Twenty-five years after September 11, what stays with you is not only what happened, but what the experience taught you about how to live. Michael Hingson looks back on escaping the World Trade Center with his guide dog, Roselle, and reflects on the lessons that have continued to shape his life ever since. Through his conversation with Michelle Abraham, Michael explores what it means to face fear without allowing it to take over, to trust yourself even when others underestimate you, and to focus your energy on what you can actually control. He reflects on the quiet forms of leadership that helped people keep moving that morning, the unexpected wisdom Roselle demonstrated by simply living in the present, and the way September 11 ultimately redirected his life toward speaking and helping others recognize their own resilience. His perspective 25 years later is not about pretending difficult things will not happen. It is about discovering that you may have more strength, awareness, and capacity to respond than you realize.
Highlights:
- Learning to Live With Fear Without Letting It Lead – Michael reflects on the difference between experiencing fear and allowing it to overwhelm, blind, or paralyze you.
- Focusing on What Is Actually Within Your Control – One of the most enduring lessons Michael carries is learning to release the endless “what ifs” and put your attention on the choices you can make in the moment.
- The Quiet Leadership That Helps Others Keep Going – You’ll hear how calm voices, encouragement, humor, and steady presence can influence the people around you when uncertainty is high.
- Trusting Yourself Beyond Other People’s Assumptions – Michael challenges assumptions about blindness and reflects on the importance of trusting his own awareness, judgment, and partnership with Roselle.
- Turning an Unimaginable Experience Into Purpose – Twenty-five years later, Michael considers how September 11 changed the direction of his life and became the foundation for the lessons about resilience and human capability he now shares with others.
