Speaker:

In 2023, I thought I was

going to just ride the wave.

2

:

You see the fall of 20, 22

was the absolute busiest.

3

:

My business has ever been for

my keynote speaking standpoint.

4

:

I was crisscrossing the

country every few days.

5

:

I was inspiring huge audiences

connecting with the audiences and

6

:

feeling like for lack of a better term.

7

:

I had finally made it as a speaker.

8

:

That wasn't till January, 2023, when

the phones literally didn't ring.

9

:

The entire month.

10

:

And they didn't ring in February, Either.

11

:

Welcome to episode 180 of the shit

works, a podcast dedicated to all

12

:

things, networking, relationship

building and business development.

13

:

I'm your host, Julie Brown.

14

:

Speaker author and networking coach.

15

:

And today I am discussing how sometimes.

16

:

We need to take our own damn advice.

17

:

Get off her asses And make shit.

18

:

Happen.

19

:

2023 was my wake-up call.

20

:

I mean, in the beginning of the year,

I was emotionally exhausted from the

21

:

loss of five family members, one of my

best friends to cancer and my sweet dog,

22

:

Royce, whom I had rescued 12 years before.

23

:

And the entire time

had never left my side.

24

:

I was physically exhausted

from months of travel.

25

:

And to say that my coping mechanisms to

deal with everything that was going on.

26

:

We're less than healthy

would be an understatement.

27

:

In January.

28

:

I sat on my couch in my office

with my other dog, Maddie curled

29

:

beside me and stared at my

computer for what felt like weeks.

30

:

Actually, it probably was weeks.

31

:

I kept waiting for the phone during,

for their speaker requests to pile

32

:

up in my inbox, but the phone stayed

silent and their requests didn't come.

33

:

I actually had no idea

how this was happening.

34

:

I just come off my busiest year.

35

:

I'd spoken to thousands

and thousands of people.

36

:

Where were the people lining up to hire

me to bring my energy and my spunk to

37

:

their companies and their conferences.

38

:

I stayed in this passive

steep until March.

39

:

Waiting.

40

:

Hoping.

41

:

And then getting pissed at

myself when I remembered.

42

:

That the key to building

a thriving business.

43

:

Isn't passive waiting.

44

:

Is proactive engagement.

45

:

It's about crafting a strategy,

getting out there and meeting more

46

:

people and making the shit happen.

47

:

It's the shit I encourage people to do for

their own businesses in careers every day.

48

:

And here I was sitting back expecting

things to be different for me.

49

:

Expecting to not have to work for it.

50

:

So.

51

:

What did I do?

52

:

Well, I got off my ass and developed a

robust strategy that included outreach.

53

:

New marketing, additional networking

and active engagement with

54

:

potential clients and past clients.

55

:

I thought about who I

really wanted to serve.

56

:

And I did the research on

all of those companies.

57

:

I researched the best contacts within

those companies and asked my network to

58

:

make strategic introductions for me.

59

:

I reconnected with network partners

that I hadn't talked to in awhile.

60

:

I connected with and

guested on Newport podcasts.

61

:

I reached and asked high profile

people to be on my podcast.

62

:

I wrote two new keynotes, one on

internal employee networking and

63

:

engagement that debuted at the

CFMA conference in September.

64

:

And one on networking for the college

and university students, which I will

65

:

debut in February at Endicott college.

66

:

Up the fun factor in my marketing,

creating new reels, including the

67

:

networking nine 11 series, which has

exploded on Instagram and driven new

68

:

followers to my website and newsletter.

69

:

All of this.

70

:

All of this has set me up for a 20, 24.

71

:

That will be my best year yet.

72

:

By December 31st of last year, I

had already secured more speaking

73

:

gigs for 20, 24 than I had for all.

74

:

Of 2023.

75

:

And, you know, what.

76

:

I'm having so much fun.

77

:

I'm loving my strategy.

78

:

I'm loving the clients I'm

working with, and I'm having fun.

79

:

With my business again.

80

:

I know I have a fantastic product.

81

:

I know that when I step on a stage,

everyone in that room will not only

82

:

learn new things, but have a fantastic

fucking time learning then as well.

83

:

There's a misconception that a fantastic

product or service alone will draw

84

:

customers in while quality is crucial.

85

:

It's equally essential

to create visibility.

86

:

You've got to showcase what

you offer, tell your story and

87

:

connect with potential clients.

88

:

Waiting for the phone to ring is like

hiding your light under a bushel.

89

:

You can't do that.

90

:

You've got to get out

there and let it shine.

91

:

And as much as I love in-person

networking, getting out there, isn't

92

:

just about physical presence at events.

93

:

It's about your digital footprint.

94

:

In today's world, a significant

chunk of business happens online.

95

:

Utilize social media, especially

LinkedIn build a compelling

96

:

website, create engaging content.

97

:

These are tools to amplify your

presence and your reach, and

98

:

they help you network better.

99

:

Don't wait for clients to miraculously

stumble upon you, go where they are

100

:

and show them why they need you.

101

:

This was a big part of my strategy and

why that strategy was so successful.

102

:

Take it from me.

103

:

Waiting for the phone to ring can

lead to frustration de-motivation and

104

:

more than the occasional swear word.

105

:

And I need a damn drink comment.

106

:

When days go by without inquiries or

sales, it's easy to feel disheartened and

107

:

disenchanted, but when you take the reins.

108

:

When you actively pursue your

goals every step forward, no

109

:

matter how small becomes a victory.

110

:

And those steps add up.

111

:

You're in control and that's empowering.

112

:

Okay.

113

:

Uh, onto the drink of the week,

which here's how we got to this one.

114

:

I first thought there must be a

cocktail called bull by the horns

115

:

because isn't that what I just did.

116

:

I took 20, 24 by the horns.

117

:

And then there is this whole

bull market sort of take that

118

:

could be associated with it.

119

:

And yes, there was a cocktail that

was called bull by the horns and it

120

:

was disgusting and it called for red

bull, which you know, is huge no-no

121

:

for me, obviously, caffeine is huge.

122

:

No-no for me.

123

:

So then I scrolled through a bunch

of other cocktails and found a

124

:

cocktail called the brave bull

cocktail, which I'm like, Hmm.

125

:

Maybe that works even better.

126

:

So.

127

:

Without further ado here

is the brave bull cocktail.

128

:

Very, very, very simple.

129

:

Here's what you're going to need.

130

:

One part Kalua and two

parts, Blanco, tequila.

131

:

Um, you're going to fill a rocks,

rocks, glass with ice, add the clue,

132

:

and then the tequila mix and enjoy.

133

:

And that is it.

134

:

All right.

135

:

Friends.

136

:

Do you know, actually, before

you get on, they actually make

137

:

like a coffee flavored tequila.

138

:

Patroned Meek's one.

139

:

I have a little nip of it, but

I've never tried it anyways.

140

:

I don't even know if I can, because I

don't know if there's caffeine in it, but

141

:

I don't think there's caffeine in clue.

142

:

Okay.

143

:

Tangent.

144

:

All right, friends.

145

:

That's all for this week.
