Tanya Suba-Tang: You've been doing this for quite some time.

Tanya Suba-Tang: what challenges do students face

Tanya Suba-Tang: as they transition from academia

Tanya Suba-Tang: and then getting into the

Tanya Suba-Tang: workforce?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Yeah, that's a great question.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: and I think I would probably

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: break that into two pieces, one

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: piece being kind of the economic

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: landscape for students as they

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: come out of college, especially

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: today, with, kind of how jobs

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: are looking, how careers are

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: shaping up.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: But then the other piece, I

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: think is kind of the skill sets

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: that students have and, you

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: know, maybe in some cases the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: gap there that they need to to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: learn about.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So that first piece, the econ part, your listeners probably

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: know if they're listening to a CFA podcast, they're probably

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: familiar with the economy and how the jobs number is and

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: interest rates look.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: But, we all kind of keep a

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: little bit of tabs on on how

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: that goes.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So today's economy for for

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: students coming out into the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: workforce, especially in a

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: finance career or a technically

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: focused career, it's hard it's

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: tough to, you know, kind of

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: break in.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So you see, you know, job

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: postings online on any of those

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: platforms.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And if it's got a button where

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: you can apply online, there's

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: probably a thousand applicants

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: in the few minutes that it's

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: been posted.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so that's tough to compete with.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: so students are dealing with that.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And historically, I don't think there was that same, level of

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: competition, but there's always been some competition.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So, just the fact that there is, you know, competition for new

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: jobs is not new, but the way that it is, kind of in the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: economic landscape is new.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So the other piece I think that students have to deal with is,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: kind of the skill set of, you know, you've done a few things

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: in college, maybe you had four years, maybe five in some cases,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: as you're going through, through and learning some things, but

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: you haven't maybe putting put that your education into a real

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: world experience yet.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so I think if students have

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: an opportunity to get real world

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: experience, whether that's, you

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: know, something like the the IRC

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: competition that the CFA society

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: puts on the investment research

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: competition or, or any other way

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: that students can get some real

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: world experience to add on their

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: resume.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: I think that's a great way that students get going.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: But, the big challenge there is

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: going to be where if your resume

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: says four point oh finance

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: degree, that's excellent, but

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: you need something else on

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: there, right?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Maybe an internship or maybe something else.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So, those are I think what the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: students are seeing is a big

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: challenge.

Tanya Suba-Tang: So as I mentioned earlier, you

Tanya Suba-Tang: had moderated this fantastic

Tanya Suba-Tang: panel at our student career fair

Tanya Suba-Tang: and, you know, our panelists for

Tanya Suba-Tang: that.

Tanya Suba-Tang: They were very diverse group.

Tanya Suba-Tang: They were very, very diverse in

Tanya Suba-Tang: their career, their professional

Tanya Suba-Tang: journey, their personal

Tanya Suba-Tang: backgrounds.

Tanya Suba-Tang: What were the key skills and

Tanya Suba-Tang: resources that they share that

Tanya Suba-Tang: you believe will be valuable for

Tanya Suba-Tang: students or even individuals

Tanya Suba-Tang: looking to get into finance and

Tanya Suba-Tang: investment industry, like a

Tanya Suba-Tang: career transition?

Tanya Suba-Tang: You know, and even those in their early careers.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Yeah. And so I'm going to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: counter myself a little bit here

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: by saying, one of the things

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: that we heard on this panel was,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: that it's not just the technical

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: skills.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So I just said that students see

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: a challenge of coming out of the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: out of college into a workforce,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: and they need some real world

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: experience, but they also need

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: to be likable and to be

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: personable.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Right.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so there's maybe this

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: stereotype around finance that

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: everybody is a spreadsheet

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: person, and we just want to look

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: at numbers all day and, and, and

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: do percentages in our head and

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: whatever else.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: But there's also a piece to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: finance as an industry that is a

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: person to person kind of thing,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: right?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Whether it's a sales component or whether it's an advisory

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: component or some other thing.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: It's a lot of person to person contact.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so students coming into the workforce, if you're applying

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: for a job, the person on the other side of the table is

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: thinking, do I want to spend eight hours a day, every day

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: with this person?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: I don't know, right?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And if you have a little bit of a good personality and you're

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: kind of fun to be around, then that is a point in your favor.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And sometimes it's a little bit

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: of the, I guess maybe the table

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: stakes is that you got to be

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: able to have a little bit of

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: number sense, but it's also, you

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: know, can you, can you get the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: job done?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And am I, am I going to be interested in working with you?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So one of the great things that

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: I think we took away from this

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: panel, and we had a great slate

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: of speakers there, and it was

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: super interesting to to hear

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: from them, but I think it was

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: really interesting to hear, that

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: the kind of personable piece of

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: finance is what, they, they

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: recommended is, is something to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: consider as you're going into

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: this industry.

Tanya Suba-Tang: And, you know, they shared so many great insights and so many

Tanya Suba-Tang: great, feedback, you know, sharing their own journeys, like

Tanya Suba-Tang: I mentioned earlier.

Tanya Suba-Tang: But what were some things that

Tanya Suba-Tang: they responded to that really

Tanya Suba-Tang: surprised you, you know, and

Tanya Suba-Tang: that maybe you didn't expect

Tanya Suba-Tang: coming from such a diverse and

Tanya Suba-Tang: young panel?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Yeah. So, I think all of it was surprising.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So it was really great.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: It was really great to hear a

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: different perspective because,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: you know, I talk to my students

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: about, you know, what I think

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: they should be working on and

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: what I think they should be

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: focused on.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: But I'm just one person.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so being able to hear it

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: from someone else and, and just

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: give the audience a little bit

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: of some, some background, these

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: were professionals who were

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: working in kind of higher

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: finance type roles in tech

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: companies and pension funds and

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: kind of back broad background

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: and lots of different,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: experiences.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so it was really cool to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: hear and kind of surprising to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: hear that that kind of

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: personable piece on there, I

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: thought that was that was

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: surprising.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: but also that, it's not just your technical skills or your

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: personal skills or it's kind of the combination of you as a

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: whole package and being able to do, do this work and kind of who

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: you are as a person.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And you think of finance careers

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: as being this, I don't know,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: brick wall of it's all robots or

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: whatever.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: It's, it's I'm going to harp

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: back on the stereotyping thing

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: again.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: But, it is a personality and a personable industry as well.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: one of the things that one of the other things, I guess that

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: was surprising to me was that, one of the panelists said that,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: you know, you can use AI a little bit, but you can't rely

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: on it entirely.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So and this is coming from somebody who works for.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Maybe I won't name a company, but somebody who works for a

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: company that has.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: A well-known AI platform.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so and so if you and I see

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: this in my students all the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: time, too.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: If you're relying on one of these language models to write

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: your cover letter and to write your resume for you, and then

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: hope that that's going to get you through, that's not it's not

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: going to get you a job, because you have to also be able to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: write eloquently, at least, or at least coherently at minimum.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so you got to be able to do it.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Do it yourself too.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And and even when you're in the, in the workforce, you're going

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: to be able to answer emails and talk to your boss.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so you can't rely on AI to answer every question for you.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So having a little bit of of

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: using AI as a tool and being

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: able to, you know, maybe fine

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: tune something using using that

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: kind of digital feedback I think

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: is great.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And that's a tool that I use in

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: the classroom a lot too, is, you

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: know, one of the things I do in

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: my, in my classes is that

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: students have to present their

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: work.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: They can't just turn in a paper

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: and, you know, have had

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: something else.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Write that paper for them.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So at the end of the either the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: semester or the project,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: whatever it is, I have them

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: present.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So that way I can at least make sure they know the material.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: It's not just some some robot telling me the answer for them.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So, those I think were some of

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: the biggest surprises is that,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: you know, the industry isn't

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: entirely, robotic.

Tanya Suba-Tang: Mhm.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Yeah.

Tanya Suba-Tang: Yeah. I kind of share the same

Tanya Suba-Tang: thought as you that, that, that

Tanya Suba-Tang: whole feedback on AI as well

Tanya Suba-Tang: because, you know, everyone's

Tanya Suba-Tang: like oh they're going to take

Tanya Suba-Tang: our jobs.

Tanya Suba-Tang: But no, there's still a human component that that needs to be

Tanya Suba-Tang: part of it.

Tanya Suba-Tang: So and kind of just wrapping

Tanya Suba-Tang: things up here, for those in the

Tanya Suba-Tang: investment and finance industry

Tanya Suba-Tang: who maybe are more senior in the

Tanya Suba-Tang: level or mid-career who are

Tanya Suba-Tang: established, who want to come

Tanya Suba-Tang: and support our incoming

Tanya Suba-Tang: workforce, what advice or

Tanya Suba-Tang: takeaways could you share with

Tanya Suba-Tang: them?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Yeah, that's a great question and something that I think about

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: a lot, in my role.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: So, just to give a little bit of background is, in in my space,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: I, I work to help build up our finance program at the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: university, to bring students to more career opportunities and to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: bring professionals onto campus.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so, one of the things that maybe is obvious to a financial

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: professional, but maybe not is, is the informational interviews

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: and the coffee chats and those kinds of things that you'll get

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: requests from students.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And I'm sure a lot of your listeners are used to those

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: kinds of requests, right?

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: They get them on LinkedIn or email or whatever.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so answering those,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: certainly, that's absolutely a

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: first step in being supportive

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: to students.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: But I think another step that maybe is overlooked is that you

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: can come back to campus, too, and you can be a guest speaker

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: or a judge in a competition.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: maybe what's less publicly known is that a lot of, universities,

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: especially throughout California, where we are, a lot

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: last comment about, AI taking

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: jobs.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: Right.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And kind of a fear of that and that there may be some, some

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: worry about that.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And I think that's, you know, what will happen is technology

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: will make people more efficient.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so we may not need as many people in some areas, but we're

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: still going to need people in some area somewhere.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so we need to have this

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: incoming pipeline in the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: industry.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: You know, if you have no new entrants, then everybody is just

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: going to get older and leave, and then there's no one left.

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: And so, being able to come back to the university and talk to

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: students and, and help to kind of onboard new, new talent into

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: the pipeline, I think is an excellent way to, to keep the

Jaycob Arbogast CFP, MBA: industry going and growing.
