Season #25 Episode # 28 Shaun J Boyce

Host: Shaun Boyce

We’ve all been there—ready to hit the court, but suddenly the rain spoils your plans. While many might choose to call it a day and grab some nachos, this is the perfect opportunity to stay productive and improve your tennis game, even when you’re off the court.

In this episode of the GoTennis! Podcast, Shaun shares valuable insights on how to make the most of unexpected downtime. Whether you're stuck in the rain or simply need a break from playing, Shaun suggests several ways to stay active and keep improving your tennis skills-

  • Stay Consistent: Even when classes are canceled, Shaun talks about alternatives like at-home workouts or tennis-specific Zoom sessions for kids at TennisForChildren.com.
  • Stay Active Off-Court: From hitting the gym to doing yoga under an awning, Shaun emphasizes the importance of maintaining your fitness routine, regardless of weather.
  • Injury Recovery: If you’re injured, Shaun reminds you to focus on recovery and stay on top of your physical therapy.
  • Keep Moving: Rainy day? No problem. Shaun encourages everyone to stay mobile and active, even if it’s just a walk or a run on the beach.

With a nod to the idea that "movement is life," Shaun discusses the deeper benefits of tennis—how it helps maintain heart health, flexibility, and longevity.

Episode Highlights:

  • How to turn a rainy day into a productive tennis development session.
  • Staying active even when you can’t play on the court.
  • Tips for injury recovery and maintaining physical well-being.
  • The surprising connection between tennis and living a longer, healthier life.

Good luck to all of you headed to your matches, and remember—make the most of your off-court time for a longer, healthier life!

Transcripts

Speaker:

Hey hey, this is Shaun with the GoTennis! Podcast powered by Signature Tennis.

Speaker:

And today's tennis tip comes from me.

Speaker:

Have a listen and let us know what you think.

Speaker:

We've all shown up to the courts ready to play our match, take the lesson or hit with

Speaker:

friends.

Speaker:

And it starts pouring down rain.

Speaker:

And many social athletes might take that as a sign to start pouring the drinks and go

Speaker:

eat some nachos.

Speaker:

However, if you are someone who is actually interested in improving your game and therefore

Speaker:

improving your winning percentage, I suggest you consider using that time more wisely

Speaker:

and related to your tennis.

Speaker:

I'll give you an example.

Speaker:

When we're forced to cancel an all-on-court class at tennisforshodern.com, we invite

Speaker:

the kids to set up an at-home workout space and join a Zoom call for a tennis-specific

Speaker:

workout.

Speaker:

Parents have already scheduled that time for tennis activities and especially if the kids

Speaker:

are only signed up for lessons once a week, which isn't enough, by the way, we really need

Speaker:

to stay as consistent as possible for their tennis development.

Speaker:

Another example could be to hit the gym, the road, or the mat as my Pilates instructor

Speaker:

wife would say, to get some exercise during the time you've already scheduled for tennis.

Speaker:

If you're already at the tennis facility, go for a walk with a teammate or set out an

Speaker:

exercise mat under an awning and do some yoga.

Speaker:

Whatever your circumstances, what you do off-court matters.

Speaker:

If you're injured, go to your physical therapy, listen to your doctors, take time to recover.

Speaker:

If you're on vacation, stay active, walk or run on the beach, we're all busy.

Speaker:

Make time to maintain your mobility, flexibility, and your strength.

Speaker:

You've all heard Andre and others compare tennis to life.

Speaker:

Well, I grew up with a print on my grandmother's wall that said, "Tennis isn't a matter

Speaker:

of life or death. It's much more important than that."

Speaker:

And although the author was likely attempting to be funny, the argument can be made that

Speaker:

tennis players live longer than other people.

Speaker:

We stay active longer, we stay social longer, our hearts are healthier.

Speaker:

Movement is life.

Speaker:

So when it rains, use it as an excuse to choose to live a longer, healthier life.

Speaker:

Good luck to all of you headed out to your matches this week, and as always, make the

Speaker:

courts be with you.

Speaker:

Well, there you have it.
