Heather:

Mental health problems are a huge issue at the moment.

Heather:

As is brain health.

Heather:

There are certain ways you can keep your mind and brain.

Heather:

Exercised and well,

Heather:

A lot of these ways are really common, such as mindfulness, yoga.

Heather:

Stretching exercise.

Heather:

The things we've all had of.

Heather:

In this episode.

Heather:

I wanted to explore four ways.

Heather:

You may not have considered.

Heather:

None of these are expensive.

Heather:

They're all free.

Heather:

And there.

Heather:

Scientifically backed.

Heather:

In improving your mind.

Heather:

And your brain function.

Heather:

That's all coming up in this week's episode of the choosing happy podcast.

Heather:

Hello, I'm has a masters.

Heather:

Welcome to the choosing happy podcast and this episode for obvious ways

Heather:

to nurture your mind for happiness.

Heather:

It might.

Heather:

Not surprise you to know The number one thing.

Heather:

To keep you healthy in your mind.

Heather:

And your brain is actually to begin to take care of yourself.

Heather:

Um, most of the ways to nurture your mind we're discussing today.

Heather:

Fall into that category.

Heather:

I'm going to start with number one, I'm going to call it the taking

Heather:

care of yourself and your mind.

Heather:

Solution.

Heather:

When you talk to a close friends and they're really down and depressed.

Heather:

And the struggling to get through life.

Heather:

It's easy to come up with a whole list of suggestions of things they

Heather:

can try to keep themselves motivated.

Heather:

The last thing you want is for them to give up on life.

Heather:

To be in.

Heather:

A life of despair.

Heather:

And to be down so that they're almost unfunctioning.

Heather:

Yes.

Heather:

Under the same circumstances.

Heather:

We rarely give ourselves the same advice.

Heather:

One of the.

Heather:

Main ways to.

Heather:

I stay in a liveliness to stay with an alert, mind to stay motivated.

Heather:

Two.

Heather:

Nurture your mental health.

Heather:

Is to find something to truly care about something that's important.

Heather:

And that matters to you.

Heather:

That matters enough to you.

Heather:

To get out of bed in the morning.

Heather:

Um, when that is something to do with self care.

Heather:

That helps even more.

Heather:

Now not talking about being selfish.

Heather:

If you can't show up for yourself, how can you show up for other people?

Heather:

Self care.

Heather:

Is vitally important for wellbeing

Heather:

. The idea is to treat yourself as

Heather:

If you had a guest staying over for the weekend sink of the list of things

Heather:

that you would automatically do to ensure their stay is really exceptional

Heather:

and that you're taking care of them.

Heather:

Simple things.

Heather:

Like how you talk to a good friend when they're down.

Heather:

It's probably very different from how you talk to yourself.

Heather:

Probably.

Heather:

Judge yourself.

Heather:

Maybe even criticize yourself.

Heather:

Give yourself a hard time.

Heather:

Rather than giving yourself grace and ease.

Heather:

And accepting the actually life is hard and we all struggle through each day.

Heather:

We all have challenges.

Heather:

And we all have that inner voice who wants to beat us down.

Heather:

Which dog do we feed.

Heather:

Can we change our perspective.

Heather:

Can we really look at things as if we were talking to our best friend.

Heather:

If you make that mistake, do you really have to be so hard on

Heather:

yourself or can you acknowledge that?

Heather:

It's not going to.

Heather:

Be the end of the world.

Heather:

It's recoverable.

Heather:

And you can start again.

Heather:

And you've learnt something.

Heather:

When you wake up in the morning.

Heather:

Can you choose that today is going to be a day that you're going to feel.

Heather:

Alive.

Heather:

You're going to carefully yourself.

Heather:

You're going to exercise.

Heather:

You're going to have that shower, all those things, those common things that

Heather:

help us with our mind and mental health.

Heather:

Such as, to Keep moving.

Heather:

To listen to good music.

Heather:

To sing that favorite song at the top of our voice in the shower.

Heather:

Are you going to speak to yourself?

Heather:

Uh, someone you care for.

Heather:

With self-respect.

Heather:

So when you can be proud of.

Heather:

Um, pride is interesting.

Heather:

I struggle with the SIF pride because of all of the myths around pride pride

Heather:

comes before a fall for instance.

Heather:

. Yeah.

Heather:

So there's a certain level of pride, a certain level of self-respect

Heather:

that we all must have in order.

Heather:

To get up and to face the world and to truly show up in at least 80 to 90%.

Heather:

Of AR.

Heather:

Potential.

Heather:

If we don't have price.

Heather:

We won't step up toward our full potential.

Heather:

it's being a bit of a difficult lesson for me, that one.

Heather:

It's easy.

Heather:

To do nothing.

Heather:

It's easy.

Heather:

To not show up.

Heather:

It's easy to show up at 40 50%.

Heather:

And then to moan about how the world's treating us.

Heather:

And what a hard and tough place is.

Heather:

Again, another lesson for me is just to accept.

Heather:

That's the world is wonderful.

Heather:

It's magical.

Heather:

Ans.

Heather:

It just throws loads of stuff at you that will bring you to your

Heather:

knees is how you get up again.

Heather:

That matters.

Heather:

So take care of yourself.

Heather:

Give yourself grace.

Heather:

Two things.

Heather:

That make yourself proud.

Heather:

And be proud enough.

Heather:

To do things that matter.

Heather:

Have high Standards for yourself.

Heather:

Standards that you.

Heather:

Expect from others.

Heather:

That help you rise.

Heather:

To help you stay standing tall.

Heather:

In a world.

Heather:

Where people.

Heather:

are often , crouching down and hiding.

Heather:

The next.

Heather:

An obvious way to nurture your mind.

Heather:

Kind of follows on from this.

Heather:

And it's about intentions.

Heather:

Having intentions for everything that he do and following

Heather:

through with those intentions.

Heather:

Actually saying out loud.

Heather:

I intend to do this and I intend to get this result.

Heather:

So that you're making a contract with yourself and with the universe.

Heather:

Are you going to show up?

Heather:

You're going to give it your best.

Heather:

And that you're going to be open to receive all of the help that

Heather:

the universe can send your way.

Heather:

Setting an intention is setting a commitment to

Heather:

yourself and to the universe.

Heather:

And it's setting.

Heather:

Something deep inside that tells your unconscious mind.

Heather:

That you're going to do this.

Heather:

You can do this.

Heather:

Sometimes.

Heather:

For one and two.

Heather:

there feels like there's Something missing.

Heather:

Maybe That's the permission to matter.

Heather:

The permission to set the intention to commit to succeed.

Heather:

Be purposeful.

Heather:

Give yourself permission.

Heather:

And set an intention.

Heather:

Over and over again.

Heather:

For each thing that you.

Heather:

Set out to do during the day.

Heather:

For instance, if you're sitting down to work.

Heather:

You can set the intention, . I'm going to do my social media engagement for exactly.

Heather:

30 minutes.

Heather:

With the intention to serve and build long lasting relationships

Heather:

with those I meet online.

Heather:

When you sit down to write your copy.

Heather:

If you're a marketer.

Heather:

Set the intention.

Heather:

That you're going to write the best copy that you can within the next hour.

Heather:

If you're traveling to work and you're driving.

Heather:

Set the intention that you're going to have the best journey.

Heather:

That it's going to flow with ease.

Heather:

You're going to get there on time.

Heather:

You going to be calm and relaxed and enjoy the journey.

Heather:

We've mentioned exercise.

Heather:

Uh, number three.

Heather:

It's the mental benefits of dance

Heather:

. Dan says existed for thousands of years.

Heather:

And we know that moving your body.

Heather:

It's a popular way.

Heather:

To express yourself and to exercise.

Heather:

But dancing offers many benefits for mental health and brain function.

Heather:

It offers benefits for your emotions, your intelligence, your relationships.

Heather:

Learning and practicing dance can improve your self esteem.

Heather:

Again, the amount that you respect and value yourself as yourself esteem.

Heather:

And showing yourself that you can learn and master new moves and skills.

Heather:

Through dance.

Heather:

Can improve your self esteem and confidence.

Heather:

It improves your mood and attitude.

Heather:

While you move while you're learning while you're performing, while

Heather:

you're just relaxing into the music.

Heather:

Your mood can lift and change alongside the groove of the music and

Heather:

just the endorphins being released.

Heather:

Helping you.

Heather:

Feel so much better.

Heather:

If you go out to dance, it can help you meet new people.

Heather:

And create social interaction.

Heather:

We know.

Heather:

That talking and spending time with others improves your mood.

Heather:

It also eases loneliness.

Heather:

And through that it can ease suppression and anxiety.

Heather:

It raises your heart rate and works your muscles and can help with symptoms

Heather:

of depression, anxiety by releasing certain chemicals in your brain.

Heather:

It's also provides a way to escape, repetitive, negative thoughts and worries.

Heather:

And it protects your memory.

Heather:

Learning to dance.

Heather:

Can help you.

Heather:

Forge new neural pathways, especially as you get older.

Heather:

Learning different moves and styles of dance sharpens, your ability to

Heather:

remember these kinds of details, and this can help prevent dementia.

Heather:

Number four.

Heather:

It's something I learned through near linguistic programming.

Heather:

As a practitioner, master practitioner and now trainer.

Heather:

It's using peripheral vision.

Heather:

Fovial vision.

Heather:

It's the vision that we're almost conditioned to using today.

Heather:

Fovial vision is when we're using screens and we are focused and

Heather:

we often become tunnel visions into, well, we're looking at.

Heather:

We can be blind to anything outside of that screen.

Heather:

Peripheral vision.

Heather:

Is the use of wider . Vision to the sides of your eyes and around.

Heather:

If you take it more advanced as we do for training, you can.

Heather:

Almost see behind you.

Heather:

You.

Heather:

Shift your awareness with your peripheral vision.

Heather:

So it feels like you actually see behind you.

Heather:

But what peripheral vision actually does.

Heather:

Is it changes the way your brain works as well.

Heather:

It opens you up.

Heather:

It opens up your awareness.

Heather:

You're focused in a different way.

Heather:

It's can cause you to detach The emotions.

Heather:

So it stops the, the mind chatter.

Heather:

And the negative emotions.

Heather:

It helps you relax.

Heather:

And it helps you concentrate.

Heather:

Within neuro-linguistic programming.

Heather:

It's called the learning state.

Heather:

It's from a.

Heather:

Huna Hawaiian technique called Hakalau

Heather:

. The learning state is absolutely

Heather:

environment to concentrate on learning.

Heather:

It's also one of the solutions that can be practiced to reduce the effects of ADHD.

Heather:

We teach it to children, as It can really help them improve their grades.

Heather:

By switching your attention from part internal thoughts, part external

Heather:

awareness to a hundred percent attention.

Heather:

And the external environment.

Heather:

You're able to take in far more of what's going on.

Heather:

This means that you relax into your environment and you're able

Heather:

to improve your retention of any learning that you may be doing.

Heather:

Hence, that's why it's called the learning state.

Heather:

So when you want to relax, when you want to learn, when you want to turn off

Heather:

the internal chatter, then try hakalau

Heather:

. I've included instructions in the show notes.

Heather:

Scientifically speaking peripheral vision is the element of overall vision.

Heather:

Which occurs outside the center of the gaze.

Heather:

When you speak of seeing something out of the corner of your eye, you're

Heather:

referring to peripheral vision.

Heather:

Here are some cool facts.

Heather:

The not commonly known.

Heather:

About peripheral vision.

Heather:

Athletes undergo sports vision training that includes improving peripheral vision.

Heather:

Very few people are born with perfect sight.

Heather:

And peripheral vision is important.

Heather:

Athletes are trained to be aware of their periphery and notice actions that are

Heather:

not occurring directly in front of them.

Heather:

Peripheral vision is a safety supporter.

Heather:

It allows us to see objects from the site helping to prevent side impact crashes.

Heather:

And avoid.

Heather:

Things coming out of left field, literally.

Heather:

It allows us to see better at night.

Heather:

the peripheral vision of a horse is better than a human being.

Heather:

However, because the horse's eyes point to the sides, there's a blind spot

Heather:

efficient right ahead of their noses.

Heather:

Peripheral vision is practically all in black and white and

Heather:

has very low resolution.

Heather:

You don't really notice a difference because the motion.

Heather:

Of the, I will compensate.

Heather:

And peripheral vision.

Heather:

I can help with speed reading.

Heather:

Most people read with the central focus and that prevents them from seeing

Heather:

up to 50% of the words in the text.

Heather:

The value of peripheral vision becomes very apparent when driving a car.

Heather:

The reaction time that protects us from car accidents is also noticeable in

Heather:

self-defense martial arts instructors will point out how peripheral vision

Heather:

allows a person to better defend themselves from on expected the tax.

Heather:

One of the biggest forms of entertainment happens to be video games, which some

Heather:

people claim to be a waste of time.

Heather:

Actually some of those video games can be excellent vision exercises.

Heather:

In order to be an expert in video games, you have to have good peripheral vision.

Heather:

Central fish.

Heather:

And it's not always going to be of help because objects from this.

Heather:

Side of the screen.

Heather:

Or coming towards you.

Heather:

Peripheral vision can be used in meditation.

Heather:

It's pretty normal to close your eyes when meditating, but you can meditate with eyes

Heather:

wide, open use peripheral vision to do it.

Heather:

The reason is that peripheral vision can be used to relax.

Heather:

And coordination with deep breathing, a person performing this type of meditation.

Heather:

We'll concentrate vision on the sides.

Heather:

It's known to relax the visual system.

Heather:

By giving your central vision and much needed break and allowing

Heather:

your mind to focus on other things.

Heather:

Peripheral.

Heather:

Vision is so important for so many reasons.

Heather:

And an individual should appreciate that usage range from safety to recreation.

Heather:

Video games and sports.

Heather:

I've made more interesting and more fun because of peripheral vision.

Heather:

Developing peripheral vision.

Heather:

I can also help in the effort to relax the body.

Heather:

That's the full on obvious ways to nurture your mind.

Heather:

And your brain for happiness.
