Hey folks.
2
:Welcome to Sunday's edition of the
Daily Bible Podcast, and it's very
3
:much like Monday through Friday's
edition, or Monday through Saturday.
4
:Some would say very similar.
5
:Very similar.
6
:Not a lot of differences
except that this is on Sunday.
7
:It is on Sunday.
8
:Like your market.
9
:It's, and it's a unique Sunday.
10
:It's a special Sunday because you
are the one in the pulpit today.
11
:I am I'm really excited.
12
:I always appreciate doing it,
and at the same time, it feels
13
:like such a stressful thing.
14
:I think you're probably used
to it, but whenever I was.
15
:Tasks to cover the main pulpit.
16
:I never did well, my sleep suffered.
17
:My stomach would not work with me.
18
:Here's the thing.
19
:I don't want to be blase about it.
20
:Not that you are No, that's
not my intention to say that.
21
:I just, I appreciate that, this is
gonna sound funny to say it out loud.
22
:I like that I'm stressed out about it.
23
:'cause it tells me I care.
24
:Yeah.
25
:And if I ever did not feel stressed
out about it, I would question
26
:myself and wonder do I feel the
weight of this the way that I should?
27
:So I'm excited.
28
:I'm sure that by the time this
comes, I'm gonna be rip roaring.
29
:I feel like I'm having a baby.
30
:I need to push this thing out, shove
this thing out as quickly as I can.
31
:So I'm excited.
32
:And I hope I'm well slept
by the time this shows up.
33
:What are you preaching?
34
:Psalm 90.
35
:Psalm 90.
36
:It's gonna be a fun time.
37
:Looking at what Moses, it's a song that
Roses Moses writes and it's in response
38
:to some judgment that they go through.
39
:And so one of the.
40
:Best things that he says that I've
memorized and I've repeated ad nauseum
41
:is teach us to number our days so
that we may get a heart of wisdom.
42
:So we're gonna look at that and
consider our days as we look at the
43
:future 2026, while looking back at
the past, God's faithfulness, but
44
:saying, okay, what about the future?
45
:And how do we best live our lives?
46
:And so my anthem is to
make your days count.
47
:Count your days.
48
:Awesome.
49
:And who is.
50
:Tickle the strings on the
guitar this week without you.
51
:David, Walt David tickling the strings.
52
:David will be doing all the tickling.
53
:I don't know if he's tickling
by himself or if he's tickling
54
:other people with David Rappi.
55
:Ddo will be tickling all sorts of things.
56
:Yikes.
57
:Okay.
58
:Yeah, and sad note.
59
:This is so sad.
60
:We have to tear down today.
61
:Yes, we do.
62
:Oh, and I bet you're so sad.
63
:It's gonna be so hard not to be here.
64
:I can't, you know.
65
:You know what?
66
:Here's the thing, bro.
67
:We're gonna let you come back
early and join us, will you?
68
:I know you so generous.
69
:You're gonna want you to do that.
70
:I'm gonna let you do it.
71
:We're gonna let you join us, you know?
72
:Yeah.
73
:Yeah.
74
:Unfortunately, we do gotta tear down,
which is just further motivation
75
:for us to go out and invite people
to church and grow and share the
76
:gospel so that we can get a facility.
77
:I mean, that's like 13 steps down the road
and we don't have to tear down anymore.
78
:Well, it's still to show
up early for some reason.
79
:Yeah, but you know what?
80
:Man, I did not miss it when we
were keeping all that stuff up.
81
:In fact, it felt like a dream.
82
:It was sweet when you show up to church.
83
:Yeah.
84
:And you just like things
are there already.
85
:Yeah.
86
:Oh, that was so nice.
87
:Then you just get to leave and
then you just got to get up
88
:and go and leave from there.
89
:Oh yeah.
90
:We're thankful for
Founder's Classical Academy.
91
:Prosper.
92
:They've been gracious
to let us keep it up.
93
:Yeah.
94
:And we don't wanna take advantage of that
'cause they won't let us do it after all.
95
:Yeah.
96
:Not that we had a
choice, but we're stoked.
97
:Yeah.
98
:And where are you gonna church today?
99
:Today we're out with potentially with
David, Jeremiah, David, Jeremiah.
100
:So, and that was between him
and Joel Holstein as I recall.
101
:Yeah.
102
:I don't know what our, Joyce
Meyer was third place option.
103
:She was third.
104
:Yeah.
105
:I don't know what our
final schedule looks like.
106
:'cause we are leaving to get
back today as well because Wow.
107
:We, our kids have to go back to school Oh.
108
:I think on the sixth, so, okay.
109
:Yeah.
110
:You gotta be back for that.
111
:Yeah.
112
:So I know we're leaving on Sunday.
113
:But yeah, so we may be live
streaming you in the car on our
114
:drive back live streaming, or at
least listening to you on Okay.
115
:In the car on the way back.
116
:I know.
117
:I wanna be live streamed.
118
:I want a whole video on your front screen.
119
:It's gonna be a little earlier 'cause
we're in California for that part.
120
:Oh.
121
:So, okay.
122
:But man, I'm thankful that you're
preaching, filling the pulpit.
123
:I'm thankful to do it.
124
:Grateful to go away.
125
:I'm excited.
126
:Not have to worry about.
127
:Who's in the pulpit or
what they're saying.
128
:Yeah.
129
:Not worrying about anything.
130
:Right.
131
:We got it all under control.
132
:You.
133
:I'm sure you do.
134
:I've signed all the contracts.
135
:Dunno what they said,
but I signed 'em all.
136
:Great, great.
137
:I'm doing all sorts of
things where you're gone man.
138
:That's awesome.
139
:That's good.
140
:That is good.
141
:Hey, let's get into our
Bible reading for today.
142
:We are continuing with Noah's story in
chapter nine and 10 is his genealogy.
143
:And then 11 we get into some
different territory for the.
144
:Progression of world history, which
is always really cool to read in
145
:Genesis because we're watching the
birth and unfolding of history.
146
:It's not like there's other things
that have happened in the past, eons
147
:before this or that are unfolding
even at the same time as all of this.
148
:Really, this is the zoom in,
especially right now after the
149
:flood, this is what's happening.
150
:This is it.
151
:This is the whole kitten
caboodle right here with Noah.
152
:And so, God is going to make
a promise to Noah and tell
153
:Noah, Hey, you know what, Noah?
154
:I am going to make a covenant with you.
155
:In fact, he's gonna use
that word in verse nine.
156
:I'm gonna establish my covenant with
you and your offspring after you.
157
:And he's gonna promise that never
again will the flesh of the earth be
158
:cut off by the waters of the flood,
and never again should there be a
159
:flood to destroy the whole earth.
160
:And then he talks about
hanging his bow in the clouds.
161
:This is the rainbow.
162
:And this is the reminder, it says that
he will remember now, God doesn't forget
163
:anything, but it's more for us to be
reminded of the fact that God is going
164
:to be faithful to this promise that he's
never gonna flood the whole earth again.
165
:And maybe in argument
of a universal flood.
166
:I think there's evidence here
that, that might suggest as well,
167
:because there are still floods.
168
:In fact, in Texas this last year we
saw a tragic flood down in south Texas.
169
:Yeah, we did.
170
:That took the lives of
young children even.
171
:Yeah.
172
:So this is not a promise
never to flood anything.
173
:But this, I think is the promise
more than keeping it never to
174
:flood the whole earth at one time.
175
:Yeah.
176
:In fact as I pondered Pangea and
yesterday's episode, I was thinking, oh.
177
:This fits universal flood universal sign.
178
:Hence, it seems to me like this is a,
as an application to all sorts of people
179
:and I guess I'm sure there's at least one
person I can think of who's saying why.
180
:Why is this even a question?
181
:It says the flood all
the earth there are good.
182
:Exegetical reasons to, to say
maybe it's something different.
183
:So we're not trying to
question God's word at all.
184
:We love God's word.
185
:We esteem God's word.
186
:And so we take it at face value,
but we also take it seriously
187
:and we consider the word.
188
:So I agree that's another sign to
me that this is a universal sign
189
:that has universal application.
190
:Globally speaking, there's nowhere
where you don't see a rainbow.
191
:You can see it all over the
place, all over creation.
192
:So I would say that's another
mark in favor of the universal
193
:universality, the flood.
194
:Right, right.
195
:I guess before this, in verse six, we're
given a statement here by the Lord.
196
:He says, whoever sheds the blood of
man by man shall his blood be shed
197
:for God made man his own image.
198
:One thing that's probably
worth noting is the Bible is
199
:in favor of capital punishment.
200
:I know that's something that is looked
down upon in our society and culture,
201
:and we need to be careful with that.
202
:And we need to ensure that justice
is gonna be done and that justice has
203
:been weighed out appropriately there.
204
:That's right.
205
:But but God is not, he does not
shy away from a life, for a life.
206
:And we see that here in
verse six, because why?
207
:Because God made man in his own image.
208
:So that's something that is, is gonna be
instituted now as part of the law moving
209
:forward is as the law has continually
developed for mankind, as God continues
210
:to reveal himself to them more and more.
211
:Yeah.
212
:And that's one reason we are
very firmly pro sanctity of life.
213
:Yes, we believe life should be protected
and honored from the earliest stages
214
:all the way to the latest stages.
215
:But that would also include things
like medical assistance and dying
216
:made as it's often referred to.
217
:But we don't think that
that's a good call.
218
:We know that there's times
when the body is dying and we
219
:choose to let the body die.
220
:That's different than saying,
I'm gonna help you die, right?
221
:We're not for that, and
because God's not for that.
222
:In fact, you might have
noticed in verse five he says.
223
:I will co require your lifeblood, a
reckoning from every beast and from man.
224
:So it's not just a man.
225
:If an animal were to kill a human
being on accident, you would even
226
:say that animal doesn't have a moral
compass in the same way that we do.
227
:Right?
228
:And yet God still holds that
animal accountable, right?
229
:And so it's very fitting to take the man's
life who took a, took another man's life.
230
:It's also fitting to take an animal's
life that took another man's life.
231
:But not to take a man who
takes an animal's life, not to
232
:take a man who takes, right.
233
:Because the animal is
different than a man.
234
:The animal is different than a man.
235
:And that's, yeah.
236
:It doesn't go the other way.
237
:You're a hundred percent right on that.
238
:What a good observation, because
there are lots of people that
239
:really, really value the ethical
treatment of animals and their rights.
240
:There are people who.
241
:Stand for that.
242
:There are lots of people who are all
for the ethical treatment of animals and
243
:hey, praise God for the humane treat.
244
:Okay.
245
:Let me throw a dilemma at you.
246
:This is a slight digression,
but I need you to answer it.
247
:Okay.
248
:Okay.
249
:Maybe people in certain neighborhoods
are saying, don't use rat poison
250
:because, A, it's inhumane and B.
251
:It can kill the house pets.
252
:'cause if a cat catches the rat that's
eating the poison, the cat eats the rat.
253
:The cat's now poisoned.
254
:Both die, not just the rat.
255
:The second argument is, and also don't,
instead of using poison use these humane
256
:rat traps where you catch them and
then you release them into the wild.
257
:Okay.
258
:Another thing in addition to that
is please don't use glute traps.
259
:'cause those are inhumane.
260
:They're not helpful 'cause the animal
suffers and, it's a terrible way to die.
261
:So I take issue with the word humane.
262
:Can you.
263
:Talk to something like that.
264
:Let's apply Genesis nine.
265
:It doesn't go both ways.
266
:Talk to poisoning animals and dispatching
of animals when they're merely pests.
267
:It's not like it's posing an ethical
issue for us or a health issue.
268
:Right, right.
269
:Talk to those things.
270
:Right.
271
:For the, the person that argues that,
my guess is if you have a cockroach
272
:run across your kitchen floor,
you're gonna step on the cockroach.
273
:You're not gonna create a
humane trap for your cockroach.
274
:Well, they're not as cute though.
275
:Let's just be honest.
276
:Out into the wild.
277
:No one thinks a cockroach cute.
278
:But that's the thing.
279
:That's the point.
280
:It's a subjective argument.
281
:Right.
282
:It's not objective.
283
:It's totally subjective to say, well, we
think that this has more value than this.
284
:And I think God's parameters
is we're to exercise dominion.
285
:Now, the writer of Proverbs says
that a man needs to treat his
286
:beast with care and concern that he
shouldn't be brutal unnecessarily
287
:towards the life of his beast.
288
:That that's something that is
disdained in the eyes of God, but the
289
:dispatch of that, which is a pest, I
think just like swatting a mosquito,
290
:we're just at a different level when
we're dealing with a pest that is
291
:potentially harmful because rats
are filthy, they're dirty animals.
292
:They carry disease carriers.
293
:Yeah.
294
:They can hurt your family.
295
:And so I think it's wise
to, in stewardship of your
296
:family to get rid of them.
297
:Now, the poison the cats eat the rats.
298
:The rats have poison.
299
:The cats are poisoned.
300
:We're so far removed as far
as the potential hazard there.
301
:And I did see a Facebook post recently
that pointed to that happening.
302
:Yeah.
303
:This is the first time
I had ever seen that.
304
:And I assume it's happened before,
but this is the first time I had
305
:ever seen anything like that.
306
:I think you, you need to make a
conscious driven decision at that point.
307
:As for yourself I'm not gonna
make a law where there is no law.
308
:We have rat poison in our backyard.
309
:Yeah it's there, it's effective because
I've picked up dead mice from our
310
:backyard and thrown it in the trash can.
311
:My dog is smart enough or
dumb enough not to eat 'em.
312
:I don't know.
313
:But he avoids it.
314
:Okay.
315
:Do you take issue with anyone
using the terminology, the
316
:humane treatment of animals?
317
:Yeah.
318
:They're not worthy of humane treatment.
319
:We can be kind towards them, but
we need, and should we be, yes,
320
:we should be kind towards animals
to an extent when they become a
321
:nuisance or a threat to human life.
322
:Part of our call to exercise, dominion
is a call to rid ourselves of them.
323
:In fact, it's interesting 'cause right
after the flood too, we didn't comment
324
:on this, but God instills fear within
the lives of animals when Yeah, it
325
:comes to their relationship to mankind.
326
:He also lets us eat them.
327
:He also lets us eat them and he
doesn't qualify it at this point.
328
:Nope.
329
:There, there's just, Hey, carte blanche,
whatever you want to eat, enjoy it.
330
:Just go for it.
331
:Yeah.
332
:Okay.
333
:So that's helpful for
you to speak into that.
334
:That shows us that we value humans
differently than we value animals.
335
:Yes.
336
:And often we make judgements on which
value, which animals deserve more
337
:treatment, better treatment than
others, be because of emotional issues.
338
:Yeah, there's sentimentality
there and you're right.
339
:And a rat in theory or a mouse can
be cute where a cockroach is not.
340
:And so it's important to see those things.
341
:It doesn't mean that it's wrong per se.
342
:But it does mean that we're aware
of some of our biases and that
343
:we can account for those things.
344
:Now, if you wanna show love to your
neighbor and not use poison because
345
:your neighbor has lots of cats and okay.
346
:That's their animal and you know their
animal's gonna eat your rats, perhaps.
347
:Okay, maybe you don't wanna use
poison, but I do think you're right
348
:in offering the that helpful guidance.
349
:Make a decision that your conscience
can live with by faith and love for
350
:the Lord and love for people, and
whatever you choose to do, accept the
351
:consequences, whatever those happen to be.
352
:Yeah.
353
:In the rest of chapter nine,
there's an unsavory event that
354
:happens with Noah and his, we have
questions, his sons what happened?
355
:Tell us what happened exactly.
356
:It's euphemistic and we don't know.
357
:And I think it's intentionally
euphemistic and tell, no.
358
:Okay.
359
:I think there's enough that went
on other than just seeing Noah.
360
:That's all I can say with confidence
is I think that the consequences
361
:are enough that Noah was degraded
by his son in some way that led
362
:to quite the curse on his life.
363
:And this is a situation where you see
now that sham is gonna be the line,
364
:sham is gonna be the promise line.
365
:He's gonna be the one that him
and Jpe are going to treat their
366
:father with honor here and dignity.
367
:Even though Noah had not treated himself
with honor and dignity, but neither
368
:did his son him and him is gonna end
up being cursed as a result of this.
369
:So, I don't know exactly what happens
other than it's something that's bad.
370
:It's awful.
371
:And it's more than just a sideways glance.
372
:And I think we can.
373
:Progress.
374
:I'm gonna go with he humiliated him.
375
:Mocking, poking, something like that.
376
:Yeah.
377
:To read more into it, which
I know people have suggested.
378
:Yeah.
379
:Did he interact with noah's wife at that
point, was there, something like that?
380
:'cause to uncover nakedness
can mean a lot of things.
381
:I don't wanna read more than what's there.
382
:I don't wanna read less either.
383
:But I think I'm just gonna go
with the mockery humiliation.
384
:It doesn't matter actually
what the extent of it was.
385
:'cause scripture doesn't tell us, right?
386
:It does not, it's not clear and
specific and therefore we shouldn't
387
:try to twist the arm of scripture.
388
:Say, tell me what's there.
389
:Right?
390
:We should be good Bereans
and study what's there, but.
391
:There are some things that God
has chosen us to reveal to us, and
392
:that might be one of those things
right from here in chapter 10.
393
:Then we get the lineage of
Noah, and it's gonna go through
394
:this line of Shem, him and j.
395
:Now Shem is gonna be the son of the
promise, so he's the one that the, again,
396
:the promise made the eve back that we
talked about a few days ago that the.
397
:Offspring of Eve would crush
the head of the serpent.
398
:That one's gonna come from Shem
eventually, but we see some notable
399
:people here as we come down here.
400
:The sons of Ham.
401
:You've got Kush, you've got
Egypt, you've got Put, and Canaan.
402
:You can hear some of the names
of peoples that would emerge
403
:from these these numbers there.
404
:Down in verse 10.
405
:You've got Babel.
406
:Babel's gonna play a role in the very
next chapter that we're gonna get to.
407
:You've got a reference to the Philistine.
408
:So you see right off the bat there that
the Sons of Ham, this cursed child of
409
:Noah, are going to end up being a thorn
in the side of Israel for a long time.
410
:In fact, the Canaanites
are going to come from Ham.
411
:The Canaanites are gonna be the
ones that they're gonna have to
412
:drive out of the promised land.
413
:You're also gonna have Sodom and Gomorrah.
414
:Our first mention of Sodom and Gomorrah
shows up here in Genesis 10 19.
415
:They are.
416
:Gonna be the descendants from ham as well.
417
:And then in the rest of it you
get Shem beginning in verse 21.
418
:And Shem is going to
produce his own offspring.
419
:We're gonna get more into she's
lineage in chapter 11, though.
420
:But but this takes us up to the
days the earth was divided as it
421
:references there in verse 26 of
chapter 10, which is explained to us
422
:in chapter 11 with the Tower Babel.
423
:Tower Babel in chapter 11 is one of
those stories that's always fascinating
424
:because it's what were they doing?
425
:What was the problem here?
426
:And I think that the main problem
is found there in verse four.
427
:It's not just that they were like
most boys that are thinking to
428
:themselves, let's build a tower
and get it as tall as we can.
429
:But rather they wanted to make a
name for themselves lest they be
430
:dispersed over the face of the earth.
431
:The creation mandate of God was
be fruitful and multiply and fill
432
:the face of the Earth, which was.
433
:In obedience to God,
making his name great.
434
:They were to populate the whole earth
and represent him part of the Imago Day.
435
:The image of God was that they would
image God and represent him globally
436
:across the whole face of the earth.
437
:This is a perversion of that
because they're gathering together.
438
:They're not dispersing and
they're trying to make a name,
439
:not for God, but for themselves.
440
:And so God in response is gonna
come down and confuse the language.
441
:He's gonna divide them
whether they like it or not.
442
:And the way that he's gonna do that
is gonna take what at the time was one
443
:language and turn it into many languages.
444
:And so they were gonna have to
gather together based on common
445
:tongue, which meant what a talk about
questions like how did this work?
446
:Because did they.
447
:Did God make it to where they all
knew the language together right
448
:away and what they were saying?
449
:Or did they have to learn this
thing and kind of fumble through
450
:it as they're finding themselves?
451
:And who spoke this tongue,
who spoke that tongue, right?
452
:There's a lot that's not explained
here but God is about his glory
453
:and obedience to him here.
454
:Yeah.
455
:And what's most exciting about chapter
11 is that you have the reversal
456
:of the Tower of Babel and, I don't
know, two,:
457
:years later in Acts chapter two.
458
:Where you have the tongues setting
on the heads of people, and now
459
:God is giving them the key, as it
were to speak God's truth in this.
460
:So you have the, you have God
initially sending people over the
461
:face of the earth and saying, I'm
gonna divide you with tongues.
462
:And then later on he's gonna
send divided tongues to
463
:proclaim his glory in His honor.
464
:So you can see some of the way
that scripture weaves itself into.
465
:Itself by giving you clues in context
clue's like this that help you see,
466
:oh, I see what's happening here.
467
:Sin resulted in confusion and division.
468
:God's righteousness unites that and brings
together what was previously fractured.
469
:How beautiful is that?
470
:It is.
471
:The rest here of chapter 11,
zooms in on sham and sham
472
:again is the line of promise.
473
:This lineage here is gonna take us down
all the way to verse 26, where it says,
474
:Tara had lived 70 years and he fathered.
475
:Abram Hor and Harran.
476
:Now Abram is later he comes church.
477
:Abraham.
478
:Yes.
479
:Abram Kim right here.
480
:He's really old, but he
wears it really well.
481
:He looks really good for his day.
482
:He does.
483
:He does.
484
:He does.
485
:And so Abram is gonna be the one that the
scene is now gonna zoom in on starting in
486
:chapter 12, but we also have a lot here.
487
:Mentioned in verse 27, lot is gonna play
a role and Saray is gonna be Abram's wife.
488
:She has mentioned there in verse
30, and notably it says that
489
:she was barren and had no child.
490
:That sets the stage for the
conflict that's gonna take place
491
:later on in Abraham's life.
492
:So chapters one through 11.
493
:Is considered a unit in the book
of Genesis one through 11, really
494
:through verse 26 is Primeval history.
495
:This is the creation of all things,
how God dealt with humanity prior
496
:to this from chapter 1127, all the
way through the end of the book,
497
:chapter 50 verse, whatever that is.
498
:You have patriarchal history, so
if you can remember that two Ps
499
:one through 11, primeval history 12
through 50 or about 12 through 50.
500
:Patriarchal history, and
we'll pick that up tomorrow.
501
:That's good.
502
:New Testament reading.
503
:Now we get into Matthew chapter four.
504
:Matthew chapter four.
505
:Oh, this is a good one.
506
:So chapter three you had Jesus
baptized and it said the spirit of
507
:God descended upon him like a dove.
508
:Now that's more than just a, a.
509
:Argument for the existence of the
Trinity because you've got the father
510
:speaking, the spirits descending
and the son there in the water.
511
:It's also the spirit of God was descending
on Jesus for a reason, and that was to
512
:anoint him for his ministry, to equip
him, empower him for his ministry.
513
:Remember Jesus here has veiled
the fullness of his glory in
514
:the fullness of his humanity.
515
:His true deity is still present
within him, but he's chosen Allah.
516
:The Kenosis passage of Philippians
chapter two, to empty himself by
517
:taking on the form of a servant
and being found in the likeness of.
518
:Of men here, the spirit is going to equip
him and empower him in his humanity.
519
:That is to be able to do the work
that the Lord has for him, including
520
:what happens in chapter four,
which is the wilderness temptation.
521
:So the spirit, that's why it says, leads
Jesus into the wilderness where he's
522
:gonna face the temptation of the enemy.
523
:Now, this is one of the things that I
talked about last Sunday that time in
524
:God's word does for us, is it equips
us to experience victory over sin by
525
:helping us to battle sin and fight sin.
526
:This is the sword of the spirit
being wielded by the word.
527
:Of God by Jesus himself.
528
:And we see just a masterful interaction
between Jesus and the devil who comes
529
:to tempt him as Jesus combats the
temptations that the devil throws at him
530
:by using God's word to establish what's
true in the face of the devil's lies.
531
:What a cool display of Jesus' wisdom
and the power that he operates in.
532
:This is something you and I can do.
533
:We often look at Jesus and say,
well, I can't walk on water
534
:and I don't know the future.
535
:I, yeah, and that's fair.
536
:Jesus is God in the flesh,
but notice he is in the flesh.
537
:This is something we can do.
538
:And in fact, I have a sneaking
suspicion, at least a part of sneaking
539
:suspicion that maybe Jesus was.
540
:In his daily Bible reading.
541
:Maybe he was in Deuteronomy, because
two of these passages come from
542
:Deuteronomy, one's from chapter
six, one's from chapter eight.
543
:He does quote Psalm 91 and Isaiah chapter
nine, so he's a little bit all over, but
544
:I wonder maybe he memorized those and
he has just read Deuteronomy six scroll.
545
:Yeah.
546
:Eight scroll.
547
:I don't know.
548
:All I know is that Jesus
is a man of the word.
549
:He's the word incarnate, but
he's a man who knew this.
550
:He had to learn this.
551
:In his flesh.
552
:He had to learn these things.
553
:Yeah.
554
:How does it work?
555
:I don't know.
556
:I just know that he did.
557
:So if Jesus spent time doing this,
man, this is a worthy investment of
558
:our time to spend time in the word, at
minimum, to engage with it, but also.
559
:If you've got time and you have the will,
what a good thing to do then to memorize
560
:the word and employ it like Jesus did.
561
:And you mentioned yesterday that there's
the announcement from the father.
562
:This is my beloved son,
with whom I'm well pleased.
563
:And just like Satan in the garden,
like we talked about a few days ago.
564
:Yeah.
565
:Satan's gonna go after Jesus's
confidence in the father's love for him.
566
:Yeah.
567
:Does God really say, yeah.
568
:Did God say this?
569
:Don't, doesn't God care about you?
570
:If you throw yourself off, he's
gonna take care of you, won't he?
571
:Mm.
572
:Jesus is gonna see through
the lies of the enemy.
573
:In other words, no, Satan's not stupid.
574
:He is in the pejorative sense of the
term, but he's not stupid intellectually.
575
:Like he's cunning, he's smart.
576
:He's crafty.
577
:Yeah.
578
:And he even tries to use God's
word in ways to get us to
579
:fall prey to his temptations.
580
:And we need to be careful.
581
:We need to know our word well enough,
like obviously Jesus did to be able
582
:to combat these things as well.
583
:Yeah.
584
:You know that's a great point.
585
:Because that tells us that we
should not expect every person who
586
:brings the Bible in their mouth
that they're telling the truth.
587
:Right?
588
:You have to have, you have to have the
knowhow and the skill to, to know your
589
:word well enough to combat the truth,
or to combat the error with the truth.
590
:So another example that Jesus
gives us is not only to know the
591
:word, but to know how to wield it.
592
:That is, that's different than just
knowing, okay, where's John three 16?
593
:How do I find that in my Bible?
594
:That's good.
595
:And I'm not gonna poo poo that at all.
596
:But you should also know how to wield
the word of God just like Jesus did,
597
:and that's gonna take a lifetime.
598
:Of mastery, and I'm sure Jesus
was doing this from Sabbath school
599
:years when he was just a little boy.
600
:Mm-hmm.
601
:From his whole upbringing to his
adult life, he was a man of the word.
602
:And it's evident here as he engaged with
the devil, masterfully with the word.
603
:Yep.
604
:As chapter four continues, then
Jesus launches his earthly ministry.
605
:He's gonna have make his
home base there in Capernaum.
606
:So this is north in Israel.
607
:This is up by the Sea of Galilee.
608
:And so this is gonna be
where he's going to reside.
609
:This is also Peter's hometown.
610
:We know that Peter and his wife
and his mother-in-law live here.
611
:We're gonna find that out later in
the gospels, but this is where Jesus
612
:is gonna make his home base, at least
up in the Galilean region for the
613
:early part of his earthly ministry.
614
:He finds out that John the Baptist has
been arrested, and it says in verse 17.
615
:From that time on, Jesus began to preach.
616
:And his message is the same as John's was.
617
:Repent for the kingdom
of heaven is at hand.
618
:So Jesus here takes up John's
message and continues to go and
619
:reach people by calling them to
repentance for the kingdom is at hand.
620
:After this, he's going to
call his first disciples.
621
:Now it's important that you
note this is not their first
622
:time interacting with Jesus.
623
:We can go to John's
gospel and see that John.
624
:Recording.
625
:There is more of the initial interaction
between Jesus and these disciples.
626
:This is Jesus officially beckoning them
to come and follow him as their rabbi.
627
:This is the formal call
of these disciples.
628
:That's why they leave everything
that they're doing to go follow him.
629
:This is not as though this is a stranger
saying, come follow me, and they're
630
:going, okay, yeah, we're all in.
631
:No, these had already spent time with
Jesus and heard him and been around him.
632
:This is.
633
:Him commissioning them, saying,
come and be my followers.
634
:Come and follow me.
635
:Learn from me in a formal sense.
636
:And that's what's going on here with
the calling of the disciples here in
637
:this middle section of chapter four.
638
:And not to contradict you at all,
but I don't wanna take away from the
639
:fact that they did leave everything.
640
:Yeah, they did.
641
:They did.
642
:They dropped and they knew who Jesus was.
643
:And I think that's an
important caveat here.
644
:Yeah.
645
:Is that he wasn't a
stranger to your point.
646
:Mm-hmm.
647
:He had displayed to them.
648
:That he had the credentials to
be someone who could teach them.
649
:He was worthy of leaving
everything for Yeah.
650
:Now I, I don't know that this
was a permanent situation because
651
:Peter still had a wife and kids.
652
:They still had their fishing
business, they picked back up.
653
:So I'm not sure what it all included,
but it is a healthy picture for us of
654
:what discipleship typically looks like.
655
:You give up all to follow Jesus.
656
:Yeah.
657
:And that call that he gave
them still applies to us today.
658
:Yeah.
659
:The chapter ends, and it's an
interesting statement here.
660
:It says, he went throughout all
Galilee teaching in their synagogues
661
:and proclaiming the gospel of
the kingdom and healing every
662
:disease and every affliction.
663
:We may wonder what is the gospel
of the kingdom and what does it
664
:mean when he was saying Repent for
the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
665
:I think we're about to
get a glimpse of that.
666
:Tomorrow when we start into the Sermon
on the Mount to understand some of
667
:what the gospel of the kingdom looked
like for Jesus as he was preaching
668
:and teaching through these regions.
669
:So make sure you tune in again
tomorrow as we tackle chapter five
670
:of Matthew, at least half of it, as
well as our Old Testament reading.
671
:Hmm.
672
:Let's pray.
673
:Lord, thanks for the example
that we have in Jesus.
674
:I pray that you would make us.
675
:It comes Bible church, men and women who
wield the sword of the spirit effectively.
676
:That we would know our Bible so
well, that we were able to combat the
677
:lies, the temptations of the enemy.
678
:And so God help us to be men and women
who are godly and who are ready to take on
679
:whatever comes our way each and every day.
680
:And we know that spending
time in your word each.
681
:Each and every day is such
an important part of that.
682
:So may we stay committed.
683
:We pray this in Jesus' name.
684
:Amen.
685
:Well, hey guys, you are
doing such a great job.
686
:Keep going.
687
:You're doing an awesome work
in laying this foundation.
688
:It's going to pay dividends, I promise.
689
:Remember, the gains come in the end
as we look back, but this is part of
690
:the process of building those gains.
691
:So keep going, tuning against
tomorrow as we keep this process
692
:of reading God's word together.
693
:Y I'll come back now.
694
:Bye.
