We're featuring more science about edibles today.
First up is Analysis of homemade cannabis edibles by UHPLC-HRMS after standard addition method by Thiebot and others. This study analyzed homemade cannabis edibles using UHPLC-HRMS and a standard addition method to quantify delta nine THC, CBD, and their acid precursors. Significant concentrations of delta nine THC were identified in both edibles, even in one prepared with CBD herb. Highlights the need to analyze cannabis edibles and the materials used in their preparation, and proposes a reliable analytical method for toxicology laboratories.
Next up: Heating of consumer cannabis oils can lead to free radical initiated degradation, causing CBD and THC depletion by Tonoyan and others. This study investigated the effects of heating on the degradation of CBD and THC in commercial cannabis oils, finding that heating can lead to free radical-initiated degradation. Heating cannabis oils resulted in increased free radical concentrations and decreased levels of CBD and THC. The study used simulated aging conditions to assess the effects of heating on cannabis oils. The findings suggest that heating cannabis oils can impact the quality and potency of the products, which has implications for consumer safety and product quality control. The study did not assess the effects of different heating methods or temperatures on the degradation of CBD and THC.
The final article today is The effects of recreational cannabis legalization in Alberta on poison control centre calls and paediatric emergency department visits by Johnson and others. This study examined the impact of recreational cannabis legalization in Alberta, Canada on poison control center calls and pediatric emergency department visits. Cannabis edibles accounted for many of the ER visits. The study found an increase in cannabis-related presentations to pediatric emergency departments and calls to the provincial poison control center following legalization. The study used a retrospective observational design, analyzing data from the two major pediatric emergency departments and the provincial poison control center in Alberta before and after legalization. The findings suggest that legalization of recreational cannabis may lead to increased pediatric exposures, highlighting the need for public education and prevention strategies. The study was limited by its observational design and inability to determine causality.
