Shownotes

What if our biggest blind spots have nothing to do with our eyes?

In John 9, Jesus gives sight to a man born blind. The disciples ask whose sin caused his condition. The Pharisees question the healing. As the man comes to recognize who Jesus is, others resist what the miracle reveals.

In “Come and See Miracles,” Part 7 of our journey through the Gospel of John, we explore Jesus’ response to suffering, the temptation to assign blame, and how our assumptions can get in the way of belief.

Beginning with a personal journey through eye disease and surgeries, this message connects physical sight with our need for spiritual light. Jesus invites us to trust Him, respond to His words, and bring His light into our families, workplaces, and communities.

Scripture: John 9

For reflection: Where might your assumptions be keeping you from seeing Jesus more clearly?

Speaker:

Dr. Gregg Marutzky:

Speaker:

One or two?

Speaker:

Two.

Speaker:

One or two?

Speaker:

Two or one?

Speaker:

One.

Speaker:

How many of you know what I'm talking about?

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

The eye exam

Speaker:

You go to the optometrist, you go to the ophthalmologist, they give you one lens

Speaker:

and they say, "Is it this, number one?

Speaker:

Or which is better, number two?

Speaker:

Which is better, number one or number two?"

Speaker:

Both.

Speaker:

I have had so many, many eye exams in my life.

Speaker:

Many of you, uh, may not know that, uh, I got an eye disease when I was about 30.

Speaker:

Had 20/20 vision before that, and at 30, uh, I was starting to lose

Speaker:

my sight, and I couldn't see, and I thought I just needed some new glasses.

Speaker:

Cathy's uncle was a optometrist, so I went to him and he said, "Greg, I think there's

Speaker:

something a little more seriously wrong.

Speaker:

You're gonna have to go to an ophthalmologist.

Speaker:

That's an MD that deals with eyes."

Speaker:

And that started my journey for about 20 years of going to specialists, and

Speaker:

I had a, uh, transplant in my left eye.

Speaker:

So if you don't want me to see, me to see you, sit on this side

Speaker:

of the auditorium, all right?

Speaker:

But, uh, I had a transplant that failed.

Speaker:

And, uh, so I've kept this eye as a spare tire my, uh, whole life.

Speaker:

It's not black.

Speaker:

Uh, I can see light in it.

Speaker:

I can see some things, but, uh, uh, I know what it's like, like to be in darkness.

Speaker:

I know what it's like to be in darkness spiritually.

Speaker:

I know what it's like to be in darkness even physically.

Speaker:

When I've come out of surgery at times on my eyes and been able to see, that's

Speaker:

one of the most euphoric feelings.

Speaker:

Tears come to your eyes that … And you're so hopeful

Speaker:

that everything's gonna be better.

Speaker:

And it's gotten better.

Speaker:

I have gotten by.

Speaker:

I remember sitting on the edge of our bed in, uh, Boulder at just,

Speaker:

uh, about 30, and just crying, thinking, "I'm gonna go blind.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna be able to drive.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna be able to preach.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna be able to read."

Speaker:

And here I am at my ripe, mature age, and I can still see.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

So I get to preach today, amen.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

Rejoice with me.

Speaker:

Amen.

Speaker:

Rejoice with those who droi- rejoice.

Speaker:

But I get to talk about Jesus is the light, and that's very personal to

Speaker:

me because light means sight for me.

Speaker:

Light means sight.

Speaker:

Darkness cannot drive out the darkness, only light can do that.

Speaker:

Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that, Martin Luther King.

Speaker:

1 John 1:5, "The light shines in the darkness, and the

Speaker:

darkness has not overcome it."

Speaker:

Praise the Lord.

:

28, "For it is you who light my lamp.

:

The Lord my God lights the darkness."

Francis Bacon:

"In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness

Francis Bacon:

must be present," unfortunately.

Francis Bacon:

"Weeping may endure for the night, but joy comes in the morning," Psalms 30:5.

Francis Bacon:

Maybe you know, have to know the darkness before you can

Francis Bacon:

really appreciate the light.

Francis Bacon:

We have to start viewing not just the good stuff as a miracle, but also the

Francis Bacon:

bad stuff that gets you to the miracle.

Francis Bacon:

We have to start viewing not just the good stuff.

Francis Bacon:

No one is as capable of gratitude as the one who has emerged from the

Francis Bacon:

darkness of the kingdom of night.

Francis Bacon:

Harold Kushner, who wrote Bad Things Happen to Good People, says, "God

Francis Bacon:

is the light shining in the midst of darkness, but to deny that there is

Francis Bacon:

darkness in the world would be wrong.

Francis Bacon:

But we need to reassure ourselves that we do not have to be afraid

Francis Bacon:

of the darkness, because darkness will always yield to light."

Francis Bacon:

Can I get an amen?

Francis Bacon:

Though my soul may be set in darkness, it will rise in perfect light.

Francis Bacon:

I have loved the stars that fondly remind me of the light is coming

Francis Bacon:

Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness around us.

Francis Bacon:

Today, we're talking about come and see the miracles.

Francis Bacon:

Not many people believe in miracles anymore.

Francis Bacon:

We need to believe in miracles, right?

Francis Bacon:

We need to believe that God can do amazing things in our lives,

Francis Bacon:

and that he will do amazing things for each of us individually.

Francis Bacon:

When you start not believing that God will do supernatural, amazing,

Francis Bacon:

impossible, unbelievable, unseen things for you, you start to lose your faith.

Francis Bacon:

And so today, we're gonna talk about one, uh, very amazing

Francis Bacon:

miracle in John Chapter nine.

Francis Bacon:

The whole story's just about this, the whole chapter.

Francis Bacon:

And I wanna remind you of Raymond Brown's commentary if you wanna

Francis Bacon:

get that for your quiet times.

Francis Bacon:

Jesus said in John nine in verse five, "While I am in the world,

Francis Bacon:

I am the light of the world."

Francis Bacon:

And then in Matthew it says, "We're the light of the world."

Francis Bacon:

So Jesus is gone from the world, so where is light coming from now?

Francis Bacon:

Good people Coming from us.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light for your family.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light for your work.

Francis Bacon:

Be your light for your community.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light for your marriage.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light for your children.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light for the church.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light for the preacher this morning, all right?

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

Be the light.

Francis Bacon:

That's right.

Francis Bacon:

I'm the light.

Francis Bacon:

Okay?

Francis Bacon:

That may be our motto after this sermon.

Francis Bacon:

I'm the light.

Francis Bacon:

Can't you see it?

Francis Bacon:

You must be blind.

Francis Bacon:

We're gonna talk about, this is a great chapter, uh, light defeats darkness.

Francis Bacon:

Praise God for that.

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes I doubt.

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes I think the darkness is just overcoming us.

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes I get discouraged, especially when people I love leave the faith.

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

Breaks my heart, and I think the darkness is winning.

Francis Bacon:

But then I read my Bible and I'm reminded that, no, light defeats darkness.

Francis Bacon:

It always has to yield.

Francis Bacon:

There's a great poem I, I read about a candle in a closet.

Francis Bacon:

Who cares?

Francis Bacon:

I don't hang out in closets, do you?

Francis Bacon:

But it was so magnificent how it just described how all the

Francis Bacon:

darkness has to flee just out of the little cracks in the doors.

Francis Bacon:

It's gotta go, 'cause the candle brightens up the closet.

Francis Bacon:

Light defeats darkness.

Francis Bacon:

We're seeing a miracle today as we read in mar- in John chapter

Francis Bacon:

nine, a man born blind healed.

Francis Bacon:

And then we're gonna see that, uh, darkness hates light.

Francis Bacon:

How come things are so tough sometimes for us as Christians?

Francis Bacon:

Why do some people just oppose us?

Francis Bacon:

Why sometimes does it just seem hard to be good?

Francis Bacon:

I mean, why aren't people cheering me on to be good?

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

Yeah, I wanna be good.

Francis Bacon:

You wanna be good.

Francis Bacon:

We all wanna be good.

Francis Bacon:

Let's be good.

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

But you only get those cheers here at church, right?

Francis Bacon:

Out in the world, they applaud darkness.

Francis Bacon:

They put…

Francis Bacon:

The viral ones are the dark ones, right?

Francis Bacon:

We need to see and realize darkness hates light.

Francis Bacon:

And we're gonna start off with the Pharisees refuse to accept the

Francis Bacon:

miracle, and the blame question.

Francis Bacon:

And then lastly, we'll see a little bit about how light reveals truth.

Francis Bacon:

How this blind man, his first sight was so exciting for him.

Francis Bacon:

So wanna remind you the theme of the Book of John, don't ever lose context.

Francis Bacon:

All right?

Francis Bacon:

Don't get so myopic you look at the, the specific and don't

Francis Bacon:

keep in view the big picture.

Francis Bacon:

If you lose the big picture of life, you can get discouraged and down.

Francis Bacon:

So the big picture of the Book of John is believe.

Francis Bacon:

Believe.

Francis Bacon:

You gotta hold onto this stuff.

Francis Bacon:

You gotta have this stuff deep in your soul.

Francis Bacon:

You can't be casual about this.

Francis Bacon:

This is what your foundation of life is, that you believe there's light in

Francis Bacon:

the world, that there's good in the world, and that you wanna be good.

Francis Bacon:

And you believe that Jesus Christ was the good one- Amen … the light,

Francis Bacon:

the best one, the one and only.

Francis Bacon:

Amen?

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

Gotta be careful.

Francis Bacon:

I'm gonna lose my voice.

Francis Bacon:

Got a little cold, you know?

Francis Bacon:

Comes on this time, the weather changes.

Francis Bacon:

It's a personal problem.

Francis Bacon:

Don't worry about it.

Francis Bacon:

Maybe pray about it for me.

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

We've seen almost all the signs already in the Book of John.

Francis Bacon:

We've seen the sign of water to wine, the healing of the nobleman's son,

Francis Bacon:

the healing of the paralytic, and the feeding of the 5,000, and, and then

Francis Bacon:

Jesus and Peter walking on water.

Francis Bacon:

And today we get to see the sight re- s- the blind receiving sight.

Francis Bacon:

And then the last miracle is the resurrection from the dead.

Francis Bacon:

Praise God for that one.

Francis Bacon:

We would have no hope without that one.

Francis Bacon:

But Jesus today, we're gonna see He's a miracle worker.

Francis Bacon:

And I thought that Marcel was gonna steal my thunder.

Francis Bacon:

He's using my verse.

Francis Bacon:

I'm like, "Hush!"

Francis Bacon:

But he didn't.

Francis Bacon:

He just mentioned it.

Francis Bacon:

It's good to tie the communion into the sermon.

Francis Bacon:

Thank you so much for that, Marcel.

Francis Bacon:

Just being a little open there for a minute.

Francis Bacon:

All right?

Francis Bacon:

But you avoided it.

Francis Bacon:

You didn't steal my thunder.

Francis Bacon:

That's right.

Francis Bacon:

But there's two riddles in this p- in this chapter.

Francis Bacon:

A- And you know, for years as a young Christian, I just read by this stuff.

Francis Bacon:

If I didn't understand it, I just go to the stuff I did understand, and it

Francis Bacon:

built up my faith, and I didn't worry about the stuff I didn't understand.

Francis Bacon:

And then sometime along, somewhere along the l- line, somewhere I just

Francis Bacon:

decide, "I need to figure it all out."

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

And so in John Chapter 9, this verse, "As long as it is day, we

Francis Bacon:

must do the works of Him who sent me.

Francis Bacon:

Night is coming when no one can work."

Francis Bacon:

Now, we don't relate that much to this because we have lights.

Francis Bacon:

We have electricity.

Francis Bacon:

We can work at night.

Francis Bacon:

In fact, I'm more of a night owl than I am a early morning kinda guy.

Francis Bacon:

I've had to become more of a early morning kinda guy 'cause you guys like

Francis Bacon:

to have breakfast with me, all right?

Francis Bacon:

So I gotta get up.

Francis Bacon:

Gotta get up early, gotta get up real early, have my quiet time and meet you.

Francis Bacon:

But I'm a late night guy.

Francis Bacon:

I, I, I f- probably for about 20, 25 years, I stayed up till 2:00.

Francis Bacon:

I only needed about four or five hours of sleep most of my life.

Francis Bacon:

That probably wasn't…

Francis Bacon:

I'm probably not gonna live to 100, but I didn't really want to anyway because

Francis Bacon:

they're not, they don't, you don't get more attractive with time, all right?

Francis Bacon:

But what this means is you need to do good while you have the chance.

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

I prayed about this, I thought about this.

Francis Bacon:

I really believe I got enlightened.

Francis Bacon:

This means when it's day and you can work, and at night when you can

Francis Bacon:

sleep, you need to do what you're supposed to do at the right time.

Francis Bacon:

You need to do good when you have the chance to do good.

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

You need to make the right choices.

Francis Bacon:

Those of us that are older, we look back at our lives and we see

Francis Bacon:

where we made the right choices and where we made the wrong choices.

Francis Bacon:

And sometimes we get on our soapbox and we preach to you that

Francis Bacon:

are younger, "Don't do that!"

Francis Bacon:

You know?

Francis Bacon:

And you go, "You did."

Francis Bacon:

Yeah, and I regret it.

Francis Bacon:

And it was stupid, and it's gonna lead you down the dark path, not the light path

Francis Bacon:

I don't remember the movie, whether you should eat the red pill or the blue pill.

Francis Bacon:

Matrix.

Francis Bacon:

Matrix.

Francis Bacon:

I know it's Matrix, but I don't know which one's the right one.

Francis Bacon:

Right?

Francis Bacon:

I just know darkness and light.

Francis Bacon:

Do good while you have the chance.

Francis Bacon:

Darkness is dangerous, my mama said.

Francis Bacon:

And don't be messing with my mama.

Francis Bacon:

She's still alive, sweet little thing.

Francis Bacon:

I'll, I'll sick one of my older brothers on her, on you, if you mess with my mama.

Francis Bacon:

I am a preacher, I can't mess with you.

Francis Bacon:

All right?

Francis Bacon:

But Mama said nothing good happens after midnight.

Francis Bacon:

Wow.

Francis Bacon:

You get home.

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

You need to get home by midnight.

Francis Bacon:

Nothing good happens after midnight.

Francis Bacon:

And then when a sweet little person says something real strong, you're

Francis Bacon:

like, "Wow, where'd that come from?"

Francis Bacon:

And obviously I've remembered it all these years, but that's what Jesus is saying.

Francis Bacon:

Nothing good comes after midnight

Francis Bacon:

What have we seen so far in the Gospel of John?

Francis Bacon:

Let's keep our context.

Francis Bacon:

John chapter five, he healed the man at the pool of Siloam, the paralytic, and

Francis Bacon:

he asked him, "Do you wanna get well?"

Francis Bacon:

You know, in counseling they teach you don't, don't go somewhere

Francis Bacon:

your clients don't wanna go.

Francis Bacon:

If they don't want help, stop taking their money.

Francis Bacon:

Tell them to, to come back l- later.

Francis Bacon:

Only help those that wanna be helped.

Francis Bacon:

That's right.

Francis Bacon:

You can't help people that don't wanna change.

Francis Bacon:

You cannot help people that don't wanna be helped.

Francis Bacon:

That's right.

Francis Bacon:

And some of us parents need to realize that.

Francis Bacon:

That's right.

Francis Bacon:

We have wanted to help our kids, and they haven't wanted our help.

Francis Bacon:

L- what does Jesus say?

Francis Bacon:

Let them live.

Francis Bacon:

Let them learn the hard way on some things.

Francis Bacon:

That's right.

Francis Bacon:

And the world will teach you, and will teach you the hard way.

Francis Bacon:

So Jesus asked this question, "Do you wanna get well?"

Francis Bacon:

And when you wanna get well, nothing can stop you.

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

Nothing can stop you.

Francis Bacon:

And He healed him.

Francis Bacon:

And then the feeding of fi- the 5,000 from two loaves and, or, or five loaves and

Francis Bacon:

two fishes, just that everybody's hungry.

Francis Bacon:

And the question is, do you guys wanna leave too, or do you want to

Francis Bacon:

consume my body and drink my blood?

Francis Bacon:

We just did in communion.

Francis Bacon:

The symbol of Jesus' body and blood, we just consumed it.

Francis Bacon:

And He says, basically, in that whole chapter it's about

Francis Bacon:

are you gonna be committed?

Francis Bacon:

Are you gonna be consumed with Me and consume Me, and be consumed with my

Francis Bacon:

mission, or do you just wanna be pagan?

Francis Bacon:

That's what He's saying in John chapter 6.

Francis Bacon:

In John chapter 7, Jesus' brothers are goading Him.

Francis Bacon:

He says, "Hey, you need to go up and, and, and, and go to the fe- festival, and you

Francis Bacon:

need to get, get famous, be an influencer.

Francis Bacon:

You need to go viral."

Francis Bacon:

And Jesus says, "My time hasn't come yet."

Francis Bacon:

And then it's so interesting, then He goes, but in secret.

Francis Bacon:

That secret motif-

Francis Bacon:

His brothers are hopeless, and he's given hope to the world.

Francis Bacon:

The adulterous woman, I loved Kyle's sermon last week.

Francis Bacon:

I loved that passage.

Francis Bacon:

She was heartbroken.

Francis Bacon:

She was looking for love, and she found it in Jesus Christ.

Francis Bacon:

And today, we see a fellow blind.

Francis Bacon:

And, you know, blind people need a little help

Francis Bacon:

And he j- they, they can, they can do amazing things now.

Francis Bacon:

They can speak into their, their computer, and it can type it out, and they can hear.

Francis Bacon:

They can use their other senses, and they can hear your emails,

Francis Bacon:

and there's so many programs.

Francis Bacon:

There's so many good things.

Francis Bacon:

I ha- one of my mentors at Abilene Christian, Charles Seibert,

Francis Bacon:

he's died now of cancer, but he had m- macular de-generation.

Francis Bacon:

He couldn't drive.

Francis Bacon:

He couldn't type.

Francis Bacon:

He couldn't, couldn't hardly see.

Francis Bacon:

He needed help, and so we as students would, would help him.

Francis Bacon:

We'd take him home.

Francis Bacon:

We'd guide him to class.

Francis Bacon:

We'd, we'd tell him…

Francis Bacon:

We'd read him the things that would come in the mail.

Francis Bacon:

And Je- and Jesus heals this man that needs help.

Francis Bacon:

And I don't know about you, but help, I need somebody.

Francis Bacon:

Help, not just anybody.

Francis Bacon:

Help, I need someone.

Francis Bacon:

See, can you tell I grew up in the '60s?

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

Oh, I love the Beatles.

Francis Bacon:

If you don't love the Beatles- … I mean, something's wrong

Francis Bacon:

We're talking about a full life versus an empty life.

Francis Bacon:

Let's read together beginning in John 9:1.

Francis Bacon:

"As He went along, He saw a man blind from birth."

Francis Bacon:

Blind from birth.

Francis Bacon:

Blind from birth

Francis Bacon:

At least I got a C for 30 years, clearly

Francis Bacon:

It hurts kids that are born with illness.

Francis Bacon:

As a chaplain in the NICU, in the pediatric ICU, I've seen a lot of this.

Francis Bacon:

His disciples ask him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his

Francis Bacon:

parents, that he was born blind?"

Francis Bacon:

Parents will beat themselves up, blaming themselves for everything

Francis Bacon:

wrong with their kids' lives.

Francis Bacon:

Don't we, parents?

Francis Bacon:

We take responsibility.

Francis Bacon:

We love our kids.

Francis Bacon:

We love you, children, and we'll beat ourselves up, and we'll feel

Francis Bacon:

like we're the ones to blame.

Francis Bacon:

And you need to hear this, Mom and Dad.

Francis Bacon:

You're not to blame

Francis Bacon:

"Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened that the

Francis Bacon:

works of God might be displayed in him."

Francis Bacon:

He doesn't even answer the question of whose fault it is.

Francis Bacon:

I think it's Satan's fault.

Francis Bacon:

I've studied my Bible enough that good comes from God and evil comes from Satan.

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

Blessings come from God, and illness and sickness and death comes from Satan.

Francis Bacon:

But he says, "But God will work in the blindness."

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

God will work

Francis Bacon:

And he'll make bad good and tragedy triumph

Francis Bacon:

But this happened that the works of God might be displayed in him.

Francis Bacon:

As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent us.

Francis Bacon:

Don't play the blame game.

Francis Bacon:

This man, the child, the child is not to blame.

Francis Bacon:

And, and kids are born with stuff, prone to alcoholism, prone to drug addiction,

Francis Bacon:

prone to things, prone to mental illness.

Francis Bacon:

Nobody to blame.

Francis Bacon:

Oh, I'd like to hit something sometimes, you know?

Francis Bacon:

Over evil, over bad.

Francis Bacon:

I hit my pillow.

Francis Bacon:

I gotta buy new pillows every once in a while.

Francis Bacon:

My therapist told me to hit my pillow, scream in my pillow.

Francis Bacon:

It's good for you, especially men, that primal scream

Francis Bacon:

I'm amplified, so I can't do it.

Francis Bacon:

All right?

Francis Bacon:

I've already been loud enough already.

Francis Bacon:

As long as it is day, we must do good.

Francis Bacon:

Bad things happen and there's no one to blame.

Francis Bacon:

There's the unexplainable, the unknowable, but God cares.

Francis Bacon:

Don't do the blame game, Mom, Dad, brother, sister, children.

Francis Bacon:

Verse 10, he says, "How then were your eyes opened?"

Francis Bacon:

they ask.

Francis Bacon:

He replied, "The man they call Jesus…"

Francis Bacon:

He- Jesus has already healed him.

Francis Bacon:

We've skipped that part of the story.

Francis Bacon:

You know that part.

Francis Bacon:

"The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes.

Francis Bacon:

He told me to go to Siloam and wash.

Francis Bacon:

So I went and washed, and then I could see."

Francis Bacon:

"Where is this man?"

Francis Bacon:

they ask him.

Francis Bacon:

Oh, I don't know.

Francis Bacon:

"Who is this man?"

Francis Bacon:

I don't know.

Francis Bacon:

I was blind when I was talking to him.

Francis Bacon:

All right?

Francis Bacon:

They brought to Jesus the man who had been born blind.

Francis Bacon:

Now, the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened

Francis Bacon:

the man's eye was a Sabbath.

Francis Bacon:

Light is for sight.

Francis Bacon:

Truth is seen though only by faith.

Francis Bacon:

Light can help you see and see the beautiful and see the colors and

Francis Bacon:

see the magnificence, see the glory.

Francis Bacon:

But light can also blind you

Francis Bacon:

Watch me closely sometimes when I walk out of the building.

Francis Bacon:

I'll either put sunglasses on or I'll close this eye that doesn't work

Francis Bacon:

'cause it's really sensitive to light

Francis Bacon:

And the light blinds me in this eye

Francis Bacon:

Lot goes on with people.

Francis Bacon:

Lots goes on with me you don't know about.

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes I share with you.

Francis Bacon:

We gotta be sensitive to people.

Francis Bacon:

You know who's not sensitive to me?

Francis Bacon:

McDonald's workers.

Francis Bacon:

Oh, yeah.

Francis Bacon:

Oh, yeah.

Francis Bacon:

As I'll get up there to the counter, and I'll look up and to the menu,

Francis Bacon:

and it's just the wrong distance for my eyesight, and I can't read it.

Francis Bacon:

And they ask you, "What do you want?

Francis Bacon:

What do you want?"

Francis Bacon:

"People behind you, sir.

Francis Bacon:

What would you like?"

Francis Bacon:

"Oh, just get me a Big Mac."

Francis Bacon:

And I shouldn't get a Big Mac.

Francis Bacon:

I'm looking for salad.

Francis Bacon:

I'm looking for something healthy, but I can't see it

Francis Bacon:

I love those restaurants that have the little paper menus so I

Francis Bacon:

can see them and I can read them.

Francis Bacon:

Light is for sight.

Francis Bacon:

Truth is seen, though, through the eyes of faith.

Francis Bacon:

Jesus was called the light.

Francis Bacon:

He was called by this man the prophet, by this man a healer.

Francis Bacon:

Miracles happen when we believe.

Francis Bacon:

Verse 15, skipping ahead a little further, "There the- therefore the Pharisees also

Francis Bacon:

asked him how he had received his sight.

Francis Bacon:

'He put mud on my eyes.'"

Francis Bacon:

Now, if you were not desperate to be able to see, would you let

Francis Bacon:

someone put mud on your eyes?

Francis Bacon:

You know what they do in eye surgery?

Francis Bacon:

You don't wanna know.

Francis Bacon:

They don't tell you before you go into surgery.

Francis Bacon:

Because if they told you, you're like, "For four hours you're gonna

Francis Bacon:

prop my eye open with metal and shine a bright light in there and cut on

Francis Bacon:

it, and you have to be so precise?"

Francis Bacon:

You're like, "There's no way."

Francis Bacon:

I woke up at the end of one of the surgeries, and that light was so blinding.

Francis Bacon:

I started screaming and crying, "Shut it off.

Francis Bacon:

Shut it off."

Francis Bacon:

"We can't, sir.

Francis Bacon:

We're almost done."

Francis Bacon:

"Shut it off."

Francis Bacon:

And I can get real loud if you haven't noticed

Francis Bacon:

We needed a little bit better anes- anesthesiologist that day

Francis Bacon:

Put mud in my eyes, and I wash, and now I see."

Francis Bacon:

Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for

Francis Bacon:

he does not keep the Sabbath."

Francis Bacon:

But others asked, "How can a sinner perform such signs?"

Francis Bacon:

So they were divided.

Francis Bacon:

Then they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say about him?

Francis Bacon:

It was your eyes that were opened."

Francis Bacon:

And the man replied, "He is a prophet."

Francis Bacon:

He's a prophet.

Francis Bacon:

You only see what you wanna see, and sometimes you see only what you wanna see.

Francis Bacon:

It's called confirmation bias.

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes we even come to church that way.

Francis Bacon:

We only hear what we wanna hear, and we don't hear what is said.

Francis Bacon:

We've gotta let God speak to us.

Francis Bacon:

Jesus was either liar, Lord, or lunatic.

Francis Bacon:

There's a great book out with that title

Francis Bacon:

Hearing for the man was healing.

Francis Bacon:

Before he could ever see, he obeyed Jesus.

Francis Bacon:

Hearing brought his healing, 'cause he went and washed and obeyed.

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes the only way to see is to close your eyes

Francis Bacon:

If I close my eyes, I can focus.

Francis Bacon:

If I keep my eyes open, my head's all over the place.

Francis Bacon:

My mind is always running.

Francis Bacon:

So I gotta go somewhere quiet, and I have to close my eyes,

Francis Bacon:

and then I start seeing more.

Francis Bacon:

I keep i- I start imagining, I start dreaming

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes that's the only way to see, is to close your eyes.

Francis Bacon:

And God will show us the unbelievable.

Francis Bacon:

The, he w- 'cause he wants our lives to be overflowing.

Francis Bacon:

Verse 18, "They still did not believe."

Francis Bacon:

Oh, those religious people

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes we as preachers, we assume you believe.

Francis Bacon:

We don't have to persuade, we don't have to convince, we don't

Francis Bacon:

have to inspire, 'cause you came.

Francis Bacon:

That doesn't mean you believe.

Francis Bacon:

Right.

Francis Bacon:

'Cause these religious people did not believe, 'cause they

Francis Bacon:

already had confirmation bias.

Francis Bacon:

They still did not believe that he, this man had been blind and

Francis Bacon:

had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents.

Francis Bacon:

"Is this your son?"

Francis Bacon:

they asked.

Francis Bacon:

"Is this the one that you say was born blind?

Francis Bacon:

How is it that he can see?"

Francis Bacon:

"We know it's our son," the parents answered, "and we know that he was

Francis Bacon:

born blind, but now he can see.

Francis Bacon:

Now…

Francis Bacon:

Or who, who opened his eyes, we don't know.

Francis Bacon:

Ask him.

Francis Bacon:

He's of age, and he will speak for himself."

Francis Bacon:

This is a heartbreaking moment.

Francis Bacon:

Mom and Dad, stand up for your son.

Francis Bacon:

Stand up for him.

Francis Bacon:

Stand with him.

Francis Bacon:

He was blind all these years, and people have made you feel

Francis Bacon:

guilty and made him feel guilty.

Francis Bacon:

That you were bad parents, you're sinful parents, and that's why he was born blind.

Francis Bacon:

And they've made him feel like a sinner.

Francis Bacon:

So this is your moment.

Francis Bacon:

As a family, stand with your son and say, "He was blind and now he can see.

Francis Bacon:

He was healed by God."

Francis Bacon:

And they missed their moment.

Francis Bacon:

And you don't get these moments.

Francis Bacon:

They don't come again.

Francis Bacon:

There's a time to do what's right.

Francis Bacon:

There's a time when it's light, when you need to do good,

Francis Bacon:

and then the darkness comes

Francis Bacon:

Parents missed their moments.

Francis Bacon:

They blew it big time here.

Francis Bacon:

Ah.

Francis Bacon:

And we as such enlightened people think, "Oh, I would've stood up for my son."

Francis Bacon:

Yeah.

Francis Bacon:

Careful, careful, careful.

Francis Bacon:

We see what we wanna see.

Francis Bacon:

Our eyes at times deceive us.

Francis Bacon:

We need to see through the eyes of faith

Francis Bacon:

You know what I've accepted in my life?

Francis Bacon:

It's better for this eye to be blind

Francis Bacon:

It makes me humble

Francis Bacon:

I drive a little slower 'cause I have a restricted license.

Francis Bacon:

I gotta have a mirror on this side.

Francis Bacon:

And I don't go that, to that lane very quickly.

Francis Bacon:

I turn on my blinker, I slow down, I start edging over just

Francis Bacon:

in case I'm missing somebody.

Francis Bacon:

I'm always adjusting that mirror too.

Francis Bacon:

Can I see everybody?

Francis Bacon:

And every once in a while I'll miss somebody, and I'll almost run

Francis Bacon:

them off the road, and they honk and they give me a Hollywood hello

Francis Bacon:

And I just say, "Sorry I'm sorry."

Francis Bacon:

Sometimes it's better to be blind.

Francis Bacon:

Makes you accept help

Francis Bacon:

Jesus says at the end of this chapter in John 9:41, "If you were blind,

Francis Bacon:

you would not be guilty of sin.

Francis Bacon:

But now that you claim you can see, your guilt remains."

Francis Bacon:

You Christians you need a crutch

Francis Bacon:

You Christians, you just believe stuff by faith.

Francis Bacon:

You're so naive.

Francis Bacon:

You're so gullible

Francis Bacon:

No, we believe because of Jesus.

Francis Bacon:

It's not blind belief.

Francis Bacon:

But a lot of stuff we just accept, we don't see

Francis Bacon:

Oh, we have these incredible telescopes.

Francis Bacon:

But we can't see out there very far.

Francis Bacon:

We can't see hardly any of the universe, though we think we're so amazing.

Francis Bacon:

You know?

Francis Bacon:

The darkness brings blinders to us, doesn't it?

Francis Bacon:

Verse 30

Francis Bacon:

The man answered, "Now that's remarkable."

Francis Bacon:

This is the Pharisees investigating him some more.

Francis Bacon:

They've brought him back, and they've asked him what happened,

Francis Bacon:

and he says, "It's remarkable.

Francis Bacon:

You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes?

Francis Bacon:

We know that God doesn't listen to sinners."

Francis Bacon:

This guy has gotten so profound and spiritual all of a sudden.

Francis Bacon:

Why?

Francis Bacon:

'Cause he's been listening.

Francis Bacon:

"He listens to the godly person who does his will."

Francis Bacon:

This is one thing this blind man has learned from his blindness.

Francis Bacon:

God listens to those who do his will.

Francis Bacon:

"Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind.

Francis Bacon:

If this man were not from God, he could do nothing."

Francis Bacon:

So they replied, "You are steeped in sin from birth.

Francis Bacon:

How dare you lecture us?"

Francis Bacon:

They threw him out.

Francis Bacon:

And then Jesus gets to put a face to the name, and Jesus makes a judgment.

Francis Bacon:

We all have blind spots.

Francis Bacon:

You've seen this diagram in some, you know, uh, driver training class.

Francis Bacon:

Maybe one that you took to get your license.

Francis Bacon:

Maybe one you took to get out of a ticket.

Francis Bacon:

Just saying.

Francis Bacon:

I learn a lot from these classes

Francis Bacon:

. In fact, I sort of like taking them 'cause I need the refresher, you know?

Francis Bacon:

And I love this diagram about all my blind spots back there,

Francis Bacon:

maybe because I can't see as well.

Francis Bacon:

This man didn't have any more blind spots about Jesus.

Francis Bacon:

He says, "He's a prophet.

Francis Bacon:

He healed me.

Francis Bacon:

Whether he's a sinner or not, I don't know."

Francis Bacon:

Verse 31, "We know that God listens to sinners."

Francis Bacon:

And then verse 38, he says, "I believe."

Francis Bacon:

That's the point of John, "I believe," and he worshiped him.

Francis Bacon:

And so the question for us today is simply this: Can we see?

Francis Bacon:

Can we see through the eyes of faith?

Francis Bacon:

Can we see what God wants us to see, or are we still blind?

Francis Bacon:

Jesus said, "For judgment I come into the world."

Francis Bacon:

So I gotta end on sort of a, a strong, a serious note.

Francis Bacon:

I like ending my sermons making you feel good, and you're

Francis Bacon:

cheering, and oh, that was good.

Francis Bacon:

Thank you, Greg.

Francis Bacon:

And almost every sermon that's short, you feel that way

Francis Bacon:

So let's wrap this up.

Francis Bacon:

Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this, "The blind will see,

Francis Bacon:

and those who see will become blind."

Francis Bacon:

And he says, "What?"

Francis Bacon:

They say, "What?

Francis Bacon:

Are we blind too?"

Francis Bacon:

And Jesus said, "If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin.

Francis Bacon:

But now that you claim that you can see, your guilt remains."

Francis Bacon:

This is the other riddle right there.

Francis Bacon:

If you were blind, you would not be guilty of sin.

Francis Bacon:

But now that you claim to see, what are they seeing?

Francis Bacon:

What are they admitting to?

Francis Bacon:

They can see in darkness because he's the light of the world.

Francis Bacon:

If they've been able to see, then that means they can see in darkness.

Francis Bacon:

But if they would have acknowledged they could not see, and they need to be

Francis Bacon:

able to see, and they need Jesus to see, then they would not be guilty of sin.

Francis Bacon:

But now that you claim you can see in the darkness, your guilt remains.

Francis Bacon:

So Jesus is the light of the world.

Francis Bacon:

Follow his voice, 'cause hearing is healing.

Francis Bacon:

Jesus is the light of the world, and sometimes just close your eyes, 'cause

Francis Bacon:

it's better-- you're better off blind.

Francis Bacon:

Your eyes can deceive you, 'cause we need to look beyond ourselves for truth.

Francis Bacon:

The world tells you over and over, and it's telling all you college

Francis Bacon:

students right now in college.

Francis Bacon:

I know what those professors said.

Francis Bacon:

I've had a lot of them, all right?

Francis Bacon:

They're telling you the answer's within you.

Francis Bacon:

You got all the answers.

Francis Bacon:

You got all the answers.

Francis Bacon:

And I think you're amazing.

Francis Bacon:

I'm not trying to put you down, but I know you don't have all the answers.

Francis Bacon:

I don't know-- I know you don't have that many answers, 'cause

Francis Bacon:

I'm your professor, all right?

Francis Bacon:

If you'll take my class, all right?

Francis Bacon:

We all need to go to God for our answers.

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

Amen.

Francis Bacon:

And then lastly, see the unseen.

Francis Bacon:

That's the good stuff.

Francis Bacon:

That's the good stuff.

Francis Bacon:

God will show us the unbelievable, the unexplainable, the

Francis Bacon:

unknowable, the unseeable.

Francis Bacon:

Why?

Francis Bacon:

Because Jesus is the light.

Francis Bacon:

And oh, oh, how we love and need light.

Francis Bacon:

God bless you, Church.
