Do you think of your interior design as self-expression? In the same way art or music can be? Or are you duplicating styles? Decorating for the critics in your head? I’m Dan Hansen and this is a minute at RepcoLite.

Benjamin Moore’s color of the year for 2023 is a bold red-orange. And not everyone’s a fan of the choice. However, in the literature talking about the color, Benjamin Moore talks about the role color plays in self-expression.

That got me thinking: In the recent past, whenever I’d consider painting a room, buying decor,, or even rearranging furniture, I’d typically do all of that with an ear to the voices of the critics in my head. What would mom think about this?  What will people think about these color choices?

I do that all the time and I know I’m not alone. So often we limit what we choose, or we spend our energy duplicating someone else’s style or colors. It’s not all bad. But interior design–of our homes and spaces–should be first and foremost an expression of who we are. Not a regurgitation of someone else. How do you design? We’ll keep going tomorrow. I’m Dan Hansen and that’s a Minute at RepcoLite.
