Evo Terra:

Podcasters are plagued with conflicting advice.

Evo Terra:

Be yourself, but also follow this exact format, or you

Evo Terra:

won't have a successful show.

Evo Terra:

Resolving that conflict isn't easy, but it starts by trusting your talents.

Evo Terra:

Today's episode is brought to you by Gumball, the premiere

Evo Terra:

marketplace to easily and efficiently buy host-read podcast ads.

Evo Terra:

Gumball provides a transparent and modern buying platform, connecting great

Evo Terra:

podcasts with the best advertisers.

Evo Terra:

Gumball takes away all the logistical headaches for podcasters and advertisers

Evo Terra:

alike by managing inventory schedules, providing easy and consistent ad

Evo Terra:

script instructions, easy aircheck uploading, and ensuring payments

Evo Terra:

are made in a timely fashion.

Evo Terra:

Best of all, Gumball takes pride in offering the most podcaster friendly

Evo Terra:

terms as a standard, meaning more money flowing directly to the podcaster.

Evo Terra:

As it should be!

Evo Terra:

If your show is pulling down more than 10,000 downloads per episode, you owe

Evo Terra:

it to yourself to talk to Gumball at Gumball.fm to see how they can help you

Evo Terra:

make even more money with your podcast.

Evo Terra:

That's Gumball.fm.

Evo Terra:

And tell 'em Evo sent you!

Evo Terra:

Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.

Evo Terra:

We're taught not to be a show-off.

Evo Terra:

Now, clearly, some people ignore this.

Evo Terra:

They rely on others not showing off so that their own antics shine through.

Evo Terra:

And, of course, in some cultures showing off is really bad,

Evo Terra:

way worse than in others.

Evo Terra:

But even here in the weirdness that is America, society whispers at us all

Evo Terra:

the time, "No one likes a show-off."

Evo Terra:

Well, at the risk of offending my late grandmother, that doesn't

Evo Terra:

really cut it in podcasting.

Evo Terra:

So I'm going to ask a challenging question for you to ponder over the weekend.

Evo Terra:

Are you showcasing your talents on your podcast?

Evo Terra:

Let me put that another way.

Evo Terra:

Do you know what it is that you are really, really good

Evo Terra:

at, and are you leaning into those skills when you podcast?

Evo Terra:

I'm constantly surprised how often this isn't the case.

Evo Terra:

'Times where a podcaster, even an experienced podcaster, is credulously

Evo Terra:

following a format or a playbook that was developed by someone else

Evo Terra:

so that podcaster can be like them.

Evo Terra:

Look, not that there's anything wrong with taking inspiration from someone else.

Evo Terra:

In fact, I think that early stage podcasters should be a

Evo Terra:

lot like teenagers, if you will.

Evo Terra:

But instead of trying on different styles and attitudes and weird worldviews,

Evo Terra:

fledgling podcasters should try on different formats, play different roles,

Evo Terra:

and dig deep into different topics.

Evo Terra:

I know, personally, the type of show I'm doing right now is vastly

Evo Terra:

different than the one I started with - today's the 14th, holy cow!

Evo Terra:

Today, it has been seventeen years exactly, to the day,

Evo Terra:

that I have been podcasting.

Evo Terra:

Happy anniversary to me!

Evo Terra:

Anyhow, a lot different right now what I'm doing than what I was doing back then.

Evo Terra:

But I digress.

Evo Terra:

Let me turn that question into a statement.

Evo Terra:

Don't be afraid to showcase your talents as you podcast.

Evo Terra:

And yes, you do have talents.

Evo Terra:

There are certain aspects of podcasting that you are better at,

Evo Terra:

some you're better at than other aspects of podcasting, right?

Evo Terra:

There's certain things you're good at, but some of those things, you might

Evo Terra:

be one of the best, or, at least, a highly skilled person in that thing.

Evo Terra:

Now, the question is what is that?

Evo Terra:

I don't know.

Evo Terra:

I can look at myself and figure that out.

Evo Terra:

I know that I am not a great listener.

Evo Terra:

I'm just not.

Evo Terra:

So that makes me not a great interviewer, at least not for the kinds of interviews

Evo Terra:

that you might be thinking of.

Evo Terra:

But what I am pretty good at is doing research.

Evo Terra:

So in the rare occasion I do an interview, and I have in the past and

Evo Terra:

do help clients with this as well, I'm able to come up with some really

Evo Terra:

unusual questions, questions that the guest gives you that little nod, like,

Evo Terra:

"Ooh, someone's done their homework."

Evo Terra:

Yeah, I do my homework.

Evo Terra:

And see, that's me leaning into the idea that I know what I'm not

Evo Terra:

good at - just listening, getting good things, but I can dig deep.

Evo Terra:

So that's what I do in the rare instance I actually do an interview.

Evo Terra:

Maybe your voice has a certain equality or tambour that makes

Evo Terra:

it interesting to the audience.

Evo Terra:

Well, lean into that.

Evo Terra:

If you're the kind of person who has a laugh that is labeled

Evo Terra:

"infectious," you should laugh a lot.

Evo Terra:

Just make that a part [of your show].

Evo Terra:

Don't be embarrassed by it.

Evo Terra:

Do it.

Evo Terra:

Are you a skilled musician, maybe?

Evo Terra:

If so, are you putting any of your music into your podcast episodes?

Evo Terra:

And are you letting people know that it's your music rolling through?

Evo Terra:

I think you should do that.

Evo Terra:

It's a unique part of who you are.

Evo Terra:

Showcase that talent.

Evo Terra:

Look, whatever it is that you are good at, either are naturally good at, or

Evo Terra:

due to lots of effort and training you've put into something to become even

Evo Terra:

better at it, don't be afraid to let that talent shine through on your show.

Evo Terra:

That's way, way more important than following some arbitrary plan or format

Evo Terra:

that someone else gave you, especially if there's nothing special about that format.

Evo Terra:

But there is something special about your show, and that's you.

Evo Terra:

So showcase that.

Evo Terra:

I want to leave you with the reminder that She Podcasts LIVE

Evo Terra:

starts today in the Phoenix area.

Evo Terra:

If you are attending, I will see you there.

Evo Terra:

The opening party is tonight, and, yes, I will have my bag of

Evo Terra:
