Speaker:

It is June 28th, 2024.

2

:

And you're listening to

the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

Welcome back I'm pastor, rod.

4

:

I am the associate pastor at

compass Bible church, north, Texas.

5

:

And I'm filling in solo

until pastor PJ gets back.

6

:

He'll be back on duty.

7

:

No next Wednesday, whenever that is.

8

:

So whatever date that is.

9

:

I'm counting down, but that's when

he's back, I'm looking forward to it.

10

:

I'm sure you are too.

11

:

But until then we will carry on.

12

:

In fact, we're going to carry on today

with first Kings chapters, 20 and 21.

13

:

So not a whole lot of territory,

but there's a lot happening.

14

:

So let's jump on in.

15

:

First Kings chapter 20.

16

:

Well, here in this chapter, A Hab

is still on the throne and what's

17

:

about to happen is that Ben, Hey,

dad of Syria is going to invade.

18

:

Some Marriott.

19

:

Well, initially Ahab responds

favorably and says, you know what?

20

:

Yes, we will be your vassal.

21

:

We S we will also come to your leadership.

22

:

What you say we will do.

23

:

Except when Benny Ben, Hey dad

realizes how quickly they re roll over.

24

:

He suggests even further restrictions

with greater resources taken.

25

:

And at that point, a Hab responds

with L w with the elders.

26

:

He says, guys, look, look

what he's trying to do.

27

:

He's trying to create.

28

:

He's trying to put me in

a position and put us in a

29

:

position where we can't respond.

30

:

We can't, we can't allow this.

31

:

And so the elders in Samarria tell

Ahab, do not listen or consent.

32

:

That's what he says in verse eight here.

33

:

And so.

34

:

He sends back a word to the king.

35

:

That is Ben.

36

:

Hey dad in Syria.

37

:

And then bay then, Hey

dad responds with, Hey.

38

:

Because he said, I'm bringing down

the fire, I'm coming with a thunder.

39

:

And Ahab says something really funny.

40

:

He essentially says in

the common vernacular.

41

:

Don't count your chickens until them

eggs, hatch, something of that nature.

42

:

That's what happens.

43

:

And so now, Ben, Hey, dad

and Ahab are in a war.

44

:

Verses 13 through about 25 here.

45

:

Something surprising takes place.

46

:

Uh, profit comes in near

to Ahab king of Israel.

47

:

Now notice here, this is not Alijah.

48

:

In the prior chapter in chapter

19 Alijah was the mentoring.

49

:

The fact that he was alone,

that there's no one else.

50

:

And God himself has to

correct a mistake, Elijah.

51

:

There are other profits that

you don't even know about.

52

:

I've kept several thousand.

53

:

That have not yet bowed the need to bay.

54

:

All.

55

:

And so here you have one

of those people show up.

56

:

He doesn't have a name,

but he does have a message.

57

:

And he says, look, I'm going to give

Syria into your hand so that you

58

:

shall know that I am the Lord and

important for you to know there that

59

:

the you is a second person, plural.

60

:

You all shall know that I am the Lord.

61

:

And so Ahab gets a few more details

about how it's, uh, how it's supposed

62

:

to unravel or how it's supposed to go.

63

:

And then he continues to pursue the fight.

64

:

As he pursues the fight with Ben.

65

:

Hey dad.

66

:

He defeats him surprising upset here, Ben.

67

:

Hey, dad turns around.

68

:

They pursue them.

69

:

Uh, and it's all said and

done, at least for now.

70

:

But then the prophet came near

again in verse 22 and said, Hey.

71

:

Don't get too comfortable because

they're coming back in the spring.

72

:

So.

73

:

Recover prepare for the future and

get ready for the next onslaught.

74

:

Well, exactly as he predicted

it in verses 26 and all the way

75

:

through verse let's just call it 34.

76

:

And they return in the spring.

77

:

Now, part of the reason why , they return.

78

:

Is that the servants of, or the

Kings council you can think of them.

79

:

Of Ben, Hey, dad suggest to him the

reason why the Israelites won is because

80

:

their God is the God of the mountains,

but our God is the God of the Plains.

81

:

Now, remember they have chariots

and horses, which are going to be

82

:

much more nimble on flat ground

as opposed to mountainous regions.

83

:

And so they suspect, well, once we get

them on the planes will do much better.

84

:

But notice here in verse 28,

another unnamed man of God

85

:

comes near again, not Elijah.

86

:

And he says, look, because they have

said that they were going to win because

87

:

, their God is the God of the valleys.

88

:

I'm going to step in.

89

:

And here you go again, and you

all shall know that I am the Lord.

90

:

That's in verse 28.

91

:

And so they prepare for battle and

God gives them a swift and decisive

92

:

victory, 100,000 foot soldiers, and one

day that's how many the Israelites take

93

:

out and then a wall in the city of.

94

:

falls upon them taking out another 27,000.

95

:

Now that.

96

:

That kind of math , is interesting

because you wonder how big was this wall?

97

:

Where was this wall?

98

:

Was it multiple walls?

99

:

How much was it to take out 27,000?

100

:

And the simple answer is we don't know.

101

:

I don't know what's happening

there except to say that God.

102

:

Intervenes and causes 27,000 to fall.

103

:

A hundred thousand from

the Israelite soldiers.

104

:

Well, Ben, Hey, dad now

is hiding in the city.

105

:

He's hiding in the city of APEC.

106

:

He's surrounded by his advisors.

107

:

And his advisor suggests, you know what.

108

:

The Israelite Kings or merciful Kings.

109

:

Why don't we try to see if we

can put you in as good graces.

110

:

And so they sent out a messenger.

111

:

And they said from the messenger from

Ben, Hey dad, please let me live.

112

:

And Ahab says, does the king still live?

113

:

He is my brother.

114

:

What gives, what gives,

why is he saying this?

115

:

Oh, we don't exactly know what's

motivating him, but we know this

116

:

is the wrong thing for him to do.

117

:

And so the servants capitalize on this

approach and they say, yes, this is Ben.

118

:

Hey dad, your brother.

119

:

And so they bring him out.

120

:

He puts him in his chariots and

then they offer terms of peace, Ben,

121

:

Hey dad says, Hey, look, I'll I'll

return the cities I took from you.

122

:

You can set up shop in my town.

123

:

We'll call things, even Stevens.

124

:

And Ahab agrees.

125

:

Verse 35 to the end of chapter 20.

126

:

A certain man of the sons of the prophets.

127

:

So yet you have another one unnamed

again, Elijah, you're not alone who comes

128

:

and he comes with a bit of theatrical.

129

:

He has someone punch him in the face,

beat him up a little bit, Scruff him up.

130

:

And he does so in a clever

way to cause a habit.

131

:

To render judgment against himself.

132

:

This is reminiscent of what

Nathan does with David.

133

:

When he says here's a story of a situation

where a man takes a Ulam of another man

134

:

and David says, yeah, man shall pay.

135

:

And then Nathan says, you are the man.

136

:

Well, you have something like that

happening here in first Kings chapter 20.

137

:

Where this unnamed man of the

sons of the prophets comes in

138

:

and gives Ahab a scenario where he

renders judgment against himself.

139

:

And then he says, basically,

Hey, because you let him go.

140

:

You're going to pay for it with your life.

141

:

This was a man that God had

devoted to destruction in verse 42.

142

:

And because you didn't do that, you're

now going to pay with your life.

143

:

Interestingly in verse 43.

144

:

Ahab.

145

:

Goes back to his house and

here's the words vexed in Solon.

146

:

He goes back to some Marriott vexed.

147

:

And Solon.

148

:

Okay.

149

:

Remember those words, because when

we jump into the next chapter, you're

150

:

going to see those words, reappear.

151

:

First Kings chapter 21, then.

152

:

Neighbor is introduced.

153

:

Nate.

154

:

Nate bought the Jezreelite.

155

:

He has a vineyard.

156

:

In Jezreel beside the palace

of Ahab king of Samaria.

157

:

So notice here where his

palace is perfectly situated.

158

:

And so a Hab thanks.

159

:

W what better way to improve my mood

than to have me a nice vegetable

160

:

garden and what a better place then.

161

:

, neighbor, the Jezreelite vineyard.

162

:

And so he makes him an offer.

163

:

He says, look, you can either trade up.

164

:

I'll give you a better

one or you can cash in.

165

:

I'll pay you good money for this.

166

:

And he says, no way, not a chance.

167

:

I'm not going to violate God.

168

:

In this way now, whatever

reason was behind it.

169

:

The reason Naboth offers is as

a matter of principle, look,

170

:

this is the land of my father's.

171

:

I can't give this away.

172

:

Well, a hub isn't like that.

173

:

And here we go again.

174

:

Ahab went back to his house, vexed

and Solon, because of what Naboth

175

:

the Jezreelite had said to him.

176

:

Well soon enough Jessebelle his wife

sees him in this state and says,

177

:

Hey, aren't you the king of Israel?

178

:

Let's do something about this.

179

:

In fact, she says, you know

what, don't even sweat.

180

:

It.

181

:

I'll take care of this for you.

182

:

And so she hired some thugs, some goons.

183

:

To set up a feast in honor of the Lord and

to bear false testimony against neighbor.

184

:

Now, this is interesting because

she's using a legal means

185

:

to get to an illegal ends.

186

:

The legal means is that it requires at

least two witnesses to level a charge

187

:

against someone so that someone's

not put to death accidentally.

188

:

At least that's the goal here.

189

:

Well, in this case, Jezza bell has

connections to some ungodly fellows.

190

:

She hires them says, I'll give

you a sufficient amount of money.

191

:

You level a charge against this man.

192

:

Say that he cursed God and king.

193

:

And then you to confirm the

situation and then they kill him.

194

:

And that's exactly what happens.

195

:

She uses a lawful means for

an ungodly and unlawful ends.

196

:

She uses the legal system to

essentially perform murder.

197

:

And that's what happens.

198

:

So once this takes place.

199

:

Jessebelle receives word.

200

:

She goes back to her husband and she

says arise, go and get your land.

201

:

Go and take possession of it.

202

:

Well, Ahab is having a

great time at this point.

203

:

He's on cloud nine because he

got exactly what he wanted.

204

:

Doesn't ask any questions.

205

:

It seems, it seems like he's perfectly

okay with whatever just transpired.

206

:

And he moves on with life, except God

doesn't move on from this in verses

207

:

17, through the end of chapter 21,

Elijah jumps back in now, he was gone

208

:

from this story for a little bit.

209

:

We had a couple other people jump on in.

210

:

But now he's tagged in.

211

:

The tag team takes place.

212

:

Word of the Lord came

to Elijah in verse 17.

213

:

And he says, go down and

meet Ahab king of Israel.

214

:

Who's in Samarria behold, he's

in the vineyard of neighbors.

215

:

Where he has gone to take possession.

216

:

That's exactly where he's at.

217

:

He's in the place that he just stole.

218

:

And then he tells him this.

219

:

Have you killed and also take possession.

220

:

And you shall say to him, thus says

the Lord in the place where dogs

221

:

licked up the blood of neighbor.

222

:

Shall dogs lick up your own blood.

223

:

So in other words, the place where he

died is a place where you're going to die.

224

:

Here's an interesting phrase.

225

:

Verse 28.

226

:

I have said to Elijah.

227

:

Have you found me?

228

:

Oh, my enemy.

229

:

Now recall, I don't know if you remember

this a couple of chapters ago, chapter 18.

230

:

Uh, when he was looking for him in.

231

:

The time of the drought.

232

:

Uh, and chapter 18, verse 17.

233

:

Ahab saw Elijah a hub said to him,

Is it, you, you troubler of Israel.

234

:

So in chapter 18, he's just a troubler

now in chapter 21, he's an enemy.

235

:

But get this, even though he

directs his comment to Elijah.

236

:

Notice who answers, it's not Elijah.

237

:

It's God.

238

:

He answered.

239

:

I have found you because you

have sold yourself to do what is

240

:

evil in the sight of the Lord.

241

:

Behold, I will bring disaster

upon you that I is of course,

242

:

coming from the Lord Yahweh.

243

:

I will bring disaster upon you.

244

:

I will utterly burn you up and

we'll cut off from Ahab, every

245

:

male bond or free in Israel.

246

:

And I will make your house like the

house of Jeroboam the son of ne bat.

247

:

And like the house of Basha

the center of a hijab.

248

:

So God renders judgment upon him for

the work that he does or the evil

249

:

work that he does in particular.

250

:

He says, not only that I'm going to cut

off your line, just like a different

251

:

Jeroboam just like I did for Basha and

that's exactly what happens, but, but

252

:

notice, notice something so fascinating.

253

:

And the final few verses of chapter 21.

254

:

Versus 25 to 29.

255

:

Get this.

256

:

Ahab repents.

257

:

Now this isn't a full repentance.

258

:

This isn't him turning his

life over to Yahweh and saying,

259

:

I'm going to be faithful.

260

:

But notice in verse 27, when Ahab heard

these words, he tore his clothes and put

261

:

sackcloth on his flesh and fasted and lay

in sackcloth and went about dejectedly.

262

:

Now this is different than

his being vexed in Solon.

263

:

It's different language,

different response.

264

:

And so God sees this and he tells

Alijah, he says, have you seen how

265

:

Ahab has humbled himself before me?

266

:

In other words, God's paying attention

and he tells Elijah to check this out.

267

:

A Hab responds with repentance.

268

:

And because of this.

269

:

Because he has humbled himself.

270

:

He says I will not bring

the disaster in his days.

271

:

But in his son's days, I will

bring the disaster upon his house.

272

:

So God loves to showcase

mercy where he sees humility.

273

:

What incredible mercy that is.

274

:

Now there are at least a few

lessons we can derive from this.

275

:

I'll just offer a couple

of small points here.

276

:

First of all, I want you to pay

attention to the fact that god is so

277

:

eager to show kindness to the humble.

278

:

God opposes the proud, but

he gives grace to the humble.

279

:

God is willing and able to

showcase mercy and kindness to any.

280

:

Who are willing to lay down their arms.

281

:

And humble themselves before the Lord.

282

:

Uh, whether that's you or someone, you

know, Never lose hope for that person.

283

:

Uh, and if it's you, maybe your

heart is hard before the Lord.

284

:

Maybe it's time for you to lay down

your arms and say, Lord, forgive me.

285

:

I'm sorry for what I've done.

286

:

God is eager.

287

:

To show kindness and mercy to

those who seek him with humility.

288

:

Now going back here.

289

:

Going back to the first chapter.

290

:

We looked at this looking at first.

291

:

Kings chapter 20.

292

:

I want you to notice that

God is the God of everywhere.

293

:

The Syrians thought God surely

could not defeat us in the Plains.

294

:

But God had no problem conquering

them in the Plains or in the mountains

295

:

or anywhere else in the world.

296

:

They might be, God is

not a localized deity.

297

:

He is.

298

:

God.

299

:

Everything he's got of the universe.

300

:

He's got everywhere and every time

and everything, there's no place

301

:

where God can not exert his power.

302

:

Now here's where I think there's

some parallel to us today.

303

:

Sometimes we, , we like

to do things and get it.

304

:

Cause we're physical creatures.

305

:

We'd like to pray in the place where we

think it's going to have the most power.

306

:

You know, we'd like to pray why,

which is not a bad thing per walking

307

:

around your neighborhood and saying,

Lord, I want to take dominion over

308

:

this place for your name sake.

309

:

I want my neighbors to

come to know that's great.

310

:

Fantastic.

311

:

Uh, and if you are about that,

then I would not discourage

312

:

you, but let me encourage you

to think about it this way, too.

313

:

Your prayers are just as effective.

314

:

In your, in the quiet of

your, of your prayer closet.

315

:

Your prayers are just as effective in the

central time zone or an Eastern time zone.

316

:

If you're praying for

the Pacific time zone.

317

:

Your prayers are not limited.

318

:

To a time and a place because God is

not limited to a time and a place.

319

:

Your prayers can be effective no

matter what time or place that

320

:

you're in, no matter who you're

praying for or where they are.

321

:

God is not a God of the Plains.

322

:

He's not a God of the mountains.

323

:

God has a God of the everywhere.

324

:

Make sure that your prayers reflect that.

325

:

One final thing here in chapter 21.

326

:

I mentioned it kind of briefly, but notice

that a Hab is judged for Jesse Bell's sin.

327

:

Ahab.

328

:

Is.

329

:

Willingly ignorant of

whatever she's doing.

330

:

Doesn't ask any questions.

331

:

It seems he's okay with

whatever she's doing.

332

:

He just knows that he has

neighborhoods vineyard.

333

:

And yet God holds them accountable.

334

:

Why.

335

:

Well, I could think of two reasons.

336

:

Number one.

337

:

Ahab probably knew what she was up to.

338

:

He knows his wife.

339

:

Not the first time he met her, probably

had a decent idea what she was up to.

340

:

And so he's complicit at least in

not stopping her from doing the

341

:

wicked things that she was doing.

342

:

But secondly, and perhaps

more importantly, Ahab.

343

:

Was supposed to lead his wife.

344

:

Much like Adam was supposed

to lead his wife Eve.

345

:

And so God holds Adam accountable

in the same way that he holds Ahab

346

:

accountable for not doing right.

347

:

By his wife.

348

:

That that principle of leadership

is still in effect today.

349

:

And Ephesians chapter five husbands

are called to lead their wives.

350

:

Um, but I think that principle

also filters into almost every

351

:

other aspect of our society.

352

:

Again, as the leader

goes, so go, the people.

353

:

As the husband goes, so goes.

354

:

The wife.

355

:

So it goes to the family

as the pastor goes.

356

:

So it goes to church.

357

:

I bring this up to remind you, number one,

if you are a leader, the responsibility

358

:

and the burden is high and it's

heavy, never take that for granted.

359

:

Number two.

360

:

Please pray for your leaders.

361

:

For those who are in

a place of leadership.

362

:

No, that is that Jesus said, strike the

shepherd and the sheep will scatter.

363

:

Please pray for your leaders, pray

for your political leaders, certainly,

364

:

but pray for your spiritual leaders,

pray for your leaders in your home.

365

:

Husbands.

366

:

I pray for your wives.

367

:

I know they're not your leaders,

but you get the idea why it's

368

:

pray for your husband's children.

369

:

Pray for your parents.

370

:

Pray for your pastors.

371

:

Pray for people in leadership positions.

372

:

That's what Paul calls us to do.

373

:

That's what I'm encouraging

you to do today.

374

:

Okay.

375

:

First Kings chapters, 20 and 21.

376

:

I hope some things in

there were helpful for you.

377

:

I look forward to doing this again

with you tomorrow for another

378

:

edition of the daily Bible podcast.
