00:00:00 Sayan: There's a quiet truth about the self that most of us spent years avoiding. It's a pattern that we live inside are actually not the ones we choose. They were somewhere some time ago, inherited, borrowed, maybe absorbed from family or from culture, from society, from the daily messages that shaped us before we had the vocabulary to even question them. And today we are talking about that.
00:00:33 Sayan: Welcome back to another episode of the Soul Mirror Podcast. I'm your host, and this is the show where we have reflective and thoughtful conversations about the deeper layers of who we are beneath the surface, beyond the roles that we play. We are here to help one another see ourselves more clearly. So please welcome my guest today, doctor. Liz. Janelle. Doctor Liz, thanks for being here. I think, uh, there's a particular kind of, um, you know. flavor to this conversation because the inner work, uh, is I think that is something that is really overlooked. Um, so it's going to be, I think, a very important conversation. So welcome to the show. I'm honored to have you here.
00:01:15 Dr Lise Janelle: you for having me. I was in Hyderabad, I think maybe ten years ago or eight years ago at the First World Parliament on spirituality. And, uh, it was interesting to be there. And there were thousands of people in the auditorium. And, uh, so I think I can see that in the Indian culture, actually, spirituality is quite important. And I was surprised by the young people that came to me afterwards, and they were saying, please come and do more of these things. We really need to talk to our parents about this. So it's kind of cool that I'm here and speaking with you now.
00:02:00 Sayan: Wow. I mean, that's really motivational. So before we even jump in, dive deeper into this conversation, a little disclaimer for all the listeners who have just tuned in that some statements may reflect personal belief and experiences and are presented as individual views and not medical advice. So listeners should please consult qualified professionals for any medical condition. So with that being said, um, I think yeah, doctor, you are on point, right? Uh, it's the young generation, uh, that I think is starting to recognize the flaws with respect to, uh, how our parents have, uh, you know, have told us to see it. So I want to start there. I want to start with some basics because I think the right place to begin with would be your story. So could you take us back into that part of your life where you first started seeing your own patterns clearly enough to actually consider releasing them? You know, what did you start to see in yourself that you had been living inside for years And, uh, maybe what did you not understand about it at the at that time?
00:03:04 Dr Lise Janelle: Well, I, well, I've always been driven to success to live an amazing life, I guess because I came from a very humble background and we didn't have much when I grew up. And I love traveling. I love classical music, learning, growing and evolving. And then I left my small town where everybody spoke French, and I moved to Toronto, where people speak English and opened up a whole brand new world. And I studied to be a doctor of chiropractic. And, um, I was, I was living the life like I kept learning, growing, evolving. I was successful as a chiropractor. I was a Canadian rowing champion. I had the great boyfriend. Oh, everything was going on. And then in nineteen eighty eight, um, my father was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was given nine months to live. That was three weeks before my sister's wedding. A week after my sister's wedding. My twenty one year old brother died in a car accident. And then before, within a month of this, my eight year relationship to the man I thought I was going to marry ended. And it was like, oh, oh, oh. So the pain, the pain of what was happening. And I use if people will ever watch it, I know we're not necessarily going to be video, but if you imagine the yin and the yang when, when something painful happened, like it often is what drives us, it drives us to to do something about it. So that pain drove me to go on a quest to understand how do you live life so that when these things happen, because it's not if they're going to happen, it's when they happen.
00:05:04 Sayan: When they're going to happen. Yeah.
00:05:06 Dr Lise Janelle: How do you live life so you don't go flat like a pancake? Like what do you do? So you don't because you want to grow wiser. And, you know, as you get older, you don't want like, because it's guaranteed the more years you live, the more chances you have of getting hurt. So you don't want to shut yourself down completely. So how do you live life so that when challenges happen, you actually can still navigate and live an amazing life? So that's, that was my story. And then by coincidence, the year after, as I'm looking for meaning, I found two mentors. Both of them were chiropractors. One is John DeMartini, and he taught me the power of gratitude. And the other one is Scott Walker. And he taught me n e t, which is a mind body method that allows me to find the moment when you store a belief about yourself that gets stuck in your physiology, that then creates feelings for you. So I ended up combining those two methods together, and I created a method called the Heart Freedom method. It's pretty good. Jack Canfield, the co-author of The Chicken Soup for the Soul Theory. Do you know the Chicken Soup for the soul series?
00:06:21 Sayan: Uh, no, I this is my first time hearing it, but we'll check it out. What? What about it?
00:06:26 Dr Lise Janelle: So? Well, it's stories from people who had experiences that transforms the moment. So it's got it. So and they sold like, I think like five hundred million books. And, um, the Jack Canfield also wrote a book called The Success Principle. So it's been in the transformational world for fifty years. And he asked me to write a book with him about my method because he says it's the missing link he'd been looking for and fifty years of doing transformational work. So I'm writing a book. It's finished now, almost. We're just wrapping it up. And, um, so that's been my journey and it's rich. I would not have chosen all these painful events that happened in nineteen eighty eight, but I'm sitting in front of you as a result of them. It's the yin and the yang, the dark and the light combined together.
00:07:23 Sayan: Wow. That's, I think, uh, a lot of lived experience right there. And, uh, I think, uh, exactly why we are here today. Um, and yeah, uh, I'm glad that you are grateful for everything that has happened to you, because if that wouldn't have happened. Um, so, you know, I mean, it's all about, uh, being grateful. I think, uh, at every time because, uh, people think if that wouldn't have That happened, but I think if that wouldn't have happened, then something worse could have happened to you. So because, you know, there's a rock bottom. Uh, I think even deeper than the current bottom that you're in, right? So you never know. You would never know. I mean, um, so I'm.
00:08:09 Dr Lise Janelle: I, that's, that's, that's the thing, that's why I like using the yin and the yang because people think like, I, you know, I do public speaking and I've asked thousands of people, raise your hand if you've never had a huge challenge in your life. And guess what? Out of thousands of people, only one person raised their hand. And it was a young girl. And she said, me? And she said, I'm scared of what's going to happen to me when I face a big challenge. So if you're a smart human being, the idea is not to avoid challenges is to learn to use the fun parts of life and the challenging parts of life to constantly grow and love and wisdom. That's why I use the yin and the yang all the time because nobody, nobody has more pain than pleasure, more pleasure than pain. We just need to learn to use what's going our way or not going our way to our advantage. Like I have a saying, it's like things don't happen to you. They happen for you. Things don't happen to you. They happen for you. And once you start living life from that point, you increase your self-worth and life becomes an adventure.
00:09:17 Sayan: Yeah. Indeed. I think that is a solid note to start this up on. So I want to slow down on a deeper layer. So I think the patterns that we carry are not just preferences, right? Um, there's somewhere part of our nervous system, you know, inherited responses as I spoke earlier about that, um, maybe learned identities that we have picked up, uh, as a by product of the society. So could you tell us a little bit about, about that inner architecture, like what is actually happening underneath that surface when someone has been living inside a pattern for decades? And what do you think most people misunderstand or not understand about the inner life of those patterns?
00:10:06 Dr Lise Janelle: Well, you may have heard of Pavlov's dog. Mhm.
00:10:11 Sayan: Yeah.
00:10:12 Dr Lise Janelle: Pavlov was a Russian scientist, and he had dogs. The dogs would be hungry. He would bring food to the dog. The dog would salivate. He would ring a bell. And after a while, he didn't need to bring food. He just had to ring the bell for the dogs to salivate. And we are the same as human beings. We are exactly the same and we associate a response to a conditioning. For example, the first you were asking me how did I start doing this? So, you know, I first time I learned how to do mind body work, I'm testing myself on this statement I want to be successful. And lo and behold, we found out that yeah, consciously for sure. I want to be successful. Who who doesn't want to be successful? But subconsciously I had a different story. Your subconscious mind is not the enemy. The conscious mind is to keep you alive. You are alive because you have a subconscious mind that's constantly scanning around you, your world, to make sure you don't die, that you don't get yourself in trouble. It's constantly trying to save you. So the first time I did the work, I checked myself. I want to be successful. And lo and behold, it went back. And it's when you do the work, it's really cool because I went back, I'm five years old and I remember like, I'm five years old, I'm coloring in my coloring book. My sister is three and a half also coloring in a coloring book. I'm older, so I finished before her. So I show it to my mother, my mom, and my mom says, well done, This you color between the lines. It's beautiful. But my little sister, she couldn't color between the lines. So now she ran away crying. So now I'm standing there thinking like, wow, this is not fun. When I'm successful, I hurt other people's feelings. And worse, because it's always about us. I end up alone. And if you only knew the number of times, because I have over one hundred and twenty six thousand one on one of these stories, I'm telling you like I've done this over the years, since nineteen eighty nine, before you were born, I started doing this work and I see patterns one after the other. And this is such a common one subconsciously, like we're social beings and we don't want to stand out. We want to fit in the tribe. We don't want to be ostracized because that way, you know, biologically speaking, it means you could die if you're out of the group. So we will. The more you associate danger or pain to something you want consciously, it will hold you back. You will sabotage yourself because, relatively speaking, your conscious mind has goals, dreams, and aspirations is the size of a football. But the subconscious mind that's there to keep you alive. The football field. So which one do you think is going to win every time? It's going to hold you back because it thinks it's not safe. There are three clues. You have a subconscious belief working against you. Number one, you know what needs to be done, but you're not doing it. You know the famous procrastination. If I just sat down right now and studied, I know I could get my diploma, but then I would be the only one in my family to ever get that. Oh, well, maybe that's not so good. Or if I picked up the phone right now to call this client, my business would go up. But now suddenly I have to go eat cookies or go on social media, you know? So we do all these things and it's not because you're lazy. It's not because you lack willpower. It's because the Pavlovian bell is ringing and saying, this is dangerous for you. Clue number two, you do what needs to be done, but it uses so much more energy. It's exhausting. Like a paper. Instead of taking you an hour to write your paper, it takes you three hours. And that's not fun if it's one paper once in a while. But imagine you have a business you're building or a relationship you're in, and it's like three years, four years, five years. It just decreases your energy because the football is dragging the football field like you're constantly using your willpower to push, push, push, push. Clue number three. And this one is really annoying to people who want to live a great life. You're driven, you take all kinds of actions. You follow the recipe from the gurus, but you get the opposite results to what you want. And now you start to think, well, maybe I'm just unlucky. Maybe I was born under an unlucky star. Maybe it's for other people and it's not for me. It has nothing to do with it. I am convinced if you have a dream within your heart and it's not your emotions but your heart talking to you, you're supposed to have it. Except you need to find the beliefs that are holding you back from fulfilling your purpose, your potential in life. So the good news is it's not because you're unlucky. It's not because you are not supposed to have a great life. It's just because your subconscious believes that there's a problem. And that's where I created the heart freedom method. And it's not complicated. It takes ten minutes to do like, I have one of my coaches because I train coaches in my method, one of my coaches, her daughter was four years old and she was using it on herself. So wow, you don't need to be, you know, a rocket scientist to do it.
00:16:15 Sayan: Wow. I mean, that was spot on the way that you articulated and also put forth those signs. I think that is a huge message for the listeners who have stuck with us till this point. So before we wrap this off, uh, would love to ask for people who actually wants to understand this, uh, framework and just connect with you and find your work and, uh, take help from what you have built. What's the best place for them to go find you at?
00:16:48 Dr Lise Janelle: Well, uh, one thing you can start, you can start with my book conversation with the heart. You can see it behind me. My book, conversation with the heart is a really good book. It will give you a conscious understanding of what it takes to live a great life. When my book with Jack comes out, uh, it's going to be called unstuck, but it's not out yet. And that will give you the subconscious part. So you to be successful, you need to consciously understand what it takes to live a great life. You also need to know about the subconscious mind when you have those two tools. Great. So you can go on my website. Uh.
00:17:25 Sayan: When does that, when does that come out?
00:17:28 Dr Lise Janelle: Well, I don't know. It depends on the publishers and, you know, editing and all these things. So hopefully this, uh, this, this year would be kind of so you can go on my website. Center for Heart Living dot com or doctor dot com. It's the same website. And, uh, you can see all the things. I have all kinds of programs for all kinds of budgets and people can do work with me remotely. I do work on Zoom. You don't have to be face to face with me. Or you can send an email to success at doctor Janelle dot com. And, uh, diamond, my person will guide you, help you decide what would be the best thing for you.
00:18:16 Sayan: Brilliant. Uh, and thanks. Thanks for, uh, spreading the light. So would have the details in the show notes that people can, uh, refer to when they're reaching out to you. Um, and with that, uh, doctor Liz, before we wrap this up, I would love to ask you if you can, uh, because I think we talked about what the mind is, uh, really looking for, like the patterns that it's trying to understand. But if I had to ask you one last question on behalf of the listeners, I would want to I would love to ask you. Right. Uh, if, uh, you could speak to all the listeners who are listening to this today, what would you, uh, tell them about how to perhaps outgrow the hardest times of your life? Uh, you know, what would you want to say to them? Like.
00:19:11 Dr Lise Janelle: All right.
00:19:12 Sayan: In a sentence or two.
00:19:15 Dr Lise Janelle: When the challenge happens, take a deep breath in and then go. Since I'm worthy of love, how am I going to use this to my advantage? There's only two reasons why you face a challenge. Number one, you're being asked to master something because otherwise, obviously it wouldn't be a challenge. You would have mastered it. Or it's sending you in a direction that you don't know you need to go. Just like me and my story when I was a kid, you know, all these things that happened to me. I would never be who I am today without this. So when you face a challenge, take a deep breath. Since I'm worthy of love, how am I going to use this to my advantage? Because remember the yin and the yang. As intense, the dark as beautiful, the light can come out of it if you use it properly.
00:20:07 Sayan: Love that. And I think that is what was missing, uh, in this, in this episode. So, uh, doctor Lee, thank you so much for sharing that because I think that really lands and the understanding that, uh, any kind of relapse is not the failure of your hard work or your inner work. I think it is just, uh, that part of you. Yeah. Actually, uh, learn the new pattern and takes any kind of any kind of fear ultimately or shame of. So that is what I think most of us would be sitting of or need to sit with after or as we wrap this up. But folks, uh, to all of you, as I said before, I'll link the details in the show notes so that you could reach out to Doctor Liz and her team. And, uh, thanks for joining us today on this conversation on this podcast, because I think this is exactly the kind of conversation that it was built for, you know, honest, reflective, and unafraid of, uh, the reflective, deeper layers. So to whoever is listening to this right now, especially the ones who are just maybe beginning to see themselves more clearly, or maybe finding the right set of reasons or the wrong set of reasons, uh, whatever spot you might be in folks. Right? Uh, I just would want to leave you with this, that the patterns that you're seeing today are not who you are. They are what you have been carrying. Maybe. Right. So I think that kindness with which you set them down is or would be the same kindness that has been waiting to welcome you home. So that is what I would love to leave you with today as we wrap this up. But with that, folks, this has been saying on this podcast and we'll see you in the next one really soon.
