Martin:
Welcome to Presentation Skills Q and A. I am Martin Lindeschool.
Martin:
Hi, Karina.
Carina:
Hi, Martin.
Carina:
How are you today?
Martin:
I'm fine.
Martin:
And yourself?
Carina:
I'm fine.
Carina:
I have a song in my head, and I got it as an
Carina:
inspiration for this episode.
Carina:
And it's Help by Beatles.
Martin:
Help. Sometimes you need help like tools or material for helping when you're
Martin:
doing a presentation or prep something to hold in your hands or to remember things.
Martin:
So right now I'm having here on my desk so called word cards from a stationary company
Martin:
called Commodore.
Martin:
I ordered some, you could say index cards.
Martin:
And then I told about our podcast and Robin, he sent these cue cards or flash cards or word
Martin:
cards from a Japanese stationary company, like small cards that you could hold in your hand,
Martin:
like reminder or what should I say next? Or when you're studying or whatnot.
Martin:
And I know you have lots of pieces of advice here and tips, and you have used it in your
Martin:
work.
Martin:
Today's topic.
Carina:
Yeah. Support material.
Carina:
It really helps you in many ways.
Carina:
And now you and I were talking about cards, not fluttering paper, should I say?
Carina:
These stiff cards, which you can have control over.
Carina:
You can hold them in your hand and you can feel them in your hand.
Martin:
And is it like cards that you have, like on the television, television show?
Martin:
Often they are bigger, but you know, news reporters or TV anchors, you see them holding
Martin:
cards, what will they say next? And then they flip the cards.
Carina:
Yeah. And they have to have these big cards because they also have a prompter in
Carina:
front yeah.
Carina:
Teleprompter a camera who is filming the cards
Carina:
above them.
Carina:
So they have the same thing in a prompter in
Carina:
front of them.
Carina:
But these cards you are talking about,
Carina:
schools, for example, have used these flashcards for many years in education.
Carina:
For study language, for example, you have the word on one side and the meaning of the world
Carina:
on the other side.
Martin:
Okay.
Carina:
And you can also study history.
Carina:
You have something in history and then you
Carina:
have the year on the yeah.
Martin:
Balancer. Yeah. Like math and so on, like 77 to six.
Martin:
You could set a booster gravel.
Martin:
70, 76.
Carina:
Yes.
Martin:
When was that and what happened then?
Carina:
Yeah, but I think when you use these cue cards or flashcards, it's, it helps you to
Carina:
remember what you are going to say.
Carina:
But you can also have letters on them that
Carina:
helps you how you move on the stage.
Martin:
Okay. Left, right?
Carina:
Yes. Left, right.
Carina:
You can connect them both, what you are
Carina:
talking about and your body language and make that very easy.
Carina:
So in the right corner, you can write L for left, for example, or R for right or M for
Carina:
middle.
Carina:
Then the people you are talking to, they don't
Carina:
know anything, but you are calm in the situation when you're moving back and forth
Carina:
over the stage and it looks very natural.
Carina:
Yes, but you also have experience.
Carina:
You use these cards in which situations?
Martin:
Martin right, this one now I get lots of ideas how I could use them.
Martin:
And they are in mini format, so it's easy to hold in the hand and bring with you.
Martin:
So I will use it like presentations.
Martin:
But also it could be for podcasting, it could
Martin:
be like when you have some notes or bullet points and also doodling or writing like
Martin:
inspiration.
Martin:
Because these cards you could take out and put
Martin:
in certain order.
Martin:
You could do all kinds of things.
Martin:
So I got lots of ideas now, but otherwise I have used index cards holding in my hand for
Martin:
the slides, for a presentation that next slide.
Martin:
And then I have short bullet points and some note to self to remember things.
Carina:
Do you have any recommendation which type of cards you were talking about,
Carina:
Commodore.
Martin:
For a little bit, yeah, I think these are called word cards, the small ones on
Martin:
almost like a key chain, but it's like rubber or something like that.
Martin:
So I recommend that and then the traditional index cards that you could get at the
Martin:
stationary store.
Martin:
Also, I remember when I prepared for my
Martin:
presentation on podcasting and I went to you and got help with that and training, and then
Martin:
you gave a tip.
Martin:
You could also have your card with your logo
Martin:
type or your branding or something like that and how you could create your own cards.
Carina:
Fan that looks really professional but I think like this we are giving these links in
Carina:
the show notes where our listeners can look up these things and get these I really say
Carina:
fantastic cards.
Carina:
That helps you in many ways.
Martin:
Yeah, we will do that.
Martin:
So thanks again, Robin, at Commodore for
Martin:
sending me with my order.
Martin:
And again, the call to action is download a
Martin:
new podcast app.
Martin:
So you could send like a digital note to us
Martin:
with a feedback loop.
Carina:
Yes. And our audience listeners can always find us in social media and get in
