Shownotes

In this episode Roger shares how each peak and valley strengthened his faith and helped him see how God works all things together for good. His book, a heartfelt compilation of stories and prose, encourages readers to embrace God’s divine plan and find purpose in every circumstance.

Raised in a small farm and ranch community in western Oklahoma, Roger grew up in a close-knit church environment that shaped his early faith — but also limited his understanding of God’s true character. His hunger for truth led him through seasons of both love and loss, pushing him to seek a deeper, more authentic relationship with God.

5

:

founders, entrepreneurs, business

owners, and leaders that are getting

6

:

results and making a difference.

7

:

We'll talk about how they

built their business.

8

:

Are creating movements and leveraging the

power of authority in their own lives.

9

:

Be sure to stick around to the

end of the show and we'll reveal

10

:

how you can be our next guest.

11

:

Let's get started.

12

:

Hi everybody, and welcome to the Power of

Authority Spotlight, where we shine the

13

:

light on amazing people and stories and.

14

:

And movements of people sharing their

story to make an impact in the world.

15

:

And our guest today is somebody I'm

so excited for you to get to know.

16

:

His name is Roger Fight, and he was

raised in a small farm and ranch

17

:

community in Western Oklahoma.

18

:

And during his years, he grew up in

a sheltered church environment that

19

:

discouraged the pursuit of any other

teachings concerning the character of God.

20

:

His hunger for truth took him through

many peaks and valleys of life as

21

:

he experienced the blessings of

love and the heartache of loss.

22

:

But his quest to know and learn led him

to embrace God's sovereignty greater

23

:

with each turn of the path he walked.

24

:

The writings of the book that he's

written, which we will be talking

25

:

about today, misplaced cowboy writings.

26

:

The writings of this book are a small

compilation of his stories and prose.

27

:

Hopefully they're gonna inspire

you to embrace God's wonderful

28

:

sovereignty and understand that

he works out the circumstances of

29

:

their lives for their ultimate good.

30

:

And I just couldn't be more

excited to bring you onto

31

:

the show, Roger, so welcome.

32

:

Thank you very much and

my pleasure to be here.

33

:

Well, I remember when we first met

over the phone, uh, in fact, this is

34

:

the first time you and I are actually

seeing each other over a Zoom because

35

:

we've both admitted we don't love Zoom.

36

:

But um, yeah.

37

:

That's right.

38

:

That's right.

39

:

But we've had so many wonderful,

wonderful phone conversations, and

40

:

I remember the first time us talking

and you sharing a couple stories that

41

:

you had just been putting together,

and not sure yet if, if it, if it.

42

:

Was enough or could be enough for a book.

43

:

And I remember falling in love

with some of your stories and, and

44

:

encouraged you to, to pursue it,

which I know you had already thought

45

:

about, but I'm just so glad you did.

46

:

And, um, but I'm, I'm so glad

our, our pass crossed, you

47

:

know, over a, over a year ago.

48

:

Great.

49

:

Well, uh, I just, uh, I just hope that,

uh, as you said, writings of this book.

50

:

Or something that will inspire somebody.

51

:

Uh, I just, I come to the conclusion, uh,

prayed about it, and I, I figured if, if

52

:

I could affect one person for the good,

for God's kingdom, then it's worth it.

53

:

It absolutely is.

54

:

And, and I do, we will jump into the

book in just a minute and some of the

55

:

stories, but I would love for you to just

share, share your background, you know,

56

:

what, what, where you, um, you know, what

you did throughout your career, where

57

:

you come from, and anything about your

background that you'd just love to share.

58

:

Well, uh, where do I start?

59

:

I think you, uh, you kind of said it

a, a moment ago when you said that I

60

:

was raised in a small farm and ranch

community out in western Oklahoma.

61

:

And the, the community, uh, it was a

good community, but it, it, it, uh,

62

:

the, uh, the spiritual background

there didn't promote a lot of.

63

:

Looking forward.

64

:

I mean, it was, uh, kind

of isolated, if you will.

65

:

And, uh, that never sat well

with me, even as a young man.

66

:

And so I ventured out and, uh, it was

a farming farm and ranch community.

67

:

And I just, that's one of the reasons

I call myself a misplaced cowboy

68

:

because through the years I have had.

69

:

A little bit of farm and ranch

operations and few old cows,

70

:

and that's where I feel at home.

71

:

But, uh, anyway, I, I, uh, went

to university and got a, an

72

:

accounting and economics degree.

73

:

Uh, and I do a social science

degree in there because I thought

74

:

I was gonna go into law school.

75

:

Well, uh, you know, to, to, to

not belabor that I decided I

76

:

had enough school schooling.

77

:

And, uh, uh, besides that, I

wasn't sure that the, uh, integrity

78

:

of a lawyer would suit me.

79

:

No, I'm kidding.

80

:

Bad joke here.

81

:

You know why a snake

won't buy an attorney?

82

:

Right.

83

:

Professional courtesy.

84

:

Anyway, bad jokes.

85

:

My, my boys, I raised two sons and they

used to call me the king of corny jokes.

86

:

But, uh, anyway, let's, let's go on.

87

:

We digress.

88

:

Yeah.

89

:

Uh, but, uh, anyway, I got that and

I worked in oil and gas, uh, for.

90

:

About 20 years, and I was always

in building and in construction.

91

:

And, uh, we sold our company.

92

:

And so I went full-time into, into

the construction mode and I built

93

:

pretty much exclusively custom homes.

94

:

Uh, I don't do a lot of speculative

or anything like that, but,

95

:

uh, that's kind of been my path

from a business standpoint.

96

:

Uh, raised, had two boys,

uh, uh, raised two sons.

97

:

I have one that's I think.

98

:

See he is 40 and 1 43.

99

:

One lives here in this area in Oklahoma.

100

:

He works for Integris Hospital Group.

101

:

Uh, my oldest or my youngest son is a

digital animator and director for Pixar.

102

:

And uh, uh, then my daughter

was killed in a car wreck.

103

:

So, uh, you know, I had

a lot of things kind of.

104

:

Uh, go around in my life.

105

:

I, about 30 years ago, 32 years

ago, I got involved with a

106

:

friend of mine and, uh, went on a

mission project in South America.

107

:

And, uh, God really got a hold of

my heart there and, and, uh, and

108

:

uh, is something that, uh, I knew

that I wanted to be involved in.

109

:

And I kind of.

110

:

Uh, pledged to him that

I wanted to do something.

111

:

So I put together an organization to take,

to do a lot of volunteer missions and,

112

:

uh, I, I put together an organization

called Building for Christ Limited.

113

:

And, uh, what we did there wasn't,

I best I could tell there was

114

:

only one organization similar

to it in Florida at the time.

115

:

And so, uh, put that together and.

116

:

We took groups from all

over the United States.

117

:

Uh, different churches had had,

uh, funds that they wanted to

118

:

share to build a church or build

a Christian school or something.

119

:

Uh, and other churches didn't have

the funds, but they had the people.

120

:

So I put those together and it worked

very well, and we, I've been privileged

121

:

to be able to help, uh, build.

122

:

I believe somewhere around 40 Christian

schools and churches in South America,

123

:

Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, et cetera.

124

:

And, uh, the, you know, and, and working

on four years ago, I lost my wife.

125

:

And, uh, I've always written a little bit.

126

:

Uh, talking about why I wrote

the book, I've always written

127

:

a little bit and I enjoyed it.

128

:

And I, and I, and I really like

to write in a prose type setting.

129

:

And, uh, uh, some of the stories in

the book are, uh, are, are just stories

130

:

of things that I've experienced in

South America or other, and then some

131

:

are just, uh, uh, just a little, just

short, I don't know what you call it.

132

:

Narratives, prose, uh, of different

subjects and, uh, hopefully

133

:

in imparted a little wisdom.

134

:

I know cowboys aren't supposed to have any

of that for Gump and I are first cousins.

135

:

But, uh, that's kind of brings you

up to where, why I wrote the book.

136

:

Uh, uh, I wasn't going to write

anything but a, uh, my sister has

137

:

a, has a son and the 23rd of this

month, he has been inaugurated as

138

:

a college president in Florida.

139

:

And I'm, uh, flying down there to, uh,

he asked me to come to the inauguration.

140

:

So, um, Lynn and I are flying down

to the inauguration, into the ball

141

:

afterwards, and then we're gonna

spend a few days in Charleston.

142

:

But, uh, uh, he stayed with me a couple

of years ago and read some of my, my

143

:

stories and writings, and he has a, he is

a, he has a doctor in the literature and

144

:

he said, Roger, you got to publish this.

145

:

And I says, I says,

Gentry, come get, get back.

146

:

This is just me.

147

:

He says, no, people here need to hear it.

148

:

So that is why he put me over

the edge to try to, to write it.

149

:

And that's shortly

thereafter I contacted you.

150

:

And, uh, here we are.

151

:

And I love the timing of it because

you're gonna go down to that inauguration

152

:

and you're gonna bring your books.

153

:

I hope.

154

:

And you know, I'm not

gonna promote him there.

155

:

That's his, that's his daddy.

156

:

That's his show.

157

:

It is.

158

:

But at least you have to give him one

so that he has Yeah, he already has one.

159

:

Okay.

160

:

Okay.

161

:

Well, to know that what that he and

inspired you and Well, I love your

162

:

story and what I really enjoy about

it is the thread, and I could hear it

163

:

just throughout your life, the thread

of faith and the importance of that.

164

:

That seems to be such a.

165

:

A big part of your, your story.

166

:

Yeah.

167

:

And, and I do love that you

share that openly in your book.

168

:

And let, let's talk about some

of the stories because which,

169

:

which ones are your favorite?

170

:

And give us a little overview.

171

:

Well, before we say that, I

appreciate what you said, but I

172

:

want to add one, one thing to that.

173

:

And that is the fact that

yes, it's about faith.

174

:

But everything I wrote and everything

I do, and every time I can be a

175

:

witness, if possible, I, I want it

to always point to God's sovereignty.

176

:

That is the theme of the book.

177

:

Mm-hmm.

178

:

Does that make sense?

179

:

Yes, absolutely.

180

:

I love it.

181

:

Alright.

182

:

You asked me, you asked

me what is my favorite?

183

:

Yes.

184

:

What's your favorite story?

185

:

I don't know.

186

:

Uh, I like to share the things that, uh,

God allowed me to see in my mi in the

187

:

mission work that I did in South America.

188

:

Uh, I, I love to share that.

189

:

Uh, you know, let me tell you, when I

wrote this book, uh, I didn't sit down

190

:

and just write it over a period of time.

191

:

This, these were things that I wrote.

192

:

Uh, as I was inspired to ride, I

might have, I, I may have had a large

193

:

project going on in another part of

the state and I might be driving on

194

:

the interstate and my mind would just,

I think too much and my mind would

195

:

grab a thought and I would be inspired

and I'd pull up the side of the road

196

:

and write one right there, uh, or.

197

:

I might get up of the morning

and first thing I do, Nicole,

198

:

not Nicole, I'm sorry, Michelle.

199

:

Um, Nicole's on my team and she's great.

200

:

So, well, both of you guys are great.

201

:

But anyway, uh, I stumbled to the

coffee pot and get, make my coffee

202

:

and if it is cool weather, I go to the

fireplace and sit there and drink it.

203

:

Well.

204

:

I may have done that.

205

:

And I think there's a number of times I

sat there and as I reflected, uh, prayed

206

:

a little bit and reflected, I just sat

there and wrote a story or a narrative.

207

:

That's, that's when I did it.

208

:

It wasn't a matter.

209

:

'cause I have a friend that

wrote a book and he said, I just

210

:

took two weeks and wrote it.

211

:

I said, no, that's not me.

212

:

Me either.

213

:

Me either.

214

:

I actually, uh, it doesn't take me

long to write a book, but I do have

215

:

to have that inspiration and Yes.

216

:

And I don't feel the need

to have to write every day.

217

:

Yeah.

218

:

Yeah.

219

:

I feel it.

220

:

Yeah.

221

:

But, uh, uh, but those,

those things were, uh.

222

:

I don't know.

223

:

I, I, I think, uh, there's a section

in my book and it's called Loss.

224

:

Mm-hmm.

225

:

Uh, and uh, I really kinda enjoyed

sharing those things with people

226

:

in the hopes that many people lose.

227

:

Lose loved ones through life.

228

:

And I was hope, I hoped that

some of that could help someone.

229

:

Yeah.

230

:

So I enjoyed writing about that.

231

:

Not that loss was fun because

it's, uh, uh, there's section

232

:

in there about love again.

233

:

That was fun to write also.

234

:

Yeah.

235

:

But, uh, and, and that's my line, but,

um, I just hope that whatever I wrote.

236

:

Somebody, because I, I, I will

tell you, I've had so many comments

237

:

about the book and it seems like

almost everyone that comments has a

238

:

different writing that they enjoyed.

239

:

Okay.

240

:

And I like that.

241

:

I like that because you're

meeting people where they are and

242

:

everybody's in a different place.

243

:

Some might still be in the grief

journey or some are beyond it, you know?

244

:

Yeah.

245

:

In the next chapter, like, yeah.

246

:

Yeah.

247

:

So, um, I, I, I just, I feel like

they're very, they're, they're, you

248

:

do take us through some of the things

that you've experienced, but they

249

:

are still so hopeful and so, um.

250

:

That's the best word I'm thinking of.

251

:

They're just, they provide so much hope.

252

:

I just, I like that.

253

:

I like that hope.

254

:

That's, if I didn't think that, if I

thought I was just doing it for myself,

255

:

I probably wouldn't have written it.

256

:

I know, I know.

257

:

Well, and, uh, what is, so, and, and

I know we talked about this before we

258

:

even pushed the record button, whether

or not there's another book, but what

259

:

is, what is your next, what is on the

horizon now that this book is out and

260

:

we wanna make sure we get it still in

front of as many people as possible?

261

:

What is Well.

262

:

You mean next chapter

gonna be another book?

263

:

Is that what you're asking?

264

:

Yes.

265

:

Yes.

266

:

Uh, maybe I have been asked to do that.

267

:

And, uh, uh, we'll see, uh,

uh, we'll see how it goes.

268

:

And, uh, I'm very busy with my, I'm, I

build custom homes as, uh, we discussed.

269

:

And, uh, uh, I'm bit, I'm, so I'm

supposed to be retired, Michelle.

270

:

But I'm just not smart enough to

figure out how to do that, you know?

271

:

But, uh, anyway, I'm still working

and I've got some projects for, for

272

:

some time, and, uh, so I'll be busy

with that and I'm still, and I'm, uh,

273

:

getting back into some mission work.

274

:

So I'm doing some of that and, uh.

275

:

I have a new wife that's probably

gonna keep me pretty busy, so I hope

276

:

she'll let me have a little time by

the fireplace to write something.

277

:

Well, I think you're just getting

started, so whatever that future

278

:

is, if it's another book or not,

just keep writing your stories and

279

:

sharing your stories and, and just

being the inspiration that you are.

280

:

And you are a misplaced cowboy,

but you're writing well, that's as

281

:

I shared in my book a time or two.

282

:

Uh.

283

:

I like pretty much all things Western.

284

:

I I, I'm a, I'm a dreamer.

285

:

Yeah.

286

:

You're from Oklahoma.

287

:

I believe it.

288

:

I see it.

289

:

And you know what, we're gonna, I,

I just, I love that about you, so.

290

:

Well, thank you so much.

291

:

If people wanna get their hands on

the book or if they wanna get ahold of

292

:

you, what's the best way to do that?

293

:

Well, it's, uh, it's,

it's on sale@amazon.com.

294

:

It's only, uh, you can purchase

it at, uh, barnes and noble.com.

295

:

Uh, united kingdom.com.

296

:

Um.

297

:

Or, uh, I believe walmart.com

298

:

has it also.

299

:

I'm not sure.

300

:

Or, you know, plenty of online retailers

are carrying it, that's for sure.

301

:

Yeah.

302

:

Yeah.

303

:

But you said you asked the question.

304

:

Uh, now would they get ahold of me?

305

:

I guess?

306

:

Uh, I, I don't have my contact on the

book, but, um, um, I guess I could

307

:

share my email with you if you'd like.

308

:

Well, I tell you what, I tell you

what, we can put it in the show

309

:

notes, but more than anything, we

want just folks to read the book.

310

:

So definitely go to the

easiest is probably Amazon.

311

:

Go to Amazon and buy the book again.

312

:

It's called, uh, mis

misplaced Cowboys writings.

313

:

Uh, that's hard for you to say.

314

:

It's, it's like, shouldn't be

a tongue twister, but for some

315

:

reason it's been a tongue twister

every time I've said it today.

316

:

Um, and it's Roger Fi FITE.

317

:

So I hope everyone listening grabs their

copy and I would suggest you grab two to

318

:

share it with a friend because the stories

really are inspiring, inspirational, um.

319

:

Hopeful, and I think we all need

a little bit of hope these days.

320

:

Well, I, I do too.

321

:

Uh, I, I have, uh, my own style.

322

:

Mm-hmm.

323

:

Uh, and, uh, that's, I've had, not

to digress, but I've had numerous

324

:

comments about people enjoying my

style because I try to convey a

325

:

thought, a message, a story with this,

with fewer words than some would.

326

:

And, uh, I, I want

everything to be meaningful.

327

:

Yes.

328

:

And beautifully written.

329

:

So thank you, Roger.

330

:

Thank you so much for being on the

show and, uh, can't wait to hear what's

331

:

gonna come next, but go enjoy your

time with your beautiful new bride.

332

:

And uh, again, just thank you for

so much for being on the show.

333
