Hey my friend, have you ever wondered what actually is the armor of light in Ephesians 6?

And how does a busy Christian mom put it on today?

Because maybe you wake up feeling already weighed down by exhaustion, irritable with your kids or your husband, and wondering why keeping peace in your home feels like an uphill battle.

This battle can feel never ending.

But stay tuned because by the end of today's episode, you will know armor is something you can receive rather than manufacture.

How to boss your brain with the helmet of salvation and how our Savior Jesus Christ equips you with every piece of divine armor to guard your home and family.

Hello and welcome back to the Arise Women of God podcast.

I'm your host, Tamara K. Anderson, and joining me today is the wonderful Amy Johnson.

Amy is a wife, a mom, grandma, and a leader of women, as well as being a powerful teacher of the scriptures who brings incredible honesty and practical wisdom to spiritual warfare.

Here's what we're going to be talking about today in today's episode.

First, the armor of light and God is the great benefactor.

Second, Amy will share practical tips on how to boss your brain with the helmet of salvation.

Third, we will dive into a modern mother's field guide to the armor how Christian moms can practically put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, use the shields of faith and the sword of the Spirit.

Finally, we'll talk about the armor's engine and Ephesians 6:18 will talk about activating your defense through constant prayer in the spirit.

But let's begin with understanding what the armor of light truly is.

Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light.

Notice that light does not weigh you down like heavy medieval iron armor.

This armor of light is radiant and protective like the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ, wrapping around your soul.

And darkness cannot penetrate pure light.

Too many of us treat the armor as an impossible to do list, like Did I pray enough?

Did I read enough?

Did I perform well enough to earn my armor today?

But let's listen to Amy Johnson explain why Paul's command to take unto you the armor is actually an invitation to receive from our divine benefactor.

In Ephesians chapter 6.

Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, not against my husband, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Wherefore take unto you.

And I'm a wordy, so these phrases mean stuff to me.

So take unto you literally, for me means receive, because God gives and gives and gives and gives.

He's a very abundant God.

He's a benefactor.

Right?

But we don't always receive.

We're kind of bad at it.

Kind of like we are with compliments.

Oh, am, you look so beautiful today.

Oh, thanks.

I just feel so.

That's not really receiving a compliment.

Right?

We're kind of like that with God.

Oh, I see that.

You gave it to me, but let me just put it on a shelf because we're mortal.

Okay.

So wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day.

And having done all to stand.

I love that perspective.

God is constantly handing us his protection, and our job is to open our hands and receive it.

Now, once we receive the armor, where does the enemy usually strike first?

Honestly, ladies, it's our minds.

In Ephesians 6:17, Paul commands and take the helmet of salvation.

Let's listen to Amy share how the helmet of salvation serves as her personal stronghold against mental chatter and vain imaginations.

And he talks about the helmet of salvation.

That's a really powerful weapon for me because I have to protect my brain and I have to boss my brain.

And if you know me superficially, you don't really know that about me because I'm capable.

So verse 17, and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.

So my stronghold is immediately to go to a scripture that I love, a quote that I love that reminds me that Satan uses vain imaginations to destroy my peace.

And so I posted that same quote, same scripture that will remind me to go to my happy place.

Don't automatically assume that they're out to get me.

And by the way, it's really bad with my husband.

It's the chink with my husband specifically, or my kids.

And so I just know that you have to find your own helmet of salvation, whatever it is, for most people I find it's the things that replay over and over and over in our head.

So for me, I change the scenery every time I think he doesn't love me and I'm at all serious, I think vain imaginations destroy your peace.

Amy's phrase, boss.

Your brain is exactly what the helmet of salvation does when false stories and your mind, you remember your identity.

I belong to Jesus Christ.

My soul is secure, and I refuse to entertain lies.

Now let's walk through how a modern Christian mother can put on every other piece of this armor of light in her everyday life.

First, loins girt with the belt of truth.

In ancient Roman armor, the leather belt pulled the soldier's loose tunic so he wouldn't trip while running.

For a mother, truth cinches your runaway emotions.

When feelings of inadequacy, exhaustion, or mom guilt scream that you are failing the belt, God's word and truth can hold your emotions together.

And you can remind yourself, I am chosen, I am equipped, and God's grace is sufficient for me.

The breastplate of righteousness guards the vital organs, especially our hearts.

Ladies, in motherhood, the enemy loves to shoot darts of accusation directly at your heart.

You lost your temper.

You're a terrible mother.

The breastplate of righteousness is not your own flawless performance.

It is Christ's righteousness covering you.

When we repent, his blood guards our heart against the adversary's toxic shame.

Next is feet shod with the shoes of the preparation of the Gospel of peace.

In verse 15, Roman soldiers wore hobnailed sandals for traction so that they wouldn't slip in battle.

As mothers, we walk into daily chaos almost every day.

Spilled drinks, sibling bickering, busy schedules.

And these shoes can give you spiritual traction so you don't slip into anger.

You step into your kitchen, bringing Christ peace rather than matching the frantic anxiety of the room.

I love the shield of faith mentioned Next.

In verse 16, Paul says the shield quenches all the fiery darts.

As a wicked, as a mom, fiery darts look like catastrophic what if scenarios.

What if my child leaves the faith?

What if this diagnosis ruins our future?

Faith is lifting up God's promises as a defensive wall, declaring, my God is faithful.

He holds my children and his promises never fail.

If you feel you're not there yet with your faith, pray.

Lord, I believe.

Help thou mine unbelief.

In verse 17, we find the sword of the spirit.

This is the word of God, our only offensive weapon.

When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness, he didn't argue.

He said, it is written and quoted scripture.

Mothers you too can keep the sword drawn.

Speak Scripture aloud in your home.

When fear creeps in, speak second Timothy 1:7 aloud.

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power and of love, and of a sound mind.

When chaos erupts, speak Philippians 4:6:7.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

The adversary cannot stand against the spoken word of God.

Finally, we find the key to fortifying your armor.

Praying always.

In verse 18, Paul concludes by saying, praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit.

Prayer is the operational power that welds every piece of armor together on you.

It is running a continuous conversational prayer line with God while folding laundry, driving carpool or tucking kids into bed.

When you put on the Armor of Light every morning, you stop fighting from a place of defeat and start standing in Christ's victory.
