The weather has cleared, and it is looking spectacular. I still can’t believe how much snow there is in the mountains - it’s October and the hills are still covered in white! And while the resorts are open for only 2 more days, there will be plenty of backcountry skiing and boarding to be had for a while yet. If you’re new to that side of things, be careful though and start out with a tour or with experienced friends. Anyway, back to the resorts and it’s looking to be a wonderful blue-sky day today. There’s a few wisps of clouds hanging around, but otherwise we can just enjoy the sun. It’s been freezing overnight, firming up the snow base a little and it will get up to 7 degrees at Thredbo top station, 9 degrees down in Perisher valley and 8 over at Charlotte Pass. The winds will be light down low, moderate up high, with strong gusts at times.
Many of the lifts are closed for the season by now, but there’s still plenty to choose from in the higher parts of Thredbo, the main area of Perisher, and at last count - all runs at Charlotte Pass are still open! So if you’re thinking about going out today, you should! I’m going to post a bunch of pics on the dailysnowpod instagram for a little inspiration, so check em out.
Now that i’ve convinced you to head out, I’ll inform you that the roads to Perisher and Thredbo are both open, no need for chains but you still have to carry them with you. The road to Charlotte Pass is still closed, but it should start to open up from tomorrow - probably not all the way to the resort, but hopefully to Spencer’s creek - worth a drive if you have some spare time.
