storyline wise. It

Speaker:

fell flat for me. The.

Speaker:

The. We're going to have a competition on it at a

Speaker:

photo shoot, and we're going to have a big bro weekend.

Speaker:

Just. And it really didn't

Speaker:

leave a good place for Dan in the episode.

Speaker:

Yeah, it didn't leave much room for him. We

Speaker:

get a little bit of character development from.

Speaker:

From Rufus and Lily. We don't

Speaker:

see the captain at all. We don't see

Speaker:

Chuck's dad. I don't think. Um,

Speaker:

we know. Yeah. Uh, so

Speaker:

the only real parent dynamic, because

Speaker:

we don't even see Lily interact with Serena,

Speaker:

which, for the first time really starts

Speaker:

to reinforce that they don't have a relationship

Speaker:

because every other episode they've interacted, and

Speaker:

Serena has tried to say that we don't, but

Speaker:

now here we finally have them in their own

Speaker:

worlds, independent of each

Speaker:

other. Um, but, yeah, I

Speaker:

just. There were a lot of. There are

Speaker:

a lot. There was a lot of plot

Speaker:

line stuff that fell flat for me.

Speaker:

Um, that. So I'm

Speaker:

giving it a b minus.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right. Uh, so moving on to stock

Speaker:

watch. I, um.

Speaker:

So for stock up, I have,

Speaker:

um, unfortunately, Chuck,

Speaker:

um, he, uh, came through in the end for his bro.

Speaker:

Um, I think Serena and blair,

Speaker:

just for the end scene, they get stack up.

Speaker:

Um, but that's. I think it for me on

Speaker:

stock up. How about you? Anyone?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Um, so. So I felt like Dan and

Speaker:

Blair's stock went up with. With that. With that moment

Speaker:

in the end. Um, I feel like

Speaker:

Serena's was kind of breaking even. No. No real

Speaker:

movement. I also put Chuck in a

Speaker:

breaking even category this week

Speaker:

because. Or doing the right thing. He was still

Speaker:

being chuck. Um, so

Speaker:

I didn't actually have him going up, just breaking even.

Speaker:

But Dan and blair are both.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Dan. Blair up.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Dan and Blair both went up.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Okay.

Speaker:

>> Steve: I think everybody else kind of broke.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Even in that episode, so I

Speaker:

hate to say it. Chuck, my least favorite

Speaker:

character, goes up, and Dan, my

Speaker:

favorite character, goes down.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, you have Dan going down? Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: I mean, yeah, he has the good. The great scene with Blair,

Speaker:

but he was a dick to

Speaker:

Serena.

Speaker:

>> Steve: He really was. She did stand

Speaker:

him up, though.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Um, I mean, she. She did, but she

Speaker:

called him. I mean, things happen. I mean, the

Speaker:

stuff happens.

Speaker:

Um, I mean, it sucks,

Speaker:

but, I mean, that's. That's not what he was

Speaker:

addict to her about. I mean,

Speaker:

okay, if he wants to, you know, kind of be a dick and

Speaker:

blow her off after she stands him up, fine. But

Speaker:

he was a dick for something. He didn't really understand there

Speaker:

was his.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Place to be, and he didn't even.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Have the full story either.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, he didn't have the full story, and he didn't have any.

Speaker:

Any position

Speaker:

there. Like, uh, this isn't your. This isn't even your

Speaker:

fight.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And Nate stock goes down for.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Just.

Speaker:

>> Leif: For being a fucking idiot.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Oh, yeah. I forgot. Yeah, Nate

Speaker:

stock went down, and I think that's the first time for

Speaker:

me that Nate stock went down. But his.

Speaker:

His pure is inability.

Speaker:

And Nate's stock literally went down

Speaker:

because he loses ten. He loses

Speaker:

$200,000 because his trust

Speaker:

fund is drained. Uh, because, you

Speaker:

know, guess who you need.

Speaker:

>> Leif: So since you brought

Speaker:

that up, what do you think's going on there?

Speaker:

>> Steve: Well, I mean, for one, I think it's.

Speaker:

I think that the story he's going to say

Speaker:

is you're going to fall in

Speaker:

line or you don't get anything. But

Speaker:

knowing that he's a finance guy, that is

Speaker:

nerve. A nervous finance guy.

Speaker:

I feel like that money is being

Speaker:

invested in something that

Speaker:

is a surefire guarantee

Speaker:

that is really going to. Really going to. That's going

Speaker:

to be the one that gets their family,

Speaker:

like, on top.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Okay.

Speaker:

>> Steve: At least I think that's what the captain thinks he's doing.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, just to recap, so you have stock up,

Speaker:

Dan and Blair and anyone else?

Speaker:

>> Steve: No, just Dan and Blair.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Stock and down. Nate.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Nate. And if we're looking at parents,

Speaker:

Eleanor. I mean, Eleanor is.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

>> Leif: Actually, I'm going to add her to mine. Uh, she's definitely down.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, she's. She's

Speaker:

awful. Yeah, the two of them are both

Speaker:

down.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, um, so we're going into best

Speaker:

outfit, and I'm actually going to

Speaker:

go outside the box on this one. I

Speaker:

went with Laurel. Oh,

Speaker:

her outfit at the fashion shoes, she had, like, a

Speaker:

black dress, uh, with tight, uh,

Speaker:

at the waist with a black belt with, like, a big, nice big

Speaker:

brass. Ah, not a brass buckle, but black. It was, like, all

Speaker:

black. She had all black outfit and

Speaker:

including black glasses. Black rimmed

Speaker:

glasses. And her hair was, like, tied

Speaker:

back with a black, uh, like, headband or not a headband,

Speaker:

but it's like a tie.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah, like that. Um. Um,

Speaker:

for me, it was Katie's

Speaker:

outfit when they were in that

Speaker:

scene where, um, they were

Speaker:

all hanging out and she was teaching the pop and all

Speaker:

that. She was wearing, like, this gray. I don't even

Speaker:

know if it was pajamas or if it just looked like.

Speaker:

It looked like the border between, like, pajamas and,

Speaker:

like, regular clothes.

Speaker:

But it was just really caught my attention, especially because it

Speaker:

was, again, being used as.

Speaker:

As background, almost as. As set

Speaker:

dressing in the way that she was portrayed in

Speaker:

the scene.

Speaker:

>> Leif: And I'm not picturing it, but I'll definitely take

Speaker:

a look when I go back and snap it for, uh, Instagram. I

Speaker:

screenshot it.

Speaker:

>> Steve: Yeah. Yeah, I really loved it.

Speaker:

>> Leif: All right, um, so that is it for the

Speaker:

segments. Uh, we're going to go ahead and just get into some
