Speaker:

Welcome to Podcast Done for You,

Speaker:

the show where we make it as easy

Speaker:

as possible for you to make the

Speaker:

right choices to advance your

Speaker:

podcasting career.

Speaker:

So let's get started on the show

Speaker:

Podcast Graphics, why they are so

Speaker:

important, and why am I doing this?

Speaker:

I'll tell you why, because that is what

Speaker:

you need a little bit of when it

Speaker:

comes to your photos and your graphics.

Speaker:

We're gonna get into that as we

Speaker:

talk about this very important topic.

Speaker:

That impacts all podcasts now.

Speaker:

It's something that's often

Speaker:

overlooked in my experience.

Speaker:

When people are thinking about their

Speaker:

podcast and planning it, they often

Speaker:

just think straight towards all of

Speaker:

the logical things about who they're

Speaker:

gonna have on the show, if they're

Speaker:

having anyone at all, what they're

Speaker:

going to talk about, how are they going

Speaker:

to edit it, all of those wonderful

Speaker:

kinds of things.

Speaker:

And then it gets to the point where

Speaker:

they're ready to hit the button to

Speaker:

go and publish it.

Speaker:

What about the graphics?

Speaker:

And quite frankly, a few times that

Speaker:

I see people just jump onto Canva,

Speaker:

nothing wrong with Canva, but you're

Speaker:

playing amateur hour when you're just

Speaker:

doing it yourself.

Speaker:

So my first tip for the graphics is do

Speaker:

not underestimate the value of getting

Speaker:

a professional to do it if you

Speaker:

can afford it.

Speaker:

Get someone to do the graphics, at

Speaker:

least initially, and set up some

Speaker:

templates, and then you've got

Speaker:

a starting point.

Speaker:

So that's a little tip from

Speaker:

me to you to get things started.

Speaker:

But why was I doing a bit of

Speaker:

all of this?

Speaker:

No, I'm not one of members of the

Speaker:

Wiggles, but I want to point out to you

Speaker:

that if you have a look at some of the

Speaker:

great, uh, graphics that exist for

Speaker:

various podcasts, particularly from

Speaker:

the moment we're gonna divert

Speaker:

and talk about YouTube, then

Speaker:

there's a lot of.

Speaker:

Pointing.

Speaker:

There's a lot of different side on

Speaker:

views where people are talking and

Speaker:

this way and that way, and we go

Speaker:

back to over here.

Speaker:

There's a lot of different angles

Speaker:

and things where people are making a

Speaker:

point where they're doing different

Speaker:

things with their hands to try and

Speaker:

get your attention.

Speaker:

Into the graphics, and it is important

Speaker:

when you look at YouTube in

Speaker:

particular, and we are talking about

Speaker:

this separately, but we are gonna

Speaker:

go into the podcast platforms for

Speaker:

everything else in just a moment.

Speaker:

When you look at YouTube, the

Speaker:

differentiator is you often see all

Speaker:

of the graphics for a whole bunch

Speaker:

of different things all at once

Speaker:

on your channel.

Speaker:

So you want one thing to stand out

Speaker:

from the next, if you've gone down

Speaker:

the path of every episode, graphic

Speaker:

looking the same.

Speaker:

Then YouTube, you have to think about

Speaker:

it differently if you want to attract

Speaker:

some attention.

Speaker:

So let's take a step back and let's,

Speaker:

'cause we want to go into all of these

Speaker:

other platforms, but I wanna take a step

Speaker:

back and say to you, the first thing that

Speaker:

you need to do, and we kind of alluded

Speaker:

to it a little bit, is professional

Speaker:

photography.

Speaker:

Nothing beats a professional,

Speaker:

taking some great photographs of you.

Speaker:

If you're going to do it, make sure

Speaker:

you get them in.

Speaker:

Doing all of those different hand

Speaker:

movements and lots of things.

Speaker:

Change your, your shirt or your top,

Speaker:

whatever you're wearing a few times.

Speaker:

Get a few different variations so you

Speaker:

can have a podcast ready to go.

Speaker:

Of course, unless your brand is

Speaker:

such that you wear the same

Speaker:

thing every single time and kudos to

Speaker:

someone like, uh.

Speaker:

Steve Butler from Diary of a

Speaker:

CEO, that's what he's fallen upon.

Speaker:

He's known for wearing the same

Speaker:

sort of outfit all the time, and

Speaker:

plenty of people do that and it works

Speaker:

really nicely.

Speaker:

But if you don't have that and

Speaker:

you don't want to do that.

Speaker:

Then make sure you account for it

Speaker:

when you're taking your professional

Speaker:

photographs, because you want to make

Speaker:

sure that you look different in

Speaker:

different episodes as needed, and

Speaker:

to reflect who you are and what

Speaker:

you're about.

Speaker:

So there's another little

Speaker:

tip coming your way is make sure

Speaker:

that the podcast.

Speaker:

Graphics fit your brand.

Speaker:

Make sure they are relevant to your

Speaker:

audience, and set the kind of style

Speaker:

and agenda that you want for your brand.

Speaker:

Is it moody?

Speaker:

Is it vibrant?

Speaker:

Are there particular colors that

Speaker:

work better with your audience?

Speaker:

Is there a particular style

Speaker:

that works better with your audience?

Speaker:

Make sure that it matches who

Speaker:

you are as well.

Speaker:

Don't put yourself out of where you

Speaker:

are comfortable.

Speaker:

Make sure that it's reflective.

Speaker:

Of you and your values, but at the

Speaker:

same time helps you stand out

Speaker:

and be a little bit different.

Speaker:

So it is an important thing

Speaker:

for you to consider as you're going

Speaker:

down the path of graphics.

Speaker:

Just make sure that it is on brand Now,

Speaker:

on brand is two different things.

Speaker:

I'd like to say here, maybe

Speaker:

actually three.

Speaker:

There's the brand that is your

Speaker:

personal brand.

Speaker:

That's one thing, and the way you

Speaker:

present yourself.

Speaker:

The second brand is your business

Speaker:

brand and the third brand is

Speaker:

your podcast brand.

Speaker:

Now, they may not all be the

Speaker:

same thing.

Speaker:

Now you definitely have to make your

Speaker:

personal brand fit in with your podcast

Speaker:

if you are gonna be part of it, because

Speaker:

you're gonna be front and center or.

Speaker:

You can take a different approach

Speaker:

and not have photographs in your

Speaker:

podcast, and we'll come to that option

Speaker:

in just a moment.

Speaker:

But if you are going down that path of

Speaker:

photographs, then you must make sure

Speaker:

that at least your personal brand and

Speaker:

the brand of your podcast match.

Speaker:

Now sometimes, and actually more

Speaker:

often than not.

Speaker:

The podcast brand is separate to your

Speaker:

business brand.

Speaker:

They don't have to be the same.

Speaker:

They can work hand in hand, and that

Speaker:

is a great thing when that happens.

Speaker:

But sometimes you've created a brand that

Speaker:

will sit alongside and compliment

Speaker:

your business brand, but it might

Speaker:

have a little bit more flexibility

Speaker:

than the brand that you have for

Speaker:

your business for different reasons.

Speaker:

It can sit differently on a

Speaker:

different website altogether.

Speaker:

And so one can reference the other,

Speaker:

but there is a difference between

Speaker:

the two brands.

Speaker:

So have a think about what direction

Speaker:

you want to go as far as your brand

Speaker:

is concerned.

Speaker:

Now I'm gonna come to that option I

Speaker:

just spoke about in a minute.

Speaker:

Do you need photographs in

Speaker:

your, uh, graphics for your podcast?

Speaker:

And remember, we are thinking here

Speaker:

about three kinds of graphics, right?

Speaker:

You are thinking about the epi,

Speaker:

the graphics for the show overall.

Speaker:

You're thinking about the episode

Speaker:

based graphics and you're thinking

Speaker:

about the YouTube variations.

Speaker:

Now, we are going to have a download

Speaker:

off of back in the show notes

Speaker:

in this program, of this program

Speaker:

that will give you information about

Speaker:

the different sizes and requirements

Speaker:

that you might have, uh, for, uh,

Speaker:

different podcast for your different,

Speaker:

um, platforms.

Speaker:

And we'll try and include all of

Speaker:

that information as well as lots of

Speaker:

examples of what different people do,

Speaker:

particularly some of the well-known ones.

Speaker:

What we think is good and, uh, what

Speaker:

you might learn from all of those.

Speaker:

So we're gonna put that into

Speaker:

a download.

Speaker:

So pay it, pay attention to

Speaker:

the show notes.

Speaker:

You'll be able to get, uh, a copy

Speaker:

of that, uh, guide in the download.

Speaker:

Meanwhile, coming back to it, I

Speaker:

think that whether you have graphic,

Speaker:

whether you just wanna go down

Speaker:

the graphics path and not include

Speaker:

yourself in the pod, in the, in

Speaker:

the, uh, graphics, I should say.

Speaker:

You just wanna have generic kind

Speaker:

of shapes, sizes, images, other

Speaker:

things that you want to use, that

Speaker:

is definitely a path that many podcasters

Speaker:

have gone down.

Speaker:

So if you really are adverse to

Speaker:

the photos and you really want to have

Speaker:

a different focus, you can do that Now.

Speaker:

Make sure again, that you get some

Speaker:

variations so that they do stand out

Speaker:

and look different.

Speaker:

Now, what I would say to all of that

Speaker:

is that if you are going to have guests

Speaker:

on your program.

Speaker:

Why not get some decent photos of

Speaker:

your guests as well.

Speaker:

Now, either they have some

Speaker:

professional photographs that

Speaker:

are available that you can use.

Speaker:

They might have some online that

Speaker:

you can just choose from or make sure

Speaker:

that you're taking some stills from

Speaker:

the podcast itself.

Speaker:

Even pause to do that properly at

Speaker:

the end of the recording and get

Speaker:

a few variations in there that you

Speaker:

can use of them.

Speaker:

You can of course take it from some of

Speaker:

the videos as well and utilize that.

Speaker:

Now, what I would say to you about

Speaker:

the graphics.

Speaker:

When you use a person, someone

Speaker:

else, find a, uh, I should say a guest

Speaker:

on there, find a style that is

Speaker:

going to work for you consistently

Speaker:

so people know that it's still

Speaker:

your podcast, and that it's not just

Speaker:

about that person.

Speaker:

Because remember, you are still the

Speaker:

expert on your show.

Speaker:

You must be the expert.

Speaker:

And it's something I've talked about

Speaker:

often and it's why I believe you

Speaker:

need a cohost, but we're not gonna go

Speaker:

into more of that.

Speaker:

Just now, except to say that don't

Speaker:

underestimate the value of making

Speaker:

sure that your brand is still

Speaker:

front and center.

Speaker:

That's why I do like you to have

Speaker:

your own photographs and to be part of

Speaker:

it as much as you possibly can, but I

Speaker:

do understand where that doesn't always

Speaker:

work for everyone.

Speaker:

So what else do you need to know

Speaker:

about the graphics for your podcast?

Speaker:

Well.

Speaker:

There are some variations that

Speaker:

are happening more and more with some

Speaker:

of the different platforms, and you

Speaker:

can pay attention to that, and a lot

Speaker:

of the publishing platforms give you

Speaker:

an opportunity to put some different

Speaker:

graphics in place depending on where

Speaker:

they're coming from.

Speaker:

Remember as well when you're looking

Speaker:

at graphics to think of, again, going

Speaker:

back to YouTube.

Speaker:

But not just YouTube.

Speaker:

When you're publishing on

Speaker:

social media and you're publishing

Speaker:

short reels from it, there's another

Speaker:

kind of graphic that you might want

Speaker:

to use from that.

Speaker:

It's going to be a different size and

Speaker:

format, depending on whether it's

Speaker:

a landscape or portrait style need.

Speaker:

So again, the graphics play a

Speaker:

really important role in all of that.

Speaker:

You want to make sure that you get

Speaker:

some basics so that people know

Speaker:

who you are, what it's about, and

Speaker:

uh, can recognize that this is coming

Speaker:

from your podcast.

Speaker:

So that people pay attention to it.

Speaker:

The one thing you would say about

Speaker:

many of the great, uh, top podcasts

Speaker:

that we have going around, and I'm

Speaker:

gonna keep using Diary of a CEO as

Speaker:

an example, because it is the easy one

Speaker:

that many people know, and there is a

Speaker:

certain mood, there is a certain style.

Speaker:

And the minute you see that, you know

Speaker:

what you're going to get, you know where

Speaker:

it's coming from.

Speaker:

So it is an important thing to

Speaker:

think about getting it all right.

Speaker:

As far as your podcast

Speaker:

is concerned.

Speaker:

So we've talked about.

Speaker:

The need for professional

Speaker:

photographs.

Speaker:

We touched on it the beginning, a little

Speaker:

bit about the need for professional

Speaker:

designer to come up with something.

Speaker:

I really think that that is a

Speaker:

key thing to do.

Speaker:

Now you can, of course, use a lot

Speaker:

of AI tools to try and come up with

Speaker:

some variations.

Speaker:

People have asked me as well, can

Speaker:

you use caricatures of yourself?

Speaker:

Look, I suppose it really depends

Speaker:

on your market.

Speaker:

There are a lot of people that

Speaker:

will take a step back from the ai.

Speaker:

Uh.

Speaker:

Producing stuff because often there

Speaker:

is a giveaway that it is AI and people

Speaker:

have different reactions to that.

Speaker:

It so much depends on your audience

Speaker:

and what your brand is about and what

Speaker:

you're trying to say as to whether

Speaker:

that's the path.

Speaker:

I would say to you that if you're using

Speaker:

it because you are hiding from getting

Speaker:

actual photographs taken, then that's

Speaker:

not the right reason to use it.

Speaker:

But again.

Speaker:

These tools that there are, that

Speaker:

exist out there, and whether it's

Speaker:

ai, whether it's a Canva, or whether

Speaker:

it's one of the many other platforms,

Speaker:

Adobe and and various others

Speaker:

that exist out there where you can

Speaker:

do the graphics.

Speaker:

There's one thing to have the tools

Speaker:

in front of you.

Speaker:

It is a whole nother thing to actually

Speaker:

have the ability to use them properly.

Speaker:

And then there's a whole nother

Speaker:

thing to actually have a sense of

Speaker:

design itself.

Speaker:

It's easy to follow templates, but

Speaker:

are the templates the best ones to

Speaker:

suit your brand?

Speaker:

It is worthwhile going down the path

Speaker:

of getting someone, as I said at the

Speaker:

beginning, to at least put some of

Speaker:

your own templates together so that

Speaker:

you can follow them into the future.

Speaker:

Something definitely, I'd say

Speaker:

worth investing in.

Speaker:

So there's a lot of points to

Speaker:

think about when it comes to the,

Speaker:

uh, the graphics for your podcast.

Speaker:

And there's a lot of things to think

Speaker:

about in terms of.

Speaker:

Sizing.

Speaker:

And again, one of the things that I

Speaker:

want you to consider is how much text

Speaker:

you put onto the actual, uh, onto

Speaker:

the actual graphic.

Speaker:

There is a tendency to overdo them.

Speaker:

Now, what I would say to you is

Speaker:

that there are two different titles

Speaker:

that you might want to have for

Speaker:

a podcast episode.

Speaker:

Title number one is the one that will

Speaker:

really get people to jump when they

Speaker:

search for you.

Speaker:

You want that to be the title that

Speaker:

that brings them in.

Speaker:

Now, that often can be something,

Speaker:

is a how to kind of format or why

Speaker:

sort of format and they can be longer

Speaker:

and to the, you know, to what you

Speaker:

can, uh, have in terms of characters

Speaker:

for YouTube, for Spotify,

Speaker:

apple, et cetera.

Speaker:

But then there's the.

Speaker:

The wording in the text, the

Speaker:

characters, the amount that

Speaker:

puts onto your actual graphic.

Speaker:

Remember, the majority of the time

Speaker:

people are looking at these graphics

Speaker:

on their phone.

Speaker:

There is not a lot of real estate, so

Speaker:

if you have a long name, you're gonna

Speaker:

have a smaller font and it's gonna be a

Speaker:

lot harder to read.

Speaker:

Remember the name of the podcast,

Speaker:

the details of it will also come up.

Speaker:

A title below the actual graphic.

Speaker:

So you don't need the full title

Speaker:

to be in there.

Speaker:

You need the main points.

Speaker:

Now, often that's easier.

Speaker:

If it is about a guest and that

Speaker:

guest is well known, then you

Speaker:

can most certainly just feature that,

Speaker:

uh, as being a primary part.

Speaker:

And that might be all that appears

Speaker:

in the graphic of the title.

Speaker:

Sometimes it's not about the guest, or

Speaker:

the guest may not be that well known,

Speaker:

so it's a major point that you want

Speaker:

to have in there.

Speaker:

So choose those words carefully.

Speaker:

As fuel words as possible.

Speaker:

What I would say to you is ditch

Speaker:

words like podcast.

Speaker:

It's not necessary for you to use

Speaker:

the word podcast in a graphic

Speaker:

from the show.

Speaker:

They already know it's a podcast.

Speaker:

You're there on that episode.

Speaker:

Numbers is another really

Speaker:

interesting one.

Speaker:

I've noted that there are some

Speaker:

people that love to have every

Speaker:

episode numbered and they love to

Speaker:

tell you how many episodes they're

Speaker:

up to as well as part of the show.

Speaker:

To my way of thinking,

Speaker:

that doesn't really matter

Speaker:

all that much.

Speaker:

The listener doesn't really care.

Speaker:

They're coming in and listening to

Speaker:

that particular episode, and in

Speaker:

fact, you can actually make the

Speaker:

listeners feel quite bad if they

Speaker:

come in at episode number 126 and they

Speaker:

think, oh geez, I've got 126 episodes

Speaker:

to catch up on.

Speaker:

No, they don't.

Speaker:

They can just start at episode

Speaker:

126 because unless you are.

Speaker:

Operating at like a, like a series

Speaker:

where they have to go chronologically

Speaker:

through everything, which most

Speaker:

podcasts don't do, then it doesn't

Speaker:

really matter.

Speaker:

So let them start where they want

Speaker:

to start and focus more on the topic

Speaker:

and use their real estate better rather

Speaker:

than wasting it on episode numbers.

Speaker:

So just another tip for, to make

Speaker:

sure you get those things right.

Speaker:

So there's lots of things to think

Speaker:

about as well.

Speaker:

Make sure that the font is consistent,

Speaker:

that you use.

Speaker:

Try and get a consistent style,

Speaker:

uh, typography, uh, consistent

Speaker:

color batch.

Speaker:

You might have some different color

Speaker:

variations on, on each of them, but

Speaker:

make sure there is a kind of co

Speaker:

consistency in that.

Speaker:

And again, a great graphic designer is

Speaker:

going to help you set that up as well.

Speaker:

So there are lots of things to

Speaker:

think about when it comes to the

Speaker:

graphics for your podcast episodes,

Speaker:

and it's something that you've gotta

Speaker:

consistently tweak what works today.

Speaker:

You may need to change it tomorrow

Speaker:

to see how that variation goes.

Speaker:

So remember, it's about your

Speaker:

audience and building that with

Speaker:

thumb consistency.

Speaker:

So I want to counter a little

Speaker:

bit something that I said earlier on.

Speaker:

In terms of making every episode

Speaker:

different, is that a must?

Speaker:

Well, for YouTube, I believe it is for

Speaker:

when it comes to your, um, when it

Speaker:

comes to the other platforms, I don't

Speaker:

think it matters quite as much again,

Speaker:

because it's the nature of how people

Speaker:

are scrolling.

Speaker:

More often than not, when someone

Speaker:

comes to a, uh, a Spotify or an Apple

Speaker:

or Amazon music for that matter.

Speaker:

You've been told what podcast to

Speaker:

go and listen to.

Speaker:

Someone's referred you to it or you've

Speaker:

heard about it.

Speaker:

You're not generally going there to

Speaker:

search, and you're certainly not

Speaker:

generally going there to look at

Speaker:

what is the most attractive one

Speaker:

You want to find the person or the

Speaker:

particular podcast that you know about.

Speaker:

And then when it comes to the

Speaker:

episode, graphics for that, does

Speaker:

it matter that they're variations?

Speaker:

No, because again, I think people are

Speaker:

scrolling through the titles and

Speaker:

more often than not they're gonna

Speaker:

go to the most recent episode.

Speaker:

So can you get away with consistent

Speaker:

graphics every time?

Speaker:

Look, I think you can when you're

Speaker:

focusing on those primary platforms,

Speaker:

but the minute you start looking at

Speaker:

YouTube and you start counter and

Speaker:

start looking at that space, I think

Speaker:

it's a different story and you have

Speaker:

to start looking at those variations

Speaker:

for there.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Again, you can get away with one

Speaker:

particular style initially, and

Speaker:

then you might graduate and move

Speaker:

to the others.

Speaker:

The other little tip, and I'm gonna

Speaker:

give you this as a last tip as well,

Speaker:

is to sometimes to freshen up your

Speaker:

episodes, go back and simply refresh

Speaker:

the graphics, particularly

Speaker:

for YouTube.

Speaker:

That can be a way of getting people to

Speaker:

draw some attention to something

Speaker:

that you wouldn't see otherwise.

Speaker:

Now, unlike the Spotify, apple and

Speaker:

and Amazon music style platforms.

Speaker:

Where they're not predominantly

Speaker:

used as a search.

Speaker:

YouTube is used as a search.

Speaker:

So if people, people may only discover

Speaker:

your podcast because they've looked at

Speaker:

a particular topic.

Speaker:

So the attractiveness of

Speaker:

what you've got to offer and the

Speaker:

fact that the next videos that come

Speaker:

up in your sequence look different may

Speaker:

well be a thing that attracts them.

Speaker:

So it's always good to test it

Speaker:

and to see what works for you.

Speaker:

The most important point, I think,

Speaker:

is to be on brand, get professional

Speaker:

photographs.

Speaker:

Most definitely use a professional

Speaker:

graphic designer to help get

Speaker:

you started.

Speaker:

It's one of the reasons why when

Speaker:

it comes to working with a lot of

Speaker:

clients as I do, we offer that as a

Speaker:

service to make sure that they do get

Speaker:

some professional graphics done right

Speaker:

from the outset.

Speaker:

Because laying that platform for

Speaker:

something consistent and creating that

Speaker:

brand is such an important thing

Speaker:

for your podcast.

Speaker:

So here's what I want you to do.

Speaker:

Go away.

Speaker:

Think about how, uh, you can improve

Speaker:

your graphics if you haven't got

Speaker:

them there yet.

Speaker:

If you are not yet a podcaster, if

Speaker:

you are planning on doing it, make

Speaker:

sure you include graphics as very

Speaker:

much central to what you think you are

Speaker:

going to do, because it is a really

Speaker:

important part of making sure that

Speaker:

there are eyeballs on your particular

Speaker:

episode all the time and your

Speaker:

particular show.

Speaker:

Make it fresh, make it vibrant, make

Speaker:

it in keeping with your master brand

Speaker:

of your business, but you are allowed

Speaker:

to be a little bit different.

Speaker:

So I hope that's given you a lot of

Speaker:

tips on what to do with your podcast.

Speaker:

Episode graphics.

Speaker:

I hope you've understood some of

Speaker:

those great things.

Speaker:

And reminder as well, check out

Speaker:

the show notes.

Speaker:

We're gonna have a download.

Speaker:

We spent a bit of time working on

Speaker:

that and producing some really

Speaker:

great information about sizing.

Speaker:

Some examples that you've got

Speaker:

to go off from various podcasts.

Speaker:

And some reference points that I think

Speaker:

will be really good examples for

Speaker:

you to follow when you start your

Speaker:

podcast journey.

Speaker:

And remember, if you are interested in

Speaker:

hearing more about how podcasts done

Speaker:

for You can work and take care of

Speaker:

everything from the strategy through

Speaker:

to the recording itself, right?

Speaker:

Co-host shows for people right

Speaker:

through to the end step where

Speaker:

we will publish podcasts for you.

Speaker:

And of course, we'll give you lots of

Speaker:

graphics and things to go with your

Speaker:

social media and everything else.

Speaker:

So that's all from me in this

Speaker:
