Shownotes

On this episode of Family Matters, Simon talks with Professor Dianna Kenny the author of Intransigence: Gender Ideology, Social Contagion, and the Scandal of Youth Gender Medicine. Professor Kenny is a former Professor of Psychology and Professor of Music at The University of Sydney, and is now a consulting psychologist and psychotherapist. She talks to Simon of how she be began receiving adolescent referrals after a psychiatrist colleague reported “strange” presentations of youths claiming they were born in the wrong body; after long-term psychotherapy and conjoint family therapy, several clients abandoned the belief and addressed their underlying issues. Through her practice and research, she noted the dramatic rise in young people claiming to be ‘trans’. She argues the most susceptible are often females 10–20 years of age, including those with autism, ADHD, mental health problems, or family disruption, and describes a combined influence of school curricula and social media “doom scrolling,” amplified during COVID lockdowns. Discussing aspects of her book, Professor Kenny claims institutions (including education, legal, medical, and various commissioners) have been “captured” via social contagion dynamics and enforced by cancel culture including deregistration, lawsuits, and conversion-therapy laws. To illustrate, she talks to Simon of how the Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner couldn’t define a woman when asked in Senate questioning, and the shocking cases of activists and institutions seeking to silence doctors such as Julian Spencer and Andrew Amos. Professor Kenny talk that transition is a “conveyor belt” from social transition to blockers, hormones, and surgery. Referencing her book, she criticises shallow assessment and quick prescribing, discusses family estrangement and alleged police involvement over misgendering.
