Evo Terra:

On the whole podcasting, hasn't been kind to video

Evo Terra:

content, producers, and video.

Evo Terra:

Hasn't been kind to podcasters wallets, but for developing trends could change.

Evo Terra:

How podcasters think about video.

Evo Terra:

Today's episode is brought to you by Gumball, the premiere

Evo Terra:

marketplace to easily and efficiently buy host-read podcast ads.

Evo Terra:

Gumball provides a transparent and modern buying platform, connecting great

Evo Terra:

podcasts with the best advertisers.

Evo Terra:

Gumball takes away all the logistical headaches for podcasters and advertisers

Evo Terra:

alike by managing inventory schedules, providing easy and consistent ad

Evo Terra:

script instructions, easy aircheck uploading, and ensuring payments

Evo Terra:

are made in a timely fashion.

Evo Terra:

Best of all, Gumball takes pride in offering the most podcaster friendly

Evo Terra:

terms as a standard, meaning more money flowing directly to the podcaster.

Evo Terra:

As it should be!

Evo Terra:

If your show is pulling down more than 10,000 downloads per episode, you owe

Evo Terra:

it to yourself to talk to Gumball at Gumball.fm to see how they can help you

Evo Terra:

make even more money with your podcast.

Evo Terra:

That's Gumball.fm.

Evo Terra:

And tell 'em Evo sent you!

Evo Terra:

Hello, and welcome to another Podcast Pontifications with me, Evo Terra.

Evo Terra:

In the beginning, there were audio podcasts.

Evo Terra:

And then about thirteen seconds later, there were video podcasts.

Evo Terra:

All right, well, not thirteen seconds, but it didn't take very long for

Evo Terra:

content creators to realize that video files could be sent via RSS

Evo Terra:

feeds just as easily as audio files.

Evo Terra:

And really any other sorts of files.

Evo Terra:

And it wasn't long when that happened, that suddenly audio podcasters and video

Evo Terra:

podcasters were living side by side.

Evo Terra:

The trouble here is that they were two distinctly different paths the

Evo Terra:

audience member had to, and the producers had to make, as well.

Evo Terra:

And in many cases, it was an either/or situation.

Evo Terra:

There really wasn't much point in trying to listen to Happy Tree

Evo Terra:

Friends or Ask A Ninja unless you're also watching the video.

Evo Terra:

A handful of you from 2005 might remember those.

Evo Terra:

Then, of course, YouTube happened not longer after that.

Evo Terra:

And the watching audience was converted to that property as the primary

Evo Terra:

consumption site, which caused most video-only podcasters to follow suit.

Evo Terra:

But now, video podcasts are looking like they might be a thing again...

Evo Terra:

again.

Evo Terra:

And as the title says, it might actually work this time.

Evo Terra:

There are four trends right now that I'm keeping an eye on that I think

Evo Terra:

you should also keep your eye on to see if this is really happening.

Evo Terra:

You may remember just a few weeks ago - a week ago, time is still wonky

Evo Terra:

- YouTube announced they were looking for someone to head up podcasting - YouTube

Evo Terra:

podcasts, not Google Podcasts, not anything else Google-related, but

Evo Terra:

actually a YouTube person to manage the podcasting side of YouTube.

Evo Terra:

And no, that doesn't exist today.

Evo Terra:

Then last week, Spotify announced they'd be hosting audio and

Evo Terra:

video versions of select shows.

Evo Terra:

Just sign up and you could be there.

Evo Terra:

The idea, at least for Spotify, is that once they listen or follow the show, the

Evo Terra:

listener can then decide which format of the episodes is right for them.

Evo Terra:

Thirdly, the Podcast 2.0 people have come up with the alternate enclosure tag.

Evo Terra:

It's part of the new namespace for Podcast 2.0, and that will allow what

Evo Terra:

Spotify is doing, but in a non-proprietary way so that any application that is

Evo Terra:

reading the alternate enclosure tag from the RSS feed could display the video.

Evo Terra:

Now, those three trends, which are like really new right now on their own, those

Evo Terra:

are probably enough to get you thinking about the video version of your show.

Evo Terra:

However, I recognize, because I do it, that it's still extra effort.

Evo Terra:

And we're not talking about a little extra effort.

Evo Terra:

It is a lot of extra effort to make not only an audio version of your podcasts

Evo Terra:

that people want to listen to, but also a video version that people want to watch.

Evo Terra:

I get it.

Evo Terra:

Enter the fourth trend where you become an editor of the media,

Evo Terra:

not the audio or the video.

Evo Terra:

And this is weird.

Evo Terra:

Rather than viewing - heh, viewing - the video as something else to be

Evo Terra:

shot and created, audio and video, video and audio are captured at the

Evo Terra:

same time - cameras and microphones.

Evo Terra:

But then rather than going down two distinctly different paths, creators can

Evo Terra:

use software like Descript - there'll be a link in the episode details - to

Evo Terra:

take that captured media and to edit it, I guess I'll say, holistically so

Evo Terra:

that you're editing the entire piece.

Evo Terra:

Then when you're done editing the entire piece, out the other end will

Evo Terra:

come an audio-only version and a video-enabled version as outputs.

Evo Terra:

Again, not by manipulating the video itself, not by manipulating the

Evo Terra:

audio itself, but by holistically editing the entire thing.

Evo Terra:

In Descript's model, that's all done via text, which is just weird, but it works.

Evo Terra:

So now we're going to have YouTube, Spotify, and any other podcast app

Evo Terra:

directory that's making proper use of the alternate enclosure tag,

Evo Terra:

they can then come up with a clever UX so that they present either

Evo Terra:

option to the audience member.

Evo Terra:

This is going to get interesting in the video space now.

Evo Terra:

No, I'm not ready to predict that most podcasts that are audio-only today

Evo Terra:

will suddenly be audio and video.

Evo Terra:

I'm not saying that's the case.

Evo Terra:

There are still many podcasts, many types of podcasts even, that could

Evo Terra:

not easily be made into both a video and an audio format, many things

Evo Terra:

that just, it just wouldn't work.

Evo Terra:

But for a lot - monologue shows, interview shows...

Evo Terra:

hmm, maybe it can be.

Evo Terra:

Again, I'm not predicting this is the way things are going.

Evo Terra:

However, while you are making your holiday shopping lists, you

Evo Terra:

might want to keep video in mind.

Evo Terra:

Let's do some Boostagrams!

Evo Terra:

Now it's time for the boost-the boost-the boost- Boostagram Corner.

Evo Terra:

Boostagram Corner.

Evo Terra:

I don't know a thing about crypto.

Evo Terra:

First, I want to thank Garrett Godfrey of the podcast Good Patron,

Evo Terra:

he actually brought me actual coffee.

Evo Terra:

Not bought me coffee virtually, but actually physically brought coffee

Evo Terra:

to me - thank you, Garrett - to the Phoenix podcasters meet up last week.

Evo Terra:

Now I have some amazing coffee from Garrett.

Evo Terra:

Thank you very much, sir.

Evo Terra:

I also want to thank John Kostuch - I think that's how I pronounce

Evo Terra:

that - of the Centre Steer podcast.

Evo Terra:

He bought me a virtual coffee and gave me a note saying, "Being a guide and

Evo Terra:

not an expert made a connection with me.

Evo Terra:

Thanks for that."

Evo Terra:

Thank you very much, John.

Evo Terra:

I'm glad that episode resonated.

Evo Terra:

And I will say thateven though I haven't received real, actual Boostagrams from

Evo Terra:

the new podcast apps, my streaming stats keep on taking in, rolling in whatever

Evo Terra:

sound Satoshi's make when they come in.

Evo Terra:

Anyhow, regardless, I think I'm up to like 32,000.

Evo Terra:

Sitoshi thus far earned from people like you who are just listening to

Evo Terra:

an app, but listening to an app that has value for value enabled so that

Evo Terra:

value streams back to the podcast.

Evo Terra:

You are listening to, you can check out those@newpodcastapps.com.

Evo Terra:

That's it.

Evo Terra:

I shall be back tomorrow with yet another Podcast Pontifications.

Evo Terra:

Cheers!
