Speaker:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: The mission is basically

Speaker:

neighbors helping neighbors.

Speaker:

I grew up in the seventies and eighties and I grew up in a small town that,

Speaker:

Everybody knew everybody's name.

Speaker:

Today you can go live your whole life next to your neighbor

Speaker:

and not even know his name.

Speaker:

I wanted to get back to them roots where people are helping

Speaker:

people and generally are good.

Speaker:

People generally are good.

Speaker:

But you just gotta give 'em an outlet to be able to show that goodness.

Cliff Duvernois:

Hello everyone.

Cliff Duvernois:

Welcome back to Ordinary People, Extraordinary Things.

Cliff Duvernois:

I'm your host, Cliff DuVernois.

Cliff Duvernois:

Today is gonna be a little bit of a departure from our normal guest.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we're definitely gonna be talking with a nonprofit today.

Cliff Duvernois:

But this individual had a moment of inspiration that has literally allowed him

Cliff Duvernois:

to be able to impact thousands of people.

Cliff Duvernois:

And when I heard his story I was like, I gotta get him onto the show.

Cliff Duvernois:

Ladies and gentlemen, let me bring to you the founder of Yooper Do-Gooders.

Cliff Duvernois:

And that would be Dean O'Brien.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean, how are you?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: I am doing well, Cliff.

Cliff Duvernois:

Thank you.

Cliff Duvernois:

So Dean, tell us a little bit about where you're

Cliff Duvernois:

from and where you grew up.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: I grew up in a little town

Cliff Duvernois:

called Wyandot, south of Detroit.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I moved to the UP 22 years ago.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I make my home there.

Cliff Duvernois:

It was my mother's childhood home.

Cliff Duvernois:

It's been in my family over a hundred years.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, did your mother move down to south of Detroit and that's where

Cliff Duvernois:

you originally born, or how did that work?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yep.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

She, uh, married my father.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And my father was from the Detroit area.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

He worked for Ford Motor Company.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And my mom went to St.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Ignace schools.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And went up to the Sault St.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Marie when she graduated in 1951 and met my father.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

He was stationed after the Korean War at the Soo Locks.

Cliff Duvernois:

When you said that you moved up there about 22 years ago, what is

Cliff Duvernois:

it about the up that's keeping you there?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: It was always a second home to me,

Cliff Duvernois:

and I raised my three boys there.

Cliff Duvernois:

I got, I got custody of my three boys back in 2008.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I just wanted to get 'em out of, the Detroit area.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we brought, I just brought 'em up here and we raised 'em.

Cliff Duvernois:

They all graduated from St.

Cliff Duvernois:

Ignace schools and they're all doing very well in life.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, after high school is over, what did you do from there?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Construction and maintenance.

Cliff Duvernois:

That's pretty much been my whole life.

Cliff Duvernois:

Construction and maintenance.

Cliff Duvernois:

Is there something in particular about

Cliff Duvernois:

construction and maintenance that attracted you to that field?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yeah.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Something different every day.

Cliff Duvernois:

That is absolutely true.

Cliff Duvernois:

100%.

Cliff Duvernois:

Okay, so you've been doing construction for a number of years now.

Cliff Duvernois:

What I wanna do is I wanna start to talk to you about the Yooper Do-gooders.

Cliff Duvernois:

So talk to us about how the idea first came about.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

A couple years back, and this is one

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

of the miracles you asked me about, a couple days ago, but about about five

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

years ago, two years before Yooper Do gooders started, I was praying

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

to the Lord about helping people.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I wanted to help people.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I didn't know how to go about doing it.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

But I wanted to help people.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So I went down to the Evergreen Living Center, which is a senior home.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And I filled out an application, a background check and stuff like that

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

to go and help play cards, do whatever.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Just spend an hour a week.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I was just looking at an hour a week to go there and just play cards

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

with the elderly and just hang out and, sp share some time with them.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And I was denied because I have a little bit of a background.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I played hockey my whole life and I was a fighter in hockey,

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

so carried over into real life.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So I got in a little trouble long time ago.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And it stuck with me.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And so they told me, I, they, that they couldn't accept my application

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

and that, because of my background, they were really wouldn't let me in.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So I said, okay.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And then, two years went by and on February 23rd, 2020, I literally had

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

been praying for two years about this.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Woke up on that Sunday morning.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

It was a Sunday, and literally within 10 minutes the Facebook page was made.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

All the rules were on it.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

It was that quick.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And it took off so fast that I had, I think I had a thousand

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

members within two months.

Cliff Duvernois:

Okay, so let's go back a little bit and start

Cliff Duvernois:

to unpack some of these things.

Cliff Duvernois:

So you were talking about this, basically this two year journey of yours.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, first off, why did you feel this need to try to help other people?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: I, I just think it's instilled

Cliff Duvernois:

from my mother and father.

Cliff Duvernois:

My mother, father, my mother and father were both that way.

Cliff Duvernois:

They both were people that helped other people.

Cliff Duvernois:

My mother majorly.

Cliff Duvernois:

And my dad too.

Cliff Duvernois:

My dad was a member of the moose and bought kids bikes every year.

Cliff Duvernois:

And he just, it was just something that that was, that, they both did and

Cliff Duvernois:

I think it just carried over into me.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now you talk about creating this Facebook

Cliff Duvernois:

group, and the name of the Facebook group is the Yooper Do Gooders.

Cliff Duvernois:

So when you get the idea for this Facebook page, you signed up for all

Cliff Duvernois:

these Facebook marketing classes, these Facebook groups, management classes

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yes.

Cliff Duvernois:

you did.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yeah.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Oh yeah.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I signed up for all that stuff and, to help me to go through

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

and do the things that I'm doing.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And we're unique because we do everything.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We don't, we don't concentrate on gas cards, we don't concentrate on food.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We don't concentrate on fixing people's homes.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I do it all.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Every bit of it.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now when you talk about creating your Facebook group

Cliff Duvernois:

and then within a span of two months, you already have a thousand members.

Cliff Duvernois:

How did you initially start to get the word out about this Facebook group?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Just my friends in general, my

Cliff Duvernois:

friends that are on my Facebook page.

Cliff Duvernois:

I literally just invited every single one of my friends.

Cliff Duvernois:

I have friends in both places.

Cliff Duvernois:

I have friends in St Ignace and down in Wyandott.

Cliff Duvernois:

So it spread rather quickly because of them.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, why don't you talk to us about the

Cliff Duvernois:

mission of Yooper Do-gooders.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: The mission is basically

Cliff Duvernois:

neighbors helping neighbors.

Cliff Duvernois:

I grew up in the seventies and eighties and I grew up in a small

Cliff Duvernois:

town that, it didn't go, it wasn't unheard of to, for your neighbor.

Cliff Duvernois:

Everybody knew everybody's name.

Cliff Duvernois:

Today you can go live your whole life next to your neighbor

Cliff Duvernois:

and not even know his name.

Cliff Duvernois:

I wanted to get back to them roots where people are helping

Cliff Duvernois:

people and generally are good.

Cliff Duvernois:

People generally are good.

Cliff Duvernois:

But you just gotta give 'em an outlet to be able to show that goodness.

Cliff Duvernois:

And this has given people an outlet to feel secure about helping somebody

Cliff Duvernois:

without the thought of getting ripped off or being taken advantage

Cliff Duvernois:

of or any of that kind of stuff.

Cliff Duvernois:

One of the things that really attracted me to your story

Cliff Duvernois:

was when I first got accepted into the Yooper DO-gooders group, and someone

Cliff Duvernois:

had posted on there that they had this specific kind of baby formula

Cliff Duvernois:

for babies with sensitive stomachs.

Cliff Duvernois:

And you could just have it.

Cliff Duvernois:

You just have to come pick it up and all these people down below

Cliff Duvernois:

were saying, oh, I need this.

Cliff Duvernois:

Is it still available?

Cliff Duvernois:

I was blown away by that because usually when I'm thinking of

Cliff Duvernois:

something for to help people.

Cliff Duvernois:

It's oh, do you know of a, a job that I could apply for whatever

Cliff Duvernois:

it is, but this is actually people making contact with each other.

Cliff Duvernois:

This is people looking for couches and, for food.

Cliff Duvernois:

I saw somebody this morning was asking, Hey, could, does somebody have

Cliff Duvernois:

a dozen eggs that I can use to feed my boys for the rest of the month?

Cliff Duvernois:

This is real stuff.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Oh, it totally is.

Cliff Duvernois:

And that is the part of it that I love the most is when I, I don't

Cliff Duvernois:

always see everything on the Facebook page cuz I work a normal job too.

Cliff Duvernois:

But there's times where I'll go on there and I'll see somebody ask for

Cliff Duvernois:

something and I look down and their, 25, 30 comments and all of 'em are

Cliff Duvernois:

just trying to help the person.

Cliff Duvernois:

And whether it's, it's pointing them in the right direction to get the help.

Cliff Duvernois:

Or helping them themselves.

Cliff Duvernois:

And that to me is just, I don't know, it just warms my heart that

Cliff Duvernois:

it's brought in so many people out to be the neighborly, person or

Cliff Duvernois:

neighborly way of going about doing it.

Cliff Duvernois:

What I'd like to do is I would like to explore a

Cliff Duvernois:

little bit, cuz you mentioned before about, signing up for these Facebook

Cliff Duvernois:

group classes or whatever it is.

Cliff Duvernois:

What is some of the, what are some of the lessons that you've learned

Cliff Duvernois:

that you feel really helped you to get this launched and start to see

Cliff Duvernois:

all this real success real fast.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I can tell you the, probably the one

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

thing that I've, in the last three years of my life, what I've become

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

good at is whether to find out whether somebody's scamming us or not.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

That didn't come from Facebook.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

That came from the d h s ladies, d h S ladies.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

They're the ones that kind of walked me through that and said,

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

since you're gonna be doing this and we're gonna be helping you.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Cause I've even helped them.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

They've called me in the middle of the night and said, Hey,

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

we need food for some lady.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We can't get into the office.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We, will you hook her up.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I hook her up with some food.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

But anyhow, To be able to ask the questions without actually upsetting

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

somebody and finding out whether they're actually telling the truth or

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

not is probably one of the highlights of the things I do believe it.

Cliff Duvernois:

All right.

Cliff Duvernois:

So walk us a little bit through what that looks like.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

First of all, whatever their problem is, then

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

you just start asking little, small, simple questions like you're trying

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

to find out information about it.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And then they stumble on themselves.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

It's pretty easy actually.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I'm really surprised that I hooked onto that that quick because some

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

of my administrators will send me a, Hey, this girl's asking for

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

this, and then I go on and I'll.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

they'll send it to me and I'll just start talking to her and, just the

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

conversation alone, I can figure out whether they're for real or not.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And don't let me, don't let me make it sound like there's a lot of that.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Because to be honest, that doesn't happen often in this group.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

This group is pretty wholesome people.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Even the people ask for help and the people helping.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

very wholesome group.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I don't run into a lot of people scamming at all.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, when you first launched the Facebook group, was

Cliff Duvernois:

it just you that was moderating it?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yes, I ran it for the first two years by myself,

Cliff Duvernois:

Oh, that is incredible.

Cliff Duvernois:

So you said you made it

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: not really by myself, because the

Cliff Duvernois:

members are the core of the group.

Cliff Duvernois:

They are really the ones that run it.

Cliff Duvernois:

The Lord is the one that really runs it.

Cliff Duvernois:

Let me be honest there.

Cliff Duvernois:

But he's the one that brings me all the people that I need and

Cliff Duvernois:

puts the people on my path to advance and to continue to grow.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I imagine too, that also your members can help with

Cliff Duvernois:

some of the policing that's going on

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: And they do.

Cliff Duvernois:

Yes, they do.

Cliff Duvernois:

They, they'll, if they think somebody's doing something wrong, they'll

Cliff Duvernois:

contact me in a private message.

Cliff Duvernois:

And that's another thing.

Cliff Duvernois:

We don't allow people to attack other people on the page.

Cliff Duvernois:

We watch that very carefully.

Cliff Duvernois:

We would rather you contact us and let us handle the situation than

Cliff Duvernois:

having a bunch of bickering, like half the other Facebook groups and

Cliff Duvernois:

all the bickering goes on in that.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we don't allow swearing.

Cliff Duvernois:

We don't allow any of that kind of stuff on our page.

Cliff Duvernois:

Well, kudos to you for the policing part because I can imagine

Cliff Duvernois:

for some people it's hard enough to ask for help, let alone ask for help.

Cliff Duvernois:

You genuinely need it, and all of a sudden you have 50 people

Cliff Duvernois:

that are passing judgment on you.

Cliff Duvernois:

saying things like, oh, you should, just get a job or get a better job, or,

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And we have that sometimes, but we get

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

right on it right away and I just, I'll, I, the first time I'll just

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

private message him and say, Hey, look, that's not what this page is about.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

If you don't have anything nice to say or are helpful, then please don't comment.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Just scroll past it.

Cliff Duvernois:

Because I think a lot of people forget that we don't

Cliff Duvernois:

know who that other person is.

Cliff Duvernois:

We haven't walked in their shoes.

Cliff Duvernois:

We don't understand their situation.

Cliff Duvernois:

So for them just to reach out and say, Hey, I need baby formula.

Cliff Duvernois:

this lady said, Hey, I just need a dozen eggs to help feed my

Cliff Duvernois:

kids for the rest of the month.

Cliff Duvernois:

We don't know her situation.

Cliff Duvernois:

We don't know what she's struggling.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

No.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We do not.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And that's what I want these people to feel safe and have a safe

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

haven to go to, to ask for help.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Because it is hard asking for help.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

There was a guy, a veteran out in Trout Lake who I had heard needed food.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And I went out there and was talking to him and he's rushed a real nice guy.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

But he was eating toast every day.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

That's it.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Toast every day.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Cuz that's all he could afford.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So every once a month or so, I go bring them a little bit of food, but it's

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

sad to know that there's, even one of our veterans is eating toast every day.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I just, I that, I can't fathom that.

Cliff Duvernois:

Yeah, that, that right there breaks my heart.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Yeah, mine too.

Cliff Duvernois:

With the group, you get it started.

Cliff Duvernois:

You've got it launched.

Cliff Duvernois:

You made it up to a thousand people.

Cliff Duvernois:

I guess my next question for you is, at what point did you think to yourself,

Cliff Duvernois:

holy cow, this is really taking off.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: I think it was the programs.

Cliff Duvernois:

All the different programs we ran.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I, it's I don't believe that I'm this smart of a guy, so I know it was the Lord.

Cliff Duvernois:

And the programs we run are so cool.

Cliff Duvernois:

Like May's coming up.

Cliff Duvernois:

That's teacher Appreciation month.

Cliff Duvernois:

We buy all the area teachers pizza for lunch.

Cliff Duvernois:

They always get the kids something.

Cliff Duvernois:

But nobody ever does anything for the teachers.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I don't even have kids in school anymore.

Cliff Duvernois:

But yet I make sure that every May we make sure that we have pizzas

Cliff Duvernois:

for all the teachers in the area.

Cliff Duvernois:

So that's a real blessing right there.

Cliff Duvernois:

So what do you do?

Cliff Duvernois:

Do you go on to the Facebook group and say, Hey, if you want

Cliff Duvernois:

to donate to pizzas for teachers?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yep.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Then it's for the teachers.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And then, and it, and the summer is pretty laid back for our group.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

But then we jump right back into Thanksgiving.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We fed 42 families with Thanksgiving dinner last year.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We did.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

we do our Christmas programs.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We have three different Christmas programs.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We do, a stocking for the elderly.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We do adopt a family.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

92 families were adopted last year by other, by our, my members.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And then we do, Shop with a Cop.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I did 14 kids this year with Shop With A Cop.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And what I do is I put a hundred dollars away, pretty much every

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

week or every other week to, offset the, the Shop with a Cop.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And each child was allowed to spend $200 and we did 14 kids.

Cliff Duvernois:

This is incredible.

Cliff Duvernois:

I'm totally loving this story.

Cliff Duvernois:

For our audience, we're gonna take a quick break to thank our sponsors.

Cliff Duvernois:

when we come back, we're gonna explore some of the more of these

Cliff Duvernois:

programs, with Dean and talk about the explosive growth that his group is

Cliff Duvernois:

seeing, cuz it really is phenomenal.

Cliff Duvernois:

We'll see you after the break.

Hello everyone and welcome back to Ordinary People, Extraordinary Things.

Cliff Duvernois:

I'm talking to Dean O'Brien, founder of Yooper Do-Gooders.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I am loving this conversation.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, Dean, before the break, you were talking about some of the

Cliff Duvernois:

programs that you got going on.

Cliff Duvernois:

And what I wanna do is I want to go back and I wanna hit on one cause that kind of

Cliff Duvernois:

perked, peaked my interest a little bit.

Cliff Duvernois:

Shop with a Cop.

Cliff Duvernois:

Talk to us about this program.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Shop With a Cop.

Cliff Duvernois:

It's actually called the London Casey Shop with a Cop, and London

Cliff Duvernois:

Casey was an eight year old girl that lost her life to cancer.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we dedicated that to her.

Cliff Duvernois:

I had helped out with the situation with her and a couple other people too.

Cliff Duvernois:

Anyhow, the Shop with the COP is something that I came up with a couple years back

Cliff Duvernois:

that I would like to be involved in.

Cliff Duvernois:

And the best way I knew how to be involved with it is just to save money and then go

Cliff Duvernois:

to the local police departments and ask 'em if they'd go shopping with the kids.

Cliff Duvernois:

And they were all for it.

Cliff Duvernois:

So I actually go to several different precincts.

Cliff Duvernois:

I actually do the tribe.

Cliff Duvernois:

They send a police officer, the sheriffs, the Mackinac County

Cliff Duvernois:

Sheriffs and the city St.

Cliff Duvernois:

Ignace city police.

Cliff Duvernois:

And then I had some state troopers from, Sault St.

Cliff Duvernois:

Marie that also went.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we go to Walmart, usually two weeks before Christmas.

Cliff Duvernois:

And each child is allowed to spend $200.

Cliff Duvernois:

The children are picked from the area teachers.

Cliff Duvernois:

I contact the teachers and they get together and they're the ones that

Cliff Duvernois:

tell me which child needs it the most.

Cliff Duvernois:

They see it every day.

Cliff Duvernois:

They see the per the kids every day.

Cliff Duvernois:

And they know more than I would for me to just pick some kids out.

Cliff Duvernois:

And they're the ones that knows that needs it.

Cliff Duvernois:

And to see these kids go in there and be able to shop for $200 and

Cliff Duvernois:

their only requirement is that they gotta buy their parents something.

Cliff Duvernois:

Oh, that's cute.

Cliff Duvernois:

I love that.

Cliff Duvernois:

All right, so you've gotten the Facebook group started.

Cliff Duvernois:

You've made it to a thousand members.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now you're just you're cooking.

Cliff Duvernois:

At what point in time did you say to yourself, man, I better

Cliff Duvernois:

wrap this up into a nonprofit?

Cliff Duvernois:

Or did you always have a nonprofit and you just put the Facebook group in it?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

No, I've never, I didn't know anything

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

about a nonprofit to tell you the truth.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And I have a really dear friend of mine that lives in St Ignace

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

here with me, and he's a good guy.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And he was on me about it after I got to like 2000 members he's like, you

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

should do this, you should do this.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And he was on me about it for two years straight.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And then in January, 2022, we went ahead and got our nonprofit.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, what was the tipping point to becoming a nonprofit?

Cliff Duvernois:

It's a lot of paperwork.

Cliff Duvernois:

You gotta go through a lot of rigor roll.

Cliff Duvernois:

So what's, why did you ultimately decide to do it?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Because we got so big and then, I, 90% of

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

the money comes outta my own pocket.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

My kids are all grown and gone.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So I don't really have a lot to spend my money on.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So I just started putting it towards people.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Like yesterday I built a ramp for some lady, you know, after I got off

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

work, I went out and finished this ramp for a lady that broke her leg.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And, that come right outta my own pocket.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I paid for that.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

it's just, I just have to do this.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I, You can't tell the Lord no or somebody else will handle it, Lord.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

You've gotta go out and do it.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So I'm out there doing it.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And basically I w I, we've gotta start filling out grants.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And we're doing grants now.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So that's gonna help me a lot because I won't have to pull outta my own

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

pocket once we start getting grants.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So it was more of the grant thing.

Cliff Duvernois:

Okay.

Cliff Duvernois:

What I would like to do now is talk, you mentioned this briefly before

Cliff Duvernois:

we took a break, You've mentioned that you've gotten phone calls in

Cliff Duvernois:

the middle of the night from D H S.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yeah.

Cliff Duvernois:

About, Hey, do you've got some food?

Cliff Duvernois:

Or could you put the word out to, to help this lady?

Cliff Duvernois:

Or whatever it is.

Cliff Duvernois:

At what point did you know either other organizations start reaching out to you or

Cliff Duvernois:

was this some kind of a campaign for you?

Cliff Duvernois:

Reach out to them because it seems like there's a lot of synergy between

Cliff Duvernois:

other organizations that are out there and the Yooper do gooders.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: I think that it was more them

Cliff Duvernois:

reaching out to me because they had seen how well it was going.

Cliff Duvernois:

I really didn't reach out to anybody really.

Cliff Duvernois:

I just was doing this all on my own and just winging a prayer as you say.

Cliff Duvernois:

And, yeah, just she ran into a problem.

Cliff Duvernois:

I know her personally, and she just ran into a problem and

Cliff Duvernois:

she said, Hey, I'm at home.

Cliff Duvernois:

I can't get into the office.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I, girl, got a girl that needs some food.

Cliff Duvernois:

Can you help her out?

Cliff Duvernois:

And now it's happened a couple of times now too.

Cliff Duvernois:

So I think that's cool that it was, that they were relying

Cliff Duvernois:

on me to help them out too.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I just, I don't know that really struck me as, the

Cliff Duvernois:

Lord really doing his work.

Cliff Duvernois:

And it also seems to me too, that one of the big things

Cliff Duvernois:

with the Yooper do gooders is because you can take action so quickly.

Cliff Duvernois:

It's not like you have to go through a bureaucracy or anything else

Cliff Duvernois:

like that literally, because you're bringing together people who wanna

Cliff Duvernois:

help and people who need help.

Cliff Duvernois:

And they can literally ju make something happen within 30 minutes.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Yeah, no red tape.

Cliff Duvernois:

Yeah.

Cliff Duvernois:

None.

Cliff Duvernois:

which is absolutely beautiful.

Cliff Duvernois:

At what point in time did you say to yourself, sweet

Cliff Duvernois:

Moses, I need help with this?

Cliff Duvernois:

Because, cuz obviously you're not alone.

Cliff Duvernois:

You've got people who, other people who monitor the group and you've got,

Cliff Duvernois:

I've seen some posts on your page about bringing on a treasurer for the nonprofit.

Cliff Duvernois:

So at what point did you say to yourself, man, I need help.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: I started getting interviews when

Cliff Duvernois:

I, after I became a nonprofit.

Cliff Duvernois:

I started getting interviews, through Tim was the very first

Cliff Duvernois:

one to interview me actually.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I had a friend and I asked him to be my vice president.

Cliff Duvernois:

And he said yes.

Cliff Duvernois:

And so he went with me to the interview and then it just branched off from there.

Cliff Duvernois:

I knew I was gonna have to have a treasurer.

Cliff Duvernois:

Especially if we were getting grants.

Cliff Duvernois:

and then the treasurer informed me that we need a secretary.

Cliff Duvernois:

So we got a secretary.

Cliff Duvernois:

And then I got advocates, which they're all part of my board too.

Cliff Duvernois:

And my advocates are people that are spaced out, like one in the Soo one in

Cliff Duvernois:

Newberry, one in Cheboygan, and one in St.

Cliff Duvernois:

Ignace here.

Cliff Duvernois:

And what they are is they organize things.

Cliff Duvernois:

Like the Easter basket thing for the elderly.

Cliff Duvernois:

We do the Easter baskets for elderly.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we did over 300 this year.

Cliff Duvernois:

And for me to do the senior homes up in the Sioux or in Newberry or in Rudger

Cliff Duvernois:

and, Pickford area or Cedarville area, it's too hard for me to do it all.

Cliff Duvernois:

So I take care of the St.

Cliff Duvernois:

Ignace one.

Cliff Duvernois:

And then my advocates take care of their area.

Cliff Duvernois:

If you would share with us, a, a couple of stories, a couple

Cliff Duvernois:

instances where the Yooper do-gooders, has really helped out some people.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: I was talking about this

Cliff Duvernois:

when I, it was a miracle.

Cliff Duvernois:

This is actually a miracle and I look at it as a miracle.

Cliff Duvernois:

You can find miracles in every day.

Cliff Duvernois:

And when I first started, I was, like I said to you, I, I went two

Cliff Duvernois:

years before I started it to see if I could help out at the senior home.

Cliff Duvernois:

And they told me no.

Cliff Duvernois:

And then that some, that year that I started all this,

Cliff Duvernois:

it was in February of 2020.

Cliff Duvernois:

We know in March.

Cliff Duvernois:

Beginning of April, we got hit with Covid.

Cliff Duvernois:

So all the senior homes were locked up and closed up and you couldn't go

Cliff Duvernois:

in and they, they couldn't come out.

Cliff Duvernois:

And they couldn't see their families or do anything like that.

Cliff Duvernois:

So I organized a band, a single guy, he was just a a guitar player.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I set it up to where we could sit in the courtyard.

Cliff Duvernois:

And he set up his, amp and his guitar and he sang.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we did that every Thursday night through the whole summer

Cliff Duvernois:

of the first Covid 2020.

Cliff Duvernois:

And we were walking out one night and the lady that actually denied me from coming

Cliff Duvernois:

in and helping out the seniors was walking us out and locking up after, locking

Cliff Duvernois:

the courtyard up after we were done.

Cliff Duvernois:

And, I looked at her and I said, do you see how my Lord works?

Cliff Duvernois:

And she goes, what do you mean?

Cliff Duvernois:

I said, two years ago you told me I couldn't come in here and

Cliff Duvernois:

help and look where I'm at now.

Cliff Duvernois:

And she goes, oh my gosh, Dean.

Cliff Duvernois:

And she gave me a big hug.

Cliff Duvernois:

Cause it, it, it's it, my Lord says, no, this is gonna happen.

Cliff Duvernois:

And it happens.

Cliff Duvernois:

And then, we've had, we had, we've given, actually given away two cars on our, site.

Cliff Duvernois:

I didn't give away.

Cliff Duvernois:

Just one, one lady contacted me and her mother had passed

Cliff Duvernois:

away and they had her car.

Cliff Duvernois:

And they said that We love your page so much, we'd like to donate the car.

Cliff Duvernois:

Could you find us a good family for it?

Cliff Duvernois:

And I ended up finding a good family of a girl that had two kids and no, no

Cliff Duvernois:

access to vehicle or anything like that.

Cliff Duvernois:

So we gave her a car.

Cliff Duvernois:

Another girl, was the same thing.

Cliff Duvernois:

She came on and was looking for a car.

Cliff Duvernois:

And within, I swear within four hours, somebody was giving her a car.

Cliff Duvernois:

So two cars have been given away on my page.

Cliff Duvernois:

that's incredible.

Cliff Duvernois:

That's incredible.

Cliff Duvernois:

I'm not even sure what to say

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: about that.

Cliff Duvernois:

Yeah.

Cliff Duvernois:

I, it's just, it's just one of the many stories that, that,

Cliff Duvernois:

that have just been miracles.

Cliff Duvernois:

People helping people.

Cliff Duvernois:

I just, it's so heartwarming to know that these people still

Cliff Duvernois:

do these things, you know?

Cliff Duvernois:

Speaking of miracles, how many people are on your page today?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: 7,600 and some.

Cliff Duvernois:

Yes.

Cliff Duvernois:

and that right there alone is beautiful.

Cliff Duvernois:

And I saw the other day, I think I was on my phone when I looked

Cliff Duvernois:

at the Yooper Do-gooder group, and it's, you guys are growing.

Cliff Duvernois:

it's 50 to 60 new members a week.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Yes, yes, it is.

Cliff Duvernois:

it really is.

Cliff Duvernois:

I, there're, it's just grown and grown and that's why I had to get to

Cliff Duvernois:

nonprofit because I can't keep up.

Cliff Duvernois:

Where do you see this going?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: it, the Lord's got this.

Cliff Duvernois:

So it's gonna continue to grow.

Cliff Duvernois:

the next thing we're going for is the homeless, shelter in the Soo.

Cliff Duvernois:

They've actually told me if the homeless shelter runs smoothly for three years,

Cliff Duvernois:

that they want me to open another one.

Cliff Duvernois:

I could see that part growing.

Cliff Duvernois:

I wanted to continue after I'm even gone from this world.

Cliff Duvernois:

So when you talk about the homeless shelter,

Cliff Duvernois:

is this something you started?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Yes, I, when I first started Yooper

Cliff Duvernois:

do gooders, that was in my radar.

Cliff Duvernois:

It was in my mind.

Cliff Duvernois:

It was in my heart.

Cliff Duvernois:

And Yooper Do gooders was going so.

Cliff Duvernois:

Getting so big so fast that I put it on the back burner.

Cliff Duvernois:

And about six months ago, the Lord put it on my heart again.

Cliff Duvernois:

And so now it's come to fruition.

Cliff Duvernois:

Not only did he put it on my heart, but he put in my mind all the

Cliff Duvernois:

different programs I wanna run.

Cliff Duvernois:

I just don't look at myself as being this smart to come up with all these

Cliff Duvernois:

ideas, so I know it's the Lord.

Cliff Duvernois:

No, and it's wonderful the work that you're

Cliff Duvernois:

doing, it's absolutely incredible.

Cliff Duvernois:

The, so you start the homeless shelter.

Cliff Duvernois:

Is there any crossover between the homeless shelter and Yooper do gooders?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Oh, yes.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

We're going to, we're gonna actually, and every member will

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

be a part of the homeless shelter.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

When we need things, we'll be getting on the Facebook page and asking for things,

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

shampoos, lotions, towels, what, whatever we need at the homeless shelter, I'm

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

gonna reach out to my members and they're gonna be a part of the homeless shelter.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I want that every.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

7,600 members.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I want them all to be a part of this homeless shelter.

Cliff Duvernois:

Wow, this is incredible.

Cliff Duvernois:

I'm loving the story more and more.

Cliff Duvernois:

This is beautiful.

Cliff Duvernois:

Now, when you think about Yooper Do-Gooders, what comes to mind?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Neighbors helping neighbors.

Cliff Duvernois:

That's a beautiful tagline.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Yep.

Cliff Duvernois:

And then I guess the question I got for you is,

Cliff Duvernois:

Now is that, cuz you, we've talked before about reaching out and working

Cliff Duvernois:

with other organizations that are in the area and sometimes it's

Cliff Duvernois:

other nonprofits or state agencies.

Cliff Duvernois:

Talk to us a little bit about some of the relationships that you

Cliff Duvernois:

have formed with like for-profit businesses that are in the area.

Cliff Duvernois:

How are they donating to what it is that you're doing?

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Every September I do a city appreciation

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

luncheon for all of the city workers, which is about 70 or 80 city workers.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I've teamed up with McDonald's and they donate free lunches.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

They gimme the lunch cards there that you just, and then I drop them off to

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

the head guy down at the city building.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And he hands 'em out and they all get a free lunch out of the deal.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

Um, that's just one.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

most of all the businesses in the area really support me and our,

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

like our local grocery store.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

It's huge.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

I go up there and I get my turkeys from them at Thanksgiving.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

They're always there to lend a hand if I'm going there to like most people how I shop

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

is I'll invite them to family fair and.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

and they just go shop.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And I tell 'em they got a hundred hours of spend and they go and shop.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And then I just stand at the front and pay for it.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

And the people at Family Fair, which is our local grocery store, they've

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

been really helpful with that.

an O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders:

So yeah, a lot of the businesses are very active in it.

Cliff Duvernois:

When you start, working with them, did you reach out to them

Cliff Duvernois:

and say, Hey, I'm doing this thing.

Cliff Duvernois:

Would you like to be a part of it?

Cliff Duvernois:

Were they reaching out to you?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Some reached out to me and

Cliff Duvernois:

some I reached out to them.

Cliff Duvernois:

a lot of 'em, a lot of it, I did my homework and reached

Cliff Duvernois:

out to them, most of them.

Cliff Duvernois:

But some have reached out to me and you don't want to help.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean, if somebody's listening to this and they want

Cliff Duvernois:

to get involved with what's going on, check out your Facebook group.

Cliff Duvernois:

Maybe they've got some stuff that they also would like to donate.

Cliff Duvernois:

What would be the best way for them to do that?

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean O'Brien, Yooper Do-Gooders: Just go on Facebook.

Cliff Duvernois:

If you're on Facebook and type in, Yooper do gooders and look for us.

Cliff Duvernois:

It'll have a picture of the up with hearts on it.

Cliff Duvernois:

And it says, in changing One Heart at a time.

Cliff Duvernois:

and just to answer the rules and regulations of the group and join.

Cliff Duvernois:

We'll get you right on and you can sit and watch what goes on or you can join in.

Cliff Duvernois:

Dean, thank you so much for taking time outta

Cliff Duvernois:

your schedule today to talk to us.

Cliff Duvernois:
