Speaker:That night,
Speaker:Adam dreamt of the farm again.
Speaker:His dad was telling him a joke, like he always did.
Speaker:The older pine marten had a sense of humor that was rare in post-apocalypse.
Speaker:He tried to understand what the words meant,
Speaker:and when he didn't get the joke,
Speaker:his father laughed and took him into a hug.
Speaker:But his hug was small, completely unlike the big ones he was used to.
Speaker:His father was tiny.
Speaker:Smaller than him,
Speaker:which was weird because he was only ten in this dream.
Speaker:Adam reached his muzzle down to sniff his father's scent.
Speaker:He gasped, pulling himself awake and fluttering the sheets off of him.
Speaker:It took several blinks, and a whimpering little howl before he realized that Liam had snuck in bed with him.
Speaker:The wolf looked absolutely pathetic,
Speaker:groaning as he rubbed the sand out of his eyes.
Speaker:"Why're— why're we up so soon,"
Speaker:he said, but then caught on to Adam's urgency.
Speaker:He flipped his muzzle left and right, and said in a hush,
Speaker:"Are we being attacked?"
Speaker:Adam scoffed out,
Speaker:"Only by you! Why the hell were you in my bed?"
Speaker:Still mulling, Liam yawned and said,
Speaker:"I couldn't find the other bedroom."
Speaker:Lie, but like, duh.
Speaker:"The other bedroom?
Speaker:The one right across from mine?"
Speaker:Adam said, pointing to the door.
Speaker:Liam nodded sheepishly.
Speaker:"When'd you even get in here?"
Speaker:The wolf's muzzle went up,
Speaker:a finger touching his chin.
Speaker:He scratched it for a second before saying, "I dunno.
Speaker:You went to sleep really fast " Ugh.
Speaker:Truth. Adam's whiskers twitched,
Speaker:and he brought his nose to his chest.
Speaker:He didn't need to sniff himself, though he did anyways.
Speaker:Through the light of the rising sun creeping through the window,
Speaker:he could see it. Wolf fur.
Speaker:Everywhere! And his scent was wolf too.
Speaker:Frantically, he tried brushing it off,
Speaker:but most of it clung to him anyways.
Speaker:"Gosh dangit!" he cursed,
Speaker:throwing his arms up.
Speaker:"I just got these washed last month.
Speaker:Now I'm gonna need to get them cleaned again when we get to town."
Speaker:Liam giggled, and dodged a swipe from the pine marten.
Speaker:He chased him for a good fifteen minutes, up and down the house, through rooms and kitchen,
Speaker:and even around the yard a couple times.
Speaker:They laughed the entire time.
Speaker:Adam flumped on to the couch, still panting hard.
Speaker:Liam took the spot furthest from him,
Speaker:tongue hanging out as he tried to catch his breath.
Speaker:Then he slurped it back into his muzzle wetly.
Speaker:His eyes went to the marten and he asked,
Speaker:"What's for breakfast.
Speaker:breakfast." A sly smile creeped up the side of his muzzle
Speaker:and he turned to face Liam.
Speaker:"I've got eggs in the pantry and some smoked ham sealed and kept cool in the basement."
Speaker:The wolf's eyes went wide, wider than he'd ever seen on a canid.
Speaker:His maw hung open,
Speaker:drool watering down the sides of his lips.
Speaker:"Really?" he asked in a gasp.
Speaker:Adam reached to an end table next to the couch,
Speaker:pulling open and grabbing two bags.
Speaker:He chucked one over to Liam.
Speaker:"No. Dried fruits and nuts."
Speaker:The wolf fumbled for the bag, accidently reaching with his bad paw
Speaker:and letting out a little howl in pain.
Speaker:Adam cursed at himself, scootching across the couch to check up his injury.
Speaker:Liam reluctantly let him grab his wrist
Speaker:and bring it over to inspect.
Speaker:The pine marten muttered,
Speaker:"Sorry." "That wasn't very nice,"
Speaker:he whimpered. Adam furrowed his brow and repeated,
Speaker:"I said I was sorry."
Speaker:"No, about getting my hopes up for breakfast,"
Speaker:Liam clarified like a brat.
Speaker:Adam ignored him,
Speaker:checking the bandages.
Speaker:There was blood on it,
Speaker:but nothing new.
Speaker:It was dry and the wolf was healing.
Speaker:He let out a sigh in relief, and let Liam eat his breakfast of dried fruits and nuts.
Speaker:Adam had plenty to spare.
Speaker:They left the house, again,
Speaker:Adam taking forever to find the right key to lock it up.
Speaker:With the mountains to their front
Speaker:and the checkpoint to their back,
Speaker:they proceeded through the forest.
Speaker:Liam was given a backpack of his own to help him carry the batteries.
Speaker:He figured that he could let the wolf keep it when he got him to his tribe again.
Speaker:Backpacks weren't in short supply.
Speaker:Thousands of them littered the wasteland, still attached to ill-prepared scavengers.
Speaker:"Hey, Adam?" Liam asked,
Speaker:trotting up to the pine marten's side.
Speaker:He didn't like whatever question he had in mind for him,
Speaker:but he humored the wolf.
Speaker:"Yeah?" With his muzzle to the ground, he asked shyly,
Speaker:"Why do you live so far away from the settlement?" Ugh,
Speaker:he knew he wasn't going to like it.
Speaker:"Because I'm a scavenger.
Speaker:All the stuff around the settlements have been picked clean already.
Speaker:You need to go far in order to get the good stuff,"
Speaker:he said, hoping his answer would suffice him.
Speaker:It didn't. "But don't you get lonely?"
Speaker:Adam stopped, and looked around. There was
Speaker:a boulder that he dropped his backpack next to and leaned on.
Speaker:"Not really?" he sighed,
Speaker:and when the wolf gave him a quizzical look,
Speaker:he explained, "I just—
Speaker:growing up, I was surrounded by my brothers and sisters and family,
Speaker:and I just needed some space to myself.
Speaker:I like some me time."
Speaker:It was the truth,
Speaker:but the cub wanted more.
Speaker:"What about a girlfriend?"
Speaker:Adam barked a laugh,
Speaker:"Ew. No!" and Liam jumped with surprise.
Speaker:The pine marten waved a paw to settle himself down and said,
Speaker:"I mean, maybe? But not really? I dunno. Never thought of it."
Speaker:Liam shuffled his feet.
Speaker:"Boy...friend?" Adam shoved the wolf playfully and puckered his lips.
Speaker:"Why? You asking me out?"
Speaker:Liam laughed and shoved him back. "You're a dumbhead."
Speaker:Truth. Before they could continue on,
Speaker:the wolf's ears perk up as he saw something just over the boulder.
Speaker:Adam turned, worried for a split second that it was another post-apocalyptic nightmare in the woods.
Speaker:Instead though, he could see a mansion through the trees.
Speaker:Liam took a step forward, asking,
Speaker:"Is that one of your places?"
Speaker:Adam shook his head.
Speaker:"Nah, that place is boarded up good.
Speaker:Never been able to prospect it."
Speaker:That didn't stop Liam from walking towards it.
Speaker:"We should look again.
Speaker:Imagine what we could get."
Speaker:Adam had seen the boy's enthusiasm,
Speaker:and he had a knack of knowing things he didn't.
Speaker:It might add a day to their trip,
Speaker:and he'd much rather get Liam home, but something in the back of his mind told him he could spare the time.
Speaker:He wasn't sure where that thought was coming from.
Speaker:His mom wouldn't have had him do it.
Speaker:But mom wasn't here right now
Speaker:and spending time with Liam had been a little fun.
Speaker:As much as he did like his own space,
Speaker:the wolf had reminded him how good being with others could be.
Speaker:So he shrugged his shoulders and pointed the way there.
Speaker:The manor was gated,
Speaker:but a fallen oak had torn through a side wall.
Speaker:They crawled over the rubble,
Speaker:each helping one another over the bricks.
Speaker:Adam had Liam stay behind him as they circled the house for an entrance.
Speaker:There was no telling when a squatter or rival scavenger was around,
Speaker:ready to protect their finds.
Speaker:But like before, there was no obvious entrance that wasn't sealed shut or boarded up.
Speaker:All cept a shoot that led to the basement.
Speaker:It'd been wedged open by a pipe from someone else,
Speaker:but too small for Adam to fit.
Speaker:Liam stuck his head inside.
Speaker:"Hey, hey! Careful," Adam shouted,
Speaker:grabbing the boy by his backpack and pulling him away.
Speaker:Liam tore the backpack off of himself,
Speaker:and crouched to the entrance.
Speaker:"I think I can fit,"
Speaker:he said, looking ready to dive in.
Speaker:"No," Adam blurted out.
Speaker:"If you get stuck or if you can't get back out, we'll be in deep shit."
Speaker:The wolf shook his head,
Speaker:"Just because your fat ass—"
Speaker:"Language," Adam reminded him.
Speaker:"Just because your fat butt can't fit, doesn't mean I can't get in and out.
Speaker:Look, it's even got ridges."
Speaker:He pointed and Adam could see where it would be easy to crawl down.
Speaker:The pine marten didn't like this,
Speaker:but that voice inside his head told him that he was right.
Speaker:A completely unprospected house was worth its weight in gold.
Speaker:There could be TVs, big ones, and even prized silverware.
Speaker:Heck, maybe even stainless steel pots for him to take home. "Hmm,
Speaker:fine. I guess," he said,
Speaker:still a little unsure of himself.
Speaker:"But if you see anything or of it gets hairy,
Speaker:you call me and I'll come back and ax my way through a door.
Speaker:door." Thinking about it,
Speaker:he could've done that all along,
Speaker:but never really put the effort into it. Liam nodded, got on all fours,
Speaker:and was gone in a second.
Speaker:Adam waited, listening intently to the sounds from inside.
Speaker:After a minute's silence,
Speaker:there came a sharp yip.
Speaker:"Liam!" Adam cried through the hole,
Speaker:about ready to squeeze his way in.
Speaker:If the boy was hurt, it was his fault.
Speaker:He'd surely be responsible and his mom would never forgive him for being so foolish.
Speaker:He'd never be able to look at himself in the mirror—
Speaker:The wolf's head poked out from the shoot.
Speaker:"Jesus, Liam. You scared the shit out of me."
Speaker:He crawled out from the opening slowly,
Speaker:muzzle slightly agape.
Speaker:There was a drowsiness to him that Adam couldn't quite grasp.
Speaker:When the boy looked up,
Speaker:and he had a smile on his face.
Speaker:"Adam. You really got to come down there and see what I saw,"
Speaker:he said, voice a little hazy.
Speaker:The pine marten's muzzle twisted and eyed the wolf up and down.
Speaker:"Was there anyone down there?" His head shook back and forth.
Speaker:"No." Lie. It was a strange lie.
Speaker:"What did you see down there?"
Speaker:Adam asked, fear making him grip around a strap of his backpack.
Speaker:The wolf smiled up at him.
Speaker:"It's treasure trove down there.
Speaker:They've got everything."
Speaker:Lie. Adam looked down at the hole, the hackles on the back of his neck rising.
Speaker:"Liam, I don't think I can fit,"
Speaker:he gulped out, words hushed.
Speaker:"Sure you can. I'll go first.
Speaker:They've even got hundreds of stainless steel pots and pans,"
Speaker:the wolf said, turning down to crawl back inside.
Speaker:Lie. Adam never mentioned the pots on his mind.
Speaker:Not once. Before the wolf could crawl back inside, Adam grabbed him by the shoulder and tried pulled him back.
Speaker:Liam snarled, and snapped his jaw at him.
Speaker:It just barely missed his fingers.
Speaker:He tried to calm him down,
Speaker:holding up a paw while pulling off his backpack.
Speaker:"Hey, easy. You can't go in there yet,"
Speaker:Adam said, trying to play along with the wolf.
Speaker:Liam's head crooked
Speaker:and he continued,
Speaker:"Remember. You need to wear your special hat first.
Speaker:Then I'll go down with you.
Speaker:You like hats, right?"
Speaker:As he pulled open his backpack,
Speaker:the cub stared confused.
Speaker:"I don't like hats."
Speaker:Truth. But then he corrected himself.
Speaker:"I mean, I like hats."
Speaker:Lie. It wasn't Liam's lie.
Speaker:"I'll put on the hat and we'll go inside together," the cub said, nodding up and down.
Speaker:Adam rummaged through his bag, not taking his eye off of the cub.
Speaker:He could now see just how fogged over his gaze was.
Speaker:His head seemed to drift about lazily,
Speaker:not looking fully attached to his neck.
Speaker:There was an impatience growing in him,
Speaker:his muzzle pulling back in twitches.
Speaker:"Ah, your hat," Adam exclaimed cheerfully,
Speaker:the wolf smiling as well.
Speaker:He pulled out a sheet of aluminum foil,
Speaker:bowling it up so that it could fit on his head.
Speaker:"That's a hat?" Liam asked,
Speaker:not sure of what he was seeing.
Speaker:"A very," —Adam stepped forward—
Speaker:"very," —he carefully raised the foil over the wolf's head—
Speaker:"special" — he braced himself,
Speaker:nothing the cub's muzzle pulling back in a snarl,
Speaker:fangs beared— "special hat," he finished by putting it right between Liam's ears.
Speaker:The cub roared and screamed
Speaker:out all at once. Adam wrapped himself around Liam, holding him tightly and keeping him from moving much.
Speaker:The wolf's fangs sunk into his arm and his claws tore at his shirt.
Speaker:Through it all, he never let him go.
Speaker:Liam's jaw came off of the marten's arm and he cried out, "I can't breathe!" His legs kicked into the air as he continued to struggle .
Speaker:"I can't breathe!" Adam shushed him,
Speaker:trying to soothe him until the boy went limp in his arms.
Speaker:In a sob, he repeated,
Speaker:"I can't breathe." "I got you. It's alright.
Speaker:It's gonna be alright,"
Speaker:he said, turning his head to the opening.
Speaker:There was a rustling from the shoot.
Speaker:Thousands of nasty little things charging to the entrance.
Speaker:Adam tried to let go of Liam,
Speaker:but the wolf braced him tightly, too afraid to let go.
Speaker:He had to practically drag him towards the opening,
Speaker:the cub fighting him the entire way.
Speaker:Adam saw them. A million spiders crawling up in waves.
Speaker:Their appendages clicked and clacked as they raced to the two of them.
Speaker:With all his strength, he lunged his foot forward and bashed at the pipe.
Speaker:It came loose instantly,
Speaker:flying deep into the basement
Speaker:and the shoot's opening sealed shut with a loud slam.
Speaker:Nothing escaped. He heard them rattle against the metal flap,
Speaker:fruitlessly trying to find an opening.
Speaker:It didn't budge. Even still,
Speaker:he heard their whispers in his mind:
Speaker:that voice that he didn't know in his head,
Speaker:promising him stainless steel pots,
Speaker:ham and eggs, wondrous treasures, and even hugs and kisses from his mom.
Speaker:"There were so many of them,"
Speaker:Liam said, the two of them sitting on the rubble of the torn down wall.
Speaker:The wolf was rubbing his bloodshot eyes, still sniffling. "There
Speaker:were millions, crawling all over me
Speaker:and making me do things I didn't want to."
Speaker:Adam patted him on the shoulder.
Speaker:"Weavers. Usually they're just little spider colonies that lure in small animals by getting in their heads.
Speaker:I've heard that when they get too big, they're strong enough to trick people too.
Speaker:We're lucky I even heard of this trick,
Speaker:though I wasn't sure if it would work.
Speaker:Always kept a sheet of aluminum in my backpack just in case."
Speaker:The wolf nodded his head up and down before saying,
Speaker:"I'm sorry. I didn't want to tell you to go in."
Speaker:Adam shook his head firmly, muzzle wrinkled.
Speaker:"No, Liam. I'm sorry.
Speaker:I let you go in there and that's my fault,"
Speaker:he said, and then, after thinking about it for a good second,
Speaker:he pulled the cub into a hug.
Speaker:"It'll never happen again,"
Speaker:he promised into his nape.
Speaker:The two walked from the property, mountains in front of them, flames behind.
Speaker:Just as Adam expected, their detour had cost them too much time.
Speaker:As well, Liam had gotten him pretty good with his claws and fangs.
Speaker:With the adrenaline gone, his arm burned.
Speaker:Luckily, he had another safe spot between them and the settlement.
Speaker:It was a dinky little room,
Speaker:the rest of the house torn apart in splinters.
Speaker:They just needed a door to lock and a bed to sleep in.
Speaker:Adam sighed, dropping the backpack onto the floor.
Speaker:Liam was still pretty shook up from the experience,
Speaker:quiet most of the trip.
Speaker:The pine marten was first to break the silence, pointing to the bed.
Speaker:"You can sleep there and
Speaker:I'll take the floor."
Speaker:Liam nodded, but didn't make a move to the bed.
Speaker:He just stood, backpack clutched tightly to himself.
Speaker:Adam rolled his eyes, walking to a nightstand and pulling out two more bags of dried nuts.
Speaker:As he passed one to the cub, he asked,
Speaker:"If I sleep on the floor,
Speaker:I'm still gonna find you curled up against me in the morning, aren't I?"
Speaker:He shrugged, cracking a half-smile for the first time since the mansion.
Speaker:They patched up the pine marten's arm,
Speaker:Liam apologizing the entire time.
Speaker:When it was all done,
Speaker:they slept on the bed together,
Speaker:Adam wrapped around the boy's back.
Speaker:He dreamed of his family,
Speaker:all of them bundled together on a massive bed.
Speaker:Right in the center,
Speaker:was Liam. When they left in the morning,
Speaker:the boy was in much higher spirits.
Speaker:He chatted about the things he saw when his family was away.
Speaker:Stories about a nightcrawler he had to fight off with a torch.
Speaker:There was a man he gambled with for a scrap of meat.
Speaker:Only some little lies in between.
Speaker:Adam pointed forward.
Speaker:"There it is," he said
Speaker:just as they met a torn alsphalt road.
Speaker:Straight from the street was the settlement he had done most of his trading with.
Speaker:It was obvious, even from a distance.
Speaker:Tall sheets of metal rose from the ground,
Speaker:reinforced by concrete slabs.
Speaker:Two towers stood at the gate, men on top with rifles like the one on his back.
Speaker:He waved as they approached, and they called for the gate to be opened.
Speaker:A dingo ushered them in,
Speaker:eyeing them suspiciously, along with the horizon.
Speaker:Adam was used to this treatment.
Speaker:These folk couldn't possibly understand why anyone would live outside their gates.
Speaker:Something about it was dishonest and untrustworthy.
Speaker:He didn't need to justify his reasons.
Speaker:Adam pulled Liam to the dingo and said,
Speaker:"Can you watch over him a second?"
Speaker:The canine scoffed,
Speaker:"I'm not a babysitter."
Speaker:Adam was quick, pointing at the cub.
Speaker:"You're a guard, so why don't you do the one thing you're good at and guard something."
Speaker:He rolled his eyes and shrugged.
Speaker:"Get signed in. I won't be here long."
Speaker:Even as he agreed,
Speaker:Adam looked him over,
Speaker:a threat that promised there'd be problems if Liam wasn't there when he got back.
Speaker:He then turned to wolf and said,
Speaker:"I'll be right back.
Speaker:Anyone tries to talk to you, just be your annoying self and they'll go away.
Speaker:away." Liam looked to protest, but he was already walking away.
Speaker:"Name," a portly otter asked as she looked down at a sheet of paper.
Speaker:Adam groaned as he stood in front for the makeshift compliance office.
Speaker:It was really just a canopy and a desk for the otter to sit at.
Speaker:"Every single time, Lucy?"
Speaker:he asked, pointing a finger at her sheet.
Speaker:"You know my name."
Speaker:"Name," she repeated, this time tapping her pen on the table.
Speaker:"Adam," he said, looking towards the inside of the settlement.
Speaker:Most of the buildings were just shacks strown together by plywood.
Speaker:Men and women were walking about freely,
Speaker:protected by the tall walls
Speaker:and Lucy, who made sure only the right people got in.
Speaker:"Business?" she asked in her melancholy tone.
Speaker:"Actually," Adam started,
Speaker:lowering his voice.
Speaker:"That's what I wanted to talk to you about.
Speaker:about." Trying to be sly,
Speaker:he nudged his head back to where Liam was standing.
Speaker:"That wolf. I picked him up and I'm trying to get him back to his tribe.
Speaker:You seen them around?
Speaker:Probably all blue cloaks."
Speaker:With a thwack, she put down her pen and glared up at him.
Speaker:"You know that information is not for you,"
Speaker:she said, and then pulled her sheet back like he might sneak a peek.
Speaker:Adam growled, "He's a lost cub.
Speaker:I'm just trying to get him back to his family.
Speaker:family." Seeing the otter's brows furrow, he backed off.
Speaker:"I just need someone to point me in the right direction."
Speaker:It didn't move her.
Speaker:"That sounds like you put problems on yourself. I can't help you,"
Speaker:she said flatly. Groaning, Adam turned his backpack around and showed the Thunderhoof antlers on his back.
Speaker:He jiggled them around before saying,
Speaker:"If you tell me where they're at,
Speaker:you can have one.
Speaker:How's that for a trade?"
Speaker:Her eyes seemed to radiate with the glow of the rack.
Speaker:She looked back and forth, considering her options.
Speaker:Then she said, "Giving information like that can really harm my reputation.
Speaker:I think for both,
Speaker:I'd be willing to—"
Speaker:"—You know, I'll just look for myself,"
Speaker:he interupted and saddled
Speaker:the backpack. Lucy thrusted a paw forward.
Speaker:"Wait," she said, and then paused.
Speaker:Her paw wrapped against the desk several times before she continued,
Speaker:"They're here. Small tribe down in the south part of the settlement. Hunters.
Speaker:Look for the hides."
Speaker:Hunters. Adam thought.
Speaker:It was beginning to make sense how this boy could survive on his own.
Speaker:Unlike scavengers like himself,
Speaker:Hunters weren't interested in picking at the remains of the former world.
Speaker:They chased down the beasts for their hides and radioactive properties.
Speaker:Adam sighed and nodded,
Speaker:and just before he was about to walk back to Liam,
Speaker:she coughed. Her paw went out and she shook it expectantly.
Speaker:The pine marten shook his head,
Speaker:pulling his backpack off and ripping the antlers in half.
Speaker:When he gave it to her, he said,
Speaker:"You're cold. He's just a boy."
Speaker:She took it and nodded in agreement.
Speaker:"It's a cole world.
Speaker:We do what we can to survive, so hopefully it's worth it."
Speaker:Liam was standing next to the dingo, explaining his whole adventure to the guard.
Speaker:He had his eyes forward, trying to ignore the cub, even as he waved his broken fingers in his face.
Speaker:"If they don't heal right,
Speaker:they'll look crooked and that'll be badass, right?" Liam
Speaker:asked the guard.
Speaker:"Language," Adam repeated to him
Speaker:as he got behind Liam,
Speaker:putting his paws on his shoulders.
Speaker:He gave a nod to the dingo, who remained unphased up until the moment
Speaker:the wolf spun around.
Speaker:The guard let his shoulders relax and mouthed,
Speaker:"thank God." Adam led him away,
Speaker:keeping him by his side.
Speaker:He didn't think he was that bad.
Speaker:These past few days had been an adventure,
Speaker:but it was all about to come to an end shortly.
Speaker:The pine marten wanted to spend these last moments close by.
Speaker:"Where are we going?" Liam
Speaker:asked, noticing a row of booths with food, supplies, and gadgets.
Speaker:Even the wolf could see that every teller was eyeing at the remaining half of the thunderhoof's antlers
Speaker:with envy in their eyes.
Speaker:"I got a guy. He's just a little ways ahead,"
Speaker:Adam assured him.
Speaker:Liam slowly began to hault.
Speaker:"Adam," he started, looking at the road ahead.
Speaker:His eyes faced the mountains, towards the most south part of the city.
Speaker:There were words in muzzle,
Speaker:but the pine marten reassured him,
Speaker:"It'll be fine." They continued through the city.
Speaker:Only a fifteen minute walk,
Speaker:did Adam see what he was looking for.
Speaker:"Hey!" he cried out,
Speaker:just as watched a group turn a corner behind a building.
Speaker:They didn't stop,
Speaker:so he picked up his pace,
Speaker:letting Liam fall behind.
Speaker:When he rounded the corner, he saw a group of wolves, all in blue cloaks.
Speaker:"Hey! I think you guys lost something,"
Speaker:Adam called again, this time getting their attention.
Speaker:The whole caravan stopped, turning to face the pine marten.
Speaker:There was maybe a dozen or so of them.
Speaker:Some manner of beast had been yolked to a cart carrying the hides
Speaker:Lucy had mentioned.
Speaker:The alpha of the group stepped forward,
Speaker:a wolfess with the barrel of a rifle sticking up
Speaker:a foot behind her ears.
Speaker:She spread her paws, muzzle shifting left and right.
Speaker:"Are you being funny with me?"
Speaker:she asked, a wicked smile on her muzzle;
Speaker:a challenge in her eyes.
Speaker:Her voice was hoarse,
Speaker:like she gargled gravel,
Speaker:though she looked the same age as Adam.
Speaker:He gulped, motioning behind himself, but when he turned around, Liam wasn't there.
Speaker:Adam spun around,
Speaker:noticing the wolf hiding behind the building.
Speaker:With the wave of his paw, he ushered him forward.
Speaker:The boy stayed put.
Speaker:"C'mon. It's alright,"
Speaker:he said, feeling relieved that he had done what he set out to do.
Speaker:Liam was reluctant,
Speaker:but nodded his head and walked out of cover.
Speaker:His tail was between his legs
Speaker:and his muzzle faced the ground.
Speaker:He didn't look up.
Speaker:Adam turned back to the alpha, expecting to see a look of relief on her face.
Speaker:It wasn't there. Her mocking smile sagged until it dripped off her muzzle
Speaker:in a frown. Both her eyes narrowed to slits and the tip of her snout wrinkled.
Speaker:She opened her mouth to lick at a fang before saying,
Speaker:"Didn't lose nothing."
Speaker:Most of the caravan shrugged,
Speaker:turning away and starting to walk as a group away from them.
Speaker:Adam's mind was racing, not sure the mistake he made.
Speaker:He reached back, grabbing Liam and trying to pull him forward.
Speaker:The wolf's feet scraped over the asphalt.
Speaker:"He's your tribe. Look at him,"
Speaker:Adam pleaded, trying to get a few steps forward as Liam fought to hold his ground.
Speaker:All dozen or so wolf's halted in a single movement,
Speaker:heads turning at once.
Speaker:Adam swore he could hear the sound of a couple hammers clicking back.
Speaker:The tribe didn't like it when strangers were insoluent to the alpha.
Speaker:He stopped moving forward.
Speaker:Adam looked over all of them, wrought with confusion.
Speaker:Their fur, their muzzles, their cloaks.
Speaker:They all seemed so similar to Liam, especially the alpha.
Speaker:It was only when he really looked at them, he could see their differences.
Speaker:The wolves were bigger,
Speaker:thicker, and looked even harder than Liam already did.
Speaker:He didn't realize it until now what the boy was to them.
Speaker:He was the runt. All their faces were turned, eyebrows cocked staring at the little wolf.
Speaker:Their muzzles twisted,
Speaker:like they were all glancing into a funny mirror.
Speaker:Like the group was experiencing an uncanny valley seeing something that was like them,
Speaker:but not them. Only the alpha looked at him
Speaker:with any sense of familiarity,
Speaker:too akin to deny their relationship.
Speaker:She was his mom. Adam was ready to speak,
Speaker:his maw opening, but she cut him off before a word could get out.
Speaker:"If it comes any closer,"
Speaker:she started, waving a paw for the rest of the wolves to stand down.
Speaker:They relaxed, and she finished,
Speaker:"I'll snap its neck myself."
Speaker:The hackles on the back of his neck rose.
Speaker:Blood coursed through his entire body, skin feeling hot underneath his fur.
Speaker:An instinctual need to protect Liam from her overwhelmed his senses.
Speaker:He grabbed the strap of the backpack, the rifle on his mind.
Speaker:Her brow went up,
Speaker:a bloodlust pulling her muzzle back into that same twisted smile he was greeted with.
Speaker:A paw grabbed Adam's arm, tugging him back.
Speaker:He turned his head, looking down at Liam.
Speaker:The wolf pulled him with his injured paw,
Speaker:muzzle still dipped to the ground.
Speaker:He whispered, "It'll be fine,"
Speaker:and then he looked up firmly and repeated,
Speaker:"It's fine." Lie. It wasn't fine.
Speaker:It cracked Adam in half.
Speaker:This war torn world was hard, but this was unfair.
Speaker:Mothers loved their cubs.
Speaker:They didn't do things like this.
Speaker:His mother wouldn't ever hurt a hair on his head.
Speaker:His family loved him
Speaker:and would always love him, no matter if he was big or small.
Speaker:It was only now that he realized that this was more for himself
Speaker:than it was for the wolf.
Speaker:But Liam was being strong for him.
Speaker:It wasn't fair, but if Adam couldn't be strong back,
Speaker:there'd be no one left to do that for the wolf cub.
Speaker:His head went back,
Speaker:letting the tears roll back into his eyes.
Speaker:Then he looked back to where they came from
Speaker:and patted the boy's shoulder.
Speaker:"It's fine," he lied back.
Speaker:There was no exchange shared between Liam and his mother.
Speaker:Their goodbyes were long ago,
Speaker:and probably even less pleasant than this had been.
Speaker:Just before Adam could turn the corner, the alpha let out a catcall whistle and asked with a chuckle, "That a
Speaker:thunderhoof rack? He do that or you?
Speaker:What you want for it?" Her words got chuckles from the rest of them.
Speaker:Liam looked to turn his gaze back, but Adam stopped him.
Speaker:He kept him moving forward, raising a paw over his shoulder.
Speaker:"Hey, Liam? You see that guy?"
Speaker:he asked, pointing to a teller.
Speaker:"Can you tell me how many pans they have for sale?
Speaker:Just focus on counting and
Speaker:don't look back." The wolf stepped forward, side-eyeing him all the way.
Speaker:As soon as Liam was a couple steps ahead of him,
Speaker:he rounded back to the alpha and shook his head,
Speaker:"Ain't for sale," and then unbuckled his belt.
Speaker:The pine marten swung around and bent over, dropping the back of his pants until it was practically down to the ground.
Speaker:He waggled his hips,
Speaker:letting his tail hang up high above his ass to ensure maximum visibility.
Speaker:"But you can all have this for free,"
Speaker:he called out, making sure they saw before he pulled his pants back up.
Speaker:The wolves roared back in curses,
Speaker:words that his mom would never let him say.
Speaker:He could hear some of the more aggressive pack members starting their way towards him.
Speaker:Quickly, he buckled his belt and put a paw to Liam's back.
Speaker:"Go, go, go!" he whispered,
Speaker:rushing the wolf forward.
Speaker:"I saw your butt," Liam said,
Speaker:turning his head up to look at him.
Speaker:There was a small smile curving his muzzle.
Speaker:Adam hissed, "I told you not to look,"
Speaker:while unable to hold back a grin.
Speaker:That night, they slept inside the settlement.
Speaker:Liam was softly snoring with his back sunk into Adam's chest.
Speaker:As the boy slept,
Speaker:the pine marten thought of what they'd been through to get here.
Speaker:He thought of the monsters of the daylight;
Speaker:the ones that roamed this post-apocalyptic wasteland.
Speaker:Some monsters had four legs and some had eight.
Speaker:Others stood upright and walked on two.
Speaker:Some monsters had big fangs and sharp claws.
Speaker:Others wore wicked smiles and dismissive faces.
Speaker:Some monsters were evil.
Speaker:Others, moreso. Adam wasn't going to let any of them hurt Liam ever again.
Speaker:He curled around the cub,
Speaker:promised that into his fur,
Speaker:and closed his eyes.
Speaker:They'd be heading home soon enough.
Speaker:And when Adam dreamt,
Speaker:it wasn't of his brothers and sisters.
Speaker:He couldn't see his mom and dad,
Speaker:though he understood they were always there for him.
Speaker:With their love in his heart,
Speaker:he dreamt of Liam.
Speaker:He dreamt of the adventures he would have with his new family.
Speaker:They left that next morning,
Speaker:mountains behind them,
Speaker:home ahead. This was the second and final part of
