You didn't start this business for the revenue. You started it for freedom — to be there, to be present, to stop asking permission for your own life. So when was the last time you actually collected?
In this episode of QueenMode, Ana names the quiet swap that turns a business built for freedom into the most demanding boss you've ever had, dismantles the "it's just a season" story you've been using to justify it, and gives you the Tuesday test — the unglamorous exercise that will tell you more about your business than any consultant you could hire.
If this episode hit home, share it with a woman entrepreneur who needs to hear it.

I want to ask you a question and I want you to actually answer it.
Speaker:Out loud, in the car, wherever you are,
Speaker:nobody's listening, it's just us.
Speaker:Why did you start this business?
Speaker:Not the answer you give at networking events.
Speaker:Not the polished one, the real one.
Speaker:The one from the beginning, before any of this existed,
Speaker:when it was just an idea and a knot in your stomach and a terrifying amount of hope.
Speaker:I'll bet you money, it wasn't the revenue.
Speaker:I'll bet it was something like,
Speaker:I want to be there for my kids,
Speaker:for my life, for the school thing at two o'clock on a Tuesday that
Speaker:I would otherwise miss. I want to not have to ask permission for time off.
Speaker:I want to build something that's mine so that I'm free.
Speaker:Freedom. That was the deal.
Speaker:That was the whole entire deal you made with yourself the day you started.
Speaker:So here's my question, Queen. When was the last time you actually collected?
Speaker:What's up, Queen? I'm Dr. Anna Castilla,
Speaker:orthodontist, author, speaker,
Speaker:unapologetic, dream chaser, and yes,
Speaker:I took my business from flatlining to an eight figure exit in just eight years.
Speaker:But spoiler alert, I didn't get there by playing a safe.
Speaker:I broke rules, I made bold moves,
Speaker:and I became the woman my younger self was waiting for.
Speaker:Queen Mode is your weekly dose of fierce strategy,
Speaker:unfiltered truth, and mindset shifts that will have you leading,
Speaker:growing, and living like the powerhouse you are without burning out or selling out.
Speaker:So if you're done playing small and ready to rise,
Speaker:welcome home.
Speaker:Let's go back to the beginning because I think you've forgotten what
Speaker:you actually signed up for. Not the business plan,
Speaker:the deal.
Speaker:The deal was I will take on more risk than a job.
Speaker:I will take on more stress than a job.
Speaker:I will work harder than any employee in this building will ever work.
Speaker:I will lie awake at night in a way that salaried people don't.
Speaker:And in exchange I get my life back.
Speaker:That was the trade. That was the exchange rate.
Speaker:You gave up security and you bought freedom.
Speaker:The freedom to decide, to be present,
Speaker:To shape your days around your actual life instead of shaping your life around
Speaker:somebody else's schedule. Now,
Speaker:I want you to do something that's going to be a little bit unpleasant.
Speaker:Stay with me anyway.
Speaker:Open your calendar, look at last week.
Speaker:Where's the freedom? Show me,
Speaker:point to it. Point to the Tuesday afternoon you took because you wanted to.
Speaker:Point to the school thing you went to without checking your phone 11 times.
Speaker:Point to the vacation where you actually left,
Speaker:where you didn't just peek at the schedule from a beach chair at 9:40
Speaker:at night and then lie there furious for an hour.
Speaker:Point to the thing you built this whole business to buy.
Speaker:And if you can't
Speaker:If you're scrolling back through the weeks looking for it and it isn't there,
Speaker:I need you to understand what that means because it's not a small thing.
Speaker:You are paying the price of ownership and receiving none of the benefit.
Speaker:You took on all the risk. You took on all the stress.
Speaker:You carry the payroll, the liability,
Speaker:the weight of every single person who depends on this thing.
Speaker:You have paid in full every month for years,
Speaker:and you never collect.
Speaker:That is not a business queen. That's a job with worse hours and a lot more anxiety,
Speaker:and you're the one who hired you.
Speaker:And I say that with so much love,
Speaker:but I'm going to say it because nobody else in your life is going to.
Speaker:~
Speaker:It happens quietly. That's the whole trick of it.
Speaker:Nobody ever sits you down and asks you to sign a contract giving up your life.
Speaker:There's no moment. There's no villain.
Speaker:If somebody had handed you a piece of paper in year one and said,
Speaker:by signing below, you agree to work every weekend for the next decade,
Speaker:miss the things that matter, and be mentally absent from your own dinner table,
Speaker:you would have laughed in their face.
Speaker:You'd have thrown them out of the building.
Speaker:You never signed that. You
Speaker:You just said yes 700 times. Yes,
Speaker:I'll cover it. Yes, I'll come in early.
Speaker:Yes, I'll handle it. Yes, I'll take the call.
Speaker:Yes, I'll just do it myself. It's faster.
Speaker:Yes, I'll take a look tonight after the kids go down.
Speaker:Yes, I'll fix it this weekend.
Speaker:Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes. every single yes was reasonable.
Speaker:Every single one taken alone was nothing.
Speaker:Twenty minutes here, a phone call there,
Speaker:a Saturday morning that was going to be boring anyway.
Speaker:But that's how you sell a life.
Speaker:Not in one transaction, in a thousand tiny ones,
Speaker:none of which felt like a big deal at the time.
Speaker:You don't lose your freedom. You spend it.
Speaker:In coins so small you never notice the wallet is empty.
Speaker:And you can feel this, right? You can feel that the ratio has quietly inverted.
Speaker:The business was supposed to serve your life.
Speaker:Now your life serves the business.
Speaker:When did that flip? What day was it?
Speaker:You couldn't tell me because there wasn't a day.
Speaker:There was a decade. Here's the tell,
Speaker:and I want you to check yourself against it honestly.
Speaker:Somebody asked you to take a day off,
Speaker:a real one. And your very first thought,
Speaker:before excitement, before relief,
Speaker:before
Speaker:anything human is who's going to handle everything that's the flip right there
Speaker:that's the sound of it because the honest answer in a business by accident
Speaker:is nobody nobody's going to handle it
Speaker:It's going to sit there and rot and pile up and be waiting for you when
Speaker:you get back. So the day off isn't actually a day off at all.
Speaker:It's a loan. You borrow the day and you pay it back with interest on Monday
Speaker:and you spend the entire day itself knowing the bill is coming.
Speaker:That's not rest, that's just guilt in a nicer location.
Speaker:Now let's talk about the part nobody wants to say out loud,
Speaker:and I'm going to say it anyway because it's the truest thing in this episode.
Speaker:This is costing your body, not metaphorically,
Speaker:physically, in your actual one irreplaceable body.
Speaker:You know the feeling, that low,
Speaker:constant hum underneath everything.
Speaker:It's not panic exactly, it's more like a channel that never turns off,
Speaker:murmuring.
Speaker:Did that get handled? Did she call back?
Speaker:Is anyone gonna tell me if I didn't?
Speaker:It's on during dinner, it's on in the shower,
Speaker:it's on at 3 a.m., which is why you're awake at 3 a.m.
Speaker:And then there's the other one.
Speaker:The one that hits you in the chest out of nowhere in the middle
Speaker:of something pleasant. That jolt.
Speaker:god, did anyone follow up on that?
Speaker:And your whole body dumps adrenaline into your bloodstream in the middle
Speaker:of your daughter's recital. That is a stress response.
Speaker:That is your nervous system running an emergency drill on a Tuesday at a recital.
Speaker:And you've normalized it. That's the horror.
Speaker:You've been living in it so long that you think that's just what it feels like
Speaker:to be you. You think that hum is your personality.
Speaker:It's not. It's an injury. But here's the one I really want to sit with because it's
Speaker:the one that breaks my heart.
Speaker:You're not there. You're in the room.
Speaker:Your body's in the room at the dinner,
Speaker:at the game, on the couch, at the birthday party.
Speaker:Everybody can see you. There are photographs of you being there.
Speaker:But your mind is back at the office.
Speaker:Your mind is running the schedule,
Speaker:replaying the conversation.
Speaker:conversation with the team member wondering if the thing got ordered
Speaker:and the people you love the ones you built this whole thing for they
Speaker:can tell they always can kids especially they know exactly when you're really with
Speaker:them and when you're just physically nearby they don't have the words
Speaker:for it but they know they feel the difference between a mother who is present
Speaker:and a mother who is present adjacent and here's the thing that should stop you cold
Speaker:This is the exact thing you built the business to be able to give them.
Speaker:You wanted to be there. You built a whole company so you could be there.
Speaker:You took on the risk and the debt and the sleepless nights so you could be there.
Speaker:And now you're there physically,
Speaker:technically, on paper, and you're not actually there at all.
Speaker:That's the swap. That's what got treated.
Speaker:One small yes at a time. Not your calendar,
Speaker:your presence, the thing you actually wanted.
Speaker:The only thing that was ever.
Speaker:really on the table.
Speaker:Okay. Deep breath because now I have to take away the story you've been using
Speaker:to justify all of this and you're not going to like it.
Speaker:The story goes like this. I know I know it's a lot right now.
Speaker:But this is just a season after the next hire,
Speaker:after we get through this quarter,
Speaker:after the new location opens, after things settle down,
Speaker:then I'll take the time, then I'll rest,
Speaker:then I'll be present. Queen, there is no then.
Speaker:I need you to hear me. I have been where you are,
Speaker:and I have been on the other side of an exit.
Speaker:And I am telling you with my whole chest.
Speaker:That day does not arrive on its own.
Speaker:Not after the hire, not after the quarter,
Speaker:not after the launch, the location,
Speaker:the milestone, the number. You know how I know?
Speaker:Because you've hit milestones already.
Speaker:You have. You've hit numbers that would have made the woman
Speaker:who started this business weep with joy.
Speaker:Revenue she couldn't have imagined.
Speaker:did you rest? Did the hum stop?
Speaker:Did you take the Tuesday? No, because you moved the finish line.
Speaker:You always move the finish line.
Speaker:That is literally what makes you a high achiever.
Speaker:That is the engine that built all of this,
Speaker:and they will run you into the ground forever if nobody interrupts it.
Speaker:There is no number that satisfies a woman who moves the finish line.
Speaker:There is no amount.
Speaker:And I did this in the early years of my business when my practice was very small.
Speaker:I was at an orthodontics conference called MKS.
Speaker:At that conference, I watched an orthodontist give a presentation about
Speaker:how he runs his office so he can start 1,000 new patients
Speaker:a year working three days a week.
Speaker:My mind was blown.
Speaker:I was inspired, and I leaned over to my husband who was there with
Speaker:me and whispered to him: Within five years,
Speaker:I'm going to start a thousand new patients in a year working three days a week.
Speaker:Long story short, I did it. And I did it in three years,
Speaker:not five. and if you are an orthodontics queen,
Speaker:this may sound impressive, and it is,
Speaker:but that's not the point here.
Speaker:The point is not how awesome I was or how hard I worked.
Speaker:The point here is that I worked so hard for that goal,
Speaker:I almost lost myself and the whole time I told myself,
Speaker:when I get there, I will rest.
Speaker:But I never did. The goal just grew bigger from there.
Speaker:And there's nothing wrong with bigger goals.
Speaker:The only thing better than a big dream is a bigger dream.
Speaker:The problem is how I created that dream.
Speaker:So let me give you the reframe because this is the one that changed everything
Speaker:for me. Rest is not the reward you get at the end of the build.
Speaker:Rest is the evidence the build is working.
Speaker:Read that again. Sit in it.
Speaker:Because if your business cannot survive you taking a Tuesday afternoon,
Speaker:if the whole thing wobbles the second you look away,
Speaker:that's not a sign that you're indispensable and important and doing a great job.
Speaker:That's a diagnostic reading. That's the machine telling you it isn't finished.
Speaker:And this is where the wellness conversation and the business conversation stop being
Speaker:two conversations. Because everybody wants to talk about founder burnout like it's
Speaker:a self-care problem. Like you need better boundaries and a meditation app
Speaker:and a nice bath. Like if you just rest more,
Speaker:you'd feel better. That's insulting.
Speaker:And it doesn't work. And you know it doesn't work because you've tried it.
Speaker:You took the long weekend and you came back and within four hours the
Speaker:hum was right back where it was because
Speaker:Nothing about the structure changed.
Speaker:You didn't fix anything. You just stepped back from it briefly and then walked back
Speaker:into the exact same machine. You cannot self-carry your way out of
Speaker:a badly designed business. Your exhaustion is not a wellness problem.
Speaker:It's a design problem wearing a wellness costume.
Speaker:And the fix isn't more bubble bats,
Speaker:queen. The fix is a business that doesn't need you for everything.
Speaker:Rest isn't what you do when the work is done.
Speaker:Rest is the proof that the work was built right.
Speaker:Okay, before I give you the exercise,
Speaker:I have to deal with the objection because I can hear it forming,
Speaker:and if I don't take it apart right now,
Speaker:you will use it to walk out of this episode unchanged.
Speaker:The objection goes Anna, that's lovely,
Speaker:but my business is different. My clients want me.
Speaker:They're not paying for my team,
Speaker:they're paying for me. That's literally the product.
Speaker:And you're gonna say this with total confidence because you're an expert,
Speaker:a practitioner, a licensed, credentialed,
Speaker:hard won somebody. The whole business is built on your name and your hands
Speaker:and your judgment. So let's be honest about what's true in that,
Speaker:and then let's be honest about what's a story.
Speaker:What's true? Yes, there is a core of what you do that only you can do.
Speaker:If you're the surgeon, you're the surgeon.
Speaker:If you're the one they came
Speaker:For you're the one they came for.
Speaker:I'm not going to insult you by pretending otherwise.
Speaker:And any coach who tells you just delegate everything has never actually
Speaker:run a practice and you should stop listening to them immediately.
Speaker:But what's a story? The story is that this core
Speaker:is the reason you can't take a Tuesday afternoon.
Speaker:Because let's actually look at your week,
Speaker:not the methodology of your week,
Speaker:the week. How much of last week was you doing the irreplaceable thing,
Speaker:like the surgery? The thing that genuinely requires your license,
Speaker:your face, your decade of expertise,
Speaker:your name on the door,
Speaker:And how much of it was the schedule,
Speaker:the vendor, the payroll question,
Speaker:the team member who was upset with the other team member,
Speaker:the software that stopped working,
Speaker:the supply order, the thing that broke,
Speaker:the quick question that was neither quick nor a question,
Speaker:the form, the follow-up, the thing you fixed on Saturday because it
Speaker:was faster than explaining it.
Speaker:Be honest, add it up. For most of you,
Speaker:the irreplaceable core is a fraction of the week,
Speaker:a small one. And it's
Speaker:Surrounded, buried, drowned in an enormous mass of work that
Speaker:has absolutely nothing to do with your genius and everything to do with
Speaker:the fact that you're the one who's always done it.
Speaker:That's not my clients want me.
Speaker:That's my business has never been designed around what only I can do.
Speaker:And here's the twist that should actually make you angry because it made me angry.
Speaker:All that other work is degrading the thing your clients came for.
Speaker:They came for you. And what they're getting is a woman who is distracted,
Speaker:depleted, and running a background track on the front desk while she's
Speaker:in the room with them. She's physically present.
Speaker:And mentally somewhere else. They can feel it.
Speaker:They always can. So the irony is complete.
Speaker:You are protecting your you can't replace me work by burying it under
Speaker:700 things that anyone could do.
Speaker:And the burial is making the irreplaceable work worse.
Speaker:You are not protecting the thing they came for.
Speaker:You are diluting it every single day and calling that dedication.
Speaker:Which brings me to the second half of the objection,
Speaker:the one you don't say out loud.
Speaker:Somewhere in there is a quieter fear.
Speaker:And it goes like this: If the business can run without me,
Speaker:then what am I?
Speaker:I want you to hear that thought clearly because it runs a lot of women's lives from
Speaker:the basement. Being needed feels like being valuable.
Speaker:Being the one who holds it all together feels like being important.
Speaker:Being the safety net feels like love for your team,
Speaker:for your clients, for the whole thing you built.
Speaker:And so underneath all the exhaustion and all the complaining,
Speaker:there is a small part of you that does not actually want the business to
Speaker:be able to survive without you.
Speaker:Because if it can survive without you,
Speaker:what was all this for? Who are you if you're not the one carrying it?
Speaker:Queen, listen to me.
Speaker:A woman who cannot be removed from any task in her business is not valuable.
Speaker:She's a single point of failure.
Speaker:That's not a compliment. That is the phrase engineers use for the thing most likely
Speaker:to bring the whole system down.
Speaker:And the answer to who am I if I'm not the one doing everything is the best news
Speaker:in this entire episode. You're the one who built something that outlasts you.
Speaker:Your presence in the room. That's not a smaller identity.
Speaker:That is a vastly bigger one. That is the difference between a woman with
Speaker:a very demanding job and a woman with an enterprise.
Speaker:So let's make this real because I don't want you to feel this and do nothing.
Speaker:Feeling it and doing nothing is worse than not hearing it at all.
Speaker:Here's the exercise: it's unglamorous and it's a little scary,
Speaker:and it will tell you more about your business than any consultant you could hire.
Speaker:Schedule a Tuesday afternoon off.
Speaker:Make yourself unavailable and watch what breaks.
Speaker:That's it. Don't announce it. Don't prepare the team.
Speaker:Don't spend three weeks getting everything perfect first because that's just
Speaker:you doing the work in advance.
Speaker:And I see you and absolutely not.
Speaker:Just go, leave at noon, turn the phone face down.
Speaker:Go do something that has nothing to do with this business.
Speaker:walk, sit somewhere beautiful,
Speaker:go to the thing you always miss,
Speaker:and then at the end of the day come back and look not at your feelings,
Speaker:at the evidence. What broke?
Speaker:What decision waited for you that should not have needed you?
Speaker:Who called and what did they call about?
Speaker:What piled up? What sat there?
Speaker:Which fire burned because you weren't standing next to the extinguisher.
Speaker:And Queen, here's the whole point so you don't miss it.
Speaker:Whatever broke is not your indictment.
Speaker:It's your roadmap. That's the reframe.
Speaker:The list of things that fell apart while you were gone is not a report
Speaker:cut on your leadership. It's not evidence that you can't ever leave.
Speaker:It is the single most valuable strategic document you will produce this year because
Speaker:it is a map, a precise, honest,
Speaker:brutally specific map of exactly where your business is still dependent
Speaker:on your body being in the building.
Speaker:And now you can fix it. Not all of it.
Speaker:One
Speaker:thing. Pick the biggest thing that broke and design it so it can't break that
Speaker:way again. A person, a decision rule,
Speaker:an actual owner who isn't you,
Speaker:and then take another Tuesday and another.
Speaker:And what you'll find, and this is the beautiful part,
Speaker:this is the part I want you to hold on to.
Speaker:Is that as the list of things that break gets shorter,
Speaker:two things happen at exactly the same time?
Speaker:Your business gets stronger and you get your life back.
Speaker:They're not intention. That's the lie you've been sold,
Speaker:that you have to choose between a thriving business and a life.
Speaker:That presence is something you pay for with performance.
Speaker:It's the same project. A business that can run without you is simultaneously
Speaker:a more valuable business.
Speaker:and a freer woman. There is no trade off.
Speaker:There never was. I know this because I sold mine,
Speaker:and nobody, not one buyer, not one,
Speaker:asked me how many hours I personally worked.
Speaker:They asked whether it could run without me.
Speaker:That was the whole valuation. That was the entire question.
Speaker:Your freedom and your enterprise value are the same,
Speaker:Queen. They always were.
Speaker:So let me bring this home. You did not build this for the revenue.
Speaker:You built it for the freedom to be there,
Speaker:to be present, to not have to ask permission for your own life.
Speaker:That was the deal. That was always the deal.
Speaker:And somewhere in the last decade,
Speaker:in a thousand tiny reasonable yeses,
Speaker:you quietly stopped collecting on it and you started calling that dedication.
Speaker:It isn't dedication. It's a design flaw and it's fixable.
Speaker:So hear this and let it actually land.
Speaker:Rest is not the reward.
Speaker:At the end of the build. It's the evidence the build is working.
Speaker:A business that cannot survive your Tuesday afternoon is not finished,
Speaker:no matter what the revenue says,
Speaker:no matter how impressive the number is,
Speaker:no matter how many people tell you how well you're doing.
Speaker:protect the Crown Queen, and I mean that literally.
Speaker:Protect the woman wearing it.
Speaker:Because there is exactly one asset in that entire business that cannot be replaced,
Speaker:insured, or rehired, and it is not the client list,
Speaker:and it is not the location, and it is not the brand.
Speaker:It's you, your health, your mind,
Speaker:your presence at your own dinner table.
Speaker:The business was always supposed to be the vehicle.
Speaker:It was never supposed to be the destination.
Speaker:And the queen who cannot leave the throne room isn't reigning.
Speaker:She's guarding it. So put it down,
Speaker:take the Tuesday, look at what breaks,
Speaker:and then go build a kingdom that can hold itself together while its queen goes
Speaker:and lives the life she built it for.
Speaker:That's not weakness. That's not you slacking off.
Speaker:That's not you abandoning your team.
Speaker:That's the whole point.
Speaker:That was always the whole point.
Speaker:Go collect what you're owed.
Speaker:Thanks for tuning in, Queen. I hope today's episode gave you the clarity,
Speaker:courage, or conviction you needed to stop building your business
Speaker:by accident and start leading it by design.
