Shownotes

You become an old tree. Not to feel strong, but to notice the roots were already down there doing the work.

About 10 minutes, ending on the singing bowl.

There is a short poem in this one. Roots do not rush to reach the dark, they trust the slow unfurling. What is solid need not shout. The tree does not work at standing up, it simply is, and your resilience is the same. A tree does not grab hold of a leaf on the way past.

Transcripts

Steven Webb:

Good morning. This is morning stillness for a peaceful, resilient day.

Steven Webb:

So we'll just begin by simply arriving here, exactly as you are.

Steven Webb:

And we do this by allowing our breath to flow naturally.

Steven Webb:

Breathing in calm.

Steven Webb:

Breathing out relaxed.

Steven Webb:

There's no need to do anything with your breath.

Steven Webb:

There's no need to force it.

Steven Webb:

Your body knows how to breathe,

Steven Webb:

just as it knows how to relax. relax

Steven Webb:

So let's just invite the body to soften.

Steven Webb:

Starting at the crown of your head.

Steven Webb:

And gently inviting the muscles of your face to release.

Steven Webb:

Your jaw,

Steven Webb:

Your shoulders and your arms.

Steven Webb:

All the way down to your toes.

Steven Webb:

And we'll trust that the body remembers how to let go.

Steven Webb:

And you're simply giving it permission. Breathing

Steven Webb:

in calm. Breathing out relax

Steven Webb:

being calm Breathing out relax.

Steven Webb:

And just notice how the mind goes quiet when we just allow the body to relax.

Steven Webb:

We allow the breath to be what it is and we allow the moment to be what it is.

Steven Webb:

One of the real good arts of meditation is allowing the moment to be what it is.

Steven Webb:

Really underneath everything we're already meditating.

Steven Webb:

So now I just want you to imagine you're sitting or standing in a place that feels deeply peaceful to

Steven Webb:

you.

Steven Webb:

Perhaps it's a forest, a

Steven Webb:

meadow or a quiet garden.

Steven Webb:

And you can sense the earth beneath you.

Steven Webb:

It's solid and it's supportive.

Steven Webb:

And as you settle here, begin to visualize your body as strong, ancient tree.

Steven Webb:

Your spine is the trunk.

Steven Webb:

It's steady and dignified.

Steven Webb:

Your arms and your fingers stretch like the branches toward the sky.

Steven Webb:

And beneath you, from the base of your spine, the roots begin to grow.

Steven Webb:

And these roots extend deep into the earth.

Steven Webb:

Through all the layers of the soil or sand and through the stone. Just anchoring you

Steven Webb:

into the quiet strength of the ground below you.

Steven Webb:

And just while you're still settling in and

Steven Webb:

becoming the symbol of an ancient tree

Steven Webb:

it's a wonderful poem.

Steven Webb:

Roots don't rush to reach the dark. They

Steven Webb:

trust the slow unfurling.

Steven Webb:

What is solid need not shout.

Steven Webb:

The deepest ground is holding.

Steven Webb:

And notice, just like the tree, the tree doesn't have to stand tall and doesn't have to work at it.

Steven Webb:

It just is.

Steven Webb:

And just like your wisdom and your resilience, it's already there. You already have it. You

Steven Webb:

just have to allow it to be. You have to trust it.

Steven Webb:

And just like the tree, with every breath in, draw up that nourishment from the earth. The

Steven Webb:

stability. The resilience. The

Steven Webb:

quiet wisdom of a thousand seasons.

Steven Webb:

With every breath out, release anything that feels shaky or uncertain. Just

Steven Webb:

allowing it to let go.

Steven Webb:

A tree doesn't grab hold of a loose leaf.

Steven Webb:

Nor does it grab a loose branch.

Steven Webb:

It just allows it to do what it does.

Steven Webb:

And let the earth absorb it, transforming it into strength. Just

Steven Webb:

like the tree with every change of a season. Just

Steven Webb:

like every breath with every change of the body still

Steven Webb:

allow it to be what it is.

Steven Webb:

You are held just like the trees are held. Not by force, but by surrender. To the

Steven Webb:

support that's always here.

Steven Webb:

And you, just like the trees, hold all this wisdom and knowledge and resilience

Steven Webb:

over a millennia of generations past, all deep within inside of you.

Steven Webb:

If only we slow down and recognise that. And

Steven Webb:

if we just feel it deeply

Steven Webb:

And allow the body to do what it does.

Steven Webb:

And as we slowly come back to bring the awareness back to our bodies. To the sensation of the earth

Steven Webb:

beneath you. To the rhythm of your breath.

Steven Webb:

Know that this rootedness is always available to you. This steady refuge like an ancient

Steven Webb:

tree. Whenever

Steven Webb:

you're feeling a bit unstable or whenever you're wavering, just remember you have so many years of

Steven Webb:

experience, so many generations of experience, and it's all there deep within if we only trust.

Steven Webb:

So in a moment I'm going to tap the bowl. And just bring your awareness back to the room.

Steven Webb:

Gently open your eyes, shake out your arms, wiggle your fingers and toes. And just take a deep breath in

Steven Webb:

and... Recognise that you do have all this wisdom and you do have all this resilience. But sometimes life

Steven Webb:

gets on top of us. Sometimes the noise of thinking and planning and worrying and the stress of life,

Steven Webb:

sometimes that just covers everything up and makes a bit of a mess of everything. So if we just take

Steven Webb:

a step back and just be like that tree in the middle of a field. Ah, I've got this. Thank

Steven Webb:

you. I'm Steven and thank you for supporting this podcast and keeping it free for everybody. You can always have
