We’ve arrived now in the college years.  For reasons to be revealed, Michele retreats somewhat into a more prudish place when it comes to love. Not until her Junior year does she have a romance with a young Italian guy while studying at Stanford-in-Italy.  Michele reflects on why she was hanging out with Roberto instead of the very marriageable classmate named Jim.  This is a theme than repeats and repeats as her life moves on. She describes in full-blown, distressing terms what happens when she returns to the home campus and is about to graduate. Bobby, her high school squeeze, returns to the scene and definitely upsets her applecart!

Shortly after this, Michele returns to Italy with a childhood girlfriend.  After a stop in Switzerland to visit relatives, the two travel to Florence and set up camp.  Here Michele meets a young doctor who is to become one of the great loves of her life.
