The fellas sit down with DeLisha Milton-Jones, Head Coach of Old Dominion Women's Basketball, to talk about a 3-0 conference start, what stats Coach looks first to in evaluating her team's defensive and offensive performance, and their next two opponents - Coastal Carolina and Marshall. Coach also answers what her ideal NIL deal would have been when she was playing in college.

Transcripts

Mike:

The following presentation is brought to you by the pride of ODU.

2

:

The official NIL collective

of Old Dominion Athletics.

3

:

Be a Monarchist.

4

:

Join the pride.

5

:

Monarch Nation, welcome back to

the Monarchist Basketball Show.

6

:

We are here with coach

DeLisha Milton Jones.

7

:

of the 11 and four Old Dominion

women's basketball team, uh,

8

:

off to an unbeaten three, no

unbeaten start in conference play.

9

:

But before we get to conference play, I

want to talk about this Virginia State

10

:

game just because it's so interesting.

11

:

I mean, you originally

had Delaware scheduled.

12

:

DeLisha: Yes.

13

:

Mike: They had to cancel late because of

injuries or players available to them.

14

:

DeLisha: Mm hmm.

15

:

Mike: I'm more interested

in the scheduling aspect.

16

:

How did you, how did you guys

manage to get this game so late

17

:

and add it onto the schedule?

18

:

DeLisha: Well, we had to scramble

around to see, um, who within close

19

:

proximity had openings on this schedule.

20

:

And we thought it was wise

to hit Virginia State.

21

:

I know Coach Nadine over there.

22

:

This is her second year there.

23

:

She had a long tenure at Rutgers

University, and we became friends

24

:

throughout the recruitment process.

25

:

And when she got the job there,

we always said that we would

26

:

look out for one another.

27

:

And so I thought she would

make good on that offer.

28

:

And she's.

29

:

change some things around for

us to be able to play them

30

:

here at ODU on our home court.

31

:

And we're very appreciative of those

efforts because had it not been for

32

:

her, we would not have had that game.

33

:

I also know that with Delaware, they're

just struggling with an injury bug.

34

:

They had five players available to play

and obviously you can't play a game.

35

:

You can play a game with that many,

but it wouldn't be fair, uh, based

36

:

off of the, you know, keeping with

the integrity of the game and making

37

:

sure that it's a fair competition

for both sides and even safe for your

38

:

players from an injury perspective.

39

:

And, uh, she was dealt a raw deal

that she's still struggling with.

40

:

I believe they've had

to postpone other games.

41

:

After hours, and we're looking to

reschedule with them for next season for

42

:

them to come out and we can make good on

that deal that we had initially with them.

43

:

Aaron: Okay, so after that,

that when you started the 1st

44

:

of 3 conference wins in a row.

45

:

The first one South Alabama kicks off

play you guys have a really fast start

46

:

to the first and third quarters 11

points going into the second quarter

47

:

and then going to the third quarter.

48

:

You got a 24 point lead.

49

:

Talk a little bit about that game.

50

:

DeLisha: Well, uh the South Alabama game

It was one we were biting at the bit to

51

:

be able to play opening up our conference

play against them Uh, Kelsey Thompson,

52

:

we acquired her via the transport

portal and she is a native of Alabama

53

:

You And she was a homegrown talent for

them that decided to set sail, bet on

54

:

herself and find something different.

55

:

So it was an emotional game for her, uh,

being able to play against her former

56

:

team, who she was the freshman of the

year within the conference with them.

57

:

And she really did a bulk of the

scoring for them even as a sophomore.

58

:

So going into that game, we were

energized and ready to play for her.

59

:

We want it to come away, not

just for a great conference win

60

:

for ourselves, but for Kelsey.

61

:

And we wanted to set sail on something

amazing for our season, uh, for the 24

62

:

25 season in the Sun Belt Conference

by getting that first coveted win

63

:

to get a taste of victory so that

we can continue our forward progress

64

:

towards winning a championship.

65

:

Mike: Alright, following up South Alabama.

66

:

Yes.

67

:

You took a road trip to

Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

68

:

Southern Miss and you guys took over

early and never really looked back.

69

:

I'm most interested in with

Southern Miss and ULM, they have

70

:

almost the exact same stadium

71

:

DeLisha: set up, but

72

:

Mike: they also have similar fan

support for women's basketball,

73

:

DeLisha: and I'm

74

:

Mike: wondering with.

75

:

A cavernous stadium like that where

the crowd is already kind of far

76

:

away from you because it's rounded?

77

:

DeLisha: Yeah.

78

:

Mike: How different is that playing

in that type of environment versus

79

:

playing somewhere like Chartway?

80

:

DeLisha: Well, there are pros and cons.

81

:

The pros is that their fans

won't be right on top of you.

82

:

And normally your opposing team will

put their band or the cheerleaders,

83

:

you know, or their pep squad right next

adjacent to your bench so that it would

84

:

be loud and they would be obnoxious

and just constantly in your ear.

85

:

So that was a benefit of that.

86

:

But the, um, other, um, cons I would

say is that it sucks that those programs

87

:

don't get the support that women's

basketball deserves because they play,

88

:

their teams play hard and they have good

products that they put out on the floor.

89

:

And it's important for their

community, their sporting

90

:

community to come out and support.

91

:

There's a tremendous movement

behind women's basketball now.

92

:

So why not dig your heels in and be a

part of everything good that is happening.

93

:

I felt that although Their fans

didn't come out in support.

94

:

They had a faithful few, but we had

a lot of friends and family of our

95

:

players that came out by the droves and

they filled the stands and it was very

96

:

supportive and an energetic atmosphere

for ODU while we were on the road

97

:

Aaron: and then immediately you

take the second game in that Monroe.

98

:

Now that's this game's closer.

99

:

Pretty much throughout.

100

:

Obviously they called

back in the end and Mhm.

101

:

three three pointers within a

really short period of time.

102

:

DeLisha: Yes, kind

103

:

Aaron: of for them to keep it in.

104

:

But then clutch end of game free throw

shooting by En'Dya, Simone, and Kelsey.

105

:

What did you feel that

the players come on?

106

:

How were they feeling on the bench

there towards the end as things were

107

:

kind of, you know, touch and go.

108

:

DeLisha: Well, I think we all were

calm and we understand clearly

109

:

that the game is filled with runs.

110

:

And you try to, you try your best to

minimize how long a team goes on a run.

111

:

And we knew that they were a high

powered offensive team, especially

112

:

beyond the three point line.

113

:

And they started to hit some,

throw some Hail Marys out there

114

:

and they connected on a few.

115

:

Uh, we still weren't nervous

because we knew that a lot of

116

:

those things were in our control.

117

:

We made some defensive

mistakes late in the game.

118

:

Thankfully, thankfully enough, we had

a consider a considerate, uh, lead.

119

:

And it was able to kind of buffer us

within the choppy waters that we were in

120

:

in those late moments within the game.

121

:

Nya Valentine did what Nya Valentine does.

122

:

She lives for the big

shot in the big moments.

123

:

Um, Meloney Thames, she found the rim

as well in the clutch moments for them.

124

:

Yet and still clutch free throw shooting

on our behalf allowed us to be on the

125

:

sidelines in a celebratory pattern and,

um, not nervous or shaken by the moment,

126

:

understanding clearly that if we make

the proper adjustments, we will still

127

:

be fine because we had good control

of the game for the duration of it.

128

:

Mike: Now we know this is a defensive

first team because they're coached by you.

129

:

When you are evaluating the games,

what is the first stat you go to to

130

:

judge how well you played defensively?

131

:

DeLisha: Uh, the first step that I'm

always looking at is, um, um, our

132

:

rebounding, you know, because anything

that we do on the defensive end,

133

:

um, that's, that's definitely going

to, well, not necessarily rebound.

134

:

And I'm sorry, the three point

line, I have to make sure that we've

135

:

taken away the three point line.

136

:

If we've done that, then

we've given ourselves a great

137

:

chance at winning a ball game.

138

:

If you're going to allow everyone

to play within the trends.

139

:

Of the game nowadays, it's shoot

threes, space the floor out,

140

:

shoot threes and get layups.

141

:

Uh, so we design our defense, um,

everything that I've put into play for

142

:

our program has been based off of us

eliminating the trends, eliminating

143

:

all the things that teams like to do.

144

:

And we want to take those away to

try our best to dictate the type of

145

:

shots that we do allow them to take.

146

:

So we load up help side.

147

:

We load up gaps.

148

:

Um, to make people take contested jump

shots and if they happen to get to

149

:

the room, we'll meet you there either

either in the air or to take charges.

150

:

Um, if you do take a three, it's going

to have to be one under duress, late

151

:

shot clock, and hopefully the ball

is in hands of individuals that we

152

:

would prefer it to be in and not the

ones that can really get the job done.

153

:

So the first step would definitely

be the three point line.

154

:

The second one would be how well

are we defending without fouling?

155

:

Are we keeping our opponents out

of the bonus and getting these free

156

:

looks at the rim with five minutes?

157

:

home left in the quarter.

158

:

Or are we are we fouling them at a high

rate to where they're penalizing us and

159

:

punishing us by getting free points for

that duration of time within a quarter.

160

:

When we're doing those things,

then every night that we suit up

161

:

ODU women's basketball can crown

themselves a winner for that battle.

162

:

Aaron: So before we get the coastal,

I kind of a tangential question.

163

:

Off of what Mike just asked.

164

:

So the three pointers been

around since what, 40 plus years,

165

:

like the late 70s, early 80s.

166

:

At what, at what point though, did

coaching really have to change to like

167

:

what you're talking about of the game

becoming a three pointer, three points

168

:

in layups or three points in dunks?

169

:

Like, even though it came around like that

long ago, the game didn't turn that fast.

170

:

DeLisha: Right, right.

171

:

But you saw the trends of it.

172

:

I think everything happens within

how the NBA game changes when you

173

:

started to see more threes being put

up and they spaced the floor out.

174

:

People became positionless or there

were hybrid players all over the floor.

175

:

Then, uh, defense no longer was sexy.

176

:

Defense was no longer the thing

that would really reinforce a win.

177

:

Or even a championship for your team.

178

:

Everyone polarized their viewpoints

on the offensive end of the game.

179

:

Now, all kids that were watching

coaches that were watching trainers

180

:

that were watching, they would be in

the gym, trying to create all these

181

:

hybrid players that didn't really have

a position, everyone handling the ball

182

:

and everyone shooting the deep three.

183

:

Everyone wanted to be Steph

Curry, KD, James Harden, uh,

184

:

Ray Allen, uh, to name a few.

185

:

And then you started to see the

needle move towards those type

186

:

of trends, uh, because you could

put more points on the board.

187

:

It was more attractive

and exciting for the fans.

188

:

And now more people are buying

tickets, having butts in seats,

189

:

cheering on because they want to

see more offense being played.

190

:

So I think it was then when those

movements were made based off of how the

191

:

NBA, you know, Kind of shifted towards how

they wanted to sell tickets and get more

192

:

fans involved and excited about the games.

193

:

Now on the collegiate

ranks, you see that change.

194

:

The players come in, they're skilled up.

195

:

You guys, they have tremendous skills

and they can shoot the ball, but

196

:

not many of them know how to play

the game and play the game with

197

:

four other people on the court.

198

:

And not just depending on

their individualized talents.

199

:

How can you work your talents within

what the coach has woven into the fabric

200

:

of her system and philosophy for your

best to shine through while you're still

201

:

working for the greater good of the team?

202

:

Mike: No, analytically, it makes sense.

203

:

And mathematically, it makes sense

why people like shooting threes.

204

:

Okay.

205

:

You hit three threes in 10 shots.

206

:

You got nine points.

207

:

Mm hmm.

208

:

You're going to need to shoot over 50%.

209

:

We're close to 50 percent on those 10

shots from two to equal that or pass it.

210

:

It's true.

211

:

It's just percentage wise.

212

:

It it's a higher percentage shot, right?

213

:

Yes.

214

:

That's why it's layups or threes

because the layup is going to give

215

:

a much higher percentage shot.

216

:

Now I asked you that question about

how you evaluate your, your defense.

217

:

DeLisha: Okay.

218

:

Mike: There's a lot of statistics

you can look at, but what is your

219

:

first, most important stat for you?

220

:

DeLisha: Offensively

221

:

Mike: to evaluate.

222

:

Yes,

223

:

DeLisha: it would have to be, um, our

assist, our assist and then how our assist

224

:

means how well are we moving the ball?

225

:

Are we moving the ball?

226

:

And are we moving bodies?

227

:

If you can move the ball and

you can move bodies and you can

228

:

get Wide open uncontested shots.

229

:

That's our goal.

230

:

Whether it's a three point shot, a mid

range shot via off the bounce or catching

231

:

shoot or anything within the paint via,

uh, driving to the rim front by guards or

232

:

bigs or post posting up around the rim.

233

:

Uh, if the ball is moving and bodies are

moving, then the ball will find the open

234

:

player and you will get uncontested looks.

235

:

Whether, um, there are lesser percentage

shot like the three or a higher percentage

236

:

shot like the layup around the rim.

237

:

So the assist will tell me if the ball is

really moving at the rate that it should.

238

:

And once I look at that, then I look

at our ability to score in transition.

239

:

Are we getting the looks and the points

that our defense should be generating for

240

:

us based off of us giving our opponents?

241

:

One attempt and an opportunity to score.

242

:

And if we're doing that, then we can

rebound the ball, get out and run.

243

:

And now that will allow not just

the offensive side of the ball to

244

:

produce offense, but our defense

will take the brunt of that as well.

245

:

Aaron: That's a great segue.

246

:

All right.

247

:

So tomorrow, Coastal

Carolina is coming in.

248

:

They're 11 and

249

:

DeLisha: 2.

250

:

Yeah.

251

:

Aaron: 7 0 home, 4 2 on the road.

252

:

DeLisha: Losses

253

:

Aaron: to NC State.

254

:

Very good NC State squad that

you guys have obviously played.

255

:

And in conference opponent in Troy,

256

:

Mike: you

257

:

Aaron: were just talking about assist

and you were talking about some other

258

:

items, assist coastal, they have over

15 assists a game, uh, more than two

259

:

a game more than their opponents.

260

:

So obviously that'll be an interesting

one, uh, to watch, but in talking about

261

:

transition and getting easy baskets.

262

:

They're getting, uh, 13 steals a game,

which is six more than their opponents.

263

:

So obviously that's something

that they want to do.

264

:

Talk to us a little bit about Coastal and

what Monarch fans should be watching out

265

:

for tomorrow when they go to Chartway.

266

:

DeLisha: Uh, Coastal, they,

they revamped everything.

267

:

They revamped their offensive system.

268

:

They have a very good coach in Kevin.

269

:

And, um, I think they have

an influx of new players and

270

:

they've adopted the system.

271

:

They, they look very similar to Marshall

who won the conference last year

272

:

where they platoon sub, um, they're

shooting a high amount of three point

273

:

shots within the game, whether it's in

the half court or within transition.

274

:

And they're trying to speed the game up

by randomly trapping you in a full court.

275

:

three quarter court or the half court.

276

:

So they're going to, they're producing

a type of energy surrounding the

277

:

game to where they're banking on the

fact that if we make you play faster,

278

:

we'll turn you over in hopes of us

getting easier opportunities for

279

:

ourself at the rim or within the three

point shots that they want to take.

280

:

We can expect them to come out

and play an aggressive style

281

:

offensively and defensively.

282

:

So it's going to take a matter of poise.

283

:

And posture and positioning the three

P's boys, posture and positioning.

284

:

When you're playing a team like

that, if you allow their full

285

:

court press to speed you up, then

something bad is going to happen.

286

:

If you allow their traps in the half

court that may come randomly, whether

287

:

it's guard to guard, it will seem guard to

guard because they will even put a guard.

288

:

like player at the four spot for

them, which allows them to cover more

289

:

space, do more things defensively.

290

:

If you allow all of that to speed you

up, then it's only going to create

291

:

fast break opportunities for them.

292

:

So for us to walk away with the wind,

we have to be there on the catch.

293

:

limit their opportunities to be able

to see the rim and keep a high hand

294

:

of contest up because they'll pull

it because they're accustomed to it.

295

:

They all have that freedom and that green

light to do so and that's their system.

296

:

So if they're not taking those shots,

then now that means we're running

297

:

them off the three point line.

298

:

So how good is our second line of defense

in terms of being in the gaps and making

299

:

them take pull up jump shots or making an

extra pass and now we can Um, we can move

300

:

with the flight and speed of the ball, be

there on the catch to take away these easy

301

:

opportunities for them in hopes of them

missing so that we can get the rebound.

302

:

And now we can give them a taste of their

own medicine in terms of how aggressively

303

:

we push the ball in transition.

304

:

Mike: All right, so this is, that's

the first of two home games this week.

305

:

And if you're trying to pick one

game to go to, I think tomorrow

306

:

night's game is the one to go to

because Both teams are having very,

307

:

very fantastic starts to the season.

308

:

It's a pretty much a top 100 matchup.

309

:

It's going to be a good game.

310

:

Saturday though, we face Marshall.

311

:

They are, uh, they have

a new coaching staff.

312

:

Kim Caldwell parlayed her success

into the job at Tennessee.

313

:

Yes.

314

:

And the new coaching staff,

um, we wish them luck, but

315

:

they are struggling right now.

316

:

They're five and nine on the season.

317

:

Oh, and three in conference.

318

:

Yeah.

319

:

What can you tell us about

this new look, uh, her,

320

:

DeLisha: uh, the new look, her, they have

some similarities to the old Marshall

321

:

team, but when you have a new coach

and you're coming into a conference

322

:

that is tough, you got seasoned vets

as coaches and you have, uh, seasoned

323

:

mature players, uh, on, on the team.

324

:

All of these rosters, you're, you're

going to have to take your bumps and

325

:

bruises before you kind of figure things

out and really get your team going.

326

:

The non conference schedule is supposed

to be designed in a way where you

327

:

can ready your squad for anything

that's to come within conference

328

:

play with her being a new coach.

329

:

The schedule already being

set, there was a lot of things

330

:

that were out of her control.

331

:

So I think in her position, she's

probably just trying to make sure that

332

:

on a daily basis they are building for

the now and for the future in hopes

333

:

of them gelling together so that they

can make a run in the most important

334

:

moments towards the end of the year.

335

:

Everyone gets to go to

the conference tournament.

336

:

So whether you're in that bottom group

and you have to play five games to get

337

:

to the championship game or you're in

that top two where you only have to

338

:

play two to get to, um, to, to be able

to go dancing within the tournament.

339

:

You're going to fight for whatever

you can within, um, whatever

340

:

points you're at in the season.

341

:

Aaron: All right.

342

:

I think everybody needs to get

out the chart way this week.

343

:

There are two opportunities.

344

:

You just heard about it.

345

:

But before I let Mike close this out,

I want to ask you one fun question,

346

:

coach, because we talk about NIL so

much, and obviously this show is,

347

:

, made available by the Pride of ODU

back when you were playing college.

348

:

Mike: Obviously,

349

:

Aaron: NIL wasn't a thing

when we were all in school,

350

:

Mike: but

351

:

Aaron: if it was, what would you,

what, what company or what product,

352

:

what would have been the ideal fit?

353

:

NIL partnership for DeLisha.

354

:

DeLisha: That's a good question.

355

:

Wow.

356

:

Let's see.

357

:

Oh,

358

:

that's a good one.

359

:

I ate like a football player.

360

:

So any company that sold food of

any manner, they could have named

361

:

a sandwich or something after me.

362

:

We could have made some money

off of something like that.

363

:

With that defense,

364

:

Aaron: it could have been some sort

of a smash sandwich probably, right?

365

:

DeLisha: You know, something like that.

366

:

I don't know.

367

:

You know, I could have, you know,

Uh, got to deal with Ace Hardware or

368

:

something like that because, you know,

I put on my, my, my, I put on the blue

369

:

collar hat, you know, to go to work

every single day and I grinded it out.

370

:

I didn't really have a tremendous

skill set going in outside of being

371

:

able to play hard and run the floor

hard and rebound like the Dickens.

372

:

Um, I did all the tough stuff.

373

:

So hardware store could have

shown me some love and we could

374

:

have done some things, you know,

375

:

Mike: That's a good, uh, selling point.

376

:

We have some hard playing

defenders on this team.

377

:

So if you are a business owner,

especially a hardware business

378

:

owner, reach out to The Pride of

ODU and coach DeLisha Milton- Jones.

379

:

DeLisha: Yes.

380

:

Or we can have the Pentagon, the

Pentagon's up the street, you know,

381

:

that's the best defense in the world.

382

:

Right?

383

:

Yeah.

384

:

Well, there are

385

:

Mike: three other college NIL programs

and Navy, Air Force, and the Army.

386

:

Yeah.

387

:

so much for joining us.

388

:

Get out to Chartway Arena to

cheer on these ladies this week.

389

:

Uh, we can't wait to talk again.

390

:

Go Monarchs.

391

:

DeLisha: Awesome.

392

:

Thank you guys so much.

393

:

Mike: Go Monarchs.
