Speaker:

Hey, everybody.

2

:

Welcome back to another edition

of the daily Bible podcast.

3

:

He came back.

4

:

Thank you so much.

5

:

You did.

6

:

You said come back and

they did they're here.

7

:

I think we w I mean, we don't know

for sure, but I think so many of

8

:

the same people came back that much.

9

:

I'm sure.

10

:

Hey, next Thursday, you've got one week

to get your turkeys to get your stuff

11

:

in, to get your canned cranberry sauce.

12

:

Cause that's what you need to have.

13

:

And, uh, and get ready for Thanksgiving.

14

:

So make sure that you're

doing that pastoral.

15

:

What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

16

:

I don't have any yet.

17

:

None.

18

:

No, I don't party.

19

:

I have a couple days off.

20

:

So I'm thinking, I'm trying to think about

what, what would make the most sense?

21

:

We don't have any family in the

area except for church family, which

22

:

in many respects is I guess just

the same and in some ways deeper.

23

:

And more profound.

24

:

Uh, so I haven't decided yet.

25

:

I have a couple of people in

mind that I want to make sure

26

:

they have a place to go and.

27

:

Uh, but the most have always,

so generously invited us over.

28

:

So I'm confident we'll be with the

most, at least we're part of the

29

:

day, if not a substantial portion,

but I'm trying to figure out.

30

:

A couple of floaters.

31

:

And offline.

32

:

Good.

33

:

Yeah, we're going to be at home doing

Turkey during the cinnamon rolls.

34

:

Playing football with the church.

35

:

Um, I think on Thursday morning.

36

:

So that should be fun.

37

:

And, uh, watching the

Cowboys lose another game.

38

:

That should be fun too.

39

:

Um, I think.

40

:

Again, probably not though.

41

:

Not, not as much fun.

42

:

Yeah.

43

:

Uh, anyways, it's, uh, my kids

are off all next week, so that's.

44

:

I'm looking forward to that a

little bit of a slower environment.

45

:

Anytime they're not in school, moorings

are a little bit more slow and not as, as

46

:

crazy, not as hectic traffic is better.

47

:

Traffic is better.

48

:

Although we live in an area without

much traffic, which is nice.

49

:

Dr.

50

:

Mohler was talking

about traffic last week.

51

:

16 miles, two hours to go 16 miles.

52

:

I remember some LA traffic was hideous.

53

:

I found it, at least here traffic moves.

54

:

In LA.

55

:

There were times that you just were at

a, you just stopped for 10 minutes at

56

:

a time and didn't move a single inch.

57

:

That's a little bit of an overstatement,

but there are times in the traffic.

58

:

Desktop.

59

:

Yes.

60

:

Yeah.

61

:

I drove.

62

:

When I was doing my demon up at

master seminary, I would drive from

63

:

orange county up to sun valley.

64

:

And I would do that every single day.

65

:

And then I would drive home.

66

:

So I'd leave in the morning.

67

:

I'd drive up there, I'd go to class

and then I'd drive back home, which.

68

:

I mean it, depending on when, in the

morning it was fine because I left

69

:

before everybody else in that meant

I had to leave at like four 30 in the

70

:

morning to get up there, but driving

home at night, it took anywhere from

71

:

two and a half to three hours to get.

72

:

What should be normally, maybe

an hour, hour and a half at most.

73

:

Uh, because traffic was

just miserable, miserable.

74

:

And so I don't miss that.

75

:

I'm glad that's over, but it

was that, or leave my family for

76

:

two weeks and get a hotel up.

77

:

And.

78

:

That area.

79

:

And I'd rather see my family.

80

:

I might be tempted.

81

:

Yeah, briefly as it is.

82

:

All right.

83

:

Let's jump into our reading today.

84

:

We've got acts chapter

13 and acts chapter 14.

85

:

Acts chapter 13 is all about missionaries.

86

:

And so, uh, Garrett and

Kiersten were looking at you.

87

:

This is your chapter here, missionaries

to be, uh, this is about getting

88

:

ready and, and Saul and Barnabas

being sent out as some of the first

89

:

missionaries of the early church.

90

:

Um, In acts chapter 13,

verses one through three.

91

:

Uh, we find them being sent

out there from Antioch.

92

:

Antioch was going to

become their home base.

93

:

Now one commentator made this point.

94

:

I think it's worth drawing, bringing up.

95

:

They said Jerusalem was still the

mother church, meaning that the base

96

:

of the church at large, the church

spread out from Jerusalem, but the

97

:

missionary church now was Antioch.

98

:

And so furthermore, he goes on

to say, Peter was no longer the

99

:

central figure here that the action

is going to shift away from Peter.

100

:

Not completely, but mostly.

101

:

And Saul is going to

become the central figure.

102

:

Now you may be wondering why

are we still calling him Saul?

103

:

Isn't he Paul, now that he's converted.

104

:

Uh, that that's not.

105

:

His Christian name?

106

:

That's his Greek name?

107

:

And so when Saul is still going to the

Jews, which by and large, he still is.

108

:

He saw when he turns and begins to

really just go to the Gentiles and

109

:

you'll notice the shift in the text.

110

:

In fact, it may even be in our chapter.

111

:

Um, he shifts DePaul, it'll

say Saul also called Paul.

112

:

Now that, that is just simply the

designation of his Greek name,

113

:

whereas his Hebrew name was Saul.

114

:

So there's the difference there in

case you're wondering, is this as

115

:

Christian name versus non-Christian name?

116

:

No, this is just his Hebrew

name versus Greek name.

117

:

Their first stop is going to be

an area called Cyprus in that

118

:

is in verses four through 12.

119

:

Uh, this begins the missionary

journey, the first missionary

120

:

journey he's going to take multiple

three missionary journeys here.

121

:

And so this is the first one and it's

going to span chapter 13, first four,

122

:

all the way through 14 verse 26.

123

:

Uh, no.

124

:

In 13 five, we have the presence

of John also known as John mark.

125

:

He's the author of the gospel of mark.

126

:

He's going to become a catalyst for the

breakup eventually of Paul and Barnabas.

127

:

So he's there with them right now, but

we're going to find out what happens.

128

:

And John mark is going to be

the catalyst for the breakup of

129

:

Paul and Barnabas eventually.

130

:

And their separation now.

131

:

That'll come full circle, but

notice in verse five, we get the

132

:

reference to John or John mark there.

133

:

Verses six through 12 while in Cyprus,

they encounter opposition there from

134

:

a man named, uh, Simon BARR, Jesus, or

not Simon barges, but just Barjesus or

135

:

Lemus was his Greek name there who did

not want them there sharing the gospel.

136

:

And so this one man was a magician and

he clearly was, was not a believer.

137

:

And so we find him opposing the

disciples there, look at verse nine.

138

:

This is where the comment is made.

139

:

Salt is not going to be

Paul from here on out.

140

:

Saul, also known as Paul.

141

:

So there's the transition

I was just talking about.

142

:

Uh, verses 10 through 11 by Paul by

the Lord strikes and Lemus blind.

143

:

And which is a poetic judgment against

one who had deceived so many people, the

144

:

one who had blinded somebody, people he's

going to be himself blinded now by God.

145

:

Uh, and then the original target of

their witnessing, which is the proconsul.

146

:

He responds in faith after seeing this

and receives the teaching of the Lord.

147

:

So God can I overcome some

opposition early on here in the

148

:

first missionary journey at Cyprus.

149

:

From here they go on to the other

Antioch, which is Persidian Antioch.

150

:

Uh, and here we find in verse

13, John Mark's departure.

151

:

This has mentioned right here.

152

:

This is that issue.

153

:

Paul disagreed with this.

154

:

He looked at this as.

155

:

Uh, you know, John mark couldn't

handle the opposition, couldn't

156

:

handle the difficulty and we see that

there was opposition and difficulty.

157

:

And so he leaves and he goes

back and, and that's going to

158

:

really not sit well with Paul.

159

:

Whereas Barnabas is going to be

a little bit more sympathetic

160

:

come the next missionary journey.

161

:

He's going to want to bring John

mark back and Paul's going to say,

162

:

no, we're not going to do that.

163

:

Uh, verse 14, Antioch and passivity, as I

mentioned is different from the Antioch.

164

:

That was the home base for Paul

and Barnabas from once they set

165

:

out for the missionary journey.

166

:

And so this is another location and

here Paul is going to preach the

167

:

gospel and that's verses 15 through 43.

168

:

And he does so beginning with the

old Testament and showing how Jesus

169

:

came as the Messiah and fulfillment

of prophecy after prophecy,

170

:

after prophecy, after prophecy.

171

:

But I want you to note the longest section

that it gets here verses 30 through 37 is.

172

:

Focused specifically on the resurrection.

173

:

That's where Paul gives the, the meat

of his emphasis here is focused on

174

:

the resurrection of Jesus because

without the resurrection is Paul's

175

:

going to write in first Corinthians 15.

176

:

None of this matters.

177

:

And then in verses 38 through 39, we

get the actual gospel being laid out.

178

:

Let it be known that the through this

man through Jesus forgiveness of sins,

179

:

that proclaimed to you, everyone who

believes is freed from everything,

180

:

which you could not be freed from.

181

:

By the law of Moses.

182

:

So cool, because this is what he's

going to write about enrollments.

183

:

So we're seeing Pauline theology

even here in the book of acts.

184

:

As we read through these

things, highly recommend you

185

:

to have a map as you read this.

186

:

It's one thing to read about the first

missionary journey in acts 13 and 14.

187

:

It's a whole other to kind of trace

along with your finger, as you read

188

:

where Paul and Barnabas are headed.

189

:

Uh, and for the present time,

John mark, until he leaves

190

:

and pedophilia and heads back.

191

:

So you would do well.

192

:

If you don't have a study

Bible, usually most.

193

:

It's a study Bibles and

thick premium Bibles.

194

:

We'll have maps in the back that

will trace his first, second

195

:

and third missionary journeys.

196

:

Uh, we would highly

recommend that you do this.

197

:

And in fact, On top of that, I would

recommend that you open up a modern day,

198

:

apple maps, Google maps, you seek and

see what the, the modern cities are.

199

:

It'll give you a better sense

of the flow of what's happening.

200

:

And even when you think about

Cyrus and Paul is out on the

201

:

island of Cyprus, rather Cyprus.

202

:

Uh, where he's going,

uh, Salamis or salamis.

203

:

I'm not sure how to say that, but I'm

sure someone will correct me on that.

204

:

And path hosts are kind of far apart.

205

:

One's on one side of the

coast, one's on the other.

206

:

And from there they hand it,

they, they sail over to pemphigus.

207

:

So you would do well to have a map.

208

:

That would be good thing to add to

your study this morning or these

209

:

following mornings as we work

our way through the book of acts.

210

:

Yep.

211

:

Yeah.

212

:

Great, great recommendation there.

213

:

Uh, the, when he finishes speaking

that the Jews want him to come back.

214

:

They want him to come

back the next Sabbath?

215

:

Well, in verses 44 through 52,

when they do that, when they come

216

:

back, the next Sabbath, the Jews

there, they began to oppose him.

217

:

And so his enemies are there.

218

:

So.

219

:

Th they, they shift and they turn to

the Gentiles and that's going to be

220

:

something that's going to be a sharp turn.

221

:

Eventually that they're going to be

saying, Hey, we're done with this

222

:

completely, but they're beginning

to go towards the Gentiles.

223

:

And we find in acts chapter 13, verse 48,

the, the statement that is such a profound

224

:

statement, where it says as many as

were appointed to eternal life believed.

225

:

And I just, again, I don't

want to belabor this.

226

:

I just want us to look at

the simple statement there.

227

:

As many as were appointed.

228

:

Okay.

229

:

That is a passive verb.

230

:

Okay.

231

:

That means that the action

is happening to them.

232

:

And who's the one who is a

pointing them to eternal life.

233

:

The answer would be God.

234

:

So as many who believed it's those

that got appointed to eternal life.

235

:

Did God appoint everyone to eternal life?

236

:

The answer there is no.

237

:

So is everyone going to

believe the answer is no.

238

:

Who believes the ones that God.

239

:

Appointed that informed some of

our understanding of salvation,

240

:

our, as it's called our soteriology

in our understanding of God's

241

:

sovereignty involved in salvation.

242

:

From here, they flee the persecution that

is happening there in Antioch capacity.

243

:

And they end up moving on to another area.

244

:

Now in acts chapter 14, still part of this

first missionary journey called I conium.

245

:

Unium I conium, I conium

is about 90 miles.

246

:

If you're looking at your maps there, 90

miles Southeast of Antioch, and it was a

247

:

city with Roman connections and located

on a major trade route in this region.

248

:

And so though it took a little while

for the opposition to become serious

249

:

enough to threaten their wellbeing.

250

:

It even reached that point as well.

251

:

And so they're there for a time period,

but man here comes the opposition again.

252

:

And remember God in part is using this

opposition to get the gospel spread

253

:

further and further and further.

254

:

So for my conium, what happens,

they go to another area called

255

:

Lisha is about 20 miles Southeast,

even of Iconium and Derby, which

256

:

they're going to get to as well as

another 58 miles further than that.

257

:

All of this, by the way,

is the region of glacier.

258

:

So the epistle written to the

Galatians is written to churches

259

:

that are located in this particular

region of, uh, what's modern day.

260

:

Um, essentially Turkey is

the modern day area of this.

261

:

Acts 14, nine.

262

:

Notice it says.

263

:

That that as Paul heals, the man here, it

says, seeing that he had faith to be made.

264

:

Well, I thought that was interesting past.

265

:

I'd love to get your thoughts on that.

266

:

How does he see in a man listening

to him, see his faith, such that he

267

:

would be wanting to heal him here.

268

:

That'd be pay close attention.

269

:

I'm going to be super definitive on this.

270

:

I have no idea.

271

:

Yeah, fair.

272

:

That's both of us here.

273

:

But something about this man.

274

:

Uh, led Paul and maybe it's the,

the wisdom, the insight that he

275

:

has as the spirit dwells him.

276

:

Is able to say, Hey look,

this guy's got faith here.

277

:

And so, um, Paul engages with him and

he sees that he has faced to me made,

278

:

well, verse 10, he says, stand up.

279

:

Right.

280

:

And walking feet.

281

:

He does.

282

:

So he stands up and begins to walk.

283

:

Now the people see this and they go

crazy and they immediately come to Paul

284

:

and Barnabas and they attribute God.

285

:

Titles to them.

286

:

Barnabas.

287

:

They called Zeus and Paul Hermes.

288

:

Uh, now.

289

:

I would think that Paul would be Zeus and

Barnabas would be Hermes because Paul is

290

:

the leader and we know that he wrote a lot

more of the, the letters, but pastor outta

291

:

any insight into the significance of these

names here between Paul and Barnabas.

292

:

I wondered if maybe what's happening

is a slow turning of the, of the roles.

293

:

And Barnabas and Paul.

294

:

Are listed in, I think, order

of importance at this point.

295

:

So you'll notice in verse

14, but when the apostles.

296

:

That's interesting to

note as well, parcels.

297

:

Um, Barnabas and Paul

Barnabas is listed first.

298

:

And so it seems at this point

in their ministry under the

299

:

first missionary journey and

Barnabas is still the key player.

300

:

And it's not until I think

the second missionary journey

301

:

where the roles began to turn.

302

:

And Paul is considered more of the,

I don't know the leader, the senior,

303

:

even though he's, he's not the

senior in Barnabas to his credit, it

304

:

seems is going to be more than okay.

305

:

With letting him do that.

306

:

So that's, I think what's

happening behind this.

307

:

That's my best guess.

308

:

What do you think about that?

309

:

Yeah, I agree with that.

310

:

And maybe even solidifying

that, so they call Paul Hermes,

311

:

Hermes known also is mercury.

312

:

Uh, he was believed to

be the messenger of Zeus.

313

:

And so he's the one that, that

was the God who was the leader in

314

:

speaking as one author, put it.

315

:

And Paul's the one doing

a lot of the speaking.

316

:

And so they may have assumed, okay.

317

:

Barnabas.

318

:

Yeah, he's the head.

319

:

Paul's the messenger of the one that.

320

:

Is the head, the one of greater authority.

321

:

And so Barnabas is use Paul your

Hermes because you're the one

322

:

speaking on behalf of zoos here.

323

:

Uh, but yeah, I think

you're right on that.

324

:

Uh, verses 14 through 18, then the

response from the apostles is not great.

325

:

Awesome.

326

:

I'll be as easy to be bothered.

327

:

At UBI Hermes, and let's hang out here.

328

:

In fact it's, as they tear their

ropes, which was a symbol of mourning.

329

:

Uh, and so they're grieved over

this, on behalf of the people there.

330

:

And they immediately move to put an

end to the notion that they're anything

331

:

but men and messengers of the gospel.

332

:

And so that's, they deflect the praise.

333

:

We talked about how Herod

Agrippa did not do that.

334

:

And what happened to him here?

335

:

You see the opposite of that.

336

:

When they're saying, man, we are

just simply men don't do this.

337

:

This is wrong.

338

:

Well verses 19 through 23.

339

:

Uh, the opposition that they had

been experiencing, other places, it

340

:

finally gets to where they are now.

341

:

It gets to Lister there.

342

:

They follow them all the way down.

343

:

And this Jewish opposition.

344

:

That had had followed them there.

345

:

Uh, they are, they stir the crowds

up and they notice they, they

346

:

take Paul out and they stone him.

347

:

To the point that they believe in to be

dead and drag his body out of the city.

348

:

And then it just simply says he gets up.

349

:

He gets up.

350

:

That's simple, but, but pastor, rod.

351

:

They knew what they were doing.

352

:

Yes.

353

:

As far as stoning goes, this is

not like, they were like, oh, I

354

:

guess we didn't finish them off.

355

:

They had done this before.

356

:

I assume.

357

:

Uh, almost certainly, uh, this,

this was a common way of execution.

358

:

So I'm with you on that.

359

:

Whether it was that God preserved

him from dying or whether God

360

:

resurrected him from death.

361

:

We can't quite tell, but.

362

:

There's something happening

here that God preserved him.

363

:

And clearly when Jesus says to two a.

364

:

Mercy.

365

:

Why am I forgetting his name?

366

:

Um, the guy that he sent Paul to are sent

to Paul when he was on the street called

367

:

straight in a nice and nice, thank you.

368

:

Uh, he told him to nice for, he

must, I'm going to show him how much

369

:

he must suffer from my namesake.

370

:

I see this as part of that.

371

:

So God's purpose for Paul's

life was going to suffer on

372

:

behalf of Christ and for Christ.

373

:

And this is included in that yeah.

374

:

A hundred percent.

375

:

Yeah.

376

:

When you get to second Corinthians

chapter 11 and we're going to get

377

:

through Paul's resume of suffering there.

378

:

I I'm sure this is part of, in fact, he

referenced as being stoned at that point.

379

:

But it gets up.

380

:

That's amazing.

381

:

Um, but also know the

opposition that follows him.

382

:

It's just a reminder and we're going to

get there in John's gospel, in the not

383

:

too distant future, either people hate

Jesus and because people hate Jesus.

384

:

People hate people that love Jesus.

385

:

And so we see that here, the opposition

is willing to travel miles and

386

:

remember they didn't have cars, they

didn't have public transportation.

387

:

They're probably on foot.

388

:

And they're walking all the way

they're wise so that they can oppose.

389

:

The gospel oppose Christ, but he

gets up and you'd think that maybe

390

:

Paul's like, oh, you know what?

391

:

I'm gonna retire from missionary journey

for, for the remainder of the time here.

392

:

Nope.

393

:

They move on to Derby and

there he keeps on preaching.

394

:

And then they come back to LR and I

conium in Antioch, all these areas,

395

:

he had faced opposition, they come

back and what did they do there?

396

:

They strengthened the

believers that are there.

397

:

And so they're focused on, Hey,

we need to build up the church.

398

:

Part of that looks like acts 14, 23.

399

:

They're putting elders in place.

400

:

They're making sure that the church has

polity and leadership and that it is going

401

:

to be governed well, uh, in their absence.

402

:

One quick note here after Paul

rises up, I want to point out that

403

:

he goes back into the same city.

404

:

Uh, so before he goes to Derby,

he goes back into the same city.

405

:

So it's not like he's

trying to evade or elude.

406

:

The persecution that

they're sending his way.

407

:

I think that's more fascinating to me.

408

:

This guy's like, you know what?

409

:

You stone me.

410

:

I'm coming back into the city.

411

:

And you want to try this again?

412

:

I guess.

413

:

Yeah.

414

:

But then he goes, the next day he goes

to Derby, which I think is important.

415

:

He, he, he faces this head on

there's times when he runs away.

416

:

Yeah.

417

:

We can put it that way.

418

:

And there's other times where he stays

and I think the spirit gives us wisdom

419

:

to know which one is the appropriate

one at, at, at that certain timeframe.

420

:

Yup.

421

:

Yeah, I would agree.

422

:

Versus 24 through 28, then the

missionaries they return and they're

423

:

preaching the gospel as they go.

424

:

They return all the way back to Antioch

from their home base and they return

425

:

preaching the gospel on the way back.

426

:

And they gathered the church together

to give their slideshow about how

427

:

their missionary journey went.

428

:

And, uh, now they give the

report on how everything went

429

:

and they fill everybody in.

430

:

And that brings the first

missionary journey to a conclusion

431

:

here in acts chapter 14.

432

:

All right.

433

:

Y'all let's pray.

434

:

And then we'll be done

with another episode.

435

:

Got we want the boldness of Paul

and the, the passion to preach

436

:

the gospel that Paul has here.

437

:

We want the humility of Paul and

of Barnabas to, as we talked about

438

:

yesterday, deflect the glory back to

you, but got to help us to have the zeal

439

:

of the passion that says no matter what

happens, we want to preach the gospel.

440

:

None of us, we don't think at least.

441

:

Are going to be stone today for opening

up and telling somebody else about Jesus.

442

:

And so how much more should we take

advantage of the freedoms that we have in

443

:

the low cost that it really is to us to.

444

:

To tell somebody how much Christ loves

them by pointing them to the gospel.

445

:

Let us be faithful to do that.

446

:

As a church, we pray in Jesus name.

447

:

Amen.

448

:

All right, I'll keep it in your Bibles

and tune in again tomorrow for another

449

:

edition of the daily Bible podcasts.

450

:

Y'all come back now.

451

:

You hear bye.
