We hear about scams often. But, not often enough since they keep happening and consumers continue to be victimized by creative & convincing scammers. On today's podcast, we learn from a fraud-fighter on the front lines, who often speaks to victims of scam/consumer-targeted fraud.
Shannon Slaughter is the enterprise fraud manager at Merit Trust Credit Union, a member-focused financial institution based in Kansas, US. In the last several months, most likely due to the financial hardships caused by the impacts of Covid-19, she's seen a sharp increase in consumers falling victim to creative scams. Because there's little that a consumer can do after losing money to a fraudster over the phone or email, Shannon has become passionate about educating others about these threats to consumers financially.
In this episode, she'll discuss why fraudsters are impersonating fraud teams for well-known companies, how they're targeting unassuming mules for unemployment and PPP fraud (in the US), and unique details about scam calls targeting consumers to get them to purchase large dollar amounts of gift cards to "pay off a debt to the government".
