This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes rev up their trucks and get ready to arm wrestle with "Over the Top" (1987), Sylvester Stallone’s unlikely mix of father-son drama and competitive arm wrestling.
Both Mike Butler and Mike Field enjoy this one, even as they acknowledge the gaping plot holes and occasionally absurd storytelling. They break down why the father/son dynamic between Stallone’s character and his son actually works, how the arm wrestling sequences mostly deliver, and why the film’s tone somehow balances sincere melodrama with over-the-top (see what we did there?) sports action.
And, Field makes the case for Bull Hurley; the massive arm wrestling rival, as one of the great, underrated 80s villains.
So grab your trucker hat, turn it backward, and join us as we talk about a movie that’s as heartfelt as it is ridiculous.
