“Podcasting is where curiosity goes” - Leila Ainge
Welcome back to JMTBP, where in this episode we’re asking: what can we learn about podcasting from the world of psychology? What is it that makes audio just so flippin’ delicious?
Leila Ainge brings a heck of a lot to the table, including her podcast ‘Psychologically Speaking,’ first launched as a way of disseminating her masters research on Imposter Phenomenon. Leila’s podcast has since evolved and she’s published episodes on a range of topics, some featuring guests, some solo, often of varying length and format but always fascinating! Leila’s brilliant brain makes connections between unexpected things so don't be surprised if you finish this episode with a bunch of new ideas that suddenly seem very important that you get to work on immediately…
Leila encourages us to view our podcasts as an ‘invitation’ to our audience - a space to allow their own ideas to evolve alongside the conversations we’re sharing with them. This episode really gives you permission to step away from the rule book, and a reminder that a podcast does not require you to churn out 30 minute polished to perfection sales pitches week after week. That you can just be curious, have interesting conversations, share the things you're learning, change your mind, experiment and.. err.. bloody well enjoy yourself?
In this episode you’ll hear:
- How Leila’s podcast has evolved into a hub for psychological insights and whatever is peaking her curiosity at the time
- Leila’s expertise (and own experiences with) imposter phenomenon
- Why podcasting might actually be one of the gentler ways to practise being visible
- The difference between selling what you do and showing people who you are
- What Leila has learnt from listening back to old episodes
- Why your podcast does NOT have to be the same length, format or level of polished every single week (lucky for us!)
- The reality of consistency when you're running a business without an enormous team behind you
- Why your download numbers don't always tell you whether something was valuable
- Knowing when a guest simply isn't right for your podcast — and why it's okay not to publish everything you record
- Why podcasts will become even MORE important in a world increasingly full of AI-generated guff.
- Why we connect with podcasts and audio on such a deep level
- How to psychologically prepare for recording your podcast
- The one podcast Leila would save in an apod-calypse… and more on her fave podcasts and why
- A 10 out of 10 irrelevant architecture podcast pitch from a man called Romeo
Enjoy!
