Today Elijah goes on retreat! “The word of the Lord came to him, ‘Go away from here, go eastwards, and hide yourself in the wadi Cherith which lies east of Jordan. You can drink from the stream, and I have ordered the ravens to bring you food there.’” This is really important for us Christians. God asks us to take time of retreat. Elijah had a new mission and a tough time ahead of him: so at times do we. Retreat alone with him is God’s idea of giving us rest, renewing us in our love for him and others, and changing us quickly. And it works. As we hear in the reading: “The ravens brought him bread in the morning and meat in the evening, and he quenched his thirst at the stream.” He had nothing to worry about in that time. Neither will we. Let us take time to plan a few days, or just a day of retreat for ourselves later in the year - so we come back to our mission and loved ones renewed and changed.
