[0:00] Hello, this is Sky. I'll be here with you until sleep. You don't need to listen closely. You can drift off whenever you like. There's nothing to get right tonight.
[0:32] For now, just let yourself be held by the sound of my voice. Let's begin. Before anything else tonight, we can begin by gently putting the day down. Not all at once just little by little sometimes the day lingers in small ways a thought that hasn't quite finished a feeling that's still moving through.
[1:36] Something said or not said. And you don't need to untangle any of that right now. You can imagine placing the day somewhere beside you, not pushing it away, just setting it down for a while. It will still be there in the morning but for now it doesn't need your attention.
[2:31] Your body might still be catching up. Sometimes it takes a little longer than the mind to realize the day is over. So there's no rush.
[2:57] You can begin to notice the simple fact that you are here now resting. Maybe there's a sense of the surface beneath you. The quiet of the room. The feeling of being held, even just a little. You don't need to listen closely. You can let my voice move in and out, like something distant and steady. And from here, we can begin to soften.
[4:09] And I invite you to sink a little bit deeper into your bed. I invite you to meet yourself just that tiny bit more comfortable. Whatever you might need to do to adjust or move, making yourself just the smallest bit more comfortable.
[5:03] Now, preparing and allowing even more to drift into sleep, knowing there is nothing else for you to do. Nowhere else for you to go. Anything that was not finished today can wait until tomorrow. Because, dear one, no matter what we do or don't do, the world continues to spin.
[6:09] The sun comes up, the sun goes down. The moon comes up, the moon goes down. As it spins around this planet. And this planet spins around through space. Everything flowing and moving. The grass keeps growing.
[6:54] The new babies are born. They grow older and go off on their own. The flowers bloom and then they wilt, and the seed pods come after the flowers and still the world spins, no matter what we have done or not done what we've accomplished, what we've not accomplished.
[7:47] In the end, it all becomes part of the past. But here we are now, in this moment.
[8:09] Sinking ever deeper into this moment, into a place of rest and relaxation. And dear ones, I'd like to tell you a story. About sitting somewhere still by a lake. I'm going to describe to you what I'm seeing, what I'm sensing, what I'm feeling. We'll try something different tonight. So just now, I'm sat on a bench, a wooden bench.
[9:27] That is quite weathered because it's outside. This bench witnesses all the rain and the wind and the sun, and the cold and the warm. And as I run my hand over the sea, the wood feels smooth.
[10:14] Yet there's a slight roughness under my fingers and in the grains of the wood. Part of it is raised and there is a very slight depression, between the raised parts and that is where it's rough. There's three panels on the seat of the bench and two long ones on the back. It also has arms. Two arms, and these arms are smooth.
[11:28] Yet this one here on the left feels a little bit rough.
[11:44] It's like it used to be painted, and the paint has melted. With the sun, and is slightly coming away in places. Now, this bench is on the earth. There's a depression a dip right in front of the bench where people put their feet, and there's no grass there, but just beyond the dip The grass is growing, and it's getting taller in places.
[13:01] I definitely think somebody cuts the grass right around the bench.
[13:18] Because just outside the short grass area, the grass is quite long very long and there's a few nettles, some bindweed, thistle, comfrey, dead nettles, And behind me, some trees. I can see willow and alder. They're so lovely. And then, just beyond the grass, in front of me, is a body of water.
[14:37] With some reeds around the edge, gently swaying in the wind.
[14:51] Whenever there's a little bit of wind or a gust of wind, they all move together in the same direction, gently allowing their cells to sway and move, in the water I can see a few different types of water birds and around the edge and beyond of the water are more reeds and rushes, still bearing last year's Fuzzy. Tops. Blowing around.
[16:09] Across from me, at the other side of the water, there's a tree. I think this tree is dead because it doesn't have any leaves or buds. Or anything growing on the branches and all the other trees now, even the oak and the late ash, who takes its time to make leaves. Have already made leaves. And this one doesn't have any. And that's okay. In nature, nothing is wasted.
[17:36] The tree is still a place, for birds to perch or make holes from a nest and a place for insects to use.
[17:59] I can hear the sounds of many birds. Sometimes I cannot see them all because they're hidden. Now that everything is growing there's many places for them to hide, in the rushes on the reeds in the plants in the trees, right now a lot of the birds have babies, and I can hear them, the calls of the adults and the sounds of the babies.
[19:15] And I can hear the sound of the bittern booming. It sounds like, when somebody blows over the top of a bottle. It's a beautiful sound, and the bitterns hide in the reeds.
[19:58] And it's only at this time of the year when they make that sound. And the longer I sit here, the more I notice different creatures, different birds coming out. A big white egret just flew by with all white feathers and black legs. And just now, Now, because I'm sat behind the reeds, I think the birds cannot see me. And a little family of mallard ducks just swam by.
[21:25] One female and six little ones, all swimming together, In a cluster. Not in alignment.
[21:49] They must have been hiding in the reeds. And because I'm quietly sat on the bench, I don't make much noise. More and more birds come out of the reeds. Now, I see a great crested grebe. I notice that these birds stay in a couple. And it's the couple who watches over the babies. One of them has come out and dived down into the water.
[23:09] It stays under the water for quite some time.
[23:20] And it seems to swim underwater, because it came up in a different location than where it dove down. And in its mouth was a fairly big fish, a silvery fish, with orange fins. And then I see it tilt its head back and swallow it whole.
[24:12] And that same grebe, or perhaps it's a partner, has caught another very tiny little fish. A tiny black fish. and that is when I saw the baby come out from the reeds, to take the fish and eat it. The baby looks a bit different to the parents. It has black and white stripes. It's so adorable. A sweet little thing. And the parents have a very pointy beak, and a slanted head.
[25:41] On a deep orange patch on the back of its neck. The baby will eventually look like that, but now it has the plumage of a young one.
[26:15] And earlier, at another place I was sitting, I saw some of these grebes who had younger babies. And at that point, the babies ride on the back of the parrot. And it's so adorable to see these little striped heads poking out, from between the wing feathers. And just now, the sun has come out. And I look up at the clouds and I see them moving. They move quickly, white fluffy clouds floating by.
[27:42] The blue sky beyond, and the sun shining down on the plants, and the water, and all the beings.
[28:05] And there's birds coming and going, several different species of ducks. And they fly in. When they fly toward the water, they put out their little feet and then land. And I see one that's floating in the middle of the water, its head tucked onto its back, having a nap, in the middle of the day. And it's so peaceful, so relaxing sitting here on this bench and.
[29:28] With nature moving all around me, the bird having the nap, enjoying itself, and I wonder how it stays in one spot. I can see the wind rippling the top of the water. And I wonder if maybe the bird is slightly awake, kicking its feet while it sleeps. So it doesn't flow away. And still, the reeds bend and sway in the wind. The water rippling as the wind blows over it.
[30:51] The last of the fluffies blowing through the air off the willows, and still the clouds float by. Beautiful, white, fluffy clouds. Cumulonimbus clouds. And there are some very low, fluffy clouds. And another layer just above that.
[31:45] And those ones are not moving as fast. And then a hobby bird flies by. To catch a dragonfly while in the air and eats it. It's this time of the year when there's starting to be more dragonflies.
[32:36] The little blue damselflies are around, lots of them, electric blue, sitting on the plaits. When I walked to this bench earlier they lift up as I walked by and then, land again, and the longer I sit here the more things come by. Just now, a little reed warbler has landed close by, and begins to trill a song.
[33:50] It's hidden in the reeds, which are bending and swaying, and swaying and bending. And the reed warbler moves with the wind in the reeds. And there's a deep sense of peace, in this place. And off in the distance, I can see a few houses, is a few dwellings.
[34:47] Where there could be people, going about their busy lives. But just here, where I am, There's nobody else, just me on this bench, which is on the earth, by the water, on this island, on this planet, floating around, spinning around through space.
[35:55] I'm just spinning around the big ball of gas, the sun, with all the other planets and the stars, the other galaxies and life forms in the universe. And when I think of it like that, there's something so soothing about that.
[36:46] It's as if all the little things in my head, in my mind, in my life, what do they even mean? When there's the grand dance of the universe going on at the same time. And I sigh.
[37:29] And I'm looking around, thankful for this gift of sight, sound, taste touch and smell, I'm now thankful to be able to witness this beauty, this peace. I feel that I can come to this place and be. And let everything blow away. Blow away. Out of my mind. Out of my heart.
[38:42] Allowing my breath to slow down, be even and steady, matching the pace of nature.
[39:07] The pace of this place, Matching the steadiness and the ease and being. In this place where all the plants grow together.
[39:39] None of them saying anything to hurt each other. Just being together. Being together with the water, with the air, with the earth, with the sky and now the grebes are back, they must have just come from out of the reeds, and the little family of ducks went across, from one side to the other.
[40:46] And all the others that were here a moment ago have gone back into the reeds. So it can be a place of mystery and wonder. I imagine if someone just passed by without stopping.
[41:27] They would only get the tiniest little snapshot of what's happening. But by sitting and observing for a longer amount of time, slowly things are revealed. Ever so slowly, all different birds come out. Different creatures, different beings, different insects, and still the world spins.
[42:35] The grass grows gently, slowly in the sunshine, the water in the rain. The clouds that were here a moment ago have all passed by, and new clouds are going by. The wind blows through the trees. The fluffies float away on the breeze. The sun shining down on everything. On this bench, the bench where I am sat. I'm slowly watching the passage of time.
[44:02] The bench slowly watching the passage of time. The bench which was once a tree, which is now a bench. And it continues to be there and greet people, and offer itself, and be helpful, not asking for anything. Just allowing. Allowing me in this small moment of time to enjoy its comfort.
[45:05] And that, dear ones, was a little bit of what I saw today, sitting outside in that short space of time and sharing with you a glimpse through my little eyes.
[45:42] Gently speaking you to sleep.
[45:51] And as the story comes to a close, you can let it settle somewhere behind you. There's nothing you need to keep, the day has already been set down there's nothing more to carry, you can let everything grow a little quieter now sleep may already be nearby, or here or it may take its time. Either way, you don't need to do anything more.
[47:19] And now, if you're already asleep, keep resting. If you're still awake, that's okay too. You can let this episode play again, or move on to the next one. I'll be right here. Good night.
