The primary theme of today's episode revolves around the profound notion that spiritual growth is an ongoing journey rather than a final destination. We engage with a reading from 1 Peter 2:1-3, which emphasizes the necessity of nurturing one's spiritual life by letting go of harmful tendencies and cultivating a deeper craving for goodness. In our discourse, we elucidate the idea that true salvation is a process of maturation, inviting listeners to embrace a mindset of continual development akin to the gradual growth of a majestic tree. As we ponder the implications of our cravings, we recognize that what we consume—whether in thoughts or interactions—significantly influences our character and spiritual progression. We conclude with actionable steps for our audience to audit their spiritual appetites, fostering awareness as the catalyst for genuine growth.

Speaker A:Here's today's reading.
Speaker B:Reading today from 1 Peter 2:1:3 from the Message so clean house.
Speaker B:Make a clean sweep of malice and pretense, envy and hurtful talk.
Speaker B:You've had a taste of God now, like infants at the breast, drink deep of God's pure kindness.
Speaker B:Then you'll grow up mature and whole in God.
Speaker B:Well, a really kind of a short and sweet and layered and powerful passage of Scripture for our reading for the day.
Speaker A:So let's unpack it.
Speaker B:Let's get into a couple points to ponder.
Speaker B:First point to ponder is growth is the goal, not the arrival.
Speaker B:Notice what Peter doesn't say.
Speaker B:He doesn't say, now that you're saved, you're done, pick up your certificate at.
Speaker A:The door and be on your way.
Speaker B:No, he says, grow in your salvation.
Speaker B:Salvation here is a journey, a becoming and not a transaction that gets stamped and filed away.
Speaker B:And I love that because it kind of reframes the whole spiritual life.
Speaker B:We're not trying to earn a gold star from God.
Speaker B:We're being invited to grow slowly, gently, like a child.
Speaker B:Now my wife and I, among the many things we like to do is hike at wooded parks.
Speaker B:Especially when we go traveling.
Speaker B:We travel out west quite a bit.
Speaker B:And one thing you notice in like an old forest area is that you can't rush it.
Speaker B:You just can't rush the growth of a 200 year old tree.
Speaker B:Trees don't get tall overnight.
Speaker B:They start as seedlings and saplings and grow from there.
Speaker B:They grow through the seasons, weather, harsh, beautiful, everything in between.
Speaker B:Your spiritual life is allowed to grow and to look like that as well.
Speaker B:A progressive reading of this passage invites us to let go of the idea that faith is about having all the right answers all the time.
Speaker B:Instead, it's about staying hungry, staying curious, and staying open to keep on growing.
Speaker B:Point to ponder Number two what we crave shapes who we become.
Speaker B:Peter lists some pretty ugly stuff in his teaching.
Speaker B:Malice, deceit, hypocrisy, slander.
Speaker B:And if we're honest, we don't usually plan to become those things.
Speaker B:They sneak in through other ways in our life.
Speaker B:What we consume, what we scroll, who we listen to, what grievances we keep feeding.
Speaker B:And Peter's invitation is basically change your appetite.
Speaker B:Crave something better.
Speaker B:Crave goodness.
Speaker B:Crave the kind of love that shows up for your neighbor, whether they vote like you or not.
Speaker B:Crave a spirituality that makes you kinder, not more certain.
Speaker B:Kind of think about this.
Speaker B:And also in the framework of my weekly cancer related podcast, people facing hard situations, hard decisions, hard circumstances, and many times folks going through that crave hope and humor, presence.
Speaker B:Real things.
Speaker B:Not the latest hot take.
Speaker B:Not hypocrisy.
Speaker B:The good stuff.
Speaker B:And Peter says now that you have tasted that the Lord is good, think he's saying once you've had the real thing, junk food won't do anymore.
Speaker B:It just doesn't satisfy.
Speaker B:Here's your action step.
Speaker B:Do a 24 hour appetite audit.
Speaker B:Just notice what you're feeding your soul, whatever.
Speaker B:Podcast, social media, anything that goes in conversations, the thoughts that you rehearse on repeat and ask yourself a question.
Speaker B:Is what I'm consuming growing me or shrinking me?
Speaker B:You don't have to overhaul your whole life overnight, but just think about one thing.
Speaker B:You consume it.
Speaker B:Just notice it.
Speaker B:Awareness is where growth begins.
Speaker B:We'll come back and have a prayer here in just a minute, but I want you to know that we have a daily Bible study resource for you called the ABC 1, 2, 3 Bible study method.
Speaker A:Free to you when you go over.
Speaker B:To our website voiceofgoddaily.com let's pray.
Speaker B:Oh God, help me to crave what's truly good today.
Speaker B:Clear out what's making me small.
Speaker B:Grow me into something kinder, gentler and more alive.
