License plate readers can help police find stolen cars, missing people, and vehicles connected to serious crimes. That sounds like technology doing exactly what we hope it will do. But when the same system can also reveal where someone’s car has been, the question quickly shifts from what these cameras can see to who gets to search that information and why.

It’s an interesting tension because being seen isn’t always the same as being known. In Genesis, Hagar calls God “the God who sees me,” and for her, being seen brought comfort because God knew her story, not just her location. As technology gets better at tracking where we are, are we getting any better at actually knowing the people around us?

Scripture (NIV): Genesis 16:13 – “You are the God who sees me.”
