Foreign Terry Cook and you are listening to the One Minute Driving and Through the Tips Podcast, a show that helps you become a better ADI in under two minutes.

And today is tip number 54.
Speaker A:
And I want to talk about defensive driving from day one.
Speaker A:
Now, as instructors, we're not just teaching people how to drive, we also teach them how to stay safe on the road.
Speaker A:
So defensive driving should be a priority from that very first lesson.
Speaker A:
Now, it's not necessarily something that needs to be taught as its own lesson we can incorporate into everything we do.
Speaker A:
So for example, on a first lesson, we'll often get students saying that they want to wait until the car has passed before they set off, even if you know that it's safe.
Speaker A:
Now, this can be used as a starting point for defensive driving.
Speaker A:
So yes, we want them setting off promptly and not causing obstructions on the road.
Speaker A:
But that student, considering the impact they may have on other drivers, should be encouraged.
Speaker A:
So encourage your students to scan ahead, anticipate hazards, and always have an out in case something goes wrong.
Speaker A:
Encourage them to anticipate but not assume what other drivers will do.
Speaker A:
And remember, a proactive driver is a safe driver.
Speaker A:
And the earlier students build these habits, the the better.
Speaker A:
