In this episode, we dive into one of the biggest struggles for adult children from dysfunctional families: setting and sticking to healthy boundaries. If you’ve ever found it challenging to maintain boundaries, you’re not alone. We explore five main reasons behind this difficulty, starting with the fear of rejection or abandonment. Often, those raised in dysfunctional environments feel they must prioritize others to avoid isolation, and that belief lingers into adulthood.
We also discuss how a lack of clarity around personal needs and feelings makes it hard to recognize what boundaries to set, while guilt and a sense of obligation can pressure us into “keeping the peace” at the expense of our well-being. Low self-esteem plays a role as well, with many of us questioning whether our boundaries are valid or feeling unworthy of asserting our needs. Finally, we explore the patterns of people-pleasing and codependency that develop as coping mechanisms, where we feel responsible for others’ happiness, often at the cost of our own.
