CULTIVATING AN ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE (12/11/23)

CULTIVATE to prepare land for crops or gardening ,,,that is to plough , dig turn, hoe , or fertilize the soil/ground…in other venues= to develop, foster, or pursue


HOSEA 10: 12 Sow (scatter seed) to yourselves in righteousness (justice) reap (harvest) in mercy(loving kindness & steadfastness) …Break up (to till, furrow, or  newly, freshly plough) your fallow ground (untilled, tillable soil/ground) 


ATTITUDE….this ‘word’ is not specifically found in the Bible …The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines this as follows…a)posture b) a mental position(disposition) c) an emotion toward an act or state d) a readiness to respond e) ‘today’ we may say he/ she has ‘attitude’ meaning they are negative or defiant about something/someone


**NASB20 & AMP….DO USE ATTITUDE in this Verse… 

Col. 4:2 Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;...also PHIL. 2:5 Have this attitude in yourselves which was also in Christ Jesus,( most other translations say have this mind)

When speaking of what this word means the Bible speaks of

good will…whole- heartedly..or mind set

Hebrews 12:28 28 Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us ]show gratitude{NASB20}, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe;....

GREEK>>GRACE {CHARIS}...(The Word KJV uses in He.12:28)

that which affords joy, pleasure, delight, sweetness, charm, loveliness: grace of speech

  1. good will, loving-kindness, favour
  2. of the merciful kindness by which God, exerting his holy influence upon souls, turns them to Christ, keeps, strengthens, increases them in Christian faith, knowledge, affection, and kindles them to the exercise of the Christian virtues
  3. FROM ROOT –CHAIRO…abstract or concrete; literal, figurative or spiritual; especially the divine influence upon the heart, and its reflection in the life; including gratitude):—acceptable, benefit, favour, gift, grace(- ious), joy, liberality, pleasure, thank(-s, -worthy). 

The Family or Tribe of ‘GRATITUDE”:-)

There  is a ‘family/tribe’ including… Blessing, Thankfulness(Thanksgiving), Rejoicing, Praise, Honor(Reverence),Joy…..also all aspects for Worship/Adoration really

PART II 12/11/23………”The “Family” of Gratitude” ( Words & Passages that define Gratitude)

BLESSING…( 120x in scripture, 59 God Blesses us, 35 We BLESS HIM , 26 Man Blesses Man)...BARAK = to bend the knee showing extravagant love & adoration to a superior being

Psalm 103:1,2 … Bless the Lord, O my soul;

And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul,

And forget not all His benefits:

PSALM 103:20-22 

Bless the Lord, you His angels,

Who excel in strength, who do His word,

Heeding the voice of His word.

21 Bless the Lord, all you His hosts,

You [c]ministers of His, who do His pleasure.

Psalm 100:4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,(confession, praise)

And into His courts with praise.

Be* thankful to Him, and bless His name.(Give thanks, Confess thanks)

Col. 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.(Grateful, mindful of favors)

Psalm 95:2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.

PHIL 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.{yoo-khar-is-tee'-ah= Thankfulness, giving of thanks} 


Rejoice(192 in 183,,55 in Psalms ), Rejoicing

Psalm 97:12 *Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness.

Psalm 105:3 Glory ye in his holy name: *let the heart of them rejoice that seek the LORD.

  • * The Hebrew word used predominantly in the O.T. = SA-MAK or Say–MAYak..from the root meaning ‘To make oneself GLAD’...Gladden the HEART, brighten up…also to make merry , be glad, be joyful or cheerful …hence rejoice


Phil 3:1 Finally, my brothers,** rejoice in the Lord. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.

Phil. 4:4 ** Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice.

I Peter 4:13 But **rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed.

** The GREEK word predominantly used in the N.T.  = Chario  to be glad, to be well, to THRIVE, to give a joyful & encouraging greeting,can be either a calm well being of disposition, Or an EXCEEDING display of JOY…hence Rejoice


PRAISE, PRAISING (in reference to God used 257 x in 216 verses)

There are 7 Main HEBREW words that show different facets of what ‘Praise’ means…these words are mainly in ‘Psalms’, 185xin 209vs.)

Yadah (48x) means“the extended hand, to throw out the hand, therefore to worship with extended hand, to lift the hands.” ( Strong’s #H3034)...Psalm 107:15 Oh that men would praise (yadah) the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men.

Towdah(5x) literally means, “an extension of the hand in adoration, avowal (an open statement of affirmation; frank acknowledgment or admission.), or acceptance.” (Strong’s #H8426)...“Enter into His gates with thanksgiving (Towdah), And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to Him, and bless His name (Psalm 100:4). Towdah is a praise-filled confession that God’s word is infallible and working in your circumstances.”~Inglis

Shâbach, shaw-bakh’;(10x) a primitive root; properly, to address in a loud tone, i.e. (specifically) loud; figuratively, to pacify (as if by words):—commend, glory, keep in, praise, still, triumph…SHOUT PRAISE! …Psalm 145:4 – One generation shall praise (shabach) Thy works to another and declare Thy mighty acts.(Strongs H7263)

bârak, baw-rak’;(3x) a primitive root; to kneel; by implication to bless God (as an act of adoration), and (vice-versa) man (as a benefit); also (by euphemism) to curse (God or the king, as treason):..Psalm 34:1 – I will bless (barak) the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.(Strongs H1288)

zâmar, zaw-mar(27x)’; a primitive root (perhaps identical with H2168 through the idea of striking with the fingers); properly, to touch the strings or parts of a musical instrument, i.e. play upon it; to make music, accompanied by the voice; hence to celebrate in song and music:—give praise, sing forth praises, psalms…Psalm 21:13 – Be exalted O Lord, in Thine own strength, so will we sing and praise (zamar) Thy power.

tᵉhillâh, teh-hil-law’;(57x) from H1984; laudation; specifically (concretely) a hymn:—praise.(Strongs H8416)...Isaiah 61:3 – To grant to those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise (tehillah) instead of the spirit of fainting, So they shall be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.

NEW TESTAMENT USE:

Luke 18:43 And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him, glorifying God. And all the people, when they saw it, gave praise(ainos…praise,adoration, a story narrated) to God.

Hebrews 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise( I–ni–sis..to speak praise, shout praise ALWAYS in reference to God , to recommend, to Vow…from ainos)) to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.

John 12:43 For they loved the *praise of men more than the *praise of God.( I Peter 4:11 speak as oracles of GOD..That HE might be glorified & DOXAED

  • Doxa = opinion, estimate, whether good or bad concerning someone

  • in the NT always a good opinion concerning one, resulting in praise, honour, and glory

  • splendour, brightness

  • of the moon, sun, stars

  • magnificence, excellence, preeminence, dignity, grace

  • Majesty..An exalted state..commanding respect..a thing belonging to God

Epainos (Ep-pie -nos)= a commendation..Eph. 1:12 that we should be to the EPAINOS of HIs (God’s) Glory(Eph. 1:6 & 1:14)

Abba wants to Point to you in pride  & say “Look at my son or daughter”:-)


ROMANS 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise (ePainos) is not of men, but of God.

I Cr. 14:5 At the judgment all men shall have Epainos of God

Phil. 1:11 Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
