Torrey:Hello, my modern NGO leader.
Torrey:I hope you're having a wonderful week.
Torrey:And have you ever given your team full independence on a project only to find
Torrey:the results were not what you expected?
Torrey:It's a common leadership trap, confusing, empowerment, and abandonment.
Torrey:But today I'll share four simple steps that will help you and your
Torrey:team become truly independent without sacrificing accountability or equality.
Torrey:The modern NGO Leader way.
Torrey:So in this episode, you're gonna discover the common myth that
Torrey:leads some supervisors to fail at creating a truly independent team.
Torrey:Why creating an independent team does not mean allowing that team to do
Torrey:whatever they want and how to find the balance between independence
Torrey:and also support accountability.
Torrey:I see this all the time with my students.
Torrey:One of the things that I really emphasize and I teach is empowering and
Torrey:providing more independence to our teams.
Torrey:But what I found is that leaders tend to move from one extreme of telling
Torrey:them what to do to and how to do it to the other of stepping back completely
Torrey:and leaving them to figure it all out.
Torrey:But independence without support doesn't feel like empowerment to your team.
Torrey:Instead, it will feel like abandonment.
Torrey:They may feel lost, unsupported, and you won't know if things are
Torrey:getting off track until it's too late.
Torrey:So true independence requires structure.
Torrey:It's not about less leadership, it's about more strategic leadership.
Torrey:So this is the way I like to frame it.
Torrey:Think of your team like a plane on a long flight.
Torrey:If a pilot never adjusts their course throughout the flight, they
Torrey:can end up really far off track.
Torrey:In the same way, if you never check in with your team, their results may veer
Torrey:away far away from your expectations.
Torrey:So strategic course correction keeps them aligned without
Torrey:taking away their independence.
Torrey:So here are four steps that I teach in my course that help
Torrey:leaders empower their teams while still maintaining accountability.
Torrey:One is to tell them what you're doing.
Torrey:It's really important that you're going to inform them that your plan is to give
Torrey:them more independence and how and why you're doing that, and especially the why.
Torrey:We need to understand or make them understand why we are choosing
Torrey:to give them more independence and how it benefits them.
Torrey:And that is we want them to become more independent so they
Torrey:can grow professionally, so they can advance, but also so they
Torrey:can get stronger at what they do.
Torrey:And so you can show that you really, truly trust them.
Torrey:This is one of the most important steps that you can take when you're moving
Torrey:from more of a telling leadership style to a empowering leadership style.
Torrey:I think this is, so Im important that I actually dedicate a
Torrey:week of my course to this.
Torrey:Alright, so that's the first one.
Torrey:Tell them what you're doing.
Torrey:Number two, safe failure.
Torrey:That is setting up boundaries.
Torrey:If you delegate something or you allow them to do it in their way, make sure that
Torrey:you don't just allow them to do it without any type of guidelines or guardrails.
Torrey:You need to give them a budget, a timeframe, some parameters
Torrey:so that they have independent thinking between those parameters.
Torrey:It allows for creativity without them going way off the deep end.
Torrey:Number three is to focus on results and not the how.
Torrey:So in other words, being very clear and defining upfront what's
Torrey:the success of whatever it is, the thing the project done looks like.
Torrey:Make sure that you both agree on the end result and what
Torrey:makes a high quality result,
Torrey:and that way you can both agree on this is the destination.
Torrey:And yes, it is important that we, go along smoothly along the way, but it's
Torrey:okay if the how or how they reach the destination might look a little bit
Torrey:differently from the way we would do it.
Torrey:Number four check-ins, having regular check-ins, and once again,
Torrey:upfront deciding how often you want to have these check-ins.
Torrey:But it's good to have these regular checkpoints and you can agree when
Torrey:to check in and what type of progress should have been made by those points,
Torrey:especially for larger projects, so that you don't just abandon them or
Torrey:assume that they're doing what they need to do, and then when you check
Torrey:in at the very end, it is too late.
Torrey:So when we establish upfront these checkpoints, we feel more comfortable
Torrey:that we've agreed to these things upfront.
Torrey:And so holding them accountable is part of the process.
Torrey:It's already built in.
Torrey:So once again, the four steps are inform them why you're giving them more
Torrey:independence and how it benefits them.
Torrey:Allowing for safe failure and setting boundaries so they
Torrey:don't go way outside the lines.
Torrey:Focus on the results and what the results look like by the end of the
Torrey:project and not the how to get there.
Torrey:And establish check-ins in advance so that you both agree how often
Torrey:you'll be providing support.
Torrey:So the key here is to set up your team member for success
Torrey:from the very beginning.
Torrey:This way, you'll feel more comfortable giving them the independence.
Torrey:They will feel more supported.
Torrey:And you've already agreed for ways to stay on track.
Torrey:Remember, they have the same goal as you to create high quality work.
Torrey:And also to grow professionally.
Torrey:So by following these four steps, you can help them take more responsibility while
Torrey:also feeling like you're not abandoning them and are still providing support.
Torrey:Okay, so here's my challenge for you this week.
Torrey:Choose one project or task that your team member is doing
Torrey:and apply these four steps.
Torrey:Communicate clearly, allow for safe failure, agree on the
Torrey:results, and set regular check-ins.
Torrey:Notice how much easier it feels to empower your team when you're built the right
Torrey:support system around them in advance.
