It's the expectation and an essential part of how restaurant workers earn a living. A guest's tip subsidizes wages for most of restaurant or service workers. It's a reality that only exists in North America the United States and Canada.

Refusing to tip is embarrassing: it makes you lose face in front of the waiter and your colleagues. Tipping is a strong social norm and violating it is extremely rude. You show so little class and lack of any culture when a person in the service industry 'bends over backwards' to make your experience enjoyable and you dont show your appreciation with a tip.

Yes if the service was bad then I agree no tips. If it was good then show it.
