On this episode Ted and Barb welcome Ryan Green. Ryan Green has been in the field of EHS for 15 years. He got his start as a wild land firefighter and deployed to some of Washington State’s largest forest fires. He joined the Active Duty United States Coast Guard in 2007. In 2010, he became a Coast Guard Corpsman, providing safety, medical and health services to thousands of military personnel across the country. He has been in the reserves since 2014. As a civilian, he led EHS consulting teams for hundreds of companies in diverse industries around the world. Additionally, he was the Director of Safety for one of Washington State’s largest Healthcare Systems at the epicenter of Covid-19. In July 2020, he moved to Cape Canaveral, Florida to lead teams of Safety and Quality professionals at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

Ryan shares from his personal experience, and he attributes his success in EHS career to military where he learned to pay attention to detail and how to control stressful situations, among other things. He encourages safety professionals to learn as much as they can from the vast experience and knowledge of the veterans of safety. According to Ryan, having experience, aptitude for problem solving, willingness to learn and ability to bring strong collaborative relationships are desirable qualities for safety professionals. Having a degree helps in making a decision between well-qualified candidates. But it is also important to learn and to continue to grow in their profession.
