Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about Pique Life's BT Fountain Beauty Electrolytes and RE Fountain Calming Electrolytes. These two trendy hydration products come with big promises, big-name endorsements, and a price tag to match. The BT Fountain claims to support youthful skin and healthy aging with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and phytoceramides. At the same time, the RE Fountain promises rest, recovery, and cognitive support through a triple-magnesium blend. Sounds impressive, right? But are the doses actually therapeutic, or are the marketing claims writing checks the ingredients can't cash? Jenn takes a close look at every ingredient, every milligram, and every dollar to answer the question one listener really wanted answered: are these packets a legitimate micronutrient tool, or just a glorified, expensive Crystal Light? Like what you're hearing? Be sure to check out the full-length episodes of new releases every Wednesday. Have an idea for a nutrition nugget? [00:00:29] So this one came to us from Blair H. So by the way, before I read Blair's message, if you have an idea for an episode or a nutrition nugget, send it in. Our members requests, members of the Happy Healthy Hub, their requests and suggestions get moved to the top of the pile. So if you want to wait a short amount of time, be sure you're a member of the Happy Healthy Hub.
[:[00:01:12] Well, thank you, Blair. Okay. She said, "Peak Life at peaklife.com. I love the Sun Goddess Matcha, so please don't tell me anything bad about it. It's my every morning warm start my day with an ah first sip." I love it. She said, "I'm also enjoying the Nondgha as a cocoa treat that's not sugar. What I'm curious about though is the BT Fountain and RE Fountain products.
[:[00:02:01] Hope this is something you're interested in looking into as well. Thanks again for your amazing podcast and book. Blair." Well, Blair, thank you for listening, for reading, and submitting this one, and I'm actually surprised that this is the first time we're talking about Peak Life. And admittedly, I don't know everything about them, but I have seen their products promoted a lot on social media.
[:[00:02:45] Then they give the founder's story. So his name is Simon Chang, originally from Hong Kong, where longevity and health span are some of the highest in the world, and they focus on food and medicinal plants. So then he moves to [00:03:00] the US as a teen. Stress took over. He got further and further away from the way he'd grown up.
[:[00:03:36] So he traveled the world to heal himself, and then Peak came from everything he learned for his own healing. As he says, and I'm quoting, "With the loving intent to help you unlock your body's intrinsic ability to heal itself." Now, I'm a big fan of that. I think his story is incredible, and you know, like I said, I think they have a lot of press, a lot of big names [00:04:00] endorsing them like Mark Hyman and Kelly LeVeque and Will Cole, and I am hopeful that their products are the real deal, so let's see.
[:[00:04:37] So by the way, Blair, you are right on the price. It's 28 packets for $68. So that comes to like $2.42, $2.43 each. And then if you put it on subscription, you save $10, so it brings it down to like $2.07 each, which it's not terrible, but also not [00:05:00] great if they're telling you, you know, multiple packets per day, right?
[:[00:05:36] And then the ingredient list says calcium, and then they sort of give the sources. So calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium- Phytoceramides, and here it specifies further non-GMO wheat seed extract, sodium hyaluronate, which is essentially like a hyaluronic acid. Then it says coconut water powder, Himalayan pink salt, silica, [00:06:00] citric acid, organic yuzu raspberry flavor, beetroot juice powder, and monk fruit extract So I kinda wish it was like twice the amount of magnesium that they have.
[:[00:06:44] So I don't know that it's really doing that much. On the sodium, I wish the sodium source was like a mineral rich salt, and the ingredients mention Himalayan pink salt, but like way down on the list. So it makes me [00:07:00] think that maybe that part is there for flavor. I don't know. I think the other sodium that's toward the top is there for the electrolyte sodium, which it's just interesting to me, like if it is pink salt, that they wouldn't mention it.
[:[00:07:57] And we've talked about this when we've talked about other electrolytes, [00:08:00] but there are other ways to get that uptake without an insulin response. We don't know 100% that that's what's happening here, but I think it's just something I'm noticing. The doses that I don't love may be low because as Blair mentioned, they're telling you to take this multiple times a day or complement it with their other hydration product.
[:[00:08:42] They say it calms the nervous system and the brain for rest and recovery in the evening, boosts cognitive performance, memory, and focus in the morning. Refreshing lemongrass, lemon taste made using only dehydrated lemon juice and lemongrass powder. The cleanest electrolyte on the market, free of artificial or [00:09:00] natural flavoring.
[:[00:09:33] And I mention this in the book, so Blair, maybe you've noticed this, but you are spot on to ask this question. So anyway, looking at the label, it says 30 milligrams of calcium malate, 100 milligrams of the magnesium. This is that combination of L-threonate, glycinate, and taurate, which I like it, and they have a solid dose here.
[:[00:10:26] So it's kind of the same thing here with the monk fruit extract as the sweetener. I like that this one is using pink Himalayan salt. I like that this one is using the lemon flavor, because that can help induce the uptake. I like that we have-- I'm mentioning it again, the pink Himalayan salt. Like, here they're mentioning it.
[:[00:11:05] So I'm assuming that it's for flavor, because if you were looking for the calming impact of lemongrass, like the lemongrass powder, the doses that I saw in research were like one to three grams per day, and this is 25 milligrams. So I don't think we're getting calming benefit from this ingredient. I think the magnesium is doing the heavy lifting here for the relaxation and the calming.
[:[00:11:56] If we go back to Blair's initial question of are the [00:12:00] BT and RE Fountains a tool for micronutrition or a glorified expensive Crystal Light packet? I think the reality is somewhere in the middle, which is, I know, it's so not interesting of an answer, but the reality is I think it's not nothing, and yet I think you could find the same or better ingredients and spend less.
[:[00:12:35] less interesting and of a lower quality than these. I also think we could find things that are a better combination of price and quality together.
